Narrating the Literate Identities of Five Ninth Grade Boys on the School Landscape

Rice, Mary Frances 17 June 2010 (has links) (PDF)
I conducted a narrative inquiry with five ninth grade boys in my English class that I identified as displaying multiple literacies. The classes I taught the boys in were two sections of honors ninth grade English. The boys came from a variety of backgrounds and lived in various neighborhoods in the approximately 20,0000-member community where we all live. The site of this research was the junior high school in Utah where the boys attend school and I had been employed for six years. After the research was collected, I conducted several negotiation sessions with the boys and their parents at the school, as well as in their homes. These negotiations facilitated a methodological concept I came to call distillation, which is an interim step for determining which narratives in an inquiry are emblematic. My research centered on how these boys storied their literate identities. A review of literature revealed several lenses for conceptualizing the stories of these boys. An analysis of the stories I collected revealed that the boys' stories moved beyond current conceptions of either identity or literacy alone and instead offered a way of looking at literate identity as simultaneously being and doing literacy. In light of this definition, the boys' stories revealed plotlines that together described literate identity as a form of capital. The question of how the boys story themselves is ultimately answered using a meta-narrative about a boon, of gift, that emerges from mythic/archetypal literary criticism. Distribution of a desirable boon that will help society is the goal of a hero story. The boys narrate the ways in which they distribute literacy as a boon. The implications for this research include a need to examine classroom space in order to facilitate the deployment of literate identity capital, as well as space for living out the meta-narratives that these boys are composing.

Westerlund, Maja January 2023 (has links)
This study aims to examine the impact of and the interconnection between Twitter and Free Speech, with a focus in Swedish policy and culture, as well as the differences regarding Jack Dorsey’s versus Elon Musk’s management of Twitter Inc. An analysis based in conceptual history examines the utilization of Freedom of Speech through the ages which is then complemented by a Critical discourse analysis of Twitter and the culture wars being waged in Sweden. The usage of Bourdieu’s Forms of Capital and his ideas about fast-thinking and invisible censorship is used to illuminate the ways of which Twitter is being used as well as theway Twitter is, in return, using its user base. This study shows that Twitter lacks traditional accountability usually afforded media companies who are in the business of publicizing information and public opinion. This lack of accountability has led to the misuse and abusive way which Free Speech is being utilized on Twitter, with evidence based in the Swedish culture wars

Swedish Craft Cideries in Context(s)

Miles-Wagner, Brent January 2024 (has links)
This thesis analyzes data from seven Swedish craft cider entrepreneurs to examine how they respond to challenges within the entrepreneurial contexts–institutional, business, social, and spatial–defined by Welter. Thematic analysis is used to identify the major challenges within each context and then Bourdieusian capital theory is employed to analyze how these artisan entrepreneurs use, convert, and combine capitals to overcome obstacles. Findings reveal that two major challenges are present within the various contexts–cider’s symbolic deficit in Sweden and the formation of a Swedish craft cider community and industry. In the face of these challenges Swedish craft cidermakers demonstrate creativity in using and converting non-economic capitals–social capital in particular.

The Making Of A &#039 / city Of Culture&#039 / : Restructuring Antalya

Varli Gork, Reyhan 01 June 2008 (has links) (PDF)
This study tries to identify agencies&rsquo / strategies in the &lsquo / urban restructuring&rsquo / of Antalya into a &lsquo / city of culture&rsquo / by examining the underlying relation between urban cultural policies and global capitalism. Pursuing the relational thinking of the Marxist urban political economy paradigm, the theoretical frames for the concepts of &lsquo / restructuring&rsquo / and &lsquo / city of culture&rsquo / were investigated using multi-dimensional approaches of existing scholarly literature. Since the concept &lsquo / city of culture&rsquo / involves growth oriented development strategies of cities competing with other cities for capital, the concept is examined in these sub-fields: (field of art and culture / subfield(s) of urban -planning, -governance, -politics, -design / field of economy / field of tourism). Thus, to outline a theory of practice for the &lsquo / growth machine&rsquo / agents, the transformation of the &lsquo / forms of capital&rsquo / that both the agents and Antalya &lsquo / city&rsquo / possess is examined in four sub-fields in the general field of power in Antalya. Various qualitative research methods were used to understand what underlies the restructuring process. Most of the qualitative data resulted from direct interviews / 28 individuals from six groups (the representatives of -cultural, educational and academic institutions / -capitalist investors / -local government / -NGOs / -central government / Antalyalite Intelligentsia) and a group interview (with 6 academics at Akdeniz University) during the field research conducted between 2006 and 2008. This thesis identifies the Antalya Greater Municipality (AGM) as the leading agency in the pro-growth coalition in Antalya with support from ATSO (Antalya Chamber of Trade and Commerce) among various other local and global agents (T&Uuml / RSAK, iGM-istanbul Greater Municipality, WTO, EU) with their wealth of economic, cultural, commercial, social, and symbolic capitals influencing urban restructuring in Antalya. Opposing them is a group critical of cultural, economic and urban policies compatible with the policies trying to ease the transformation of Antalya into a festival marketplace or fantasy city. Eventually, it is argued that the urban elites&rsquo / strategies to transform Antalya into a &lsquo / city of culture&rsquo / have produced a &lsquo / growth machine&rsquo / using the world city ideology to convince people of the benefits of this transformation. The essential finding of this study is that the &lsquo / state&rsquo / is the most active player in the restructuring process through its interventions in various fields.

