Theoretical and conceptual issues in leadership and complex military operations

Adeka, Muhammad I., Shepherd, Simon J., Abd-Alhameed, Raed January 2016 (has links)
No / This paper discusses theoretical and conceptual issues in leadership and how these apply to complex military operations in this global age. It identifies the reason for and the point at which the need for leadership arose among the early humans. It suggests the need for every human activity to be assessed within the context of its relative existence, based on the employment of accepted standards. Thereafter, the subject matter was treated under four main sections; namely, the Elements of Power, Leadership and its Sanctity, Concept of Military Operations, and Analosynthesis. With improvements in technology and mastery over their environments, the homo habilis gained control over their means of subsistence and the basic necessities of life. Their quest for better security and stability, in order to facilitate progressive developments, led to the emergence of community life. This was the stage at which the need for leadership, among humans, became apparent. Lessons on Leadership and Influence dictate that Power and Influence, which is one’s art of getting others to follow one’s lead, are best understood in terms of the interactions among the Elements of Power. The paper identified five enabling factors of power and influence; namely, how power works, how influence works, the TOPS Formula, the influence skills and cultural differences. These would enhance his ability to positively communicate with the led for maximum effect. Defined as a process of influencing a group of individuals to achieve a common goal, leadership is seen as a key variable in the development of human society. Any leader that fails to imbibe some ethical leadership values and principles that would guide his leadership, he would hardly gain the confidence and loyalty of the led. These include respect for others; service to others; justice, fairness and equity for all and sundry; honesty; resourcefulness; and truthfulness/trustworthiness – all leading to the building of a strong, united, virile and prosperous community. It is believed that the crises bedevilling Nigeria today, particularly Northern Nigeria, can be largely attributed to the negation of ethical values/principles on the part of our leaders, both past and present. It is hoped that the Change which Nigerian electorates voted for on 28th March 2015 would make the needed difference. A military operation is a set of activities characterised by mutual belligerent actions; regardless of how the opposing elements are defined, equipped or disposed. Hence, military operations may not be limited to the conventional battlefield; new forms of battlefields and domains of warfare will continue to emerge for as long as human technology is progressive. Currently, a critical analysis yields the existence of five warfare domains; namely, Land, Sea, Air, Space (Strategic Defence Initiative or Star Wars) and Cyber Space. In view of the above, even the concept of military operation, in terms of the troops that execute warfare, must also be re-assessed in tune with the dictates of globalisation. Thus, as opposed to seeing soldiers as some illiterates, dressed in ragtag attire and engaging in a “woo-chebe!” warfare; the contrary should now be the case. Soldiering should be seen as an enterprise for people traversing the entire levels of education/training throughout the social strata of the society; comprising the illiterate and semi-illiterate local informants, highly educated troops, and all shades of professionals and technocrats up to the University Professors, globally. Concomitantly, there is need to also re-evaluate, by reconfiguring and expanding, the concept of the military element of national power into a more suitable gauge of national strength - the socio-military element of national power. That is, the military is no longer expected to function effectively independent of its wider society setting. In a nutshell, for one to succeed as a leader of officers and men in a military operation, one must first of all imbibe the general principles/values of ethical leadership expected of all categories of leaders, as enumerated above. In addition to these, one must then train to internalise those other attributes that would sustain one in leadership position as one confronts an uncertain death; namely, valour, bravery, courage, faithfulness and an existence of a balanced coordination between a healthy mind and a healthy body. / Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF)

Tienerswangerskap en die verwerpingsbelewing by 'n groep swanger hoërskoolleerders / Judith P. Rigaard

Rigaard, Judith Petronella January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this African culturally based research is to establish whether a group of unmarried pregnant teenage girls experience rejection during their period of pregnancy as well as to determine whether they experienced rejection for whatever reason before falling pregnant. Seen in the context of the communal and person-centred life view as upheld by the African culture where respect for and well-being of the individual within the tribal and extended family structure is paramount, one would expect that unmarried girls finding themselves in a precarious situation such as premature pregnancy would experience understanding, acceptance and support. The research is quantitative as well as qualitative. The quantitative research focuses on 341 grade 11-leamers at seven secondary schools in the Free State Province of Education as well as in the Gauteng Department of Education. Questionnaires were presented with the aim of establishing the reason for teenage pregnancy; to research the thoughts, feelings and actions of the peer group toward pregnant teenage girls; to determine the presence of feelings of rejection of a group of pregnant teenage girls at the same schools; to determine the thoughts the girls have about themselves as well as about the future. On account of the fact that that the responses of the pregnant girls seemingly contradicted the responses given by the grade 11-peer group sample it was decided to supplement the quantitative research result with a qualitative research investigation by means of focus group interviews conducted with twelve willing to participate pregnant girls at two ofthe secondary schools who voluntarily agreed to participate. The research result indicates that although the pregnant girls did not experience rejection before falling pregnant they did however experience rejection after falling pregnant, especially from the peer group at school, educators, and certain sections of society. Although the parents of these girls were initially offended and reluctant, their attitude toward the pregnancy changed to include acceptance and even support. / M.A. Psychology, North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2010

