George eliot's versions of the pastoral

Harker, Mary J. January 1971 (has links)
In an attempt to explain the discrepancy between the intellectual and imaginative elements in George Eliot's art, her version of the pastoral in Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, and Silas Marner is examined. Based on the Warwickshire countryside of her childhood and on the Wordsworthian notion of childhood, her pastoral is the environmental correlative to the spiritual development of a character according to Ludwig Feuerbach's "Religion of Humanity." The pastoral is used to portray man's initial happy state* that is informed by his own egoism and limited viewpoint. The pastoral is also used to portray a kind of second Eden that is inherited by those men who have achieved a wider vision in the "Religion of Humanity." At the same time, the pastoral has certain unconscious associations for George Eliot which produce an imaginative pattern that is different from the one she consciously intends. The appeal of a sense of womb-like enclosedness generated by her pastoral and her apprehension of the world of intellectual and emotional maturity that lies beyond the infantile milieu create an imaginative pattern of psychological regression. The chief character within this pattern (who may also be the chief character within the intentional pattern) finally "dies" in the fatal attempt to remain within the infantile realm. At this low ebb in the imaginative pattern, the new celebrant in the "Religion of Humanity," having achieved an understanding of the not-self, is about to enter his new and shining second Eden. Thus, the enclosed and narrow point of view that corresponds to the initial stage in man's spiritual development is never imaginatively abandoned. Adam Bede is the chief inhabitant of Hayslope which shares his limited and self-centred outlook. The malfeasance of Adam's fiancee, Hetty Sorrel, initiates Adam and Hayslope into new awareness. Finally, Adam returns to an apocalyptic Hayslope with his superior Eve, Dinah Morris. Hetty Sorrel is the focus of the imaginative interest in the novel. Although the child-like Hetty initially seeks to quit the security of the Hall Farm, she later "dies"in the attempt to return. Her "death" and Adam's initiation into the "Religion of Humanity" are almost simultaneous. Through suffering and resignation, Maggie Tulliver learns to imitate Christ according to the precepts of Thomas a Kempis (and Ludwig Feuerbach). Her reward, in death, is a second childhood Eden which is much superior to the first one which was often shaken with egoistic squabbles. Imaginatively, Maggie's resignation takes on the form of a fatal timidity towards life and an inability to quit the infantile relationships within the family circle. She "dies" at the end of a regressive journey into the self at the same point where she receives the cross in recognition of her relationship and duty to others. In Silas Marner, the intellectual and imaginative elements are more closely aligned. Silas "dies" at the conclusion of a regressive journey into the self which also corresponds to his social withdrawl and spiritual death. Similarly, he is reborn and grows into an awareness of a beautiful pastoral world as his vision is widened to include the love and sympathy of fellow human beings. After Silas Marner, George Eliot seldom returned to the pastoral material she developed in the trilogy. Intellectually, her pastoral did not lend itself to a more critical examination of ideas and beliefs while imaginatively, it had become ultimately uncomfortable and unsatisfactory. That she had outgrown her pastoral and that she was unable to replace it with another imaginative system help explain her artistic sterility during the eighteen-sixties. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

Evans Function Computation

Barker, Blake H. 07 July 2009 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, we review the stability problem for traveling waves and discuss the Evans function, an emerging tool in the stability analysis of traveling waves. We describe some recent developments in the numerical computation of the Evans function and discuss STABLAB, an interactive MATLAB based tool box that we developed. In addition, we verify the Evans function for shock layers in Burgers equation and the p-system with and without capillarity, as well as pulses in the generalized Kortweg-de Vries (gKdV) equation. We conduct a new study of parallel shock layers in isentropic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) obtaining results consistent with stability.

Spectral Stability of Weak Detonations in the Majda Model

Hendricks, Jeffrey James 01 July 2013 (has links) (PDF)
Using analytical and numerical Evans-function techniques, we examine the spectral stability of weak-detonation-wave solutions of Majda's scalar model for a reacting gas mixture. We provide a proof of monotonicity of solutions. Using monotonicity we obtain a bound on possible unstable eigenvalues for weak-detonation-wave solutions that improves on the more general bound given by Humpherys, Lyng, and Zumbrun. We use a numerical approximation of the Evans function to search for possible unstable eigenvalues in the bounded region obtained by the energy estimate. For the parameter values tested, our results combined with the result of Lyng, Raoofi, Texier, and Zumbrun demonstrate that these waves are nonlinearly phase-asymptotically orbitally stable throughout the parameter space for which solutions were obtainable.

