A morte celular programada desta glândula apresenta características apoptóticas... . / The species Polistes versicolor is known as an excellent model for the study of neotropical wasps because of its wide distribution, number of papers on it, kind of social organization and also because the genus Polistes is considered essential to the understanding of the evolution of the social behaviour. This work shows the results of behavioural study, associated to histochemical analysis of the ectal mandibular gland and the description of its programmed cell death process. It also presents a note on a viral infection found in the epithelial cells of this wasp. In any phase of its colonial development, P. versicolor, shows monoginic colonies. The subordinates present momentary specialization, being all individuals able to develop any activity, independently of their age or caste. The males extend a care behaviour towards the progeny and the nest, however this behaviour is not so frequent. Copulation between possible siblings were observed. The histochemical pattern of ectal mandibular gland evidenced the presence of proteins, lipids and neutral glicoconjugates in concentrations that vary according to the colony development. The variation in the secretion compounds may be related to the population density of adults and/or immature individuals in the nest. Signs of the programmed cell death process were observed in individuals among 20 and 25 days old, although many variations were observed, indicating that there was not a strict age cycle. The programmed cell death characteristic found in this gland renders apoptotical and non-apoptotical features, like observed in different adult insects. Finally, a case of viral infection by Nucleopolyhedrovirus in epithelial 4 cells, near the ectal mandibular gland, and haemocytes, probably derived from its preys, was described with a discussion about probable infection ways.

There had been used 420 chicks with one day old of seven genotypes. At 28 days old, they have been allowed access to the paddocks. After a period of three days of adaptation, monitoring of animals was initiated, from the 31st to the 84th days old, during which the behavioral visual observations were performed from 07:00 until 17:00 hours. The cloacae temperature and frequency respiratory were collected once a week at 09:00 and 15:00 hours. The data of dry bulb temperature, relative humidity and black globe temperature were obtained by means of thermometers installed at various points of the paddocks and the poultry house, collected four times a day. The physiological variables were evaluated using a randomized block design with split plots. The behavioral variables were analyzed using the nonparametric Friedman test. During the experimental period the mean air temperature inside the poultry house was kept at 21.5?C and relative humidity at 74.6%. In the paddocks, the average temperature was maintained at 23.2?C and humidity at 64.7%. There was an increase in BGT between 8:00 and almost up to 14:00 hours, decreasing after this time. The birds of the strains Carij? and Colorpak showed frequency respiratory higher compared to the birds of the strains Caboclo and Gigante Negro. The mean frequency respiratory and cloacal temperatures for all strains were higher in the afternoon. For the behaviors eating, drinking, exploring feathers, non-aggressive pecking, aggressive pecking, movement discomfort, scratching and dust-bathing there was no effect (P <0.05) of the strain at 07:00 hours in the morning. The strains Caboclo and the Gigante Negro which were obtained the lowest average number of animals sitting and higher average number of birds foraging at 07:00 hours in the morning. As from 09:00 hours there was a reduction in foraging behavior and increased sitting behavior. For eating behavior increased in 09:00 hours of observation in relation to 07:00 hours and consequently increase in water consumption for all strains. Increased movement of discomfort can be noticed between 11:00 and 15:00 hours. From the 15:00 hours of foraging behavior became more intense. The strains Caboclo and Gigante Negro had better adaptability to the semi-intensive farming system compared to other strains. Physiologically, the birds of the strains Caboclo and Gigante Negro were more able to maintain their body temperature and frequency respiratory at lower levels

They have being modernized through the time and acquiring a new concept in education and research, in which the conservation of the species is placed in the foreground. The research in captivity cover many areas of study, such as parasitology, pathology, genetics, and more, allowing closer contact with the animal and making it easier to access the information that is difficult to get in nature. However, the study of animal behavior stands out among these areas, as it collaborates with several researches, allowing a more detailed knowledge about the behavioral characteristics of the species, as described in this study. Populations of black lions tamarins (Leontopithecus chrysopygus) kept in captivity are targets of researches that aim to get more information about the species, helping their conservation. The preparation of a detailed behavioral catalog for the species was the objective of this article, emphasizing the description and analysis of reproductive and socio-reproductive behavior. Took part in the first stage of the study four couples of captive black lions tamarins in an extra section of the São Paulo Zoo. In the second stage, there were more four captives couples from the Conservation Center of Wild Fauna of the State of São Paulo (CECFAU), where two of them also belonged to the previous group. The observations lasted four months in each study area and were held from Ad libitum methods to make the ethogram (90 full observation hours) and focal animal with instant registration, with 30-minute sessions and 1-minute intervals for frequency analysis. It was also analyzed the use of the grounds of the using area (divided into quadrants) and the proximity of the animals, which have resulted in a high frequency of use of the upper quadrants in the sections of the Sao Paulo Zoo, as well as the holding area and plays in facilities of the CECFAU, being noticed, in both areas, the animals away from each other most of the time of the observation. Forty-five different behavioral acts were detected, divided into 11 behavioral categories to make the analysis of the frequencies easier. The categories most performed by the animals were Locomotion, Food and Physiological behavior for couples of the Sao Paulo Zoo, as well as for couples CECFAU, except for the category “Not visible” that showed high representativeness for this latter individuals, corroborating the frequency that the animals stay in holding area and burrows, where they were out of the observer's reach. In Reproductive and Socio-reproductive behaviors were observed "copulation", "smell genital”, "hold behind", "copulation simulation" and "genital markings". It is suggested non-invasive endocrine studies, by analyzing fecal metabolites concentrations that, associated with observations of behavior, can certainly help the reproductive study of the species.

