Third-harmonic generation at interfaces with femtosecond pulses: self-focusing contribution and nonlinear microscopy / Geração de terceiro harmônico em interfaces com pulsos de femtossegundos: contribuição da autofocalização e microscopia não linear

Émerson Cristiano Barbano 24 November 2016 (has links)
Third-harmonic generation (THG) is a fundamental nonlinear optical process that has been used in different applications such as third-order nonlinear materials characterization and nonlinear microscopy. It is widely employed since the third-order nonlinearity is the most important in isotropic materials and THG occurs in all media regardless of symmetry. In the tightly focused laser beam condition THG is observed only at the materials interfaces, where the focal symmetry is broken due to the presence of two media with different refractive index and/or third-order susceptibilities. Measuring slabs of different types of optical glasses, using femtosecond laser pulses, we could explain the asymmetric THG intensity profile observed at the interfaces. The harmonic generated at the exit interface is systematically stronger than the one generated at the entrance and this phenomenon can be understood by taking into account the presence of self-focusing effects. Basically, the self-focusing reduces the beam waist radius at the exit interface, resulting in greater laser irradiance and, consequently, higher THG. This study was then extended to the interfaces of a cuvette filled with organic solvents. Such systems present four interfaces and a mixture of nonlinear processes contributions since the cuvette walls present only electronic nonlinearity and the solvents present both electronic and orientational ones. In this way, the solvents may present an additional self-focusing contribution and, due to the noninstantaneous nature of the orientational process, the self-focusing from the solvent may be influenced by the pulse duration. In this case, the THG, which is an instantaneous electronic phenomenon, can be indirectly affected by pulse duration by means of the self-focusing effect. Usually, the slow orientational contribution is not considered for materials characterization by THG which may lead to incorrect nonlinear coefficient values, that means our study is important from the fundamental physics point of view and also for applications such as materials characterization. Based on the application of THG in nonlinear microscopy, we also present a microscopy technique which makes use of spatial frequency-modulated imaging (SPIFI) with single element detection. The microscope was developed at Colorado School of Mines (CSM) during an internship. The system uses a spatial light modulator (SLM) to provide the spatial frequency modulation and permits enhanced resolution images. THG SPIFI images are shown for the first time and we also report images obtained by other nonlinear optical process. In summary, the studies presented in this PhD work are of great importance for THG fundamental understanding, materials characterization and nonlinear optical microscopy.

Linguistic change, in this sense, is inherent to the functioning of the language, occurring in a gradient and radial manner and inseparable from the contexts of communication use. In this thesis, we study the grammatical construction que só, which acts as an intensifier in the assessments that the speakers make during the interaction. This grammatical construction is a focusing construct instantiated in the uses from the chunking of a focus marker (que) and a focusing adverb (só). Their different uses crystallize in the language three subschemas with contexts of different shape and direction: the focal subschema, the focal-intensifying subschema and the intensifying subschema. Our general objective is to characterize these subschemas, also evidencing their linkages to the more abstract schemes of the focus and to the scheme of intensification in Brasilian Portuguese. To do this study, we seek theoretical support in Cognitive Linguistics, from authors such as LAKOFF, 1987; LAKOFF and JOHNSON, 1980; LANGACKER, 1987; TAYLOR, 1995; FILLMORE, 1982; FILLMORE, KAY and O'CONNOR, 1988; FAUCONNIER, 1994; 1997; among others. We also sought guidance in the Constructional Grammar, considering LANGACKER, 2009; GOLDBERG, 1995; 2006; CROFT, 2001; CROFT and CRUISE, 2004; BYBEE, 2010; 2015; among others. And we still seek theoretical methodological support in Usage Based Linguistics from the works of DIEWALD, 2002; TRAUGOTT and DASHER, 2005; TRAUGOTT, 2008; MARTELOTTA, 2011; TRAUGOTT and TROUSDALE, 2012; 2013; DIESSEL, 2015; OLIVEIRA and ROSÁRIO, 2015; JUNIOR and ALONSO, 2016; CASSEB-GALVÃO, 2017; among others. Through synchronic analysis of data from different corpora (Corpus de Português, data collection on the web, Que Só, from Liedo Maranhão), we understand that the focusing construct que só starts in the comparative focusing subschema with a reference and emphasis function, within the scheme of the focusing constructs in PB. Some uses in this subschema present semantic ambiguity, forming a prefabricated grammatical construct with adverbial intensifying value. In a more abstract level of the uses of the focalization appears the intensifying focus subschema, belonging to the PB intensification scheme. The focusing constructs que só function in PB as a trigger for cognitive representations of measures of magnitude, with gradients in the abstraction of the senses crystallized by contexts of use.

