Work Improvement and Specificity of Training Using Stepping, Running, and Bicycling as Modes of Training and Testing

This problem was designed to evaluate the work performance change effected by each of three training programs; stepping, running, and bicycle ergometer riding. The study determined the specific work improvement of each training program by using a stress test designed from each of the training modes. Two of the purposes of the study were to determine the work performance effects and the specificity of training effect of each of the training procedures. The effect of body weight and leg strength were also measured in relation to performance, and the relative value of each of the three training procedures was evaluated. An analysis of the data showed that no training method was statistically superior to the others, but in order of improvement they ranked (1) bicycle ergometer riding, (2) stepping, and (3) running. Training by each method did appear to be specific to the type of work involved. In each method of training, the most significant improvement was in the work performance test related to that particular training procedure.

The influence of a holistic fitness programme on the development of positive attitude’s in learners at a multi-grade school

Thesis (MTech (Education))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2010. / This research investigates the influence of a 12 week holistic fitness programme on learner attitudes in three multi-grade schools in the Wellington area of the Western Cape. A sample of 38 (N= 21 males and N=17 females), grade 4 multi-grade learners participated in the study. The study also tests whether an evaluation model as applied in this research: a) Can give insight into how to develop a fitness programme and assist to refine and improve such a program; b) Assists, through evaluation and attitudinal evaluation questionnaires to identify the various components of a fitness programme that can be modified to optimise the outcomes of the programme. It was found that the structure provided by the holistic fitness programme encouraged in significant positive attitudes toward all seven sub-domains of the CATPA inventory. It is concluded that the participation in a structured fitness programme is confidently associated with the development of more positive attitudes.

Treadmill validation of the Siconolfi step test.

Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is the internationally recognized measure of a person's cardiorespiratory fitness. Currently the most accurate way of assessing one's true VO2max involves the use of maximal exercise tests, which require the use of specialized equipment, and are time consuming and costly. The purpose of this study was to determine the validity of the submaximal Siconolfi step test to estimate VO2max. A second purpose was to determine if body fat percentage improved the validity. Thirty-six individuals underwent a maximal treadmill test, in which VO2max was directly measured, and the step test. Results indicate that, although VO2max estimates generated by the Siconolfi step test are highly correlated to true VO2max (r =.887; p<.01), the values consistently underestimated a person's aerobic fitness. It was also determined that body fat percentage did not contribute to the prediction of VO2max.

Comparisons of the habitual acitvity level of selected women to performance on the Bruce multistage treadmill test and the Cooper 12 minute run test

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the Cooper 12 Minute Run test and Bruce Multistage Treadmill test measure the same type of cardiovascular-endurance performance when testing adult women. A second purpose was to determine whether divergent levels of habitual activity by women are reflected in the scores on each test. Four groups of habitual activity were defined and labeled as follows: non-exercisers, minimal exercisers, adequate exercisers, and more than adequate exercisers. Ten healthy women were selected as subjects in each group. Subjects ranged in age from 22 to 35 years and were within the normal weight range according to standard tables. Each subject was tested in accordance with the appropriate protocol on the Bruce test and on the 12 Minute Run test. When individual scores for the two tests were correlated the data seemed to indicate that they were comparable measures of cardiovascular endurance performance. (r = 0.9097) An analysis of variance among group scores was performed for each test and highly significant F ratios were obtained. (F = 24.07 Bruce; F = 20.77 12 Minute Run) The most likely reason for the differences was seen as the divergent levels of habitual activity in each group. Contrasting tests were performed among groups and various combinations of groups. All test comparisons reached significance except for the one contrasting the 12 Minute Run scores of the two groups with the lowest activity levels. It was concluded that for the population of women at various levels of habitual activity who are represented by the selected sample in this study: the Bruce Multistage Treadmill test and the Cooper 12 Minute Run test measure largely the same type of cardiovascular endurance performance and that each test appears to adequately discriminate among women of divergent levels of habitual activity except at the lowest levels.

Children's Perceptions of the FITNESSGRAM Fitness Test

FITNESSGRAM is a battery of fitness tests that assess if a child's fitness level is, according to a health standard, enough to be considered healthy. These tests include the five components of health-related fitness: aerobic endurance, muscular strength and muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition. Students are not compared to each other, but to health fitness standards specific to their age and gender that indicate good health. The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify children's perceptions of FITNESSGRAM and determine if self-administration of this fitness test provides a positive experience for the students. Specifically, this study evaluated (a) students' perceptions of FITNESSGRAM, administered in a self-testing format, (b) children's understanding of the purpose of fitness testing, and (c) what effect participation in FITNESSGRAM had on students' perceptions of their personal health. This study used questionnaires (n = 78), and follow-up individual interviews (n = 45) to identify students' perceptions of FITNESSGRAM. Results using the constant comparative method identified four main categories: (a) administration of fitness testing, (b) the purpose of fitness testing, (c) components of fitness testing, and (d) overall influence of fitness testing. Findings showed that children clearly understood the importance and role of fitness testing, felt successful and were pleased with their results, preferred doing the tests with a partner or by themselves, and thought the fitness test was fun.
