Les mouvements oculaires et le contrôle postural chez l'enfant strabique / Eye movements and postural control in strabismic childrenLions, Cynthia 06 October 2014 (has links)
Environ, 2% des enfants de moins de 7 ans sont porteurs d'un strabisme (Williams et al., 2008) entraînant une perturbation de leur système visuel. Dans un premier temps, nous allons étudier les mouvements oculaires pendant la lecture d'un texte et pendant la poursuite d'une cible chez des enfants strabiques et de comparer ces résultats à des enfants non strabiques du même âge. Dans un second temps, nous avons étudié l'équilibre postural en condition de simple et de double tâche, puis nous avons examiné le rôle des informations proprioceptives sur le contrôle postural chez ces enfants. Nous émettons l'hypothèse selon laquelle le déficit visuel des enfants strabiques est à l'origine d'un retard ou d'un mauvais traitement cognitif de l'information visuelle ainsi qu'à l'origine d'un développement moteur modifiés s'appuyant sur d'autres systèmes sensoriels pour compenser leur déficit visuel. Quatre études publiées dans des revues internationales ont été réalisés pour tester ces hypothèses. L'ensemble de ces travaux a été réalisé afin d'apporter une meilleure compréhension des mécanismes et des interactions entre oculomotricité et contrôle postural chez les enfants strabiques. Ceci permet d'apporter des éléments fondés à l'aide au diagnostic, à la prise en charge rééducative mais aussi chirurgical de ces enfants strabiques. / Approximately 2% of children under 7 years old suffer strabismus (Williams et al., 2008), leading to a deficit in their visuel system. Firstly, we studied eye movements during reading and during smooth pursuit in strabismic children and compared these results to non strabismic age-matched children. Secondly, we studied postural control in both simple and double task, and the role of proprioceptive information on postural control in these children. We hypothesize that visual deficit in strabismic children delayed cognitive processing of visual information, and modified motor development by using other sensory systems to compensate their visual deficit. Four peer reviews were conducted to confirm these assumptions. Taken together, these studies provide a better understanding about mechanisms and interactions between oculomotricity and postural control in strabismic children. These findings allow to bring evidence for improve the diagnosis, rehabilitation treatment and also surgical treatment of strabismic children.

La dyslexie développementale est un trouble neuro-développemental qui affecte spécifiquement l’apprentissage du langage écrit d’environ 10% des enfants en âge scolaire. Ces dernières années, plusieurs études ont montré la présence des anomalies oculomotrices chez les enfants dyslexiques. Toutefois, plusieurs questions sur la performance oculomotrice des enfants dyslexiques sont encore sans réponse ou restent peu étudiées.Dans cette thèse, nous avons réalisé trois études afin d’examiner l’oculomotricité des enfants dyslexiques comparativement à celle des enfants non-dyslexiques. Pour la première fois, nous avons enregistré les saccades verticales chez les enfants dyslexiques (étude 1). Les résultats ont montré que, comparés aux enfants non-dyslexiques de même âge chronologique, les enfants dyslexiques avaient des latences plus longues, de faibles précisions et des vitesses saccadiques ayant une asymétrie haut/bas. Les études 2 et 3 nous ont permis d’élargir les investigations, respectivement, sur la fixation visuelle et sur la reconnaissance visuo-auditive phonologique chez les enfants dyslexiques. Nous avons reporté une fixation visuelle et une reconnaissance visuo-auditive phonologique de faible qualité chez les enfants dyslexiques par rapport aux groupes d’enfants-non dyslexiques de même âge chronologique et de même âge de lecture.Nous avons suggéré que le développement atypique du système visuel magnocellulaire, de même que celui des structures cortico-sous-corticales et des difficultés attentionnelles expliqueraient les perturbations oculomotrices des enfants dyslexiques. Ainsi, nous avons proposé des voies de rééducation oculomotrice en vue de contribuer à l’amélioration des capacités de lecture des enfants dyslexiques.Mots-clés: Mouvements oculaires, saccades, fixations, système visuel, cortex visuel, structures cortico-sous-corticales, attention, dyslexie développementale. / ABSTRACTDevelopmental dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects written language learning of about 10% of school-age children. During the last years, several studies have shown the presence of oculomotor abnormalities in dyslexia. However, several questions about the oculomotor performance of dyslexic children are still unanswered.We conducted three studies to examine eye movements of dyslexic children with respect to non-dyslexic age-matched children. In the first of our study, we investigated vertical saccades performance in dyslexic children. The results showed that, dyslexic children had longer latencies, poor precision and slow saccadic speed with up / down asymmetry. Studies 2 and 3 respectively allowed us to enlarge the investigation of visual fixation as well as visual-auditory phonological capabilities in dyslexic children. We reported a low quality of visual fixation and visual-auditory phonological recognition in children with dyslexia compared with the non-dyslexic children.Taken together, all these findings suggested, in dyslexic children, an immaturity of the magnocellular visual system, as well as of the cortico-subcortical structures responsible for oculomotor performances. Attentional capabilities, that are poor in dyslexic children, would be also explained their oculomotor deficiencies reported. Thus, we proposed oculomotor rehabilitation that could be able to improve reading skills in dyslexia.Key words: Eye movements, saccades, fixations, visual system, visual cortex, cortical and sub-cortical structures, attention, developmental dyslexia.

