Thermal limits for ectothermic animals displays a picture of the range of body temperatures that is tolerable by individuals before their locomotory capacity is impaired. However, thermal limits are not fixed and specific traits, but labile ones subjected to plastic adjustments and evolutionary change, and also are influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors of organisms, as well as by methodological factors inherent to experimental protocols. Even more, the influences of these factors on thermal limits have been commonly addressed independently in different taxa, and the extent by which multiple factors interact and affect thermal limits within taxa is poorly understood. Thus, the main aim of this work was to conduct a methodological assessment of the Critical Thermal Maximum (CTmax) by studying the influences of different experimental heating rates (ΔT’s), ontogeny, body mass, and the interaction among these factors on this trait. This matter was addressed on larvae of Physalaemus nattereri and Hypsiboas pardalis, two anuran species from the São Paulo State, southeastern Brazil, that differ in their phylogenetic background, ecological and life-history characteristics and inhabit environments with different thermal regimes. First, ΔT’s did affect averages and variances of CTmax in a species-specific manner. In addition, it was found a ΔT-dependent decreasing in CTmax at the end of metamorphosis in tadpoles of P. nattereri, because only the metamorphosing tadpoles exposed to the acute ΔT were more sensitive to high temperature than premetamorphic tadpoles. Finally, body mass and ΔT’s interacted on the CTmax of both species along our experimental design. In P. nattereri, body mass affected CTmax through physiology at the slow ΔT’s, whereas in H. pardalis body mass affected CTmax at the acute ΔT through a methodological artifact driven by higher thermal inertia in the group of large tadpoles. This study revealed that ΔT’s, ontogeny and body mass interact on the CTmax of our studied species, and these interactive effects could not have been elucidated by the independent study of each factor. It also highlights the importance of integrating the factors that influence thermal limits of ectothermic animals, especially in the context of climate change / Os limites térmicos para animais ectotérmicos mostram uma imagem do intervalo de temperaturas corporais que é tolerável pelos indivíduos antes de sua capacidade locomotora ser prejudicada. Primeiro, foi encontrado que as ΔT’s afetaram tanto os valores médios quanto as variâncias da CTmax em ambas as espécies de maneira específica. Este estudo revelou que as ΔT’s, a ontogenia e a massa corpórea interagem sobre a CTmax das espécies estudadas, e estes efeitos interativos não poderiam ter sido elucidados pelo estudo independente de cada fator. Também é salientada a importância de integrar os fatores que influenciam os limites térmicos dos animais ectotérmicos, especialmente no contexto das mudanças climáticas

Designing an Experimental Protocol for Separating Active Diameter Response from Passive Response in Small Blood Vessels / Utveckling av ett experiment som separerar den aktiva och passiva diameter responsen hos små blodkärl

The knowledge of blood vessel biomechanics is used for understanding and developing treatments for cardiovascular disease. The objective of this project was to develop an experimental protocol, for education and research, that separates active diameter response from the passive, as a function of the intraluminal pressure in a pressure myograph. The design process was performed in three steps. First the protocol was designed for an artificial vessel and then expanded to include passive properties of blood vessels, finally further developments needed to analyze active blood vessels were suggested. The system was built as a pressure myograph containing a vessel chamber where the vessel was mounted on two cannulas, two pressure sensors for calculating the intraluminal pressure, and one microscope equipped with a camera for diameter observations. Reference data for the artificial vessel material was acquired from a uniaxial tensile test. The results was in the form of stress-stretch relations. Both the results from the artificial vessel and the passive blood vessel was in a acceptable reference range. The results indicate that the experimental protocol can be used for testing passive properties of both artificial vessels and small blood vessels. No results were obtained for active blood vessels, thus the experimental protocol can not be used for separating the active response to diameter change of blood vessels. However, further developments of the experimental protocol are discussed. / Kunskap om blodkärlens biomekanik används för att förstå och utveckla behandlingsmetoder mot hjärt- och kärlsjukdomar. Syftet med det här projektet var att utveckla ett experiment som mäter små blodkärls diameter och vätsketryck in vitro. Experimentet skulle sedan separera det aktiva muskelbidraget till diameterförändring från det passiva bidraget. Genom att göra detta kan kunskapen om biomekaniken hos blodkärl utvecklas inom såväl forskning som utbildning. Experimentet utvecklades i tre steg. Först utvecklades det för artificiella blodkärl och anpassades sedan för passiva blodkärl. Slutligen diskuteras vidareutvecklingar av experimentet gällande de aktiva egenskaperna för blodkärl. Experimentet utformades genom att ett kärl placerades i en kammare. Blodkärlet fästes i vardera ände på varsin kanyl som var kopplade till trycksensorer. För att registrera diametern placerades kammaren under ett kameramikroskop. Resultatet består av spänning-sträcknings diagram. Både resultatet för det artificiella blodkärlet och det passiva blodkärlet var inom ett godkänt referensintervall. Dessa resultat stödjer antagandet att experimentet kan användas för att studera passiva egenskaper av artificiella och verkliga blodkärl med storlek mellan 1.9-4.4 mm i ytterdiameter. Ingen mätdata från aktiva blodkärl kunde samlas in, utan utvecklingskrav på systemet för hantering av aktiva blodkärl har föreslagits.

