Link flow destination distribution estimation based on observed travel times for traffic prediction during incidents

Danielsson, Anna, Gustafsson, Gabriella January 2020 (has links)
In a lot of big cities, the traffic network is overloaded, with congestion and unnecessary emissions as consequence. Therefore, different traffic control methods are useful, especially in case of an incident. One key problem for traffic control is traffic prediction and the aim of this thesis is to develop, calibrate and evaluate a route flow model using only observed travel times and travel demand as input. The route flow model was used to calculate the metric link flow destination distribution, that presents to which destinations the travelers on a link are going in percentage.

Traffic State Estimation for Signalized Intersections : A Combined Gaussian Process Bayesian Filter Approach

Sederlin, Michael January 2020 (has links)
Traffic State Estimation (TSE) is a vital component in traffic control which requires an accurate viewof the current traffic situation. Since there is no full sensor coverage and the collected measurementsare inflicted with random noise, statistical estimation techniques are necessary to accomplish this.Common methods, which have been used in highway applications for several decades, are state-spacemodels in the form of Kalman Filters and Particle Filters. These methods are forms of BayesianFilters, and rely on transition models to describe the system dynamics, and observation models torelate collected measurements to the current state. Reliable estimation of traffic in urban environmentshas been considered more difficult than in highways owing to the increased complexity. This MsC thesis build upon previous research studying the use of non-parametric Gaussian Processtransition and measurement models in an extended Kalman Filter to achieve short-term TSE. To dothis, models requiring different feature sets are developed and analysed, as well as a hybrid approchcombining non-parametric and parametric models through an analytical mean function based on vehicleconservation law. The data used to train and test the models was collected in a simulated signalizedintersection constructed in SUMO.The presented results show that the proposed method has potential to performing short-term TSE inthis context. A strength in the proposed framework comes from the probabilistic nature of the GaussianProcesses, as it removes the need to manually calibrate the filter parameters of the Kalman Filter. Themean absolute error (MAE) lies between one and five vehicles for estimation of a one hour long dataseries with varying traffic demand. More importantly, the method has desirable characteristics andcaptures short-term fluctuations as well as larger scale demand changes better than a previously proposedmodel using the same underlying framework. In the cases with poorer performance, the methodprovided estimates unrelated to the system dynamics as well as large error bounds. While the causefor this was not determined, several hypotheses are presented and analysed. These results are takento imply that the combination of BF and GP models has potential for short-term TSE in a signalizedintersection, but that more work is necessary to provide reliable algorithms with known bounds. In particular, the relative ease of augmenting an available analytical model, built on conventional knowledgein traffic modelling, with a non-parametric GP is highlighted.

Inside-pipe heat transfer coefficient characterisation of a one third height scale model of a natural circulation loop suitable for a reactor cavity cooling system of the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor

Sittmann, Ilse 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The feasibility of a closed loop thermosyphon for the Reactor Cavity Cooling System of the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor has been the subject of many research projects. Difficulties identified by previous studies include the hypothetical inaccuracies of heat transfer coefficient correlations available in literature. The aim of the research presented here is to develop inside-pipe heat transfer correlations that are specific to the current design of the RCCS. In order to achieve this, a literature review is performed which identifies reactors which employ closed loop thermosyphons and natural circulation. The literature review also explains the general one-dimensional two-fluid conservation equations that form the basis for numerical modelling of natural circulation loops. The literature review lastly discusses available heat transfer coefficient correlations with the aim of identifying over which ranges and under which circumstances these correlations are considered accurate. The review includes correlations commonly used in natural circulation modelling in the nuclear industry in aims of identifying correlations applicable to the modelling of the proposed RCCS. One of the objectives of this project is to design and build a one-third-height-scale model of the RCCS. Shortcomings of previous experimental models were assessed and, as far as possible, compensated for in the design of the model. Copper piping is used, eliminating material and surface property uncertainties. Several sight glasses are incorporated in the model, allowing for the visual identification of two-phase flow regimes. An orifice plate is used allowing for bidirectional flow measurement. The orifice plate, thermocouples and pipe-in-pipe heat exchangers are calibrated in-situ to minimize experimental error and aid repeatability. Twelve experiments are performed with data logging occurring every ten seconds. The results presented here are limited to selected single and two-phase flow operating mode results. Error analyses and repeatability of experimental measurements for single and two-phase operating modes as well as cooling water mass flow rates are performed, to show repeatability of experimental results. These results are used to mathematically determine the experimental inside-pipe heat transfer coefficients for both the evaporator and condenser sections. Trends in the heat transfer coefficient profiles are identified and the general behaviour of the profiles is thoroughly explained. The RCCS is modelled as a one-dimensional system. Correlations for the friction factor, heat transfer coefficient, void fraction and two-phase frictional multiplier are identified. The theoretical heat transfer coefficients are calculated using the mathematical model and correlations identified in the literature review. Fluid parameters are evaluated using experimentally determined temperatures and mass flow rates. The resulting heat transfer coefficient profiles are compared to experimentally determined profiles, to confirm the hypothesis that existing correlations do not accurately predict the inside-pipe heat transfer coefficients. The experimentally determined coefficients are correlated to 99% confidence intervals. These generated correlations, along with identified and established twophase heat transfer coefficient correlations, are used in a mathematical model to generate theoretical coefficient profiles. These are compared to the experimentally determined coefficients to show prediction accuracy.

