Musikfestivaler som turistiskt dragplåster : en fallstudie på Sweden Rock Festival / Music Festivals as a Touristic Draw : a case study on Sweden Rock Festival

Koski, Carina January 2009 (has links)
Lately, more and more music festivals have emerged in Sweden. People’s desire and need to visit these events only seems to increase. Cultural tourism and music tourism has developed into a significant and important part of the experience industry and it employs more and more people within the tourism industry. The purpose of this paper is to investigate which effects this can have on the local community. Focus is held on the touristic and economic impact on the nearby municipality and region. The paper is based on a case study on Sweden Rock Festival, which is one of Swedens largest music festivals with a heavy-metal direction. Sweden Rock Festival is located in the south of Sweden in a small municipality called Sölvesborg. Sölvesborg has about 17 000 inhabitants and each year some 33 200 festival visitors decend on the area to attend the festival. To investigate the touristic and economic impact that Sweden Rock Festival has on Sölvesborg, interviews have been conducted. These interviews have been done by either telephone or by e-mail with people from the municipality, the Sweden Rock Festival organization and people with connections to the local business life. Also, two experienced festival attenders have been interviewed to investigate the visitors use of the area’s supply of tourism attractions besides Sweden Rock Festival. The study has shown that Sweden Rock Festival has contributed to putting Sölvesborg on the touristic map and increased the awareness and knowledge about the area. New camping sites and restaurants have opened and many companies benefits on the vistitors that Sweden Rock Festival attracts. The tourism- and travel industry on the destination has increased its sales and more job opportunities have been created. As a conclusion, the study shows that it can be viewed as a good idea to use music festivals as a means to increase a destinations touristic and economic value.

A History of the Knokke / Brussels International Experimental Film Festival (1949-1974)

García Bardón, Xavier 01 December 2017 (has links)
EXPRMNTL was probably the most important event ever devoted to experimental cinema. Designed and organized by Jacques Ledoux and the Royal Belgian Film Archives, the festival of Knokke / Brussels, which only had five editions (1949, 1958, 1963, 1967, 1974) now enjoys a mythical status. This unique and unclassifiable initiative was more than just a film festival: a meeting point for avant-garde culture and contemporary thinking, an event placed under the sign of the unexpected, desire and protest, including that of the festival itself. In short: an event so consistent with its object that it was in itself an experience. This research traces the history of the five editions of the festival. It is based on the hitherto unexplored archives of the event, the reports published in the press at the time and many interviews with protagonists and witnesses.

The growth, development and impact of the Grahamstown Festival of the Arts with special reference to music

Silva, Jane Susan January 1998 (has links)
The Grahamstown Festival has become a huge and complex annual celebration of the arts, transforming the small Eastern Cape city for ten days every year. However this event had very modest beginnings, as did music and festivals in the city of Grahamstown. From its early days Grahamstown showed strong signs of becoming an important cultural centre, presenting numerous musical concerts from 1812, the festival tradition in the city beginning in 1887. The modern arts festival, initiated in 1971, had a chequered history during the early and mid 1970's, weathering economic recession, petrol restrictions and a repressive and restrictive political atmosphere. However by 1979 the event had become established and popular enough to ensure continued success during the 1980's. The period 1980-89 was one of great growth and development for the festival regarding attendance, and the number and nature of productions presented. Music had always been an integral part of the festival, and for the first time its role in this artistic celebration is being examined. The impact of such an event is varied and far-reaching, and thus difficult to assess, but the thesis ends with an attempt to gauge the Festival's impact.

Towards more accurate measurement of the value of the arts to society: economic impact and willingness to pay studies at the Standard Bank National Arts Festival

Snowball, Jen January 2001 (has links)
The accurate measurement of the value of the arts to society is becoming increasingly important in developing countries, like South Africa, where the arts must compete with housing, health, education and the like for public funds. Motivation for the public funding of arts events, like the Standard Bank National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, is usually based on the economic impact, that is, the financial benefits to the region, of such events. The argument is problematic, however, because the primary recipients of such economic benefits are often middle to upper income groups who also attend more arts performances. Furthermore, the studies have not taken into account the positive externalities which, it is argued, are generated by the arts and are enjoyed by attenders and non attenders alike. This thesis argues that it is the social benefits which the arts provide, those external to the market, which should be the basis of public funding. In order to quantify these positive externalities, a willingness to pay (WTP) study was conducted in the Grahamstown region. It is generally, but erroneously, believed that the Festival does not benefit the poorer, largely black, Grahamstown East residents. The study found that, in addition to the economic value (R23 - 25 million a year), the non-market benefits which the festival provides are worth between R2.3 and R3 million a year and form a very important part of its value, particularly to low income groups. The study also found that there are methodological adjustments which can be made to WTP studies to successfully control for the many forms of bias it is prone to. By using a combination of closed and open ended and liable and non-liable questions, the motivation of respondents' answers to WTP questions was determined, making it possible to adjust for bias caused by, for example, "free rider" and "warm glow" responses. It is argued that by identifying and excluding such responses from WTP surveys, it is possible to reduce bias to an acceptable level.

Filmové festivaly ve vztahu k okrajovým částem kinematografie. / Film festivals in relation to the margins of cinema

Slováková, Andrea January 2016 (has links)

Le documentaire en Chine (1905-2017) : entre autonomie artistique et enjeux politiques / Documentary in China (1905-2017) : between artistic autonomy and political concerns

Lichaa, Flora 07 December 2017 (has links)
This thesis proposes to explore the political, aesthetic and ethical issues of documentary in China. Based on a historical research from the birth of Chinese cinema in 1905 to the end of the Maoist era in 1976, I show that documentary was progressively subjected to politics, supporting the construction of a modern nation. Thus, aesthetics could not free itself from politics before the reform of the economic system in the 1980s. From that period onwards, I analyze the strategies adopted by filmmakers to free themselves from their ideological straitjacket, based on field surveys and film analyzes. While television has first enabled the re-evaluation of documentary to promote its diffusion, I show that the strengthening of censorship, following the student protests of 1989, has encouraged some documentary filmmakers to create production and diffusion channels independent from the audiovisual sector. The analysis of this network's organization mode reveals the mechanisms of professional recognition, that lead the filmmakers to develop their activities in the Chinese private sector, while seeking to exist on the international scene. This structural autonomy allows them to develop an ethics aimed at guaranteeing their proximity with the people filmed, who usually belong to the lower classes. However, the interference of the Chinese authorities only allows their films to be shown in festivals which have low visibility in the public space. As they are part of a marginalized space, frequented mainly by artists and intellectuals, their egalitarian aim is hampered by the impossibility of reconnecting with the Chinese audience. This paradox suggests the difficulty of establishing a constructive dialogue between documentary filmmakers and the audience, as long as the Chinese State does not allow the formation of a public sphere, functioning independently of political institutions, bringing together filmmakers, critics and audience members into a concrete community.
