Querying big data with bounded data access

Cao, Yang January 2016 (has links)
Query answering over big data is cost-prohibitive. A linear scan of a dataset D may take days with a solid state device if D is of PB size and years if D is of EB size. In other words, polynomial-time (PTIME) algorithms for query evaluation are already not feasible on big data. To tackle this, we propose querying big data with bounded data access, such that the cost of query evaluation is independent of the scale of D. First of all, we propose a class of boundedly evaluable queries. A query Q is boundedly evaluable under a set A of access constraints if for any dataset D that satisfies constraints in A, there exists a subset DQ ⊆ D such that (a) Q(DQ) = Q(D), and (b) the time for identifying DQ from D, and hence the size |DQ| of DQ, are independent of |D|. That is, we can compute Q(D) by accessing a bounded amount of data no matter how big D grows. We study the problem of deciding whether a query is boundedly evaluable under A. It is known that the problem is undecidable for FO without access constraints. We show that, in the presence of access constraints, it is decidable in 2EXPSPACE for positive fragments of FO queries, but is already EXPSPACE-hard even for CQ. To handle the undecidability and high complexity of the analysis, we develop effective syntax for boundedly evaluable queries under A, referred to as queries covered by A, such that, (a) any boundedly evaluable query under A is equivalent to a query covered by A, (b) each covered query is boundedly evaluable, and (c) it is efficient to decide whether Q is covered by A. On top of DBMS, we develop practical algorithms for checking whether queries are covered by A, and generating bounded plans if so. For queries that are not boundedly evaluable, we extend bounded evaluability to resource-bounded approximation and bounded query rewriting using views. (1) Resource-bounded approximation is parameterized with a resource ratio a ∈ (0,1], such that for any query Q and dataset D, it computes approximate answers with an accuracy bound h by accessing at most a|D| tuples. It is based on extended access constraints and a new accuracy measure. (2) Bounded query rewriting tackles the problem by incorporating bounded evaluability with views, such that the queries can be exactly answered by accessing cached views and a bounded amount of data in D. We study the problem of deciding whether a query has a bounded rewriting, establish its complexity bounds, and develop effective syntax for FO queries with a bounded rewriting. Finally, we extend bounded evaluability to graph pattern queries, by extending access constraints to graph data. We characterize bounded evaluability for subgraph and simulation patterns and develop practical algorithms for associated problems.

Because this is a recent insertion of the discipline in higher education, this work aims to understand the performance of the professor of Libras in the discipline that is offered in the degrees of five public higher education institutions of the State of Goiás, through the analysis of its discourse, mainly discriminating the main obstacles and challenges found by him in the classroom practice. It is a quantitative-qualitative study, sinceit has characteristics of data collection aimed at qualitative research, such as the interview, but also uses statistical data in the analysis of the corpus. The sample was attended by nine teachers from Libras, four deaf and five listeners, who are active in public higher education in Goiás. The interviews that were based on a semi-structured script were collected. Subsequently, these data were transcribed into the Portuguese language. The computational tool WordSmith Tools Scott (2017) was used in order to allow the data to be filtered through a quantitative perspective, and the System of Assessability, as a linguistic orientator of the analyzes. This was proposed by Martin And White (2005), whose founding principle was the Systemic-Functional Language of Halliday (1994). The teachers' discourse showed that they positively evaluate the insertion of Libras in higher education, but despite this assessment, have faced serious structural and political problems with the development of the discipline. They self-evaluate as good professionals and show interest in improving their methodology for the best teaching of the language. The teachers' main challenges were the low hours of the discipline versus the large amount of content, the absence of the interpreter as a support for deaf teachers and courseware, as well as the lack of a theoretical contribution that guides the classroom under the evaluation and courseware aspect, among others. In view of the results obtained and the scarce bibliographic reference found in the area, it is believed that this research will contribute to the development of further studies regarding the performance of the Libras teacher, as well as to the improvement of policies aimed at the present discipline in higher education.

Salvador

INTEGRATING EVALUABILITY ASSESSMENT IN AFTER SCHOOL AND YOUTH PROGRAMMING RESEARCH

Jones, Gareth James January 2013 (has links)
This thesis provides a review of after school research with a special focus on selected research methods. It identifies several important methodological issues in the literature which have contributed to a sometimes confusing body of research for after school program coordinators and service staff to interpret. The potential utility of evaluability assessment (EA) in the field of after school program research is discussed, and EA is proposed as a pre-evaluation method to be adapted as the first step in the scientific process for subsequent evaluative research. EA techniques are then applied in the initial phase of a partnership with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation's after school program. Structural and theoretical recommendations are provided, and specific topics for future research initiatives are identified. The incorporation of a specified EA criteria into the evaluative process is recommended, so as to provide timely, relevant, and useful information for both practitioners and academics. This thesis aims to further reduce the disconnect between research and practice in the field of after school, out-of-school-time, and youth recreation research. / Tourism and Sport

Sensitivity to the magnitude of people's help depends on how it is framed

Wingren, Mattias January 2019 (has links)
A study was conducted to examine if people’s sensitivity to the magnitude to which somebody helps depends on how the help is framed. To test this, participants read vignettes about moral agents whose help had one of three different magnitudes: a base level, a medium level (the base level times 5) and a high level (the base level times 10). The moral agents’ help was also framed in one of three ways. They either helped victims, volunteered a number of hours, or donated an amount to charity. To measure the sensitivity, participants rated how likeable they found the agent. It turned out that if the help was framed as helping victims, the participants were not at all sensitive to the different magnitudes of help. That is, an agent was not liked more if they helped a high or medium number of victims than if they helped a low number; neither were they liked more if they helped a high number than if they helped a medium number. However, in the two other types of framing, participants were more sensitive. When help was framed as volunteering a number of hours, participants liked an agent more if they volunteered a medium or high number of hours than if they only volunteered a low number of hours. But they did not like a participant more if they volunteered a high number of hours than if they volunteered a medium number of hours. The same exact pattern was found when framing help as donating to charity. A possible explanation for the result is given in the discussion.
