"A natureza ensina" uma etnografia sobre modos de fazer mercado na Feira de Agricultores Ecologistas

Cardoni, Júlia Santos January 2017 (has links)
This is an ethnography in a Fair of Ecological Farmers (FAE), in the city of Porto Alegre. The FAE constitutes a singular market from the involvement of producers, consumers and products, having in the ecological engagement and the imagination of an agency nature, important mediators. In this way, this market is constituted as a kind of assemblage, whose act of exchange itself is entangled by political beliefs, discursive forms, aesthetic experiences and rituals that extrapolate, to a great extent, the time and space of the FAE. The objective of this research is to reveal the nexus of this mesh or, following a theoretical orientation of Michel Callon, to explain the way in which this market constitutes culture and society. The ethnographic insertion was fixed in three central axes. The first of them refers to the aesthetics of the market and the devices of ecological sensibility that involve consumers. The second is related to the core management of bureaucracy, regularization and inspection of the fair, the Fair Committee, space where the performativity of agro ecological market is discussed. And the third axis develops discussions about the established link between ecological producers and consumers from ecological and affective performances. The meeting of these axes raises discussions about the agencement of a singular nature, wrapped in certain magic and endowed of wisdom that is effective in engaging market participants

Changing stories and moving bones : correlation of Chinatown and mother-daughter relationships in Kingston's The Woman Warrior and Ng's Bone

Fujii, So 04 June 2012 (has links)
This thesis argues for significant correlations in the politics of representation of Chinatown and mother-daughter relationships in two literary texts by Maxine Hong Kingston and Fae Myenne Ng. The two novels do not follow traditional representations of Chinatown and provide critical representations of Chinatown and mother-daughter relationships. First, Kingston's The Woman Warrior reveals how the heroine demystifies a powerful image of her mother and a mystic image of Chinatown in a process of establishing her autonomy. Second, Ng's Bone describes how the heroine tries to free her mother from a dismal image of Chinatown to live her own life outside Chinatown. The analyses of representation of Chinatown and mother-daughter relationships rely on close readings of the textual motifs through a psychoanalytic framework and cultural theories. / Graduation date: 2012

Particle Transcytosis Across the Human Intestinal Epithelium : Model Development and Target Identification for Improved Drug Delivery

Gullberg, Elisabet January 2005 (has links)
The use of nano- and micro-particulate carriers as delivery systems for oral vaccines has been under investigation for several decades. Surprisingly little is known of their uptake in the human intestine, despite the fact that substantial improvement is required to achieve adequate immune responses in man after oral administration. In this thesis, various aspects of particle transcytosis across the human intestinal epithelium were studied, in order to identify strategies for improved uptake of nano- and micro-particulate drug delivery systems. The follicle associated epithelium (FAE) overlying Peyer´s patches contains M-cells, which have an increased capacity for uptake of particulate antigens. Therefore, a model of human FAE was developed to study mechanisms of particle uptake and transport. Receptors that could be used for targeting to the FAE had previously not been identified in humans. By use of the model FAE, two new targets were identified on human intestinal FAE; CD9 and β1-integrin. Furthermore, studies of isolated human intestinal tissue showed that an integrin-adherent peptide motif, RGD, could be utilized to achieve selective and improved transport of nanoparticles into human Peyer´s patches. Studies of factors influencing intestinal particle uptake and transcytosis revealed that two cytokines, TNF-α and LTα1/β2, but also one growth factor, TGF-β1, induced uptake of particles in Caco-2 cells and transcytosis of particles in the model FAE. Furthermore, it was shown that an enteric bacterium, Yersinia Pseudotuberculosis, could trigger uptake and transcytosis of particles across model absorptive epithelial cells. In conclusion, this thesis provides a platform for further investigations of particle transcytosis across the human intestinal epithelium. The identification of two new proteins with increased expression in human FAE and a targeting sequence that improves particle uptake into Peyer’s patches, gives new hope for the development of subunit oral vaccines.

Diagnostic subgroups and neuropsychological attention deficits in fetal alcohol syndrome

Block, Gerald W. 01 January 2000 (has links)
In 1996, the Institute of Medicine made an initial step towards addressing the confusion and controversy regarding the diagnosis of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) by proposing a classification scheme and calling for research to evaluate its validity and clinical utility. Previous research evaluated memory, executive functions, and behaviour problems in FAS. Prior to the present study, however, there had not been an empirical evaluation of the existence of a spectrum of diagnostic subgroups or an evaluation of subgroup functioning on neuropsychological components of attention during the pre-teen and adolescent years. Part 1 of this study used categorical data regarding diagnostic domains to determine if an a priori spectrum of four subgroups could be identified. This spectrum included FAS and three fetal alcohol effect (FAE) subgroups, which were defined using teratogenic theory, previous research findings, and logic. The sample consisted of 112 children with a confirmed history of excessive prenatal alcohol exposure. Part 2 evaluated the continuity and comparability of the CNS dysfunction subgroups exhibited by assessing neuropsychological components of attention using models by Mirsky and Conners. The sample consisted of 30 children and subgroups were matched on age, sex, and living situation. Results identified 3 of the 4 potential subgroups. All subgroups exhibited a clinically significant attention deficit. After adjusting for IQ, the FAS and FAE subgroups had comparable levels of functioning on all components of attention with one exception. On the sustain component, the FAE subgroups had more difficulties than the FAS subgroup in maintaining a consistent response-speed in response to changes in the length of time between targets. This study provides empirical and theoretical support for the validity and clinical utility of a spectrum of fetal alcohol subgroups consistent with the IOM's classification. It furthers a theoretical understanding of the dose-response effects of alcohol as a teratogenic agent. It suggests that attention regulation functions are especially vulnerable to the damage caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. The findings emphasize the importance of obtaining a history of prenatal alcohol exposure in individuals presenting with neuropsychological difficulties, and developing treatment programs for pregnant women with an alcohol addiction.