Eye Movements, Memory, and Thinking: Tracking Eye Movements to Reveal Memory Processes during Reasoningand Decision-MakingScholz, Agnes 11 May 2015 (has links)
This thesis investigates the relationship between eye movements, memory and thinking in five studies based on eye tracking experiments. The studies draw on the human ability to spatially index multimodal events as demonstrated by people’s gaze reverting back to emptied spatial locations when retrieving information that was associated with this location during a preceding encoding phase – the so called “looking-at-nothing” phenomenon. The first part of this thesis aimed at gaining a better understanding of the relationship between eye movements and memory in relation to verbal information. The second part of this thesis investigated what could be learned about the memory processes involved in reasoning and decision-making by studying eye movements to blank spaces.
The first study presented in this thesis clarified the role of eye movements for the retrieval of verbal information from memory. More precisely, it questioned if eye movements to nothing are functionally related to memory retrieval for verbal information, i.e. auditorily presented linguistic information. Eye movements were analyzed following correct and incorrect retrievals of previously presented auditory statements concerning artificial places that were probed during a subsequent retrieval phase. Additionally, eye movements were manipulated as the independent variable with the aid of a spatial cue that either guided the eyes towards or away from associated spatial locations. Using verbal materials elicited eye movements to associated but emptied spatial locations, thereby replicating previous findings on eye movements to nothing. This behaviour was more pronounced for correct in comparison to incorrect retrievals. Retrieval performance was higher when the eyes were guided towards in comparison to being guided away from associated spatial locations. In sum, eye movements play a functional role for the retrieval of verbal materials.
The second study tested if the looking-at-nothing behaviour can also diminish; for example, does its effect diminish if people gain enough practice in a retrieval task? The same paradigm was employed as in the first study. Participants listened to four different sentences. Each sentence was associated with one of four areas on the screen and was presented 12 times. After every presentation, participants heard a statement probing one sentence, while the computer screen remained blank. More fixations were found to be located in areas associated with the probed sentence than in other locations. Moreover, the more trials participants completed, the less frequently they exhibited the looking-at-nothing behaviour. Looking-at-nothing behaviour can in this way be seen to indeed diminish when knowledge becomes strongly represented in memory.
In the third and fourth study eye movements were utilized as a tool to investigate memory search during rule- versus similarity-based decision-making. In both studies participants first memorized multiple pieces of information relating to job candidates (exemplars). In subsequent test trials they judged the suitability of new candidates that varied in their similarity to the previously learned exemplars. Results showed that when using similarity, but not when using a rule, participants fixated longer on the previous location of exemplars that were similar to the new candidates than on the location of dissimilar exemplars. This suggests that people using similarity retrieve previously learned exemplars, whereas people using a rule do not.
Eye movements were used yet again as a tool in the fifth study. On this occasion, eye movements were investigated during memory-based diagnostic reasoning. The study tested the effects of symptom order and diversity with symptom sequences that supported two or three contending hypotheses, and which were ambiguous throughout the symptom sequence. Participants first learned information about causes and symptoms presented in spatial frames. Gaze allocation on emptied spatial frames during symptom processing and during the diagnostic response reflected the subjective status of hypotheses held in memory and the preferred interpretation of ambiguous symptoms. Gaze data showed how the diagnostic decision develops and revealed instances of hypothesis change and biases in symptom processing.