Influence de la température sur la thixotropie des bétons autoplaçants / The influence of the temperature on the thixotropy of self-consolidating concretes

L’objectif de cette thèse est d’étudier l’influence de la température sur la thixotropie des bétons autoplaçants (BAP). L’intérêt de ce travail s’inscrit dans la perspective d’optimiser les formulations des BAP dans une large gamme de température. Un plan factoriel composite centré a été adopté dans le but de minimiser le nombre d’essais tout en étudiant les effets des facteurs (température et dosage en agent de viscosité (AV)) et leurs interactions sur les propriétés rhéologiques des BAP.La première phase de l’étude consistait à quantifier la thixotropie du béton juste après le malaxage et durant la période dormante en fonction du dosage en AV à des températures comprises entre 11.3 et 30.7°C selon le protocole proposé par Wallevik sur le rhéomètre BML4. Les résultats ont montré que l’indice de thixotropie présente un minimum respectivement pour un dosage en AV de 0.28 % (par rapport à la masse d’eau) et une température de 24°C. Cependant, ce protocole ne permet pas d’étudier la déstructuration des BAP, facteur recherché par exemple dans les coulages multicouches. Nous avons donc été amenés à retenir un protocole utilisé dans les gels et appelé protocole Dolz. L’application de ce dernier aux pâtes de ciment et aux BAP a permis de mettre en évidence une nouvelle grandeur, le potentiel de déstructuration K. Les valeurs du potentiel K montrent qu’au delà d’un certain dosage en AV et d’une certaine température, apparaissent des phénomènes d’encombrement qui réduisent le potentiel K. Ainsi, le potentiel K apporte des informations complémentaires pour l’aide à la sélection de dosages adéquats du couple superplastifiant – agent de viscosité en fonction de la température de coulage. / The aim of this thesis was to study the influence of the temperature on the thixotropy of self-consolidating concrete (SCC). The research significance comes within the perspective to optimize the design of SCC in a wide range temperature. A factorial composite experimental plan was carried out in order to minimize the total number of tests while studying the effects of factors (temperature and dosage of viscosity modifying admixture (VMA)) and their interactions on the rheological properties of SCC. The first phase of the study was to quantify the thixotropy of concrete proportioned with various dosage of VMA at different temperatures ranging from 11.3 to 30.7°C just after mixing and at different time during the dormant period using the protocol proposed by Wallevik in BML4 rheometer. The results indicated that the values of thixotropy index present a minimum respectively with a VMA dosage of 0.28 % (by mass of water) and a temperature of 24°C.On the other hand, this protocol does not allow studying the destructuration of SCC, useful factor needed for example in the multi-layer casting. We therefore had to retain a protocol used in gels and called Dolz protocol. The application of this last to cement pastes and SCC has revealed a new grandeur, the potential of destructuration K. The values of K show that beyond a certain dosage in VMA and a certain temperature, the congestion phenomena appear that reduce the potential K. In this case, the potential of destructuration provides complementary information to assist in the selection of appropriate dosages of couple superlasticizer-VMA whatever the casting temperature may be.