Rethinking Transformation With Tourism: The Case Of Izmir-alacati

Tezcan, Ayhan Melih 01 June 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Tourism has been supported as a development strategy by central governments for the settlements mainly located in the western and southern coasts of Turkey since 1970s. The replacement of agricultural production with tourism was not only resulted in the transformation of social and economic relations but also spatial developments in these places. This thesis is an attempt to investigate socio-economic and socio-spatial consequences of tourism policies and the positions of local people in this process in the case of izmir-Ala&ccedil / ati. Qualitative data gathering methods (in-depth interviews, participant observations etc.) are used in this study in order to obtain necessary information about the research area. The findings of the study indicated that local people, new comers and migrant workers whose positions are determined according to their ownership of different forms of capital in social space which determine their success or failure in the tourism field have been influenced in different ways from this process. For instance, most of local people are the losers of this process as a result of lack necessary forms of capital in tourism field and mismatch between their historically constituted systems of dispositions (habitus) and tourism field. In the conclusion part, it is emphasized that there is the need for a comprehensive approach to tourism issue and the impacts of different policy implementations to the coastal areas should be taken into consideration by decision-makers in order to achieve more egalitarian development strategies for local communities.

Oliveira, André Luiz Santos de 26 February 2018 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / At the beginning of the XXI century, more specifically in the last decade, the state of Sergipe, north-eastern region of Brazil, became destination for groups of foreign immigrants who started their businesses in the state, among these entrepreneurial immigrants, a group of Italians active in area of real estate development and construction. A case study based on the analytical approach of mixed embeddedness was conducted on this group with a theoretical focus on post-industrial theories. In the mentioned model, the individual (entrepreneur) and his/ her relations don´t have total centrality as object of analysis, but also the “structure of opportunities” in which they are inserted and also the political-institutional framework in force in a given time and place are considered for analyses. In the analysis of this process are also implied the exploration of forms of capital and the resources mobilized by those entrepreneurs. The study evidenced that in the experience and performance of the Italians in Sergipe, the fragility experienced by them in terms of social capital and, to some extent, human capital, was shown to be ameliorated by high economic capital and, to some extent, also by ethnic capital. It was demonstrated that an adequate understanding of the business dynamics of this group requires an evaluation of how they manage to mobilize said forms of capital within the specific political, social and economic framework of Sergipe region in the period.

Blomberg, Marcus, Jansson, Dora January 2020 (has links)
The interpretation an individual does as an organizational member is complex. This studyfocuses on the meaning that arises when an individual interprets their organization through theopinions of others. The importance of other people's perceptions of the organization has thusfar seen a low degree of sociological research. However, this study intends to contribute to suchresearch. The purpose of this study is to understand how external perceptions of one's ownorganization become part of an organizational member’s identity, as well as the importance ofthese external perceptions in the organizational member’s relationship with the organizationand external actors. The study takes a qualitative approach, and the results are based on semistructuredinterviews with informants working in different positions in the Swedish bankingsector. The theoretical frameworks used in this study consist of Tom J. Brown et al. and thetheory of organizational identity, Pierre Bourdieu's concept of habitus, and the forms of capitalcombined with Howard Becker's Commitment theory, and finally Erving Goffman'sdramaturgical perspective. The results show that the most crucial aspect for the informants tostay in an organization is the social contacts and networks they receive from their organizationalmembership. Thus, the perceptions of external actors' regarding the organization have littlebearing on the perceived commitment of the informants. Furthermore, it appears that theinformants in interactions with others find their financial knowledge to be highly valued by thepublic, despite a perceived negative attitude towards the sector. The study finds this to beimportant for the impression management, and role-taking informants undertake in interactions.Lastly, it seems that the habitus has a central purpose in understanding the meaning informantsplace in other people's perceptions of the organization, both regarding commitment andinteractions.