The results of this thesis demonstrate in very different scenarios the tight interplay between eye movements, memory and thinking. They show that eye movements are not automatically directed to spatial locations. Instead, they reflect the dynamic updating of internal, multimodal memory representations. Eye movements can be used as a direct behavioural correlate of memory processes involved in similarity- versus rule-based decision-making, and they reveal rich time-course information about the process of diagnostic reasoning. The results of this thesis are discussed in light of the current theoretical debates on cognitive processes that guide eye movements, memory and thinking. This thesis concludes by outlining a list of recommendations for using eye movements to investigate thinking processes, an outlook for future research and possible applications for the research findings. / Diese Dissertation beschäftigt sich mit der Interaktion von Blickbewegungen, Gedächtnis- und Denkprozessen. In fünf experimentellen Untersuchungen, die auf der Messung von Blickbewegungen beruhen, wurde die menschliche Fähigkeit zum räumlichen Indizieren multimodaler Ereignisse untersucht. Diese Fähigkeit manifestiert sich u.a. im sogenannten „Looking-at-nothing“ Phänomen, das beschreibt, dass Menschen beim Abruf von Informationen aus dem Gedächtnis an Orte zurückblicken, die in einer vorhergehenden Enkodierphase mit den abzurufenden Informationen assoziiert wurden, selbst wenn diese räumlichen Positionen keinerlei erinnerungsrelevante Informationen mehr enthalten.
In der ersten Untersuchung wurde der Frage nachgegangen, ob Blickbewegungen an geleerte räumliche Positionen den Abruf von Informationen aus dem Gedächtnis erleichtern. Während ein solches Verhalten für den Abruf zuvor visuell dargebotener Informationen bereits gezeigt werden konnte, ist die Befundlage für die Erinnerungsleistung bei auditiv dargebotenen, linguistischen Informationen unklar. Um diesen Zusammenhang zu untersuchen, wurde das Blickverhalten zunächst als Folge von richtigen und falschen Antworten untersucht. In einem weiteren Schritt wurde das Blickverhalten experimentell manipuliert. Dies geschah mit Hilfe eines räumlichen Hinweisreizes, der die Blicke entweder hin zu der Position leitete, die mit dem abzurufenden Stimulus assoziiert war, oder weg von dieser Position. Die Ergebnisse dieser Untersuchung konnten bisherige Befunde zum Looking-at-nothing Verhalten replizieren. Zudem zeigte sich, dass beim korrekten Abruf von Informationen aus dem Gedächtnis vermehrt Looking-at-nothing gezeigt wurde, während das bei fehlerhaften Abrufen nicht der Fall war. Die Blickmanipulation ergab, dass die Gedächtnisleistung besser war, wenn der Hinweisreiz den Blick hin zur assoziierten räumlichen Position leitete. Im Gegensatz dazu war die Erinnerungsleistung schlechter, wenn der Blick von der assoziierten räumlichen Position weggeleitet wurde. Blickbewegungen an geleerte räumliche Positionen scheinen demnach auch den Abruf verbaler Stimuli zu erleichtern.
In der zweiten Untersuchung wurde erforscht, ob das Looking-at-nothing Verhalten nachlässt, wenn das experimentelle Material stark gelernt, d.h. stark im Gedächtnis repräsentiert ist. Dazu wurde das gleiche experimentelle Paradigma, wie in der ersten Untersuchung verwendet. Vier verschiedene Sätze wurden während der Enkodierphase mit vier verschiedenen räumlichen Positionen assoziiert. Nach jeder Präsentation aller vier Sätze, wurde einer der Sätze getestet. Diese Prozedur wiederholte sich in zwölf Durchgängen. In den ersten vier Durchgängen sahen die Versuchspersonen beim Abruf häufiger in das Feld, dass mit der getesteten Information assoziiert war, d.h. sie zeigten wie erwartet das Looking-at-nothing Verhalten. Je mehr Durchgänge die Versuchspersonen bearbeiteten, desto seltener blickten sie zu der assoziierten räumlichen Position. Demnach verschwindet das Looking-at-nothing Verhalten, wenn Informationen stark im Gedächtnis repräsentiert sind.
In der dritten und vierten Untersuchung wurden Blickbewegungen an geleerte räumliche Positionen als Methode verwendet um Denkprozesse zu untersuchen. In der dritten Untersuchung lernten Versuchsteilnehmer zunächst Informationen über fiktive Bewerber (Exemplare) für eine freie Position in einem Unternehmen. Jedes Exemplar wurde mit seinen Eigenschaften während der Lernphase mit einer distinkten räumlichen Position verknüpft. In einer nachfolgenden Entscheidungsphase beurteilten die Versuchsteilnehmer neue Bewerber. Diese neuen Bewerber variierten in ihrer Ähnlichkeit mit den zuvor gelernten Bewerbern. Versuchsteilnehmer die eine ähnlichkeitsbasierte Entscheidungsstrategie verwendeten, sahen an die geleerten räumlichen Positionen zurück, die in der Lernphase mit den Exemplaren verknüpft wurden. Wendeten sie jedoch eine abstrakte Regel an, um die neuen Bewerber zu beurteilten, so zeigten sie kein Looking-at-nothing Verhalten. Dieses Ergebnis lässt darauf schließen, dass eine ähnlichkeitsbasierte im Gegensatz zu einer regelbasierten Strategie den Abruf zuvor gelernter Exemplare bewirkt.
