The genus Polistes is an organism model to understand the sociobiology in invertebrates. This group presents low caste differentiation that result in potencial reproductive conflicts between nestmates. The construction os satellite nests and their effects on the colonial structure in some Polistes are an interesting topic to the evolution of socail behavior. In this study we quantify the seasonal patterns of nest development and thei composition. We analyzed the relationship between these patterns and climatic variation. The aspects related to the hierarchy of dominance in P. satan were compared to a theoretical model that predicts a dominance hierarchy im equilibrium. In addition, we presented the agressive interaction between individuals composing a hierarchy in experimental (dominant removal) and control colonies. Patterns of both visual (dominance labels) and chemical communication (cuticular hydrocarbons) were also verified in P. Satan. Dominant females from pre-emergence colonies present both distinct patterns of cephalic pigmentation and cuticular hydrocarbons than other females. These aspects involved with the sociobiology of Polistes and their biological implications are discussed in this study.

A morte celular programada desta glândula apresenta características apoptóticas... . / The species Polistes versicolor is known as an excellent model for the study of neotropical wasps because of its wide distribution, number of papers on it, kind of social organization and also because the genus Polistes is considered essential to the understanding of the evolution of the social behaviour. This work shows the results of behavioural study, associated to histochemical analysis of the ectal mandibular gland and the description of its programmed cell death process. It also presents a note on a viral infection found in the epithelial cells of this wasp. In any phase of its colonial development, P. versicolor, shows monoginic colonies. The subordinates present momentary specialization, being all individuals able to develop any activity, independently of their age or caste. The males extend a care behaviour towards the progeny and the nest, however this behaviour is not so frequent. Copulation between possible siblings were observed. The histochemical pattern of ectal mandibular gland evidenced the presence of proteins, lipids and neutral glicoconjugates in concentrations that vary according to the colony development. The variation in the secretion compounds may be related to the population density of adults and/or immature individuals in the nest. Signs of the programmed cell death process were observed in individuals among 20 and 25 days old, although many variations were observed, indicating that there was not a strict age cycle. The programmed cell death characteristic found in this gland renders apoptotical and non-apoptotical features, like observed in different adult insects. Finally, a case of viral infection by Nucleopolyhedrovirus in epithelial 4 cells, near the ectal mandibular gland, and haemocytes, probably derived from its preys, was described with a discussion about probable infection ways.

The vitellogenin is a lipoglycoprotein synthesized in the fat body, released to the hemolymph and absorbed by oocytes during vitellogenesis. The vitellogenin receptor (VgR) is responsible for the absorption of vitellogenin during egg formation in insects. The developing oocyte is surrounded by a follicular epithelium and during vitellogenin uptake are formed intercellular spaces between the follicular cells, a phenomenon termed as patency. In some Hymenoptera, vitellogenic follicles show vitellogenin in the cytoplasm of follicular cells suggesting a transcellular route of vitellogenin until oocyte surface. Thus, this study examined the possible presence of VgR in the follicular cells of honey bee Apis mellifera and wasp Polistes simillimus ovaries to verify whether vitellogenin is transported by the transcellular route in these insects. A specific anti-VgR antibody was produced from a highly conserved sequence of this receptor (fragment of the second repeat region YWTD), expressed in transformed E. coli (pET BL21). The Western blotting analysis confirmed that the antibody was specific for VgR and that this protein was present in membrane protein extracts from ovaries of both species. Immunofluorescence analyzes associated with immunocytochemistry showed VgR in the apical and basal plasma membrane of follicular cells of vitellogenic follicles of A. mellifera and P. simillimus. This study suggest that the protein may have been transported from basal to apical cell membrane domain with subsequent release in the perivitelline space, evidenced by the presence of myelin figures with VgR in this region. These data support the hypothesis that the vitellogenin was transported via receptor by the transcellular route in the follicular cells of bees and wasps.

Food Quantity Affects Traits of Offspring in the Paper Wasp Polistes Metricus (Hymenoptera: Vespidae)

Karsai, István, Hunt, James H. 01 January 2002 (has links)
The effects of food quantity on the morphology and development of the paper wasp Polistes metricus Say are studied, and experimental results are compared with predictions of the parental manipulation hypothesis. Food deprivation led to smaller female offspring. By hand feeding larvae we used a technique that counteracts the queen's hypothesized ability to restrict food provisioning. Hand feeding larvae did not result in larger offspring, but their abdomen was wider and heavier and the hand-fed wasps survived longer in a cold test. We infer that hand-fed colonies produced more gynes and fewer workers than did control colonies. Results of a restricted nourishment treatment do not support the differential feeding hypothesis, because in fasting colonies the emergence of all larvae was delayed by a month, and we did not detect discriminatory feeding of particular larvae for faster emergence. Although fasting colonies produced fewer offspring, the sex ratio did not show significant differences from the other groups. These data suggest that Polistes metricus colonies are partly able to respond to different nutritional conditions by allocating excess food to increase the number of gynes at the expense of workers.