A framework for modelling embodied product energy to support energy efficient manufacturing

Seow, Yingying January 2011 (has links)
This thesis reports on the research undertaken to minimise energy consumption within the production phase of a product lifecycle through modelling, monitoring and improved control of energy use within manufacturing facilities. The principle objective of this research is to develop a framework which integrates energy data at plant and process levels within a manufacturing system so as to establish how much energy is required to manufacture a unit product. The research contributions are divided into four major parts. The first reviews relevant literature in energy trends, related governmental policies, and energy tools and software. The second introduces an Embodied Product Energy framework which categorises energy consumption within a production facility into direct and indirect energy required to manufacture a product. The third describes the design and implementation of a simulation model based on this framework to support manufacturing and design decisions for improved energy efficiency through the use of what-if scenario planning. The final part outlines the utilisation of this energy simulation model to support a Design for Energy Minimisation methodology which incorporates energy considerations within the design process. The applicability of the research concepts have been demonstrated via two case studies. The detailed analysis of energy consumption from a product viewpoint provides greater insight into inefficiencies of processes and associated supporting activities, thereby highlighting opportunities for optimisation of energy consumption via operational or design improvements. Although the research domain for this thesis is limited to the production phase, the flexibility offered by the energy modelling framework and associated simulation tool allow for their employment other product lifecycle phases. In summary, the research has concluded that investment in green sources of power generation alone is insufficient to deal with the rapid rise in energy demand, and has highlighted the paramount importance of energy rationalisation and optimisation within the manufacturing industry.

Computational workflow management for conceptual design of complex systems : an air-vehicle design perspective

Balachandran, Libish Kalathil January 2007 (has links)
The decisions taken during the aircraft conceptual design stage are of paramount importance since these commit up to eighty percent of the product life cycle costs. Thus in order to obtain a sound baseline which can then be passed on to the subsequent design phases, various studies ought to be carried out during this stage. These include trade-off analysis and multidisciplinary optimisation performed on computational processes assembled from hundreds of relatively simple mathematical models describing the underlying physics and other relevant characteristics of the aircraft. However, the growing complexity of aircraft design in recent years has prompted engineers to substitute the conventional algebraic equations with compiled software programs (referred to as models in this thesis) which still retain the mathematical models, but allow for a controlled expansion and manipulation of the computational system. This tendency has posed the research question of how to dynamically assemble and solve a system of non-linear models. In this context, the objective of the present research has been to develop methods which significantly increase the flexibility and efficiency with which the designer is able to operate on large scale computational multidisciplinary systems at the conceptual design stage. In order to achieve this objective a novel computational process modelling method has been developed for generating computational plans for a system of non-linear models. The computational process modelling was subdivided into variable flow modelling, decomposition and sequencing. A novel method named Incidence Matrix Method (IMM) was developed for variable flow modelling, which is the process of identifying the data flow between the models based on a given set of input variables. This method has the advantage of rapidly producing feasible variable flow models, for a system of models with multiple outputs. In addition, criteria were derived for choosing the optimal variable flow model which would lead to faster convergence of the system. Cont/d.

Modeling Of Liquid Flow In A Packed Bed Under Influence Of Gas Flow

Singh, Vikrant 09 1900 (has links)
The aim of the current study is to model (non-wetting) liquid flow in a packed bed under the influence of gas flow. It has been observed experimentally that non-wetting liquid flows in a packed bed in form of small droplets and rivulets falling through the void regions. Continuum models have not been successful in predicting liquid flow paths when the liquid is injected through a point source in the packed bed. In the current study, we present a discrete deterministic model for modeling the liquid flow in a packed bed, under the influence of gas flow. When a high velocity gas blast in injected into a dry packed bed, a cavity or a void is formed in front of the nozzle. The cavity size increases with increasing gas velocity and exhibits hystersis in size upon increasing and decreasing gas flow rate. The cavity size is very important in determining the gas penetration into the packed bed. A proper gas flow profile prediction is necessary for determining it’s effect on the liquid flow behavior. Attempts at modeling cavity sizes have mostly been confined to experimental studies and development of correlations. Different correlations show different dependence on operating as well as bed parameters and a fundamental understanding of the cavity formation and hystersis phenomena is missing. We adopt a combined Eulerean-Lagrangian approach to study the above mentioned phenomena mathematically. Gas is modeled as a continua and solid as discrete (soft sphere D.E.M. approach). Hystersis and cavity formation studies are carried out in a 2D-slot rectangular packed bed. A discrete deterministic liquid flow model (developed and validated under structured packing conditions using x-ray radiography flow visualization technique), is used to study the effect of presence of liquid on the dry bed void size, when liquid is injected in a packed bed through a point source. It is found that the gas pushes the liquid away from the nozzle side wall. Also, the cavity sizes during gas velocity decreasing case are found to be larger in size than the void size obtained during velocity increasing case for the same inlet gas flow rate. This difference is void size leads to more gas penetration into the bed and thus more liquid shift away from the nozzle side wall. Presence of liquid is found to affect the void size (compared to dry bed size) negligibly.