Auch in der fünften Untersuchung wurden Blickbewegungen als Methode eingesetzt, diesmal zur Untersuchung gedächtnisbasierter Schlussfolgerungsprozesse, wie sie beim Finden von Erklärungen für eine Anzahl gegebener Informationen auftreten. Manipuliert wurden die Reihenfolge der präsentierten Informationen und die Diversität der möglichen Erklärungen. Die getesteten Symptomsequenzen unterstützen stets mindestens zwei mögliche Erklärungen. Die Versuchsteilnehmer lernten in einer vorangestellten Lernphase die Symptome und ihre möglichen Erklärungen. Symptome und Erklärungen wurden mit räumlichen Positionen verknüpft. In einer anschließenden Diagnosephase wurden verschiedene Symptomsequenzen getestet. Das Blickverhalten während der Diagnosephase reflektierte die Interpretation der Symptome im Sinne der subjektiv wahrscheinlichsten Erklärung. Die Aufzeichnung und Analyse der Blickbewegungen erlaubte es die Entwicklung dieser Interpretation über die gesamte Sequenz hinweg zu beobachten und Hypothesenwechsel lokalisieren zu können.
Insgesamt stützen die Ergebnisse dieser Dissertation die Annahme einer engen funktionalen Verbindung von Blickbewegungen, Gedächtnis- und Denkprozessen. Sie zeigen, dass Blickbewegungen nicht automatisch an alle assoziierten räumlichen Positionen gerichtet werden, sondern dass sie vielmehr den situations- und aufgabenabhängigen Abruf von Informationen aus dem Gedächtnis widerspiegeln. Blickbewegungen können als direktes Verhaltensmaß zur Messung von Gedächtnisprozessen beim ähnlichkeitsbasierten Entscheiden herangezogen werden und liefern wertvolle Prozessdaten über die Integration von Symptominformationen beim diagnostischen Schließen. Die Ergebnisse dieser Dissertation werden im Lichte der aktuellen theoretischen Diskussion über kognitive Prozesse beim Bewegen der Augen, beim Gedächtnisabruf und beim komplexen Denken betrachtet. Abschließend werden Empfehlungen für die Verwendung der Methode der Blickbewegungsmessung als Prozessmaß zur Untersuchung gedächtnisbasierter Denkprozesse gegeben, ein Überblick über zukünftige Forschungsmöglichkeiten präsentiert und Ideen für Anwendungsmöglichkeiten der präsentierten Befunde aufgezeigt.

Visual multistability: influencing factors and analogies to auditory streamingWegner, Thomas 03 May 2023 (has links)
Sensory inputs can be ambiguous. A physically constant stimulus that induces several perceptual alternatives is called multistable. Many factors can influence perception. In this thesis I investigate factors that affect visual multistability. All presented studies use a pattern-component rivalry stimulus consisting of two gratings drifting in opposite directions (called the plaid stimulus). This induces an “integrated” perception of a moving plaid (the pattern) or a “segregated” perception of overlaid gratings (the components). One study (chapter 2) investigates parameter dependence of a plaid stimulus on perception, with particular emphasis on the first percept. Specifically, it addresses how the enclosed angle (opening angle) affects the perception at stimulus onset and during prolonged viewing. The effects that are shown persist even if the stimulus is rotated. On a more abstract level it is shown that percepts can influence each other over time (chapter 3) which emphasizes the importance of instructions and report mode. In particular, it relates to the decision which percepts are instructed to be reported at all as well as which percepts can be reported as separate entities and which are pooled into the same response option. A further abstract level (predictability of a stimulus change, chapter 5) shows that transferring effects from one modality to another modality (specifically from audition to vision) requires careful choice of stimulus parameters. In this context, we give considerations to the proposal for a wider usage of sequential stopping rules (SSR, chapter 4), especially in studies where effect sizes are hard to estimate a priori. This thesis contributes to the field of visual multistability by providing novel experimental insights into pattern-component rivalry and by linking these findings to data on sequential dependencies, to the optimization of experimental designs, and to models and results from another sensory modality.:Bibliographische Beschreibung 3

Foveal vision before the eyes move: Perceptual correlates of predictive visual processing in the center of gazeKröll, Lisa Maria 12 September 2023 (has links)