Détection de ruptures de signaux physiologiques en situation in vivo via la méthode FDpV : cas de la fréquence cardiaque et de l'activité électrodermale de marathoniens / Change point detection of physiological signals within in vivo settings via the FDpV method : case of the heart rate and the electrodermal activity of marathoners

Cette thèse a été réalisée dans un cadre pluridisciplinaire alliant protocole expérimental, instrumentation dans des conditions de mesures in vivo, détection de ruptures associées à des changements d'états physiologiques et identification et prétraitement d'artefacts de mesures chez des coureurs de marathons. Nous avons considéré l'analyse de la variabilité du rythme cardiaque (VRC) et l'analyse de l'activité électrodermale (AED) pendant une course et lors des phases qui la précèdent et la suivent. La détection de ruptures de moyenne et de tendance est effectuée par la méthode Filtered Derivative with p-Value (FDpV) tout au long de cette thèse. La méthode FDpV est basée sur une analyse dynamique faisant appel à un modèle stationnaire par morceaux. Elle a permis en particulier d'introduire un indice de régulation cardiaque pour les coureurs. Un suivi des changements des états d'éveil et de motivation à travers l'AED par la détection de ruptures de la tendance pendant la course d'un semi-marathonien est également proposée. Ceci a permis de définir des signatures de début et de fin de course. Une attention particulière a été apportée à la composante tonique de l'AED reflétant le niveau d'activation affectif. Nous avons comparé trois méthodes d'extraction du niveau tonique en tenant compte des artefacts potentiels présents. Ce travail concerne des études de cas; il peut être étendu à une cohorte et englober plus de paramètres physiologiques (VO2, EEG,...). Ainsi, une classification des états d'éveil et de motivation peut être envisagée et représente des éléments significatifs de caractérisation des données physiologiques in vivo pour l'optimisation des performances sportives. / This thesis was carried out in a multidisciplinary approach that combines experimental protocol, instrumentation, in vivo measurements, physiological change detection instants and identification and preprocessing of measurement artefacts for marathon runners. We considered the analysis of the heart rate variability (HRV) and the electrodermal activity (EDA) recorded during a semi-marathon including pre and post competition periods. A study of the HRV and EDA change detection was carried based on the mean and the trend using the Filtered Derivative with pValue method (FDpV) throughout this thesis. This segmentation method is based on a dynamical approach using a piece-wise stationary model. As a result, itallowed to introduce an index of cardiac regulation for semi-marathon runners. Physiological state changes tracking of affective dimension i.e. "stress" and motivation via the EDA by change detection on its tonic component which reflects the EDA general trend throughout a semi-marathon was also proposed. This enabled us to characterize start and finish phases of a race which are key elements in any competition. A special attention was given to the tonic component of the EDA reflecting the overall level of affective activation. We compared three methods of tonic level extraction by taking into account the present potential artefacts. Thiswork focused on case studies; It can be generalized over a cohort and include more physiological parameters such that VO2 or EEG. Hence, a classification of stress states may also be considered and represent other significant features for characterizing in vivo physiological data for sport performance optimization.

Influence de la fissuration sur le transfert de fluides dans les structures en béton : stratégies de modélisation probabiliste et étude expérimentale / Fluid transfers in cracking concrete structures : numerical probabilistic modeling strategies and experimental investigations