On the development and maintenance of a social wasp colony, need to search and use environmental resources, as the water, used in the control of the temperature; vegetable fiber, utilized on the construction and repair of cells and comb; carbohydrate to feeding larvae and adults, obtained mainly in nectary and fruits; and animal protein, used to feeding larvae, proceeding, most of the time, to predation of caterpillar. On this way, the study of the forage schedule, material foraged and to transfers colonies to other areas, using the species Polistes versicolor as test, objectives of this study, can evidence characteristics of the species that reveal its potential in programs that aiming its use as agent control of eucalyptus plagues. On the period of January to December of 2007, were accomplished 24 observations of the P. versicolor foraging activity colonies were present in an eucaliptal, on the municipal district of Juiz de Fora, MINAS GERAIS, totalizing 240 hours. During 10 hours were registered, to every 30 minutes, intensity light, wind speed, air humidity and temperature on the colony proximities; also were registered and qualified, the workers' returns according to methodology proposal for Prezoto et al. (1994). On the same period, were transferred 20 P. versicolor colonies, in post-emergency, retreats of human constructions and transferred for artificial shelters installed in eucalyptus plantation. The P. versicolor foraging activity began about the seven hours and thirty minutes and it extended even 18 hours. The workers average of departures/hour were 9.62 ±16.67 (0-84) with a total of 1792 on 240 hours observation, and returns/hour 9.76 ±18.14 (0-87) with a total of 1809 on the observation hours. The colonies activity pick happened on the period understood between the 10 hours and even 15 hours. The Spearman correlation test revealed that the P. versicolor workers exits were stimulated by the increase of the light intensity and air temperature; and decrease of the humidity. The multivariate linear regression analysis showed that air temperature is the variable that most influence on the P. versicolor foraging activity. On this work was registered 1809 returns, being 51.63% were with nectar; 6.85% water; 4.7% vegetable fiber; 19.40% unproductive and 17.41% with preys. P. versicolor workers preying exclusively caterpillars, being this only animal protein offered to the immature ones that were developed in the colony. The 20 P. versicolor colonies used in the work was collected and transferred with 85% of success, due to the fact of after the establishment of the colony in the artificial shelter, the individuals stayed in the nest. The present study revealed that P. versicolor offered characteristics that make possible its use in programs of handling integrated plagues using wasps as agents of biological control.

WASP AND BIRD NESTING INTERACTIONS WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO POLISTES DOMINULA

Earley, Christopher Gene 15 August 2013 (has links)
Polistes dominula and P. fuscatus often nest in bird nest boxes. Potential competition between wasps and birds was studied by removing wasp nests from some boxes. No difference in nesting success of breeding birds was found between boxes with wasp nests and those in which wasp nests were removed. Boxes that never had a wasp nest and boxes from which wasp nests were removed differed greatly in bird occupancy, suggesting that birds detected previous wasp presence. Some bird species gain protection by nesting near wasp nests. Birds may prefer to nest near wasp species that inflict higher sting pain levels. A rank correlation of data from published studies provided no evidence that pain level influences which wasp nests are most attractive to nesting birds. A comprehensive table of bird-wasp nesting associations (listing 121 bird species, 28 wasp species and 4 bee species) is included here.

The species of social wasp Polistes simillimus Zikan, 1951 has a wide distribuition throughout Brazil, but there is little information avaliable about its social organization. Part of this deficiency can be made good by an ethological study. In that way the present work sought to deepen the understanding of the basic behaviour of the species as well as its social and hierarchial organization. In order to elaborate the basic ethogran of the species and to classify its behavioural aspects 37 hours of recordings were made in the post-emergence phase of the biological cycle of the colony. The evaluation of the dominance hierarchy, of the position in the nest and of the behavioural frequency of dominant and subordinate females was developed in 40 hours of registers in the colony in the pre-emergence phase. The behavioural repertory of P, simillimus showed 43 behavioural acts including the unknown register of three behaviours. The individual tasks had a greater percentage (46,52%) than in the other categories: group (27,90%), partioning (13,95%) and team (6,98%), suggesting that the species studied has a low degree of complexity in the division and organization of work. The hierarchy of dominance shows itself in a structure of the linear type, where the highest female of the ranking is responsible for most of the dominance interactions. The dominant female was registered on the front of the honeycomb during most of the time, while the subordinates spent more time outside of the colony. The behavioural traits directly linked to the activities of the dominance and subordination exhibited significant differences between the dominant and subordinate females. The results encountered in this study revealed that the social organization of P. similliinus during the pre-emergence phase was very similar to the social structure exhibited by the other species of Polistes studied. Accordingly, studies in greater depth should be carried out in the post-emergence phase, in which the growth of the population and of the nest could involve the presence of more than one dominant female.