Visuelle Information wird am schärfsten wahrgenommen, wenn sie im Zentrum des Sichtfeldes (der Fovea) erscheint. Um relevante Reize mit fovealer Sehschärfe betrachten zu können, führen wir regelmäßig schnelle, ruckartige Augenbewegungen aus, die als Sakkaden bezeichnet werden. Über Jahrzehnte hinweg wurde der Einfluss der Sakkadenvorbereitung auf visuelle Sensitivität am peripheren Augenbewegungsziel untersucht. Gleichzeitig ist überraschend wenig darüber bekannt, wie sich unsere visuelle Wahrnehmung im gegenwärtigen Blickzentrum verändert, bevor eine Sakkade ausgeführt wird. Die in dieser Dissertation vorgestellten Experimente deuten darauf hin, dass foveales Sehen prädiktiv agiert: Definierende Merkmale des Augenbewegungsziels werden am präsakkadischen Fixationsort verstärkt wahrgenommen und somit im Zentrum des Sichtfeldes vorhergesagt. Diese präsakkadische Wahrnehmungsverstärkung zeigte sich als erhöhte Trefferraten für foveal präsentierte Reize, die die gleiche Orientierung wie das Sakkadenziel aufwiesen, sowie als systematisches Antwortverhalten auf zielkongruente Orientierungsinformation in foveal gezeigtem Rauschen. Foveale Vorhersagen waren auf einen kleinen räumlichen Radius um das Blickzentrum beschränkt, während der Sakkadenvorbereitung stärker ausgeprägt als unter Fixation und skalierten mit dem Signal-Rausch-Verhältnis von Orientierungsinformation am Augenbewegungsziel. Wir beobachteten darüber hinaus eine Interaktion zwischen der peripheren Auflösung des Sakkadenziels und dem Raumfrequenzinhalt foveal vorhergesagter Orientierungsinformation. Diese Interaktion legt nahe, dass das Sakkadenziel in seiner präsakkadischen Auflösung foveal antizipiert wurde. Zusammenfassend deuten unsere Ergebnisse darauf hin, dass foveales Sehen einen aktiven Beitrag zur Herstellung visueller Kontinuität leistet. Ein Sakkadenziel wird bereits vor der Bewegung foveal verarbeitet, was einen nahtlosen perzeptuellen Übergang ermöglicht, sobald die Augen auf dem Ziel landen. / Human vision is sharpest in the central part of the visual field (the fovea) and becomes increasingly blurry towards the periphery. To bring relevant information into foveal vision, we frequently execute rapid large-scale eye movements called saccades. Decades of research have characterized the impact of saccade preparation on visual sensitivity at the target of the imminent eye movement. Surprisingly, little is known about the concurrent development of perception in the pre-saccadic center of gaze. This dissertation proposes that foveal processing operates predictively while an eye movement is prepared to a peripheral visual field location: Defining features of the eye movement target are enhanced in the pre-saccadic center of gaze, anticipating the incoming post-saccadic image. In our investigations, enhancement manifested as increased Hit Rates for foveal probes with target-congruent orientation and systematic responses to target-similar orientation information in foveally presented noise. Foveal enhancement was confined to a small spatial region surrounding the pre-saccadic center of gaze, more pronounced during eye movement preparation than during passive fixation, and increased with the signal-to-noise ratio of orientation information at the target location. Intriguingly, we observed an interaction between the pre-saccadic peripheral resolution of the saccade target and the spatial frequency range of foveally enhanced information, suggesting that foveal predictions draw on instantaneous peripheral input. Finally, using a full-screen motion paradigm, we characterize reflexive gaze responses that may provide a continuous oculomotor readout of target anticipation in humans and non-human primates. Combined, our findings suggest an active contribution of foveal processing to transsaccadic visual continuity. Foveal processing of eye movement targets commences before the movement is executed, enabling a seamless perceptual transition immediately upon saccade landing.

No / The eye rotation approach for measuring peripheral eye length leads to concern about whether the rotation influences results, such as through pressure exerted by eyelids or extra-ocular muscles. This study investigated whether this approach is valid. Peripheral eye lengths were measured with a Lenstar LS 900 biometer for eye rotation and no-eye rotation conditions (head rotation for horizontal meridian and instrument rotation for vertical meridian). Measurements were made for 23 healthy young adults along the horizontal visual field (+/- 30 degrees ) and, for a subset of eight participants along the vertical visual field (+/- 25 degrees ). To investigate the influence of the duration of eye rotation, for six participants measurements were made at 0, 60, 120, 180 and 210 s after eye rotation to +/- 30 degrees along horizontal and vertical visual fields. Peripheral eye lengths were not significantly different for the conditions along the vertical meridian (F1,7 = 0.16, p = 0.71). The peripheral eye lengths for the conditions were significantly different along the horizontal meridian (F1,22 = 4.85, p = 0.04), although not at individual positions (p >/= 0.10) and were not important. There were no apparent differences between the emmetropic and myopic groups. There was no significant change in eye length at any position after maintaining position for 210 s. Eye rotation and no-eye rotation conditions were similar for measuring peripheral eye lengths along horizontal and vertical visual field meridians at +/- 30 degrees and +/- 25 degrees , respectively. Either condition can be used to estimate retinal shape from peripheral eye lengths.