C–N bond formation using copper complexes

Cope, James 01 May 2020 (has links)
Development of C–N bond formation chemistry is a continuing field of study. Recently copper based Chan-Evans-Lam cross-coupling was discovered, and although our understanding of the mechanism has grown, there are still many unanswered questions to be explored. Herein, we set out to develop a series of copper complexes that can stabilize different oxidation states in an attempt to probe how this impacts the mechanism. Initially complexes of copper(II) with 1,10 phenanthroline (phen) and related ligands were generated for use with CEL coupling. The complexes were probed electrochemically and photophysically and found that the 4,5-diazafluorenone complex 4 had a Cu2+/Cu+ potential +1.1 V relative to phen. We observed that the copper complex 4, which stabilize the Cu+, gave the greatest yield of the desired product. Following this study, we aimed to synthesize novel N-heterocyclic carbene copper complexes, which could better stabilize the copper(II) and copper(III) states. Several ligands and derivatives were synthesized, and copper(II) complexes were made using Cu(OAc)2 as a direct metalation agent. This complex was characterized via several spectroscopic methods and it was found to be a copper(II) complex. Initially this complex was thought to be relatively air stable but it was found to slowly decomposed to a novel di-copper bis-imidazolium complex over the course of 96 hours. While the identity of some of the intermediates are unknown, crystals of a potential end point were grown. A series of preliminary C–N coupling reactions show that the NHC copper(II) complexes are possible catalysts in alcoholic solvents.

Föräldraskap på avdelningen : Föräldrars upplevelser av att delta i vården av sitt barn

Johansson, Viktor, Stål, Andreas January 2014 (has links)
Nyckelord: Delaktighet, föräldrar, Juniarti & Evans, kvalitativ, litteraturstudie, upplevelser. / Background: In 2011, 147 135 inpatient care situations were registered among children. Parents have a crucial role in the care which makes it necessary to acknowledge their needs and wishes about participation. Problem: Recent research shows that nurses put great demands and has high expectations concerning parental participation, which can differ from the actual thoughts of parents. Aim: The aim was to describe parent’s experiences of participation in the hospital care of their children.  Method: Literature review according to Juniarti and Evans descriptive synthesis of recent nursing research. Result: The synthesis gave five themes and nine subthemes: Experiences of parental expertise; Experience of information exchange (Knowing once and others role, Medical information and Continuous dialog concerning the child’s care); Experiences of extents of participation (Freedom of choice, Duties and responsibilities, Exclusion and Constraint); Experiences of performing care (Natural care and Professional care); Experiences of relief. Conclusion: Parents experienced participation as caring, respect for their parentship, acknowledgement about information needs, adjustments of levels of participation and support. The nurse should take this in consideration especially because parents can experience flaws in these areas. Keywords: Experiences, Juniarti & Evans, literature review, parents, participation, qualitative.

In this teaching we investigated the kinetics of vascular and cellular changes in aerocistite induced by inoculation of inactivated Aeromonas hydrophila in Piaractus mesopotamicus and pharmacological effect of the enzymatic activity of phospholipase A2 and cyclooxygenase in acute inflammation. To this end, we used indomethacin, meloxicam and dexamethasone, applied intraparenteral 30 minutes before stimulation harmful. Changes in vascular permeability were evaluated in 30, 90, 120, 180 and 240 minutes post-stimulation, we observed that the maximum plasma exudation occurs with 180 MPE and pretreatment with indomethacin or meloxicam at this time significantly inhibited the increase vascular permeability and dexamethasone had a lock early and effective than other NSAIDs inhibited at 120 and 180MPE. The cellular inflammatory exudate was assessed with six, 24 and 48 hours after stimulation, verifying that the bacteria caused a progressive increase in accumulation of cells, peaking at 24 HPE, higher than the other groups analyzed, and this time all tested drugs were effective in significantly reducing the buildup. The differential count of cells present in the exudate showed a predominance of lymphocytes and thrombocytes, and granulocyte macrophage followed with a later accumulation of the latter. Pretreatment with indomethacin and dexamethasone caused a blockage in the migration of all cells evaluated. The results showed that among the different doses of each drug tested was not observed any significant difference. Analysis of those exposed, suggest that eicosanoids, with in mammals, participate actively in the vascular phenomena and has important role in chemotaxis of leukocytes in acute inflammatory process induced by A. hydrophila in pacu