A percepÃÃo de prÃticas de responsabilidade social e valores Ãticos corporativos no comprometimento organizacional e satisfaÃÃo no trabalho em uma instituiÃÃo bancÃria / The perception of social responsibility practices and corporate ethical values in organizational commitment and job satisfaction in a bank

Emanuel Dheison dos Santos Penha 18 September 2015 (has links)
This study aims to analyze the influence of the perception of Practice for Corporate Social Responsibility (PCSR) and Ethical Values Corporative (EVC) on Job Satisfaction (JS) and Organizational Commitment (OC) of employees of a financial institution, installed on state of CearÃ. The research had the following objectives to investigate the influence of corporate ethical values in job satisfaction; check the influence of corporate ethical values in organizational commitment; evaluate the influence of corporate ethical values in the perception of Corporate Social Responsibility Practices (CSR); investigate the influence of the perception of CSR practices in job satisfaction; check the influence of the perception of CSR practices in organizational commitment; evaluate the relationship between job satisfaction and organizational commitment; assess the influence of sociodemographic variables in the perception of corporate social responsibility practices in organizational commitment, the perception of corporate ethical values and job satisfaction. The research is quantitative held by a case study. Appealed to the exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis to validate the scales, the structural equation model for confirming the assumptions and techniques univariate and multivariate to verify the effect of sociodemographic variables in the constructs. The hypotheses of the research studies are: corporate ethical values positively influence job satisfaction; corporate ethical values positively influence organizational commitment; corporate ethical values positively influence the perception of corporate social responsibility practices of employees; the perception of CSR positively influences job satisfaction; the perception of corporate social responsibility practices positively influence the organizational commitment; there is a positive correlation between job satisfaction and organizational commitment; employees and volunteers have higher satisfaction levels at work, perception of social responsibility practices Corporate and Organizational Commitment. The results show that the accession of the company to ethical and socially responsible behavior positively affects job satisfaction and organizational commitment of employees. Logo, business investments that want to keep their committed and satisfied employees, should attach importance to the development and effective dissemination of a code of ethics, as well as the accession of CSR practices. Another point highlighted was that participating employees of any bank volunteer program have better rates of PRSC, CO and ST. Therefore, develop, disseminate and put into practice volunteer programs in the organization can generate competitive advantage in business because they help retain talent. It was also found that VEC prior to PRSC; the PRSC positively affect the CO and ST of respondents. So, for your employees, socially responsible company appearance passes by the realization company is ethical. The results also show that employees who occupy higher positions had average rates of greater awareness for the four constructs, and the charge of socio-demographic variable that most influenced the perception indices. The limitations of the research, it has not representativeness of the sample, the presence of many outliers, the questionnaire directly in the organization and the fact that the structural equation model canât ensure a relationship of cause and effect. For future research, it is suggested to replicate the study in a larger population at national level, in a probabilistic sample in an approach of mixed methods.

"Den önskvärda förskolan" : En kvalitativ studie om vårdnadshavares förväntningar på förskolans verksamhet för barns utveckling / "The desirable preschool" : A qualitative study of guardians' expectations of preschool function for children's development

Rosenlund, Emelie, Bergström Gröndin, Louise January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to contribute knowledge about the guardians' perspective on the preschool's role for children's opportunities for development. Based on the purpose, there are two research questions that are central to the study: What values emerge in the guardians' expressed expectations about what the preschool should contribute to in children's development? And what expectations do the guardians have of how the preschool should contribute to children's development? Social constructionism is used as an overall theoretical perspective. The results of the study has been analyzed using a modified model based on Anette Emilson's model "Communicating values" and previous research. The study uses a qualitative method where data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 13 guardians who has at least one child in preschool. The results show different expectations about what preschool is expected to contribute to in children's developing with a focus on caring ethical, democratic, disciplining and knowledgeable values. The results also highlight how preschool is expected to contribute to children's development taking place from the guardians' perspective, where the guardians expect an individualized operation.