The effects of anxiety on visual attention for emotive stimuli in primary school childrenKelly, Lauren January 2014 (has links)
Anxiety can be advantageous in terms of survival and well-being, yet atypically high levels may be maladaptive and result in the clinical diagnosis of an anxiety disorder. Several risk factors have been implicated in the manifestation of clinical anxiety, including cognitive biases. In recent years, a plethora of research has emerged demonstrating that anxious adults exhibit biases of attention for threatening stimuli, especially that which is biologically relevant (e.g., facial expressions). Specific components of attentional bias have also been identified, namely facilitated engagement, impaired disengagement, and avoidance. However, the majority of studies have focused on the spatial domain of attention. Furthermore, the area is under-researched in children, despite research demonstrating that symptoms relating to clinical and non-clinical anxiety follow a stable course from childhood through to adolescence and adulthood. Consequently, the aim of this thesis was to investigate how anxiety affects children’s visual attention for emotive, particularly angry, faces. In order to provide a more comprehensive understanding, the current research involved examining the role of temporal and spatial attention utilising rapid serial visual presentation with the attentional blink, and the visual probe paradigm, respectively. The main hypothesis was that high state and/or trait anxiety would be associated with an attentional bias for angry, relative to positive or neutral faces in both the temporal and spatial domains. In relation to the temporal domain, key findings demonstrated that high levels of trait anxiety were associated with facilitated engagement towards both angry and neutral faces. It was further found that all children rapidly disengaged attention away from angry faces. Findings related to the processing of angry faces accorded with the main hypothesis stated in this thesis, as well as research and theory in the area. The finding that anxious children preferentially processed neutral faces in an attentional blink investigation was unexpected. This was argued to potentially reflect this stimulus type being interpreted as threatening. Key findings regarding the spatial domain were that high trait anxious children displayed an early covert bias of attention away from happy faces and a later, overt bias of attention away from angry faces. The finding that high trait anxiety was linked to an attentional bias away from happy faces in a visual probe task was also unexpected. This was argued to potentially reflect smiling faces being interpreted as signifying social dominance, thus resulting in the viewer experiencing feelings of subordination and becoming avoidant and/or submissive. To conclude, this thesis has enhanced current knowledge of attentional bias in both the temporal and spatial domains for emotive stimuli in anxious children. It has demonstrated that higher levels of trait anxiety moderate children’s allocation of attentional resources to different stimulus types, whether these are threatening, positive, or neutral. This has important implications for evaluating past research in adults and children, and for further developing theoretical models of attentional bias and anxiety. It also offers important clinical implications, since attending towards or away from specific stimuli may affect the development and maintenance of anxiety disorders. Recently, a treatment that aims to modify attentional bias in anxious individuals has begun to be developed. In light of the present findings, it may be necessary to review this treatment so that anxious children are re-trained in the specific biases of attention demonstrated here.

Technology pervades our daily living, and is increasingly integrated into the vehicle – directly affecting driving. On the one hand technology such as cell phones provoke driver distraction and inattention, whereas, on the other hand, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) support the driver in the driving task. The question is, can a driver successfully adapt to the ever growing technological advancements?
Thus, this thesis aimed at improving safe driver behaviour by understanding the underlying psychological mechanisms that influence behavioural change. Previous research on ADAS and human attention was reviewed in the context of driver behavioural adaptation. Empirical data from multiple data sources such as driving performance data, visual behaviour data, video footage, and subjective data were analyzed to evaluate two ADAS (a brake-capacity forward collision warning system, B-FCW, and a Visual Distraction Alert System, VDA-System).
Results from a field operational test (EuroFOT) showed that brake-capacity forward collision warnings lead to immediate attention allocation toward the roadway and drivers hit the brake, yet change their initial response later on by directing their eyes toward the warning source in the instrument cluster. A similar phenomenon of drivers changing initial behaviour was found in a driving simulator study assessing a Visual Distraction Alert System. Analysis showed that a Visual Distraction Alert System successfully assists drivers in redirecting attention to the relevant aspects of the driving task and significantly improves driving performance. The effects are discussed with regard to behavioural adaptation, calibration and system acceptance. Based on these findings a novel assessment for human-machine-interaction (HMI) of ADAS was introduced.
