Family Business Adaptation to Disruptive Technology : Case Studies on Family Businesses in Handling the Challenges of Disruptive Technology and Maintaining Competitive Advantage within a Swedish Market

Disruptive technologies continue to pose challenges for industries worldwide, and firms are constantly learning how to adapt in order to remain competitive. Family businesses are not immune to these “shocks” in their industry, and they too need to harness the potential advantages of novel technology just as much as corporations do. While there is extensive research on the methods and strategies employed by multinational corporations, the study of how a family business could or should adapt is virtually unexplored. There is a need to understand the intricate decision making process of business leadership in dealing with disruptive technology, particularly in regards to maintaining or gaining a competitive advantage. This study conducted in-depth qualitative interviews with three Swedish family businesses, all who were successful in adopting disruptive technologies to their benefit. Although each of the businesses took different paths for technology adaptation and to maintain their competitive advantage there was a consistent thread in the leadership strategy. The results revealed that strong family leadership, in the form of stewardship, was essential to maintaining their competitive advantage while dealing with the challenges of disruptive technology. Stewardship places emphasis on family core values, the drive to improve the performance of the business for the benefit for family and the employees, and a commitment to long-term goals. Stewardship proved to be the determining factors for these families in their successful disruptive technology adaption.

Small and medium-sized companies in Italy --the backbone of the economy or an obsolete production system? Analyse and prediction of the future development. This thesis is focused on the problems of small and medium-sized companies in Italy in the actual context of globalization and strong competion, especially in the traditional italian industries. Moreover, the political situation in the country is quite unstable and together with the omnipresent bureaucracy the everyday life is more difficult for the companies. In the first part I introduce the history backgrounds of the small and middle-sized companies and also the italian phenomenon "distretti industriali" -- indutrial districts. I also dedicated the first chapter to the specific features of family companies. In the second part the main social-economic problems of the country are described as well as some possible strategies in the context of the state export-focused programmes coordinated on the EU level. With the help of some companies that agreed to answer my questionary I tried to analyse the situation in state assistance to these companies In the last part, the reactions and answers of the companies are summed-up.

La présente thèse rentre dans le cadre de la gouvernance des entreprises familiales malgaches. Il s’agit d’identifier, dans le cadre malgache, les relations entre l’incertitude et le degré d’ouverture des entreprises familiales. Nous avons procédé à l’analyse des cartes cognitives idiosyncratiques de cinq dirigeants-propriétaires d’entreprises familiales.Les résultats révèlent que la prise en compte des différentes dimensions de l’incertitude en tant qu’attribut des transactions, apporte une meilleure compréhension du degré d’ouverture de ces firmes en tant que mode de gouvernance. Par ailleurs, des variables exogènes qui relèvent de l’Institution influencent le choix des modes de gouvernance. De plus, le profil de l’entrepreneur ainsi que les caractéristiques de l’entreprise ont montré leurs capacités explicatives dans la détermination des limites de la firme.En somme, le travail a débouché sur un modèle intégré de la gouvernance sur une base cognitive. Ce modèle prend en compte la perception des attributs des transactions, les institutions mises en place pour encadrer ces transactions, tout ceci dans un contexte bien déterminé. / This thesis is part of the global issue of malagasy family business’ governance. Our goal is to identify, in the malagasy context, the relationship between uncertainty and the degree of openness of those companies. We proceed through the analysis of the idiosyncratic cognitive cards of five owner-directors of family owned companies.The results show that by taking into account the different dimensions of uncertainty as an attribute of the transactions, bring a better understanding of the degree of openness as a choice of governance. Moreover, exogenous variable, part of Institution, influence the governance model. In addition of that, the entrepreneurs’ profile or the characteristics of the companies have shown their explaining abilities while determining the firms’ limits.In summ, we arrive to an integrated model of governance in a cognitive basis. This model consider the attributes of transaction, the institution and the particular context of the study.

The diploma thesis is focused on drawing up a strategic development plan of the small family business operating in minibus transport services. The theoretical part deals with definitions and assumptions about a possible development and growth of companies, specific features of a family business including descriptions of selected analytical and research methods used in these issues. The second, analytical part of the thesis contains practical application of selected methods of a business environmental analysis with the aim to identify key factors influencing the company. Subsequently, the choice of an appropriate alternative to the strategic development of the company is based on the results of the analyses and research. In the third part, the selected option is elaborating into a strategic plan that will lead to consolidate company’s position on the marketplace and to increase its sales. The proposals also include a risk analysis and an evaluation of benefits of the proposed changes.

La investigación está orientada al planteamiento de una propuesta de gestión corporativa para empresas familiares del sector transporte, puesto que al analizar este sector se encontró la necesidad de las empresas por plantear estrategias que las ayude a sostenerse en el tiempo, debido a que sus operaciones no las realizan de manera eficiente y por ello no les permite crecer en el mercado. A lo largo de esta investigación se tomó como referencia a diversos autores en temas administrativos que permitieron desarrollar el marco teórico, el cual servirá de base para plantear la propuesta de modelo de gestión corporativa para una empresa familiar con giro de negocio el transporte público en Lima, además como parte del análisis del sector se consultó estudios y datos informativos por parte del ministerio de transportes y comunicaciones, entidad reguladora del sector, para tener un panorama exacto del rubro, además de observar la situación del transporte público en la ciudad y cómo operan en la actualidad. En cuanto a la empresa, el grupo de investigación tuvo contacto con el gerente general de la empresa San Antonio S.A., la cual cumple con las características fundamentales para el desarrollo del trabajo. Finalmente, el proyecto llega a la conclusión que la empresa necesita realizar una correcta gestión corporativa, por ello podría tomar en cuenta la propuesta planteada con la finalidad de poder sostenerse en el tiempo y diferenciarse de la competencia. / The research is oriented to the approach of a company of corporate management for familiar companies of the sector of transport, since to analyze this sector was found the necessity of the companies for the posing strategies that help them to be sustained in the time, because their operations do not perform efficiently and therefore do not allow them to grow in the market. Throughout this research was taken as reference to several authors in administrative subjects that allow to develop the theoretical framework, which serves as a basis to propose the proposal of corporate management model for a family business in business of public transportation in Lima. In addition, as part of the analysis of the sector, studies and informative data were consulted by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the sector regulator, to have an accurate view of the area, as well as to observe the situation of public transport in the city and how they operate now. As for the company, the research group had contact with the general manager of San Antonio Company., which meets the fundamental characteristics for the development of the work. Finally, the project concludes that the company needs to carry out a proper corporate management, so it could take into account the proposed proposal with the aim of being able to be sustained over time and differentiate itself from the competition. / Trabajo de Suficiencia Profesional