Gabriel Gustinelli Arantes de Carvalho 10 February 2011 (has links)
Maiores intensidades das linhas Ca I 442,554, Mg I 277,983, P I 213,618, Al I 309,271, B I 249,773, Cu I 324,755, Fe II 261,187, Mn II 257,610 e Zn II 206,200 nm foram obtidas com fluências entre 35 e 60 J cm-2 e diâmetros de focalização entre 600 e 1050 \'mü\'m. Most recently, it was demonstrated that laser induced breakdown spectrometry (LIBS) constitutes an alternative for the simultaneous determination of macro- and micronutrients in pellets of plant materials. However, there is no information regarding the most appropriate fluence and laser focusing for analysis of pellets of plant materials. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of laser focusing and fluence on LIBS analysis of plants. The effect of particle size on LIBS analysis of pellets of plant materials as well as sample preparation approaches were also discussed. The experimental setup was designed by using a Q-switch Nd:YAG laser (5 n\'delta\', 360 mJ, 10 Hz, _ \'lâmbda\' = 1064 nm) and the emission signals were collected by lenses into an optical fiber coupled to an echelle spectrometer equipped with a high-resolution ICCD. Instrumental parameters consisted of 20 accumulated laser pulses, 2.0 \'mü\'s delay time and 5.0 \'mü\'s integration time gate. Pellets prepared from cryogenically ground plant leaves (90 % particles < 50 \'mü\'m; median = 10 \'mü\'m) were used as laboratory samples and 6 laser spot diameters (from 180 to 1050 \'mü\'m) at different laser fluences were evaluated. Results indicate that elements emission intensities increased with both laser fluence and spot diameter. Higher intensities for Ca I 442.554, Mg I 277.983, P I 213.618, Al I 309.271, B I 249.773, Cu I 324.755, Fe II 261.187, Mn II 257.610, and Zn II 206.200 nm emission lines were observed with fluences in the 35 - 60 J cm-2 range and spot diameters between 600 and 1050 \'mü\'m. Higher spot diameters improved mass removal and minimized repeatability drawbacks. It was observed that the coefficients of variation (CV) of site-to-site measurements decreased by using higher laser focusing diameters. By fixing the laser spot diameter at 750 \'mü\'m, the CV of measurements improved at least 2-fold for all analytes when 50 J cm-2 was applied in comparison to 20 J cm-2. These results can be attributed to a larger mass removal obtained at higher laser fluences and better laser sampling representativeness. Sensitivity did also increase with laser fluence but no significant differences were observed in the detection limits using 25 and 50 J cm-2. Although emission intensities increased with laser fluence the background emission and noise increased as well. On the other hand, particle size distribution of powdered samples affects the atomization and excitation efficiencies by laser induced plasmas. When larger particles are incompletely vaporized the resulting emission signals were lower than those obtained from smaller particles. In this work, significant improvements on emission intensities and CV of measurements were observed when pellets made with particles < 75 \'mü\'m were analyzed. No significant differences were observed (emission intensities and CV of measurements) in the analysis of pellets prepared with particles in the 20-75 \'mü\'m range. Pellets prepared with particles > 75 \'mü\'m presented cohesion drawbacks and resulted non uniform craters after laser ablation. The CV of measurements for most analytes in these materials was > 15 %. Therefore, similar particle size distribution between calibration and test samples is recommended to avoid physical matrix effects on laser-sample interaction

Nouvelles modalités de diagnostic et de traitement du cancer de prostate : place des ultrasons focalisés de haute intensité (HIFU) / New diagnosis and treatment modalities for prostate cancer : Role of High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

Crouzet, Sébastien 16 January 2014 (has links)
The first part of this work include the clinical results of HIFU for prostate cancer as the first line treatment, salvage treatment, and in challenging clinical cases. Those results were also evaluated according to the technical evolution of the devices. Oncological, functional outcomes as well as weak point of HIFU have been drawn with the obtained data. The second part of this work was the preclinical and clinical development of the new dynamic focusing probe. For this, an animal model has been developed in order to evaluate the capacity of the probe to spear the rectal wall while treating large and deep lesion. It was a porcine model with a part of the caecum fixed onto the liver. HIFU treatments were applied on the liver through the vascularized colon. Treatment parameters for whole gland ablation as well as focal treatment were developed based on the pathology report. Clinical trial have been started based on those treatment parameters, first with the prototype and then with the Focal One®

Modelling of injection of electrons by low-dimensional nanowire into a reservoir

Yakymenko, Ivan January 2018 (has links)
High-mobility two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) which resides at the interface between GaAs and AlGaAs layered semiconductors has been used experimentally and theoretically to study ballistic electron transport. The present project is motivated by recent experiments in magnetic electron focusing. The proposed device consists of two quantum point contacts (QPCs) serving as electron injector and detector which are placed in the same semiconductor GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. This thesis is focused on the theoretical study of electron flow coming from the injector QPC (a short quantum wire) and going into an open two-dimensional (2D) reservoir. The transport is considered for non-interacting electrons at different transmission regimes using the mode-matching technique. The proposed mode-matching technique has been implemented numerically using Matlab software. Electron flow through the quantum wire with rectangular, conical and rounded openings has been studied with and without an applied electric bias. We have found that the geometry of the opening does not play a crucial role for the electron flow propagation while the conical opening allows the electrons to travel longer distances into the 2D reservoir. When electric bias is applied, the electron flow also penetrates farther into the 2D region. The results of this study can be applied in designing magnetic focusing devices.