Based on the contribution of this thesis and previous best-practices, a holistic safety management model on accident prevention strategies (before, during and after driving) was developed. The DO-IT BEST Feedback Model is a comprehensive feedback strategy including driver feedback at various time scales and therefore is expected to provide an added benefit for distraction and inattention prevention. The central contributions of this work are to advance research in the field of traffic psychology in the context of attention allocation strategies, and to improve the ability to design future safety systems with the human factor in focus. The thesis consists of the introduction of the conducted research, six publications in full text and a comprehensive conclusion of the publications.

Mobiltelefone) unachtsam wird und visuell abgelenkt ist, andererseits kann die Nutzung von Fahrerassistenzsystemen die den Fahrer bei der Fahraufgabe unterstützten einen wertvollen Beitrag zur Fahrsicherheit bieten. Die steigende Aktualität beider Problematiken wirft die Frage auf: "Kann der Fahrer sich erfolgreich dem ständig wachsenden technologischen Fortschritt anpassen?"
Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist der Erkenntnisgewinn zur Verbesserung des Fahrverhaltens indem der Verhaltensänderungen zugrunde liegende psychologische Mechanismen untersucht werden. Eine Vielzahl an Literatur zu Fahrerassistenzsystemen und Aufmerksamkeitsverteilung wurde vor dem Hintergrund von Verhaltensanpassung der Fahrer recherchiert. Daten mehrerer empirischer Quellen, z. B. Fahrverhalten, Blickbewegungen, Videomitschnitte und subjektive Daten dienten zur Datenauswertung zweier Fahrerassistenzsysteme.
Im Rahmen einer Feldstudie zeigte sich, dass Bremskapazitäts-Kollisionswarnungen zur sofortigen visuellen Aufmerksamkeitsverteilung zur Fahrbahn und zum Bremsen führen, Fahrer allerdings ihre Reaktion anpassen indem sie zur Warnanzeige im Kombinationsinstrument schauen. Ein anderes Phänomen der Verhaltensanpassung wurde in einer Fahrsimulatorstudie zur Untersuchung eines Ablenkungswarnsystems, das dabei hilft die Blicke von Autofahrern stets auf die Straße zu lenken, gefunden. Diese Ergebnisse weisen nach, dass solch ein System unterstützt achtsamer zu sein und sicherer zu fahren.
Die vorliegenden Befunde wurden im Zusammenhang zu Vorbefunden zur Verhaltensanpassung zu Fahrerassistenzsystemen, Fahrerkalibrierung und Akzeptanz von Technik diskutiert. Basierend auf den gewonnenen Erkenntnissen wurde ein neues Vorgehen zur Untersuchung von Mensch- Maschine-Interaktion eingeführt. Aufbauend auf den Resultaten der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde ein ganzheitliches Modell zur Fahrsicherheit und -management, das DO-IT BEST Feedback Modell, entwickelt. Das Modell bezieht sich auf multitemporale Fahrer-Feedbackstrategien und soll somit einen entscheidenen Beitrag zur Verkehrssicherheit und dem Umgang mit Fahrerunaufmerksamkeit leisten. Die zentralen Beiträge dieser Arbeit sind die Gewinnung neuer Erkenntnisse in den Bereichen der Angewandten Psychologie und der Verkehrspsychologie in den Kontexten der Aufmerksamkeitsverteilung und der Verbesserung der Gestaltung von Fahrerassistenzsystemen fokusierend auf den Bediener. Die Dissertation besteht aus einem Einleitungsteil, drei empirischen Beiträgen sowie drei Buchkapiteln und einer abschliessenden Zusammenfassung.

