Architecture is not enough

Jones-Evans, Dale, dale@dje.com.au January 2009 (has links)
The research covered quite a bit of territory with the simple objective - to 'break free' of the 'risk' of continuing architectural patterns in practice through and beyond mid career. On reflection I identified four stages within the history of my practice covering three disciplines; art, architecture and the political economies relation with urban geography. I was hoping to tie these together in a more coherent way and write reflectively to deepen those relations. I declined practicing architecture (late 2003-2006), inflamed an old love affair with 'fine art' and curated sound-art events, designed art-theatre-performance works and installations, continued free-prose writings and visited specific Australian and aboriginal (continent) places and adjacent world destinations. I consolidated the 'art studio' within and returned to architectural practice by 2007. The dissertation about this 'episode of behavior' galvanised many insights into time and the illusive and expansive nature of deep-space. And engaged understanding death in an unusual and liberating way, which ran an exponential affirmation through and beyond life as we know it. Though abstract, these thoughts (and journeys) began to mould ideas for projects within an understood 'complexity'. This assisted my desire for 'the simplicity of elegance' - in everything, and specifically fortified arguments for a multivalent kind of architecture.

Karlsson, Caroline January 2013 (has links)
Background: In Sweden aproximately 30 000 people suffers a stroke every year and a third of the victims are also affected by disabilty. The life of families and relatives of the victim is also affected. Problem: Previous research shows that nurses may find it difficult to take part of patients’ experiences when they are affected by disabilty after a stroke. This may be something that can affect the nursing care. Aim: To describe the victims’ experiences of living with disabilty after a stroke. Method: A qualitative literature review based on scientific articles with a descriptive synthesis by Evans as the method of analysis. Result: The experiences that came upp were divided into three different themes which were linked to the changed body, the changed self and the changed future. The subthemes were linked to the control and the lack of control of the body, a new self and a new role, loss of independence, recovery and positive thoughts about the future. Conclusion: Living with disabilities after a stroke is something that affects the victim both physically, mentally and spiritually and it will be a life changing event. Nurses should be aware of these experiences to make the nursing care as good as possible.

Synaptogenesis and spinogenesis of adult hippocampal neurogenesis in laboratory long-evans rat exposed to enriched environment

Uzokwe, Chioma Blessing January 2017 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of; Masters of Science in Medicine (Anatomical Sciences) School of Anatomical Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. 2017. / This research studied adult hippocampal neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus of the Long-Evans rat. Eighteen male Long-Evans rats were exposed to complex enriched environment, the running wheel environment for exercise as single influencing factor and the standard laboratory environment for 28 days. Thereafter the rats were transcardially perfused with 0.9 normal saline followed by 4% paraformaldehyde. The brains were removed and frozen sagittal sections cut at 50 μm. Brain sections were stained with Cresyl violet for cytoarchitecture. Immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence techniques were employed for the immature neurons with defined processes using the marker doublecortin (DCX), neuronal proliferation marker Ki-67, the synapse marker, synaptophysin and the dendritic spine marker, synaptobrevin. Giemsa staining was used to identify pyknotic neurons followed by counts for DCX, Ki-67, pyknotic positive cells, and volume density of the dentate gyrus. Results indicated a statistically significant increase in brain weight (p=0.5) for the complex enriched group when compared to the running group and control. The typical cytoarchitecture of the hippocampus in rodents was observed with more densely packed granule cell layer in the dorsal limb of the dentate gyrus compared to the ventral limb especially in the enriched group. The Ki-67 immunopositive cell number between groups showed a variable difference with a three-fold increase each between the standard control and exercise, and between the exercise and enriched but a six-fold increase between the standard control and the complex enriched groups. Comparing the DCX immunopositive results, we observed also that the neuronal numbers, structure, dendritic patterns as well as the neuronal arrangement on the dorsal and ventral limbs of the dentate gyrus varied significantly among groups. The apoptotic cell numberusing pyknotic cells, showed the standard control group to have the highest number of cells compared to the exercise versus the enriched group; noting a five-fold difference between the standard control and exercise, a twenty seven-fold difference between the standard control versus enriched and a twenty one-fold difference between 6 the exercise and complex enriched group. The volumetric analysis showed a 15-fold difference between the standard control and exercise groups, a five-fold difference between the exercise and complex enriched and a nineteen-fold difference between the standard control and complex enriched groups. However, no statistical significant difference was found in the volumetric analysis of the dentate gyrus between the groups. / MT2017

Human or Horse? : Anthropomorphic and Zoomorphic Instances in The Horse Whisperer

Pigney, Emma January 2015 (has links)
This essay aims to show how anthropomorphism, and also to some extent zoomorphism, is created in Nicholas Evans’s novel The Horse Whisperer.  Through parallel events and the usage of the concepts horse whisperers and horse whispering, a special connection is created between Grace, the main human character, and Pilgrim, the main horse character. This essay argues that their connection grounds for the reader to see the horse anthropomorphically and the human to some extent zoomorphically. With the use of Daston and Mitman’s notions of anthropomorphism and zoomorphism, this essay analyses how the concepts manifest themselves in the novel. The definition of horse whisperers and horse whisperering within this essay derives from the work of Brannaman and Parelli, this due to their theoretical value and knowledge about horse whispering.

Avaliação espectrofotométrica de reação inflamatória corneana

Gehlen, Marcelo Luiz 02 January 2013 (has links)