HOPE VI and Gårdsten : Regeneration of Distressed Neighborhoods in Washington D.C. and Gothenburg / HOPE VI och Gårdsten : Förnyelse av utsatta bostadsområden i Washington D.C och Göteborg

Larsson, Ida, Seglert, Therése January 2011 (has links)
The point of departure of this thesis is regeneration and how it is carried out in two countries, USA and Sweden. Urban regeneration, according to the used definition, seek either to support vulnerable communities by redistributing resources so that they can take advantage of them, or to promote growth and development and through this improve the situation for those in need. The thesis investigates and compare how the projects and their actors formulate, relate to and strive for a better use and higher value of space. The comparison will help to find lessons to be learned across the contexts. The main questions to be answered are: What elements of the projects or programs strive for a higher value of space in a similar way and what does it in different ways? What lessons for future regeneration can be learned from the comparisons? The comparison is based on the assumption that regeneration schemes can learn from one another across contexts and that this is a constructive way to improve knowledge of regeneration. Three cases are investigated. Townhomes on Capitol Hill and Capper Carrollsburg in Washington D.C., USA, are regenerated under the federal HOPE VI program that targets public housing areas. Gårdsten in Gothenburg, Sweden, is regenerated according to the aim of the municipality to decrease segregation. The comparison is made over five themes, organization, public participation, physical regeneration, social programs and social mix. The thesis highlights differences and similarities in the regeneration approaches and show how the cases aim to increase social, cultural and economic capital. The conclusion is that regeneration in USA could benefit from the way of regeneration according to the Swedish case with more participation and a long term focus of the process, and regeneration in Sweden could benefit from a greater focus on design and architecture as in the U.S. cases.

The transnational field of European think tanks : accumulating specific forms of capital to influence EU policy making / Le champ transnational des think tanks européens : l’accumulation des formes spécifiques de capital pour influencer la prise des décisions politiques sur le niveau européen

Bajenova, Tatyana 13 September 2018 (has links)
This thesis examines the strategies used by European think tanks (TTs) to influence the EU policy making process. It includes in its comparative analysis both Brussels-based TTs, which function at the supranational level, and TTs from France, Slovenia and the United Kingdom. The analysis of empirical data is built upon a flexible conceptual framework combining Bourdieu’s field theory and its recent developments with the concept of boundaries and the social network approach. This study proposes a new way of conceptualising European TTs as a transnational field. While acknowledging a horizontal dimension of the TT field, reflected in its intermediary position between adjacent fields, the thesis identifies mechanisms which account for its vertical institutionalisation at the European level. The thesis argues that both these dimensions of the European TT field allow its members to accumulate and strategically use specific forms of capital in order to enhance their legitimacy, credibility and visibility in the Brussels policy making scene and to gain political influence on the EU institutions. This research emphasises the particular importance of symbolic and network capital which fix the symbolic and social boundaries of the European TT field, as well as contributing to the legitimacy of EU policy making itself. Mapping the structural topography of the positions of European TTs in their own field according to the volume and structure of their capital allows us to determine their “insider” or “outsider” status in the EU political field. This thesis joins current debates concerning the challenges of the EU’s “democratic deficit” and legitimacy, by showing the more privileged access of “insider” think tanks to the EU institutions, but also the insufficiency of transparency measures which regulate their relations. Finally, it furthers the wider discussion of transformation of knowledge production under the influence of political, economic and media demands.

Divnolidi z Brna a okolí: Konstrukce jinakosti v prostředí internetové sociální sítě Facebook / Divnolidi z Brna a okolí: Construction of otherness on Facebook social network site

Matesová, Kateřina January 2016 (has links)
This thesis aims to describe and analyze the process of construction of otherness, use of humour and taste performance on Facebook page Divnolidi z Brna a okolí. Theoretical background explores contemporary approaches to the research of social network sites (particulary on privacy and sharing; a separate chapter is devoted to Facebook social network site), sociological term of taste as the instrument for social distinction (here, the study is primarily based on the work of Pierre Bourdieu), interdisciplinary concept of otherness (in which we examine works of Mary Douglas, Stuart Hall and Marc Augé) as well as theoretical approach to humour called theory of superiority. We conducted a quantitative description of Divnolidi z Brna a okolí page and a qualitative analysis (a method often called "data-crawling") of 47 page posts. Analytical section of this study focuses on answering following questions: What types of posts can be found on the site? How are individuals captured in these posts perceived? How do the users perceive taste / otherness of the captured individuals? Where were these "weird people" (in Czech language "divnolidi") spotted and how do the users perceive these places? Furthermore, we analyze the use of humour by the page users and the way they react to the site's policy and other...