過去二十多年來,心理語言學研究關注詞彙歧義解困 (lexical ambiguity resolution)歷程發生時,語義脈絡與多義詞的語義頻率之間的交互作用。許多研究發現,當語境支持非均勢同形異義詞 (unbalanced homograph) 的次要語義時,同形異義詞的凝視時間長於與其有相同字形頻率的單義詞 (unambiguous control),此為次要語義偏向效應 (subordinate bias effect)。根據再排序觸接模型 (reordered-access model),次要語義偏向效應來自於主要語義與次要語義的競爭;相對地,選擇觸接模型 (selective access model)則認為只有與語境相關的語義被激發,因此,次要語義偏向效應是因為提取到一個使用頻率較低的語義。本論文進行兩個眼動實驗。實驗一檢視中文多義詞的次要語義偏向效應以區辨兩種詞彙歧義解困模型分別提出的解釋。本實驗的材料使用了低頻同形異義詞、低頻單義詞、以及高頻單義詞。結果顯示,當使用的單義詞與多義詞字形頻率相同時,在目標詞及後目標詞上(目標詞後一個詞)皆發生了次要語義偏向效應。實驗二利用口語理解─視覺典範中透過受試者理解語音訊息時同步記錄眼動的作業方式來探究次要語義偏向效應是否來自於主要語義的激發。當口語句子中的目標詞被唸出後,會計算出隨著時間增加眼睛落在四個雙字詞的凝視比例。結果發現次要語義因為語境的選擇在聽到目標詞後大約500毫秒時就可被激發,主要語義則在一聽完多義詞後被激發。因此,多義詞的兩個語義在聽到目標詞後大約900至1300毫秒時(相當於在後目標詞時)發生競爭。整體而言,本研究顯示即使語境支持多義詞的次要語義,主要語義依然會被激發。因此,次要語義偏向效應是由兩個語義競爭後所造成的結果,符合再排序觸接模型的解釋。 / Research in psycholinguistics throughout the last two decades has focused on the interaction between linguistic context and meaning dominance during lexical ambiguity resolution. Many studies demonstrated the subordinate bias effect when the preceding context biased for the subordinate meaning (i.e. infrequent meaning) of an unbalanced homograph. According to the reordered access model, the SBE is due to competition between the dominant and subordinate meanings. On the contrary, the selective access model assumes only the context-relevant meaning is activated and the SBE is a result of access to a low frequent meaning.
Two eye tracking experiments of sentence reading and sentence listening were conducted. Experiment 1 examined the SBE of Chinese homographs to differentiate the two accounts. We utilized low frequency homographs along with their matched low and high-frequency unambiguous words. The results showed the SBE emerging in fixation durations of the target region and post-target region (i.e. next two words of the target), when unambiguous controls were matched to the word-form frequency of ambiguous words.
Experiment 2 used visual world paradigm to explore temporal dynamics of dominant meaning activation responsible for the SBE in an instructional eyetracking-during-listening task. Fixation probabilities on four disyllabic printed words were analyzed during a time period after a target word was uttered in a spoken sentence. The results supported the reordered access model. The subordinate meaning was activated by contextual information at about 500 ms after the onset of acoustic homograph at the time when context penetrated to make its favored meaning available. Soon after the offset of homograph, the dominant meaning became active. Both meanings associated with the homograph were activated during the time windows of 901 ms to 1300 ms, which approximately corresponding to the acoustic onset of post target. In sum, our studies demonstrate that the dominant meaning is activated even when the contextual information biases to the subordinate meaning of a homograph. The subordinate bias effect is the result of competition from two meanings, conforming to the reordered access model.

<p>Experiment One: The Effect of Noise on Autonomic Arousal</p><p><br></p><p>In response to the growing demand for research that helps us understand the complex interactions between Autonomic Arousal (AA) on behavior and performance there is an increasing need for robust techniques to efficiently utilize stimuli, such as sound, to vary the level of AA within a study. The goal of this study was to look at the impact of several factors, including sound intensity, order of presentation, and direction of presentation on skin conductance level, a widely utilized technique for approximating levels of AA. To do this we had 34 young adults ages 18- 34 listen to a series of 2-minute blocks of a sound stimuli based off a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system (HVAC). Blocks included 5 single intensity conditions each block differing in 10 dBA steps ranging from 35-75 dBA. We presented blocks in both rising and falling level of intensity, with half the participants hearing them in a rising order first and half in a falling order first. The evidence found by this study suggests that increasing the sound level plays an important role in increasing AA and habituation is an extremely important factor that must be accounted for as it, in the case of typical young adults, quickly dampens the response to stimuli and subsequent stimuli. These findings suggest that researchers can best efficiently maximize the range of AA they can use while keeping their participants comfortable by starting out with the most intense stimuli and proceeding to the less intense stimuli, working with habitation instead of against it.</p><p> </p><p><br></p><p> Experiment Two: The Effect of Autonomic Arousal on Visual Attention</p><p><br></p><p>The goal of this study was to better understand how various levels of autonomic arousal impact different components of attentional control and if ASD-related traits indexed by Autism Quotient scores (AQ) might relate to alterations in this relationship. This study had 41 young adult participants (23 women, 17 men, 1 prefer not to say), ages ranging from 18 to 38 years old. Participants listened to varying levels of noise to induce changes in AA, which were recorded as changes in skin conductance level (SCL). To evaluate attentional control, participants preformed pro and anti-saccade visual gap–overlap paradigm tasks as measures of attentional control. The findings of this study suggest that increased levels of autonomic arousal are helpful for improving performance on anti-saccade tasks, which are heavily dependent on top-down attentional control. Additionally, increases in AQ scores were related to having less of a benefit from increasing levels of arousal on anti-saccade tasks. Additional interactions were also found and are discussed in this paper.</p>
