The robustness of LISREL estimates in structural equation models with categorical data

This study was an examination of the effect of type of correlation matrix on the robustness of LISREL maximum likelihood and unweighted least squares structural parameter estimates for models with categorical manifest variables. Two types of correlation matrices were analyzed; one containing Pearson product-moment correlations and one containing tetrachoric, polyserial, and product-moment correlations as appropriate. Using continuous variables generated according to the equations defining the population model, three cases were considered by dichotomizing some of the variables with varying degrees of skewness. When Pearson product-moment correlations were used to estimate associations involving dichotomous variables, the structural parameter estimates were biased when skewness was present in the dichotomous variables. Moreover, the degree of bias was consistent for both the maximum likelihood and unweighted least squares estimates. The standard errors of the estimates were found to be inflated, making significance tests unreliable. The analysis of mixed matrices produced average estimates that more closely approximated the model parameters except in the case where the dichotomous variables were skewed in opposite directions. However, since goodness-of-fit statistics and standard errors are not available in LISREL when tetrachoric and polyserial correlations are used, the unbiased estimates are not of practical significance. Until alternative computer programs are available that employ distribution-free estimation procedures that consider the skewness and kurtosis of the variables, researchers are ill-advised to employ LISREL in the estimation of structural equation models containing skewed categorical manifest variables. / Ph. The role of visual association cortices during response selection processes in interference-modulated response stopping

Response inhibition and the ability to navigate distracting information are both integral parts of cognitive control and are imperative to adaptive behavior in everyday life. Thus far, research has only inconclusively been able to draw inferences regarding the association between response stopping and the effects of interfering information. Using a novel combination of the Simon task and a stop signal task, the current study set out to investigate the behavioral as well as the neurophysiological underpinnings of the relationship between response stopping and interference processing. We tested n = 27 healthy individuals and combined temporal EEG signal decomposition with source localization methods to delineate the precise neurophysiological dynamics and functional neuroanatomical structures associated with conflict effects on response stopping. The results showed that stopping performance was compromised by conflicts. Importantly, these behavioral effects were reflected by specific aspects of information coded in the neurophysiological signal, indicating that conflict effects during response stopping are not mediated via purely perceptual processes. Rather, it is the processing of specific, stop-relevant stimulus features in the sensory regions during response selection, which underlies the emergence of conflict effects in response stopping. The findings connect research regarding response stopping with overarching theoretical frameworks of perception–action integration.

Nos últimos anos, a evolução dos processadores e redes para computadores de baixo custo foi muito maior se comparada com o aumento do desempenho dos discos de armazenamento de dados. Com isso, muitas aplicações estão encontrando dificuldades em atingir o pleno uso dos processadores, pois estes têm de esperar até que os dados cheguem para serem utilizados. Uma forma popular para resolver esse tipo de empecílio é a adoção de sistemas de arquivos paralelos, que utilizam a velocidade da rede local, além dos recursos de cada máquina, para suprir a deficiência de desempenho no uso isolado de cada disco. Neste estudo, analisamos alguns sistemas de arquivos paralelos e distribuídos, detalhando aqueles mais interessantes e importantes. Por fim, mostramos que o uso de um sistema de arquivos paralelo pode ser mais eficiente e vantajoso que o uso de um sistema de arquivos usual, para apenas um cliente. / In the last years, the evolution of the data processing power and network transmission for low cost computers was much bigger if compared to the increase of the speed of getting the data stored in disks. Therefore, many applications are finding difficulties in reaching the full use of the processors, because they have to wait until the data arrive before using. A popular way to solve this problem is to use a parallel file system, which uses the local network speed to avoid the performance bottleneck found in an isolated disk. In this study, we analyze some parallel and distributed file systems, detailing the most interesting and important ones. Finally, we show the use of a parallel file system can be more efficient than the use of a usual local file system, for just one client.

Energy savings and performance improvements with SSDs in the Hadoop Distributed File System / Economia de energia e aumento de desempenho usando SSDs no Hadoop Distributed File System

