Financial Problems as Predictors of Divorce: A Social Exchange Perspective

Anderson, Jan D. 01 May 2000 (has links)
By using a conceptual framework derived from social exchange theory, this study examined the relationship between financial problems and divorce. Nationally representative data from the " Maritallnstability Over the Life Course" panel study was used to determine if financial problems reported at one interview could predict those who would divorce by the subsequent interview. A self-replicating design allowed data analyses for three separate time periods: 1980-1983 , 1983- 1988, and 1988-1992. The sample used in this study consisted of l ,620 married men and women under the age of 55. Additionally, the participants were in their first marriages. Divorce was the only dependent variable. The independent variables included eight financial problems: (a) husband's job interferes with family life, (b) husband 's job satisfaction, (c) wife's job satisfaction, (d) wife's work preference, (e) satisfaction with spouse as breadwinner, (f) satisfaction with financial situation, (g) spending money foolishly/unwisely, and (h) financial situation getting better or worse. Additionally, total number of financial problems, age at marriage, gender, income, and presence of children under age 6 were used as independent variables in the analyses. Bivariate correlation and discriminant analysis procedures were used to analyze the data. The results indicated statistically significant relationships between financial problems and divorce for all independent variables except wife's job satisfaction, gender, and income. However, none of the independent variables (singularly or in combination) explained more than 5% of the variance in divorce;·financial problems were inadequate predictors of divorce. Although the results of this investigation did not provide substantive support for the popular belief that money problems are a major cause of divorce, this research filled a gap in the divorce literature, posited a clearer definition of financial problems, and provided a more complete conceptual model of the relationships between marital problems and divorce. Finally, the unanswered questions raised by this study indicate the need for continued investigation of the impact that financial issues have on marital relationships.

Materialism, Perceived Financial Problems, and Marital Satisfaction

Dean, Lukas R. 11 July 2005 (has links) (PDF)
While there has been a relatively large number of studies conducted to investigate associations between financial problems and marital outcomes, little research has been done to examine possible relationships between materialistic attitudes, perceived financial problems, and marital outcomes. This study has been designed to examine a conceptual model linking materialism, perceived financial problems, and relationship satisfaction among married couples. Data obtained from 600 married heterosexual couples who took the RELATE test fit the model well. Findings indicate that wives' materialism is negatively related to husbands' marital satisfaction. Husbands' and wives' materialism is positively related with increased perception of financial problems which is in turn negatively associated with marital satisfaction. As expected, income was positively related to marital satisfaction, however, income had no relation to perception of financial problems. Materialism had a stronger impact on perception of financial problems than income. Distinct gender findings indicate that although husbands' variables had no significant relation with wives' outcomes, wives' variables were significantly related to husbands' outcomes. Specifically, wives' materialism is positively related with husbands' increased perception of financial problems, and wives' perceived financial problems is negatively associated with husbands' marital satisfaction. These findings support the notion that materialism is indirectly related to marital satisfaction, and in some ways directly related to marital satisfaction.

Coping with Underdepreciation in the Electric Utility Industry

Haywood, Dale 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine a two-part hypothesis. The first part is that underdepreciation is the cause of serious financial problems which have beset investor-owned electric utilities in recent years. The second part is that depreciation adjusted for changes in the general level of prices would do much to alleviate these problems.

The nature and effects of financial problems on employees in the office of the premier, Limpopo Province

