[en] TENSIONS GENERATED BY SELF-INDUCED GRAVITATIONAL ACTION ON A SOLID SPHERE: APPLICATIONS TO STUDY THE DISTRIBUTION OF DENSITY AND ELASTICITY OF THE PLANETS / [pt] TENSÕES GERADAS POR AÇÃO GRAVITACIONAL AUTO-INDUZIDA EM UMA ESFERA MACIÇA: APLICAÇÕES PARA O ESTUDO DA DISTRIBUIÇÃO DE DENSIDADES E ELASTICIDADE DOS PLANETAS

CARLOS FERNANDO MARTINS PAMPLONA 27 March 2019 (has links)
[en] In the present work an analysis of the density distribution in large spherical bodies is made based on the stresses generated by gravitational action. Is is found that an eliptical expression for the radial density distribution in the form of the equation p=po[1-a(r/R)(2)](1/2) give reasonable results for the mechanical properties of earth interior. Starting with this assumption, several models for density distribution for terrestrial planets and earth s moon are analysed and proposed, based on the assumption of similiarity of core materials of these bodies. The value of moment of inertia as well as the diameter of the core of the inner planets of the solar system are estimated from those analyses. The models were developed admiting variable mechanical properties with pressure, as well as discontinuity on the density distribution, and the results compared with seismic data from geodesy and selenodesy. Extension of those results for other terrestrial planets were made in an attempt to obtain new informations about these planets, for wich little is know about its interior.

The effects of Risperidone on the vestibular system of healthy volunteers as assessed by dynamic computed posturography

Caccaviello, John Charles 12 July 2017 (has links)
The pharmacodynamic effects of Risperidone on the vestibular system were assessed via dynamic computed posturography in 12 healthy subjects (6 male). Subjects were administered 2 mg, orally, of Risperidone and assessed on the NeuroCom® Balance Master© system under varying conditions. The vestibular response was deductively quantified by first assessing balance with a static force plate and eyes closed (Condition 2), and then assessed on a dynamic force plate with eyes closed (Condition 5). On average, Condition 2 scores were 24.46 points higher than Condition 5 scores (95% CI [20.973, 27.957]). A Pearson correlation between scores in Condition 2 and 5 showed a significant, moderate positive correlation (r = .487, p <.001). A trend analysis showed the effect of time, post-dose, on equilibrium score to be linear in nature (p < .001). In conclusion, some, but not all, of the subjects involved in the study experienced diminished vestibular control after administration of Risperidone; this may be due to phenotypic differences or learning effects.

A pluralist theory of age discrimination

Goosey, Stuart January 2017 (has links)
This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive theory of age discrimination that can guide the direct and indirect age discrimination provisions of the Equality Act 2010. The Act holds that unequal treatment on the grounds of age and measures that are on their face age-neutral but have the effect of disadvantaging particular age groups are lawful only if the treatment can be shown either to be a 'proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim' or if the treatment fits into a specifically prescribed exception. In this way, the proportionality test distinguishes justified and unjustified age-differential treatment with only the former legally permissible. I outline and defend a pluralist theory of age discrimination that assists in making the distinction between justified and unjustified age-differential treatment. The theory identifies the principles that explain when and why age-differential treatment wrongs people and the principles that can justify this treatment. It is a pluralist theory because it recognises that age-differential treatment can wrong people for a number of different, overlapping reasons, and these different reasons should inform how we apply age discrimination law. The pluralist theory of age discrimination theory can improve legal reasoning in age discrimination cases by articulating the relevant principles and competing interests that are at stake in age discrimination claims. In constructing the theory, I adopt the reflective equilibrium method. This requires that I 'test' my starting moral intuitions against other beliefs, seeking coherence among these beliefs, and revising the beliefs as a result of particular challenges to them. In applying this method, I identify the following five principles to form a pluralist theory of age discrimination: equality of opportunity, social equality, respect, autonomy and efficiency.

On the Complexity of Market Equilibria and Revenue Maximization

Paparas, Dimitrios January 2017 (has links)
This thesis consists of two parts. In the first part, we concentrate on the computation of Market Equilibria and settle the long-standing open problem regarding the computation of an approximate Arrow-Debreu market equilibrium in markets with CES utilities. We prove that the problem is PPAD-complete when the Constant Elasticity of Substitution parameter $\rho$ is any constant less than -1. Building on this result, we introduce the notion of non-monotone utilities, which covers a wide variety of utility functions in economic theory, and prove that it is PPAD-hard to compute an approximate Arrow-Debreu market equilibrium in markets with linear and non-monotone utilities. In the second part, we study Revenue Maximization. We begin by resolving the complexity of the revenue-optimal Bayesian Unit-demand Item Pricing problem when the buyer's values for the items are independent. We show that the problem can be solved in polynomial time for distributions of support size 2; but its decision version is NP-complete for distributions of support size 3. Next, we study the optimal mechanism design problem for a single unit-demand buyer with item values drawn from independent distributions. We show that, for distributions of support-size 2 and the same high value, Item Pricing can achieve the same revenue as any menu of lotteries. On the other hand, we provide simple examples where randomization improves revenue. Finally, we show that unless the polynomial-time hierarchy collapses, namely P^{NP}=P^{#P}, there is no universal efficient randomized algorithm that implements an optimal mechanism even when distributions have support size 3.