For elaboration of the behavioral repertoire the observations were accomplished in 21 colonies in natural conditions with 20 hours of qualitative observations and 80 hours of quantitative observations. Thirty behavior acts were identified, of which 23 were executed by queens and 29 by workers and 22 in common. Just the act of to initiation new cells was exclusive of the queen, while the workers presented seven exclusive acts. Through the hybrid multidimensional scaling could be verified that the behaviors of to dominate physically and to request food characterized the queen caste; while the behaviors of: trofalaxis adult-adult, to destroy cells, give alarm, forage prey, forage nectar and failure forager characterized the worker caste. The queen spends more time in the nest executing domination activities, while the workers execute of the related tasks to the maintenance of the colonies / O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a divisão de trabalho entre as castas de Mischocyttarus consimilis.

The species of social wasp Polistes simillimus Zikan, 1951 has a wide distribuition throughout Brazil, but there is little information avaliable about its social organization. Part of this deficiency can be made good by an ethological study. In that way the present work sought to deepen the understanding of the basic behaviour of the species as well as its social and hierarchial organization. In order to elaborate the basic ethogran of the species and to classify its behavioural aspects 37 hours of recordings were made in the post-emergence phase of the biological cycle of the colony. The evaluation of the dominance hierarchy, of the position in the nest and of the behavioural frequency of dominant and subordinate females was developed in 40 hours of registers in the colony in the pre-emergence phase. The behavioural repertory of P, simillimus showed 43 behavioural acts including the unknown register of three behaviours. The individual tasks had a greater percentage (46,52%) than in the other categories: group (27,90%), partioning (13,95%) and team (6,98%), suggesting that the species studied has a low degree of complexity in the division and organization of work. The hierarchy of dominance shows itself in a structure of the linear type, where the highest female of the ranking is responsible for most of the dominance interactions. The dominant female was registered on the front of the honeycomb during most of the time, while the subordinates spent more time outside of the colony. The behavioural traits directly linked to the activities of the dominance and subordination exhibited significant differences between the dominant and subordinate females. The results encountered in this study revealed that the social organization of P. similliinus during the pre-emergence phase was very similar to the social structure exhibited by the other species of Polistes studied. Accordingly, studies in greater depth should be carried out in the post-emergence phase, in which the growth of the population and of the nest could involve the presence of more than one dominant female.

Semioquímicos envolvidos no comportamento de acasalamento de Cyrtomon luridus Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) e na interação com a planta hospedeira Duboisia sp. (Solanaceae) / Semiochemicals involved in the mating behavior of Cyrtomon luridus Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and interaction with the host plant Duboisia sp. (Solanaceae)

Kamiya, Aline Cristiane 18 August 2015 (has links)
This work aimed to study the mating behavior of Cyrtomon luridus Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), as well as the presence of semiochemicals mediating the mating and the interaction of the insects with the host plant, Duboisia sp. (Solanaceae). Newly emerged males and females adults were collected in the field and taken to the laboratory. Initially it determined the best morphological parameter to differentiate males and females. It was found that males possess the genital opening occluded by the last tergite. The mating behavior was observed in virgin couples for nine days. It was found that males and females C. luridus reached sexual maturity two days after emergence. Males and females made repeated matings with the same partner at any time of day. The mating behavior was clearly divided into the pre-copulatory, copulatory, and post-copulatory phases. In addition, olfatometrics studies revealed that males and females C. luridus were strongly attracted to volatile males feeding on the host plant. The collection and analysis of these volatiles revealed the compounds (Z)-3-hexenal, hexanal, (E)-2-hexenal, (E)-2-hexen-1-ol, phenylacetaldehyde, linalool and geraniol as being eletrophysiologically. The present work brings important information about the mating behavior and chemical ecology of Entiminae, which will serve as support for studies with other species of this important subfamily of Curculionidae.

