Barriers with social and environmental compliance : A qualitative study of compliance in supply chains within the clothing industry

Ioannou, Nicolina January 2021 (has links)
There is an increased public pressure on clothing brands to consider environmental and social issues when sourcing from suppliers in developing countries, and to ensure that their supply chain partners do the same. However, social, and environmental issues within the clothing industry are complex with many actors involved. Avoidance of compliance with social and environmental requirements are not uncommon and contributes to the continuing exploitation of humans and environment in the country of production, thus hindering the possibility of social change. This study investigates the perceived challenges with sustainability initiatives in supply chains within the global clothing industry and takes on a qualitative research approach with an interpretive basis. This study investigates the barriers to achieve social and environmental compliance through a content analysis of four global clothing brands supply chain governance strategies, and by interviews with two NGOs. The empirical findings shows that suppliers face increase compliance requirements with additional costs on their side, but with no financial support from clothing brands. Consequently, the perceived injustice between input costs and gains contribute to that suppliers avoid compliance to balance their additional costs.

The Sámi – Confronted with Climate Injustices : Exposing inconsistencies within global climate mitigation measures

Schneider, Julia January 2023 (has links)
This study examines the cultural practices of the Sámi people and how they are affected by climate (in)justice within the European Union (EU). The establishment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has led many global actors such as the EU to commit and implement sustainable mitigation strategies. This paper explores if the EU in pursuit of sustainable development has neglected human rights issues through its mitigation strategies. This is important to understand in order to safeguard indigenous communities´ rights within the EU in light of the climate crisis and to avoid climate injustices in the form of racism, discrimination, and exclusion. This study makes use of three theoretical frameworks: green colonialism, environmental and climate justice, and textual analysis as a method to analyse gathered material. This paper argues that the Sámi and their cultural practices are neglected within decision-making processes and sustainable mitigation strategies, threatening Sámi livelihood security and their cultural identity. The analysis as part of a larger issue highlights tensions within sustainable development pursuits on a global level.

Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations: Hazards, Environmental and Health Risks as the Latent Products of Late Modernity

Clarey, Bryan R 18 May 2012 (has links)
CAFOs raise tens of thousands of animals in confined cages and feedlots, feed them high calorie diets, and ship them to slaughter in record time. These factory farms (as they are sometimes called) devastate neighboring environments with the releases of toxic methane gas and animal waste. Progress in modernized agricultural production has enabled us to feed the growing population but unintended consequences for human health and neighboring communities are happening. This study examines environmental and human health impacts of CAFOs on Central Mississippi residents. Through analyses of existing studies and data and telephone surveys, the objectives will be met. Risk society theory is used to explain the increase of diseases and environmental risks associated with CAFOs in late modernity. The results do not indicate that neighboring residents of CAFOs in Central Mississippi are more likely to have ill health, a negative quality of life, or environmental degradation, overall.

Over the years, the question has many faces and many speeches. From the moment in which the Governments of the State and the municipality, since the years of 1950, made the popular representations of the slums part of its political representations, the power of discussion, participation and claim this portion of the population was diminished and dispersed. This fact paved the way for handling investments and public policies that have increased social inequality and, consequently, in places such as the neighborhood of Caju, promoted business growth policies, so intense and predatory who created in concomitance to social problems, severe environmental injustice frames. In search for the strengthening of this stage of debate, this research seeks to collaborate with the portrait of a region barely visible in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, and that since its occupation as housing area, has been transformed into environmental scanning utility territory, where inequalities arise and imprison an increasing population in the circuits of social and environmental risk. The result is a fragile reality display, and the deeper discussion about the social and environmental situation in the neighborhood of Caju / Desde o final do período monárquico, e já no nascimento da república, o problema social da pobreza e das favelas já impactava a formação da cidade do Rio de Janeiro.

It is the analysis of a situation of degradation and, at the same time, the revitalization of the “Piabas” Stream, in Campina Grande, PB. As we tried to understand the complexity of the question, we have outlined a methodological path based on bibliographic and documentary research. In addition, we used the technique of participant observation, the application of semi-structured questionnaires and a photographic record. The analysis of the data took place from categories such as satisfaction regarding the situation of pollution, the diagnosis of the situation, and desire for change, critical to the public powers that be, such as State, Legislative, Executive and Judiciary, as well as suggestions for improvement and self-criticism. The results point to the fact that there is a potential conflict, that the definition of roles and responsibilities is not yet clear for the majority, that the public power has been relatively silent, that the schools, the teachers and children are actors with potential for transformation are essential, that the Community, despite being dissatisfied, has little if mobilized and that the linkage came to formalize and to unite forces in a movement of resistance some years ago, but who needs the strength of Community willing to enter and stay in the fight and, above all, modify their way of working and relationship with the environment in which they live, because that is the only way that there will be no transformation and revitalisation of the Piabas Stream and the dignity of the population contingent.

The private appropriation of nature and degrading is uneven, as it excludes the oppressed classes, called environmental injustice phenomenon. Nature is privatized via environmental licensing by the articulation between state and capital, backed by the myth of Sustainable Development promoter alliance impossible between growth and environmental protection, shock resistance and speech makeup of environmental impacts and conflicts, a process that draws the ecological crisis and its direct relationship with the hegemonic capitalist model. Making use of the dialectical method, through literature review and documentary research in public documents relating to the licensing process of doubling the highway BR- 116/392 in RS, licensed by the produced information (DNIT) and local newspapers, the survey aimed to identify limits and potential of environmental education (EE) in public management as mitigation and compensatory measure environmental and social impacts and their implications on the participation of affected communities for social control of the state and distribution of the burden and the bonus works and/or effective activities or potentially polluting, in view of the environmental injustice confrontation. Therefore, specific EE in this scenario were identified and related to its power to keep (EE Conservative) or exceed environmental injustice and degradation in nature (EE Manufacturing) taking advantage of the contradictory character of the state. Highlighted the influence of liberalism and neoliberalism in the Brazilian legal framework, pointing the contradictory and active role of the state to the front of capital accumulation outbursts concluding that environmental policies, where it operates the EE in general has not been successful to mitigate and/or compensate for the ecological crisis on the scale required, but only regulate the degradation and the private appropriation of nature, reifying who wins and who loses in this process. Finally, improvements are pointed EE linked to environmental licensing.