Caractérisation et contrôle des profils spatiaux, spectraux et temporels de faisceaux XUV obtenus par génération d’harmoniques d’ordres élevés dans des gaz / Characterization and control of XUV beam spatial, spectral and temporal profiles obtain by high order harmonic generation in gases

Quintard, Ludovic 12 July 2017 (has links)
We present our work on the control of high order harmonic generation in gases. We first show how, by generating the harmonics outside the focus of the IR beam,it is possible to control the spatial phase of the harmonics in the generating mediumallowing to obtain a divergent, collimated or convergent wavefront. With this methodwe show that it is possible to focus the harmonics up to six Rayleigh length after thefocal point of the IR beam. Then we study XUV harmonic beams presenting structuredspacio-spectral distributions in the far field. In this study, we observe the influence ofthe diameter of an iris positioned before the focusing of the IR. In a third step we studymethods for controlling the harmonic spectrum. First, we finely control the harmonicscentral wavelength by modifiying the spectral content of the IR by adding two delayedIR pulses. Then we used the collective effects of the high order harmonic generationin order to foster a specific harmonic or a group of harmonics in the far field. Finally,we present a method for characterizing the duration of attosecond pulses in the timedomain. This method, called ionization ladder, uses ionization as a probe to measurepulse duration of up to hundreds of attosecond.

Pratiques de lobbying des ONG au Burkina Faso : une évaluation des stratégies / Lobbying practices of NGOs in Burkina Faso : an evaluation of their strategies

Dadjo, Crépin Hilaire 08 September 2016 (has links)
Lobbying, which originates from an anglo-saxon culture, is nowadays widely known as influential efforts oriented towards policy makers and public policies. Burkina Faso, in West Africa, does not depart from this general rule. In effect, one can observe Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) using lobbying techniques to promote great causes including, for instance, good governance in the social-political area, the fight against corruption, the free access to antiretroviral drugs to people living with HIV/AIDS, the promotion of hygiene and sanitation services to disadvantaged rural populations. But how exactly are communications actions put in place? And how can one observe and analyze them from the standpoint of the “Sciences de l’Information et de la Communication” (Public Relations) in general, and the organizational communication, in particular? Our investigation method is qualitative based and constructivist. A semi-structured interview guide has helped collect data from 4 groups of NGOs, each composed of 4 entities, which makes a total of 16 people interviewed. The thematic analysis of the content of all interviews, faced with other sources of information including the media clippings, gave us confirmation of many things. First, we learnt that the media are being used as mediators between Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) – to which NGOs are attached – and the governing body. Secondly, it appears that the control of information is critical to exerting political influence and that networking (or coalition building) with allied people or organizations is also instrumental. Another finding shows that the regime in place, which is not totally democratic, (at the time the study was performed), is open to both negotiation and confrontation strategies with CSOs. Lastly, our study shows that “focusing events” on public opinion are accelerators of social and political regulation process.

Retournement temporel : application aux réseaux mobiles / Time reversal for mobile networks

This thesis studies the time reversal technique to improve the energy efficiency of future mobile networks and reduce the cost of future mobile devices. Time reversal technique consists in using the time inverse of the propagation channel impulse response (between a transceiver and a receiver) as a prefilter. Such pre-filtered signal is received with a stronger power (this is spatial focusing) and with a strong main echo, relatively to secondary echoes (this is time compression). During a previous learning phase, the transceiver estimates the channel by measuring the pilot signal emitted by the receiver. Space-time focusing is obtained only at the condition that the propagation remains identical between the learning phase and the data transmission phase: this is the ‘channel reciprocity’ condition. Numerous works show that spatial focusing allows for the reduction of the required transmit power for a given target received power, on the one hand, and that time compression allow for the reduction of the required complexity at the receiver side to handle multiple echoes, on the other hand. However, studies on complexity reduction are limited to ultra wideband. Some works of this thesis (based on simulations and experimental measurements) show that, for bands which are more typical for future networks (a carrier frequency of 1GHz and a spectrum of 30 MHz to 100 MHz), thanks to time reversal, a simple receiver and a mono-carrier signal are sufficient to reach high data rates. Moreover, the channel reciprocity condition is not verified in two scenarios which are typical from mobile networks. Firstly, in most European mobile networks, the frequency division duplex mode is used. This mode implies that the transceiver and the receiver communicate on distinct carriers, and therefore through different propagation channels. Secondly, when considering a receiver on a moving connected vehicle, the transceiver and the receiver communicate one with each other at distinct instants, corresponding to distinct positions of the vehicles, and therefore through different propagation channels. Some works of this thesis propose solutions to obtain space-time focusing for these two scenarios. Finally, some works of this thesis explore the combination of time reversal with other recent signal processing techniques (spatial modulation, on the one hand, a new multi-carrier waveform, on the other hand), or new deployment scenarios (millimeter waves and large antenna arrays to interconnect the nodes of an ultra dense network) or new applications (guidance and navigation) which can be envisaged for future mobile networks.