Une structure en béton doit assurer des fonctions structurales qui vont au delà de la simple résistance. Dans ce cadre, la fissuration du béton armé joue un rôle primordial sur la durabilité, l'étanchéité et même la sûreté des structures. La structure poreuse du béton rend naturellement possible la pénétration au cours du temps d'espèces délétères. En outre, sous l'effet des chargements mécaniques et des conditions environnementales au sens large, le béton se fissure. Les fissures constituent, elles aussi, des voies préférentielles pour la pénétration de fluides ou d'agents agressifs et ajoutent de manière significative leur contribution à la dégradation des performances structurelles. Dans la thèse une stratégie de modélisation macroscopique probabiliste du couplage entre fissuration et transferts de fluides dans les structures en béton est présentée. Le béton est modélisé comme un milieu poreux saturé d'eau tandis que la fissuration (mécanique) est modélisée au travers d'une approche numérique probabiliste tenant compte de l'hétérogénéité naturelle du matériau et des effets d'échelle qu'elle induit. L'hypothèse physique de base du modèle de fissuration est que chaque élément fini peut être considéré comme représentatif d'un volume de matière hétérogène dont le comportement est géré par son degré d'hétérogénéité, défini comme le rapport entre le volume élémentaire et un volume représentatif de l'hétérogénéité du matériau. Dans la formulation développée, les propriétés mécaniques du matériau sont considérées comme des variables aléatoires (non corrélés) distribuées dans les éléments du maillage selon des distributions statistiques validées expérimentalement. Une approche par analyse inverse permet d'accéder aux paramètres de fonctions de distribution qui, selon les hypothèses du modèle, varient en fonction de la dimension des éléments finis. Le couplage fissuration-transfert est traité de manière faible, sous l'hypothèse d'absence d'interaction entre les deux processus (à savoir que la fissuration de l'élément fini, d'origine mécanique, induit une variation locale de sa perméabilité). L'utilisation d'une loi de Poiseuille modifiée et adaptée expérimentalement selon un protocole développé dans le cadre de la thèse permet de mettre en relation une telle variation avec l'ouverture de fissure et de prendre en compte, de manière macroscopique, les principales causes d'écart entre l'écoulement idéalisé, représenté par la loi de Pouiselle, et l'écoulement dans des fissures réelles. Une approche de type Monte-Carlo permet de valider les résultats des simulations mécaniques et hydriques. Les capacités de la stratégie de modélisation proposée en termes de prédiction des débits d'eau en milieu fissuré sont explorées au travers de la simulation d'essais de perméabilité sous charge sur des éprouvettes cylindriques soumises à du fendage. Ces essais sont utilisés dans le cadre du protocole expérimentale. Une première validation à l'échelle d'un élément structurel multifissuré est presentée. Elle consiste en la simulation d'un essai (récemment proposé dans la littérature) developpé pour l'étude de l'impact de la fissuration sur les propriétés de transfert de tirants en béton armé / Concrete durability is strongly affected by the flow of fluids, gas and pollutants in its porous matrix. The presence of cracks weakens the resistance of concrete porous matrix and constitutes preferential flow paths for aggressive components. In the thesis, a probabilistic numerical modeling strategy for modeling fluids transfers in cracked concrete structures is presented. The concrete is modeled in the framework of water saturated porous media. Its (mechanical) cracking is modeled by means of a macroscopic probabilistic approach, explicitly taking into account material heterogeneity as well as size effects. The main assumption of the model, developed in the frame of the the Finite Element Method, is to consider a finite element volume as a volume of heterogeneous material and to assume that physical mechanisms influencing the cracking processes remain the same whatever the scale of observation. At the scale of the finite element, mechanical properties are then functions of its own volume. To describe the heterogeneity of the material, these mechanical properties are consider as uncorrelated random variables distributed over the finite element mesh. Characteristics of statistical distribution laws are directly depending on the degree of heterogeneity of the finite element (the ratio between its volume and the volume of the coarsest aggregate) and of the quality of the cement paste. An inverse analysis approach allows to find their parameters as functions of the elementary volume. A weak coupling between cracking and fluid transfers is considered, under the assumption of no interaction between the two processes (i.e. the mechanically produced cracking of a finite element induce a local variation of its permeability tensor). An experimentally adapted Pouiseuille law, based on an original experimental protocol, allows to relate this permeability variation to the crack aperture and to macroscopically take into account the influence of crack roughness, aperture variation and tortuosity. A Monte-Carlo like approach is used in order to statistically validate mechanical and hydraulic simulations. The coupling strategy is validated in two phases, both at the scale of a laboratory specimen and at the scale of a multi-cracked structural element

L’étudiant non natif face au cours magistral : une démarche expérimentale / The non-native student face up to lectures in law : an experimental approach.