Raphahlelo, Morubula Constance 16 November 2006 (has links)
Financial problems have become a serious problem that enjoys high priority within the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) in the Office of the Premier, Limpopo Province. It is a major concern shared by management and staff, as it continuously impact negatively on job performance due to absenteeism and the low morale of employees. The researcher became motivated to undertake this research study due to her practical and professional experience as an EAP Practitioner within the Office of the Premier. It has been observed and established by the researcher during her professional working career that financial problems are at the top of the list in terms of statistics of cases handled within the EAP Office. Furthermore, no prior study was done that could determine the nature of the problem. This situation therefore triggered the researcher to conduct a study that will determine the nature of the problem. The aim of this study is to explore the nature and effects of financial problems on employees in the Office of the Premier, Limpopo Province. In conducting this study, the researcher followed a qualitative research approach in order to elicit the views and opinions of the respondents regarding the nature and effects of financial problems. The semi structured one-to-one interview schedule was used in order to gather the data. A total of nine (9) respondents, obtained from the database of statistical records in the EAP Office, were interviewed. A purposive sampling method was used to select the sample of nine respondents from a population of eighteen (18). The researcher selected those respondents with two or more garnishee orders or loans. A theoretical discussion focusing on: the nature of financial problems as a common phenomenon, the causes of financial problems, the symptoms of financial problems, the effects of financial problems on employees, as well as guidelines on how to assist troubled employees will be presented in Chapter two. The research findings indicated that there seems to be a positive relationship between financial planning and financial problems. Few respondents believed that financial problems could result from poor financial planning. The findings further revealed that other social factors such as: overwhelming parental responsibilities of raising offsprings, loss of income by a spouse, high financial demands placed upon single parents and the rapid increase of inflation contribute towards financial difficulties. The effects of financial problems can be devastating since it impacts negatively on employees’ psychological and physical well-being. Thus, job performance suffers. / Dissertation (MSW)--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Social Work and Criminology / Unrestricted

Title: Crisis management and the solution of a bankruptcy of a profitable sports club Objectives: The main objective of this thesis is to propose general procedures of profitable sports clubs dealing with crisis and bankruptcy. Methods: This thesis is based on a qualitative research. Documents related to insolvency were analyzed, specifically act No. 182/2006 Coll., The Act of Bankruptcy and Ways of its Resolution (The Insolvency Act), as amended by subsequent regulations and publicly accessible insolvency proceedings in the insolvency register. Qualitative interviews with insolvency law specialists have been executed using the manual to make sure the thesis results are objective. Results: A general manual for entrepreneurs in profitable sports facilities was compiled by the analysis of necessary documents and based on the The Insolvency Act. The manual serves for times when a sports facility gets into financial problems resulting in insolvency proceedings. In some cases, an insolvency proposition has to be submitted, with regard to a potential responsibility of the statuary authorities or people in charge of financial obligations. At the same time, it is important to proceed with the property inventory/inventorying, to create a list of receivables and liabilities, and also a property and an...

Sex-Role Stereotyping in Marital Counseling Sex- Role Style and Type of Problem Effects on Clinical Judgments

Woodruff, James Graham 05 1900 (has links)
The analogue study was designed to extend previous research on clinical sex-role stereotyping of individual clients into the realm of marital counseling. The effects of clinician and couple sex-role style and type of marital problem on clinical judgements of couples was examined through ratings of four audiotaped couples constructed from two scripts depicting either couple financial or sexual problems. Each script produced both a stereotypical and counterstereotypical sex-role styled couple through reversal of spouse verbalizations. A sample of 40 (32 male, 8 female) practicing doctorate-level psychologists rated either two stereotypical or two counterstereotypical couples for level of maladjustment, need for treatment, and prognosis. Individual spouse ratings were also obtained to examine client gender effects.

Basinkomst och psykisk hälsa : En litteraturstudie om basinkomstens påverkan på den psykiska hälsan / Basic income and mental health : A literature study on the impact of basic income on mental health

Funcke, My, Jörmar, Martina January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of this essay was to compile research on the impact basic income has on the recipients' mental health. We also wanted to examine how the introduction of basic income affected the connection between financial problems and mental health and discuss the results based on the connection between basic income, mental health and the theoretical frame of reference. The essay's research question was: How have completed trials of basic income affected the mental health of the participants? The research question was answered by a literature review in which nine articles (of which one monograph) were included, which reported results from trials of the introduction of basic income where both quantitative and qualitative studies were included. The articles and monograph were collected through searches of the Scopus, Onesearch and Social Services Abstracts databases as well as secondary searches. A qualitative content analysis was applied where three main themes: Participation and community, Autonomy and Health effects with sub-themes were identified. The experience was analyzed using the theories of empowerment and stigma and shame. The conclusion based on the purpose of the essay showed that experiments with basic income, conditional or unconditional, increased the mental health of the recipients. The sense of empowerment increased in the recipients and the results show that the recipients experienced more life satisfaction, increased participation, reduced stigma, shame and increased self-determination. This jointly contributed to the feeling of power over one's life and ability to deal with adversity.