It was recently discovered in the wild, and few studies are known for this species. Understanding behavioral patterns of species threatened by extinction is essential for developing effective conservation strategies. Here we describe the behavioral repertoire of a group of this species maintained by the São Paulo Zoological Park Foundation. We carried out observations between October 2014 and February 2015, totaling 348 hours of sampling effort through ad libitum continuous record, in two different environmental conditions, both in in pairs and in flock. We described 60 behavioral states, grouped in categories maintenance, locomotion, feeding, social, stereotyped, reproductive and alert. We also found five patterns of vocalization (alarm, contact, cohesion, reproduction and imitation). Most of the behaviors described for other species is also reported here to A. leari, more similar to A. hyacinthinus. We discuss the differences in order to contribute to the formulation of a behavioral profile for this species, and with information that may assist in maintaining normal behavior in captivity.

The phylum Mollusca is composed by several species that are largely used in many economic sectors such as food and public health. Because of it, there was a dissemination of alien species among several parts of the world, what make necessary the knowledge of life cycle and behavior in the regions of introduction of these species, in order to predict possible damages to native fauna and flora. These studies are also important to the development of control strategies in case of populations increase, turning a species into a pest, besides, its is useful tin case of using a species as biological control. Rumina decollata (Linnaeus, 1758) is a land snail from Mediterranean area that was introduced in the North of USA to control populations of Helix aspersa Müller, 1774 in citrus sp plantations, however, occurred an overpopulation that lead to a prohibition of R. decollata entrance and rearing in this country and nowadays, the species is found in South America in Argentina and Brazil. There is a lack of studies that describe the behavioral biology and the lifecycle of this species in Brazil, despite its occurrence in some districts of the country. This study was realized in order to clarify biological traits such growth, reproduction and behavior of this species in laboratory conditions. For life cycle assay, snails were created grouped (10 snails/ group) and isolated (30 snails 1/goup). To analyze growth patterns, snails were weighted and measured every month. The isolation was to verify the occurrence of self-fertilization and to compare the time to onset sexual maturity, fecundity and egg hatchability. Results showed that snails grouped and isolated differed in growth between 0 and 60 days, with high rate to isolated snails. There was stabilization that characterize determinate growth pattern that differ from other subulinids. Weight was significantly different, with higher rates to grouped snails. It was not observed mortality in isolated snails during the observation period. The reaching of maturity occurred from 90 days for grouped snails and from 120 days to isolate. It was verified selffertilization, although the cross fertilization seems to be the pattern what can be confirmed by the higher number of viable eggs. It was evidenced that R. decollata showed differences in its biology when compared to studies realized in other regions. To describe behavior of juvenile and adult individuals, it was used 30 snails of each age, observed for 24 hours by the scan samplé method. Adult and juvenile were more active during nocturnal period, with only one act (“Interact”) significantly different during the 24 hours, with more interaction between adults. Adult and juvenile showed difference in the acts “Feed” and “Dislocate” in two and three different hours in nocturnal period respectively. It was not observed influence of relative air humidity, but there was a correlation between mean temperature and the activity of adult and juvenile snails. Such results demonstrate that the activity period of R. decollata is alike to other terrestrial snails, including subulinids. The difference between behavioral displays of juvenile and adults indicate the occurrence of niche differentiation.

The aim of this study was to elaborate a basic ethogram for adult individuals of Tropidurus itambere, through observations accomplished in field and outdoor and indoor enclosures and to study the thermal ecology and the sexual dimorphism of the lizards, on December 2006 and between February and November 2007. The observations of the behaviors were accomplished by the method of the focal animal and scan, totalizing 285 hours of registrations. In the artificial enclosures the lizards were observed in five situations: (1) individual alone; (2) 1 male + 1 male; (3) 1 male + 1 female (4) 2 males + 1 female (5) 1 female + 1 female. The behaviors exhibited by the captive individuals were similar to those observed in the field. We registered 78 behavioral acts distributed in nine functional categories. The head bob was the act more frequently exhibited by the species, having been observed in all the treatments in the outdoor enclosure. The behaviors head bob and to lick the substratum seem to act together as signs of recognition of the area. The body temperature average of activity of T. itambere was 32,08 ± 3,36ºC and it presented seasonal variation accompanying the environmental temperatures. The temperatures of the microhabitats (substratum and air) influenced the body temperature of the lizards so that in the rainy season just the temperature of the air affected the temperature of the lizards and, in the dry season, just the temperature of the substratum affected the temperature of individuals. The analyses showed a significant difference in size and shape of the body and mass between the sexes, with the males being heavier and larger, presenting the measures of all the morphometrics variables significantly larger than the measures of the females, except for the width of the abdomen whose average of the females was larger than that of the males, even so that difference was not significant. The discriminant analysis selected the size of the head (RCT) as the variable that better explained the differences between the sexes, having classified correctly 89,5% of the individuals.
