Acknowledging cultural values and diversities when teaching English as a foreign language to adult learners in Qatar

Rousseau, Riana 06 1900 (has links)
The study of a foreign language can never be seen in isolation, but forms part of the social and cultural setting in which it functions. Therefore, teaching English to multicultural groups of adults in Qatar, cannot be done effectively and efficiently, without taking the influence of cultural diversities and values, as well as the requirements of the adult learner, into account. This research deals with how native English speaking lecturers at one specific language centre in Qatar acknowledge these cultural diversities and values and how they accommodate adult learners in the multicultural classroom environment, by means of a literature study and an empirical investigation. Qualitative data collection was done by open-ended questionnaires to lecturers and learners, focus group interviews with lecturers and learners, individual interviews with lecturers, classroom observations and keeping of field notes. Findings revealed that lecturers are aware of the cultural diversities and values of learners who come into the classroom from different nationalities, and accommodated these learners without bias. These differences however, did not necessarily influence their teaching styles and lecturers remained focussed on teaching English as effectively as possible. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. Oral Feedback in the English Classroom : Teachers' Thoughts and Awareness

Rydahl, Susanna January 2006 (has links)
<p>The main aim of this paper was to find out if and how teachers in upper secondary school use oral feedback when they correct their students' oral mistakes. I also wanted to find out which approach the teachers find most useful and if they use different approaches depending on the error made by the student.</p><p>I have found that the majority of the teachers find oral feedback as an important tool to help students achieve a higher proficiency in a second and foreign language. My results also show that feedback is most often used when the student makes errors regarding content and pronunciation. Most of my respondents are aware of the necessity of applying different feedback approaches to different errors made by the students. My investigation shows that teachers chose to give feedback on different occasions, both directly, but more commonly, indirectly, to a single student or later on to a full class. Most teachers also prefer a mix of feedback approaches depending on the specific student and situation.</p><p>My intention with this study has also been to determine what factors influence the students' uptake. My respondents have, among several factors, stressed the importance of comfortable learning situations, students' personal interest and size of group.</p>

Authenticity in Foreigner Language Teaching: A Case Study in Task-based Activities in Current Textbooks

WuChiu-hui Unknown Date (has links)
Authenticity has been regarded as one of the essential principles in EFL/ESL teaching. It is emphasized that the content of the textbooks can realistically reflect the genuine meaning and function of the language used in real-life situations. Aside from the authenticity of text itself, more and more teachers and educators recognize the value of using authentic activities for teaching and learning purposes. The thesis aims to examine whether and how the language learning activities in our EFL textbooks pertain to authenticity. We explore what authentic learning activities in these textbooks are, and how they are different as found in different textbooks. By following a rating scale developed on the basis of Littlewood’s (2004) five activity types (non-communicative learning, pre-communicative language practice, communicative language practice, structured communication and authentic communication), we evaluate and compare the language learning activities provided in five sets of English textbooks frequently used in Taiwan in terms of their task authenticity. The result of our analysis reveals that most language learning activities in the five commonly used sets of English textbooks are designed mainly for the practice of the linguistic forms. Few of the activities provide learners with the chance of exposure to real communication situations and applying their language skills in authentic ways. Even some of the textbook series don’t contain any authentic learning activities at all. It is clear that textbook writing in Taiwan still focuses on linguistic forms – a situation that has lasted for decades and more changes in textbook writing are needed in order to move forward to genuine communication.

Možnosti a meze využití metody CLIL v českých školách / Possibilities and boundaries of using CLIL method in Czech schools

Němečková, Markéta January 2014 (has links)
The diploma thesis deals with an innovative method CLIL, which combines the teaching of subject matter with the teaching of a foreign language. The aim of the work is to use action research to verify the possibilities of applying CLIL in first class of chosen state primary school. The action research is a suitable tool to implement a new approach and contributes to improvement of the quality of teaching. The research is focused on the verification of different supporting strategies to create a set of functional scaffolding techniques, which help first graders to overcome the language barriers and achieve the learning objectives. The core of this thesis consists of detailed lesson plans and reflections, in which the used activities and scaffolding are analysed in terms of efficiency. The final part of the thesis includes several recommendations for practice from the perspective of the possibilities and boundaries of using CLIL method in Czech state schools. The research confirmed that the language level of pupils is not a necessary condition of teaching through CLIL and therefore it is possible to use CLIL from first class of primary school. Keywords: foreign language teaching, Content and Language Integrated Learning, action research, foreign language across the curriculum, innovative method.