Energy issues gathered strong attention over the past decade, reaching IT data processing infrastructures. Now, they need to cope with such responsibility, adjusting existing platforms to reach acceptable performance while promoting energy consumption reduction. As the de facto platform for Big Data, Apache Hadoop has evolved significantly over the last years, with more than 60 releases bringing new features. By implementing the MapReduce programming paradigm and leveraging HDFS, its distributed file system, Hadoop has become a reliable and fault tolerant middleware for parallel and distributed computing over large datasets. Nevertheless, Hadoop may struggle under certain workloads, resulting in poor performance and high energy consumption. Users increasingly demand that high performance computing solutions address sustainability and limit energy consumption. In this thesis, we introduce HDFSH, a hybrid storage mechanism for HDFS, which uses a combination of Hard Disks and Solid-State Disks to achieve higher performance while saving power in Hadoop computations. HDFSH brings, to the middleware, the best from HDs (affordable cost per GB and high storage capacity) and SSDs (high throughput and low energy consumption) in a configurable fashion, using dedicated storage zones for each storage device type. We implemented our mechanism as a block placement policy for HDFS, and assessed it over six recent releases of Hadoop with different architectural properties. Results indicate that our approach increases overall job performance while decreasing the energy consumption under most hybrid configurations evaluated. Our results also showed that, in many cases, storing only part of the data in SSDs results in significant energy savings and execution speedups / Ao longo da última década, questões energéticas atraíram forte atenção da sociedade, chegando às infraestruturas de TI para processamento de dados. Agora, essas infraestruturas devem se ajustar a essa responsabilidade, adequando plataformas existentes para alcançar desempenho aceitável enquanto promovem a redução no consumo de energia. Considerado um padrão para o processamento de Big Data, o Apache Hadoop tem evoluído significativamente ao longo dos últimos anos, com mais de 60 versões lançadas. Implementando o paradigma de programação MapReduce juntamente com o HDFS, seu sistema de arquivos distribuídos, o Hadoop tornou-se um middleware tolerante a falhas e confiável para a computação paralela e distribuída para grandes conjuntos de dados. No entanto, o Hadoop pode perder desempenho com determinadas cargas de trabalho, resultando em elevado consumo de energia. Cada vez mais, usuários exigem que a sustentabilidade e o consumo de energia controlado sejam parte intrínseca de soluções de computação de alto desempenho. Nesta tese, apresentamos o HDFSH, um sistema de armazenamento híbrido para o HDFS, que usa uma combinação de discos rígidos e discos de estado sólido para alcançar maior desempenho, promovendo economia de energia em aplicações usando Hadoop. O HDFSH traz ao middleware o melhor dos HDs (custo acessível por GB e grande capacidade de armazenamento) e SSDs (alto desempenho e baixo consumo de energia) de forma configurável, usando zonas de armazenamento dedicadas para cada dispositivo de armazenamento. Implementamos nosso mecanismo como uma política de alocação de blocos para o HDFS e o avaliamos em seis versões recentes do Hadoop com diferentes arquiteturas de software. Os resultados indicam que nossa abordagem aumenta o desempenho geral das aplicações, enquanto diminui o consumo de energia na maioria das configurações híbridas avaliadas. Os resultados também mostram que, em muitos casos, armazenar apenas uma parte dos dados em SSDs resulta em economia significativa de energia e aumento na velocidade de execução

O presente trabalho avaliou, por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), a limpeza das paredes dos canais radiculares instrumentados pelas técnicas rotatória e Self-adjusting file (SAF®) com uso do NaOCl a 1% como solução irrigadora e o uso do EDTA a 15% e da Quitosana 0,20% como soluções quelantes, e quantificou os íons cálcio removidos pelas diferentes soluções irrigadoras por meio de espectrometria de absorção atômica. Trinta dentes caninos inferiores humanos foram divididos em dois grupos (n=15), de acordo com a técnica de instrumentação utilizada: A - instrumentos FlexMaster® usados na técnica Free Tip Preparation, assegurado alargamento mínimo de 200, até o instrumento # 60.02, irrigados com 1 mL de NaOCl 1% em cada troca de instrumento e B - sistema SAF®, com prévio alargamento manual até o instrumento K #20, aplicação da SAF® por 4 minutos, com fluxo de irrigação pelo sistema VATEA de 5mL/min. Os dentes foram divididos em três subgrupos conforme a irrigação final: G1-NaOCl 1%, G2- EDTA 15% e G3 Quitosana 0,20%. Utilizou-se 5mL de cada solução à 1mL/min. A solução extravasada pelo forame foi coletada e submetida à análise espectrométrica. O EDTA 15% apresentou maior capacidade de remoção de íons cálcio do que a Quitosana a 0,20% (p<0,05) e o NaOCl 1% não removeu íons. Os espécimes foram analisados em MEV. As fotomicrografias obtidas foram avaliadas qualitativamente em relação à remoção da camada de smear observada. Não houve diferença entre as instrumentações rotatória e SAF® nos terços dos canais avaliados. Analisadas as interações entre as técnicas utilizadas e aos terços do canal, o EDTA 15% apresentou melhores resultados que a Quitosana 0,20% (p<0,05), sendo ambas as soluções melhores que o NaOCl 1%. Conclui-se que as soluções quelantes testadas foram capazes de remover íons cálcio das paredes dos canais radiculares - com superioridade do EDTA 15% sobre a Quitosana 0,20%, e o NaOCl a 1% não apresentou essa capacidade - e removeram a camada de smear das paredes dos canais radiculares com superioridade do EDTA 15%, sem interferência das técnicas de instrumentação avaliadas rotatória e SAF®. / The present study evaluated, by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the cleanness of the root canal walls instrumented by rotary and the self-adjusting file (SAF®) techniques using 1% NaOCl as an irrigating solution and 15% EDTA, 0.20% Chitosan as chelator solutions, and quantified the calcium ions removed by the different irrigants with atomic absorption spectrometry. 混合雲帳號整合、檔案權限管理與同步系統之研究 / A Research into Account Integration, Authorization and Content Synchronization of Hybrid Cloud