L’étude dont nous présentons ici les résultats a pour objet l’étudiant non natif confronté au cours magistral. Cette étude s’intègre dans l’axe II de la section Adis-langues du laboratoire ICAR II. L’étude s’appuie sur l’hypothèse que la complexité du fonctionnement du cours magistral entraîne des difficultés de compréhension orale et de prise de notes chez les étudiants non natifs qui ont une maîtrise incertaine de la langue française.Nous avons travaillé sur des extraits d’enregistrements vidéo de cours de droit que nous avons analysé en nous inspirant des présupposées théoriques de l’école française de l’analyse du discours. Plusieurs autres concepts ont servi d’outils pour appréhender le fonctionnement du cours magistral. Nous avons notamment été longuement éclairée par les études menées au sein du groupe Interactions et Apprentissage des langues dans sa composante Analyses de discours didactiques et nous nous sommes servie de leur modèle pour identifier et étiqueter les différents paramètres de complexité du cours magistral. Pour mesurer la compréhension orale de ces paramètres, nous avons adopté une démarche expérimentale pas aussi sophistiquée que l’exige la méthode expérimentale proprement dite, pour des raisons heuristiques. Nous avons proposé aux étudiants natifs et non natifs des tests de compréhension orale à travers la prise de notes et d’autres questions orales et écrites.Les résultats obtenus révèlent des cas de maîtrise de la langue et des moments plus délicats où pour des raisons diverses la compréhension orale et la prise de notes sont rendues difficiles. Ces résultats ont permis de valider l’hypothèse de départ. Nous avons à partir de là ébauché un dispositif compensatoire des problèmes identifiés, puis nous avons formulé des perspectives pour des études plus approfondies à l’avenir. / The study we present here the results has for object the non-native student face up to oral comprehension and taking notes challenges during lectures in law. This study is part of the axis II section of Adis-language laboratory ICAR II. The study is based on the assumption that the complexity of the functioning or of lectures in law leads to difficulties in listening and note-taking in non-native students who have an uncertain command of French. The data from which we have worked consist of excerpts from videotapes of law courses. We analyzed these recordings according to theoretical presuppositions of the French school of discourse analysis. Several other concepts developed by other schools and other researchers have been used tools for understanding the functioning of the lectures. We were also informed by extensive studies on the lectures conducted in the group Interactions and Language Learning in its component Analysis of didactic speeches.We used the model of listening to lectures theorized by this research group to define the term listening. This model allowed us to identify and label the different complexity parameters of lectures. To measure oral comprehension of these parameters, we adopted an experimental approach. We have developed an experimental design not as sophisticated as required by the experimental method itself, for heuristic reasons. The experimental protocol is based on a set of excerpts of recordings from which we offered to native students and nonnative students listening tests through taking notes and other written and oral questions. The results reveal cases of language proficiency and delicate moments where for various reasons, listening and taking notes are complicated. These results validate the starting hypothesis. We have sketched from here a compensatory mechanism of identified problems, and then we have made perspective for further studies in the future.

Finite size scaling and the critical Casimir force : Ising magnets and binary fluids / Finite size scaling et force de Casimir critique : aimants d'Ising et fluides binaires

À l'approche d'un point critique, la divergence de la longueur de corrélation des fluctuations peut être tronquée par le confinement du système. Cette troncature engendre des effets de taille finie présentant des caractères universels au sein d'un classe de transitions de phases.Nous nous sommes intéressés particulièrement à la classe d'universalité du modèle d'Ising, regroupant notamment les transitions de phase ferro/paramagnétique pour les systèmes magnétiques uniaxiaux, la transition liquide/gaz et encore la démixtion de mélanges binaires. Nous présentons tout d'abord une introduction aux phénomènes critiques, à l'universalité, au « finite-size scaling » et aux simulations Monte Carlo du modèle d'Ising, sur lesquelles se fondent la majeur partie de ce travail.Un effet de taille finie ayant attiré une grande attention durant les dernières dizaines d'années est la force de Casimir critique. Les travaux théoriques et numériques concernant cette force ont, dans leur quasi totalité, été menés dans des systèmes magnétiques modèles, tel que les modèles d'Ising ou XY. Par contre, les approches expérimentales ont toutes été réalisées dans des systèmes fluides, tels que des mélanges binaires ou de l'hélium IV proche de la transition superfluide.Une motivation de ce travail a été de chercher a résoudre cette situation paradoxale en proposant, d'une part, un protocole expérimental pour la mesure de la force de Casimir dans une couche mince magnétique et, d'autre part, une approche numérique dans un mélange binaire de type Lennard-Jones. Cette dernière approche présente l'avantage d'ouvrir la porte à des études des fluctuations de la force de Casimir ou encore hors-équilibre. / Approaching a critical point, the divergence of the correlation length of fluctuations can be cut-off by a confinement of the system. This truncation fosters finite size effects with universal features in a class of continuous phase transitions. We are particularly interested in the Ising universality class, regrouping transitions such as the ferromagnetic/paramagnetic transition for uniaxial magnetic systems, the liquid/gas tran- sition and the demixing of binary mixtures. We will first present an introduction to critical phenomena, universality, finite-size scaling and Monte Carlo simulations of the Ising model, on which a major part of this work relies.A finite size effect that has particularly drawn attention in the past decades is the critical Casimir force. On the one hand, theoretical and numerical works on the subject have almost systematically been performed in magnetic model systems, such as the Ising or XY models. On the other hand, experimental approaches were all realized in fluid systems, such as binary mixtures or helium IV close to the superfluid transition.A motivation of this work was to bridge this gap by proposing, firstly, an experimental protocol for measuring the critical Casimir force in a magnetic layer and, secondly, a numerical approach in a Lennard-Jones binary mixture. The latter is of particular interest as it could lead the way to studying fluctuations of the Casimir force or out-of-equilibrium phenomena.