Tlumočnické aktivity ve výuce cizích jazyků / Interpreting activities in Foreign Language Teaching

Dohnalová, Karolina January 2014 (has links)
(in English): The thesis describes how has translation been used in foreign language teaching, which is closely associated with the attitude towards the use of a first language during a second language lesson. In particular, it focuses on translation exercises that use interpreting as the main objective, and pre-translation exercises that use individual skills needed during the interpreting process. The aim of the present work is to demonstrate that these methods can be useful in different types and levels of courses (interpreting as a method) and it does not have to be limited on the education of future interpreters (interpreting as the main objective). The practical part outlines the current situation in some institution in Prague which specialize in adult teaching.

Reflektování potřeb žáků se specifickými poruchami učení ve výuce anglického jazyka jako jazyka cizího / Reflecting the Needs of the Students with Specific Learning Disabilities in TEFL

Stehlíková, Hana January 2015 (has links)
The specific learning disabilities with the primary focus on dyslexia as one of the special educational need are characterised in the thesis. The theoretical part provides thorough clarification of the individual disabilities as well as the enumeration and explanation of the re- educational approaches towards the specific learning difficulties aimed at the process of teaching English as a foreign language. The qualitative research conducted on the second stage of the basic school constitutes the empirical part of the thesis. The major aim of tracing the needs of the learners with dyslexia was achieved by combining the results of the analysis of the textbooks and the self-created worksheets, observations from the lessons and the interviews with the participants. The main research question, discussing the degree of appropriateness and suitability of the created material in opposition to the regularly used textbooks, was answered in favour of the designed worksheets. Moreover, the thesis provides well-structured and comprehensive summary of the recommendations to enhance the learning process of the learners with dyslexia. Key words Dyslexia, foreign language teaching, lower secondary level, re-education, special educational needs, specific learning disabilities

Candido, Juliana. January 2010 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: This research study aimed at investigating the foreign language teacher‟s pre-service education in a teletandem‟s laboratory context. Specifically, it focuses on four aspects in the foreign language teacher‟s pre-service education: counseling, mediation, reflection and learning in teletandem. This study discusses, through a new technological resource, the Adobe® Acrobat® Connect™ Pro, the counseling, mediation and the reflection by the pre-service students from a state university in São Paulo state, inside a teletandem laboratory. In this laboratory, the undergraduate foreigner teachers, called at this study of counselor-students, provide theoretical and technological counseling sessions to the freshman students in the thematic project named Teletandem Brasil: língua estrangeira para todos, in other words, for those students who have not started their foreign language learning in teletandem process yet. Therefore, this research is basically constituted by three stages: i) observation of the face to face counseling sessions given by the counselor-students in the laboratory; ii) reading, reflection and analysis of the reflective diaries of the counselor-students about these face to face counseling sessions and iii) realization of the online mediation sessions with the counselor-students through the Adobe® Acrobat® Connect™ Pro. The interest to achieve this research arose by the needs and concerns within my experience as an undergraduate foreign language teacher, in other words, as a teacher in a pre-service education lacking more counseling and reflection of the nature that this new context of teaching and learning languages in-tandem can provide. Thus, the study aimed to investigate what are the possible impacts of the counseling sessions‟ experience, given by the... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Análise e exploração de marcadores discursivos no ensino de português-língua estrangeira (PLE) no Brasil / Analysis and exploration of discourse markers in the teaching of portuguese as a foreign language (PFL) in Brazil