隨著網際網路的蓬勃發展、雲端運算的興起,各種公有雲端服務林立,企業組織擁有更多不同的選擇與更經濟的解決方案,因此也願意投入更多花費在公有雲上。其中,最重要的一項服務為檔案同步與分享服務(File Synchronization and Sharing, FSS),其可為企業組織帶來生產力,但在無法完全信任公有雲端服務的情況下,在檔案管理及服務上勢必會採用混合雲部署,私有雲端環境用來處理敏感度較高的資料而敏感度較低的檔案及文件才會採用公有雲端服務。 本研究將探討在混合雲環境下會遇到的使用者多重帳號及身分,以及檔案一致性的問題。我們提出一套整合不同雲端平台帳號的架構和方法,在檔案同步上,設計出三次同步訊息交換和兩階段同步的機制,並且架構出一個入口網站(Portal)服務,根據以上設計架構,實作出一個在混合雲環境,跨本地端、公有雲與私有雲的雲端帳號整合,檔案權限管理與同步之系統,最終可以解決在混合雲環境,不同雲端平台多重帳號的困擾,並可以維持不同裝置和雲端之間檔案資料和權限一致性。本研究最後針對實作出的系統之三大功能模組進行測試,驗證本系統各元件模組的正確性和穩定性,測試結果都是通過的;也針對公、私有雲端,測試檔案同步時間,衡量各種大小檔案同步所需要花費的時間,驗證本系統的效能和實用性。 / As rapid growth of cloud computing and Internet, there are variety public cloud service providers on the market, and enterprises will have more choices and economical IT solutions, therefore, they are willing to spend more on public cloud. Although, the most significant of cloud-based productivity services is file synchronization and sharing, enterprises cannot fully trust public cloud, they will deploy file management system with hybrid cloud which they store less sensitive data on public cloud and highly sensitive data on private cloud. This study aim to design a system on hybrid cloud deployment that can solve the problems regarding too many online accounts and synchronize data and permissions between different devices and cloud to maintain consistency. We propose a method to integrate accounts on different cloud and design a mechanize of file synchronization which contains three steps messages flows and two stages synchronization to implement the system, otherwise, we also create a portal service. Last but not least, we test three main modules of the system to verify correctness and stability and the results are all pass. Also, we measure the synchronization time of files with different size to verify effectiveness and practicality.

The increased use of digital media to store legal, as well as illegal data, has created the need for specialized tools that can monitor, control and even recover this data. An important task in computer forensics and security is to identify the true le type to which a computer le or computer le fragment belongs. File type identi cation is traditionally done by means of metadata, such as le extensions and le header and footer signatures. As a result, traditional metadata-based le object type identi cation techniques work well in cases where the required metadata is available and unaltered. However, traditional approaches are not reliable when the integrity of metadata is not guaranteed or metadata is unavailable. As an alternative, any pattern in the content of a le object can be used to determine the associated le type. This is called content-based le object type identi cation. Supervised learning techniques can be used to infer a le object type classi er by exploiting some unique pattern that underlies a le type's common le structure. This study builds on existing literature regarding the use of supervised learning techniques for content-based le object type identi cation, and explores the combined use of multilayer perceptron neural network classi ers and linear programming-based discriminant classi ers as a solution to the multiple class le fragment type identi cation problem. The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the use of a single multilayer perceptron neural network classi er, a single linear programming-based discriminant classi- er and a combined ensemble of these classi ers in the eld of le type identi cation. The ability of each individual classi er and the ensemble of these classi ers to accurately predict the le type to which a le fragment belongs were tested empirically. The study found that both a multilayer perceptron neural network and a linear programming- based discriminant classi er (used in a round robin) seemed to perform well in solving the multiple class le fragment type identi cation problem.