Improved mapping of steel recycling from an industrial perspective

Gauffin, Alicia January 2015 (has links)
The results from this study show that it is possible to obtain data series on the steel scrap collection based on mass balance model on the crude steel production figures by steelmaking reactor type and additional knowledge on process metallurgy as well as information on inputs and outputs into the reactors with an area correlation coefficient of 0,91 compared to data obtained from trade statistics. Furthermore, the study shows that based on a new method it is possible to calculate the time duration of mass flows on a continuous basis. Furthermore, two complementary statistical dynamic material flow models that can be used to calculate the societal recycling rates of steel was constructed. These statistical models contribute to a standardized way of obtaining consistent results. The new models are able to segregate the non-recirculated amounts of steel into the hibernating steel stock available for future collection from the amounts of losses based on statistics. The results show that it is possible to calculate the amounts of steel scrap available for steelmaking at a given point in time. In addition, based on the new models it is possible to calculate recycling trends in society. Also, the models are able to calculate robust forecasts on the long-term availability of steel scrap, and test if forecast demand of steel scrap exceeds a full recovery. This due to that the steel scrap generation is a function of the collection rate of steel scrap. Also, a method for obtaining representative samplings on the alloy content in steel scrap called random sampling analysis (RSA) was developed. The results from the RSA show that it is possible to optimize the recovery of valuable elements in the production process of steelmaking based on the information on the composition of steel scrap. / <p>QC 20151020</p>

Miclo, Romain 07 December 2016 (has links)
The main Supply Chain current issues concern the adaptation to unstable environments. Demand Driven Material Requirements Planning (DDMRP) is a recent and promising material management method that is designed to tackle these current issues. The research work details and classifies DDMRP compared to the other material management methods known. The goal of this work is to challenge the main DDMRP promises. This is why a design of experiments was realised on a case study in order to assess MRP II, Kanban and DDMRP behaviours with different variability sources. The DDMRP buffer sizing is a major issue. It was dealt with an optimisation work on a case study. All the contributions were experimented with a DDMRP implementation on a real case. The research work enables several DDMRP advantages to be validated, such as the system adjustment to different variability sources, however this work also allows research perspectives to be underlined.

Modellering av flöden och syrgasförhållanden i Dannemorasjön och dess tillrinningsområde / Modelling water flow and oxygen content in Lake Dannemorasjön and its catchment area

Stenius, Seija January 2007 (has links)
The hydrological system in the catchment area of Lake Dannemorasjön, in the northern part of Uppland, is very complicated and has been changed many times by human activities. The water level of many lakes in the area has been lowered at several occasions. Most of these operations have been made in order to prevent leakage from Lake Gruvsjön to the mine in Dannemora. Already in the 17th century many of the wetlands were dammed up to be used as water storage for water power production. The power was needed for the mine and iron production in the area. Many lakes have also for a long time been used as recipients for waste water. The oxygen content in the lakes and rivers in the area has frequently been reported as very low, especially in Lake Dannemorasjön, Lake Harvikadammen and the River Sundbroån. The aim of this study is to describe the hydrology in the catchment area of Lake Dannemorasjön, compile facts about the regulated spillways of the reservoirs and water regulation vertictsand to work out a plan for changing the water regime in order to increase the oxygen content in Lake Dannemorasjön during winter. A model that simulates the flow of water within the catchment and to Lake Dannemorasjön was developed. Another model that simulates the oxygen content in Lake Dannemorasjön during ice covered conditions was attached to the waterflow model. The results from the model show that a change in the regulation of the flow to Lake Dannemorasjön can increase the oxygen content in the lake. A prerequisite for the new regulation to be effective is that the storage capacity of Lake Harvikadammen is increased or that additional water is supplied to the dam, for instance by pumping water from Lake Dannemorasjön. It is also clear from the study that a raised water level of the lake would affect the oxygen content in a positive way. The oxygen problem becomes particularly serious during cold Winters with a long lasting ice cover. During such Winters it is not enough with just one measure to prevent oxygen deficit, several different kinds of measures must be undertaken in order to make sure that the oxygen content stays at a reasonably level.