Silva, Sérgio Duarte Julião da 11 November 2010 (has links)
A great deal of our sense of social order stems from conversation, which in turn has its own order and works according to its own rules of structure. As they interact through conversation, people resort to regular procedures to produce explicit marks of discourse planning along with strategies for managing turn-taking, established relationships and oral interaction itself. Therefore, language should not be considered merely as a communication code, but rather a means through which subjects can play an active role while manifesting their ideas about the real world and their own inner world, and expressing their social roles and personality within a given framework. These subjects also engage in metalinguistic mechanisms to create cohesion and coherence relationships as oral language refers to itself in discourse. Discourse markers play a fundamental role in this process because they enable subjects to act and manifest their own selves while producing utterances. However, a close look at the materials currently used for teaching Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL) will show that the conversation instances to which PFL students are exposed seldom use these elements and processes so typical of oral interaction. As opposed to other foreign language materials such as English, Spanish and French, PFL materials tend to insist on forms that reflect educated written Portuguese syntax. As a result, PFL material fail to provide foreigners with useful tools to interact with Portuguese speakers in real conversation. This paper highlights the importance of exploring conversation in foreign language teaching on the basis of Conversation Analysis theories. It also suggests four levels in which discourse markers can be explored in order to enable PFL students to build up effective communicative and sociocultural competence.

Textos literários no ensino de português-língua estrangeira (PLE) no Brasil / The literary texts in the teaching of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL) in Brazil

Takahashi, Neide Tomiko 25 June 2008 (has links)
The objective of this paper is to study the employment of the literary texts and how they are exploited in the teaching of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL). For that purpose, we followed the theoretical line of the communicative approach of reading and utterance-act in order to inspect the pedagogical potential of the literary text in the classroom and in PFL\'s textbooks. In a survey involving foreign students, we were able to detect their expectations in relation to the application of texts of the Brazilian literature in the classes, as well as their linguistic representations, including the appropriation of cultural elements, confirming the relevant contribution of these texts in PFL\'s teaching. And, after analysing the employment of the literary texts and the exercises of comprehension in four types of textbooks, we observed that these books are not able to fill all the students\' expectations due to the own educational nature of these materials, decontextualized from the original authortext- reader interaction. As a result, we were able to confirm that the effective utilization of the literary texts in PFL\'s teaching does not merely depend on its employment as an excuse in the classroom or in the manuals, but on the treatment given to them, in view of their literary quality.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Lucilene Santos Silva Fonseca.pdf: 22240332 bytes, checksum: 6b30013c834bbeef9ca840e368c140c9 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-07-30 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The overall objective of this research is to investigate the agency of an undergraduate student of the Faculty of Language and Arts in Spanish language, along her work in the discipline Practice of Foreign Language Teaching (FL), permeated by the actions of the teacherresearcher in a university located in a city of the metropolitan area of São Paulo. We have perceived that many of these students, after completing graduation, start teaching classes in elementary and high schools without the practical experience of teaching a foreign language (LE). This problem motivated the following specific objectives with this focus: (1) identify language features that enable us to understand the agency of the participant; (2) identify how the proposals of the discipline enable the development of the agency of the participant; (3) analyze the type of agency revealed in the development of the participant. The theoretical and methodological choice in constructing contexts of comprehension, reflection and transformation, with respect to the teaching and learning of languages and the role of language in these contexts is endorsed by the Critical Collaboration Research (MAGALHÃES, 2010). This theoretical framework is based on the Theory of Socio- Historical-Cultural Activity (VYGOTSKI, 1934/1998, 1930/1999; LEONTIEV, 1978; ENGESTRÖM, 2001), focusing on the concepts of teaching and learning and development, mediation and Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) as a socio-cultural-historical space of coming to be, in which language organizes a collaborative-critical relationship between the participants. Data has been collected aiming to recover and understand the agency of the work done by the undergraduate student during the discipline Foreign Language Teaching Practice. First we selected thrirteen (13) texts done by the undergraduate student through her activities as a teacher in pre-service. This work is justified for collaborating with discussions about Faculty undergraduate courses with degree in Foreign Languages (FL) and the agency's role in the development of the discipline Teaching Practice of FL. This work integrates CNPq, Contradiction and Collaboration Research, led by PHD. Professor Maria Cecilia Magalhães Camargo of the da PUC-SP University which aims to investigate ways of questioning, presenting, countering arguments that constitute activities of school context, with emphasis on teacher training, such as reproductive and/or creative productions of meaning for proposing a research framework and organization of these activities in more creative perspectives.
