An investigation of forecasting behaviour

Ryan, Anthony Michael January 2002 (has links) (PDF)
To manage an uncertain future relevant societal groups, such as government and corporate sectors, utilise economic forecasts to help plan future strategies. Many vital decisions are based on economic forecasts. Economists have traditionally been the professionals employed as economic forecasting experts. The dominant paradigm for present day forecasting is the "rational expectations theory", which assumes that a forecaster is capable of making optimal use all of the available information. The field of psychology offers a different, yet complementary, approach to the topic of economic forecasting. The aim of the current study was to research mental processes and behaviours of individuals participating in a forecasting task. The role of the following psychological variables within economic prediction behaviour was assessed: (1) task complexity, (2) decision making style, (3) the anchoring and adjustment heuristic, (4) the framing effect, and (5) personal feelings about the task content. All of these variables were hypothesised to have a direct influence on prediction behaviour. In addition, task complexity and decision making style were assumed to moderate the influence of the other psychological variables. A conceptual framework was designed to depict the assumed relationships. (For complete abstract open document)

Wallin, Elin January 2015 (has links)
In today’s society media constitutes an arena with the opportunity for social communication. The arena is made up of subjective opinions that often leads to free debates about the subjects written about. The recent refugee situation has been highlighted in Swedish media during 2015 and has received widespread attention from various media outlets. The purpose of this paper is to examine how different Swedish newspapers chooses to portray the arriving asylumseekers. The material used is a selection of editorial pages in five daily newspapers. The theories used to evaluate how the newspapers are portraying the asylum seekers is the framing theory and agenda-setting theory. This research uses a qualitative case study approach that is complemented with a media analysis. The results of the research indicate that editorial writers do not differentiate in their description between different ethnic or cultural groups that are seeking asylum. Rather, there is a strong focus in writing about how the refugees are contributing negatively in the development of the Swedish society. The results also showed an indication that the content differs depending on the political standing of the newspaper.

Adolfsson, Tobias January 2016 (has links)
Information is power in the 21st century and strategic narratives through framing are nowadays regarded as part of the modern armoury of war. States constantly compete to create credible narratives in support of their actions on the international policy arena. After the Crimean crisis in 2014 the world was forced to open its eyes to medias new usage in modern warfare. State funded news agencies play an important role in this recent development and one of the most prominent actors is Russia. This thesis seeks to contribute to the discussion of strategic narratives and framing in the news media through a case study of the Russian news site Sputnik News. The thesis focuses on the news agency’s depiction of five empirical events in which the Swedish and Russian armed forces were involved during 2014 and 2015. A qualitative analysis of 25 news articles discussing the five events has detected proof of pro-Russian framing processes. The aim of Sputnik News seems to be a transformation of the general Swedish frame regarding Russia itself and perhaps more specifically Russia’s recent change in foreign policy.

Traditional/hegemonic media often fails to recognize striking and social movements importance. Acting as a counterpoint of dominant tendencies, alternative media establishes itself as a speech place for the maintenance of rights achievements, seeing citizenship as an instrument for emancipation and social justice. In 2015, a unified education strike that lasted more than 100 days in the state of Paraná marked the event history and affected thousands of people across the state. This study verified how Brazilian media, the alternative newspaper Brasil de Fato and the traditional / hegemonic Folha de S. Paulo, framed the Paraná’s state servers and teachers strike movement, specifically the "Civic Center Battle". The methodology used was the framework analysis, because it allowed analyzing media’s position about the event. The analysis was applied in the online publications of Brasil de Fato and Folha de S. Paulo between April 28 th and 30th 2015 - this period includes the event that became known as "Civic Center Battle", which took place in April 29, and the days before and after the repression of the strike movement. It was aimed to analyze alternative and hegemonic patterns of newspapers coverage about this social movement, to understand how each vehicle articulate issues related to protagonists of “Civic Center Battle”. From this analysis, it was possible to point out a significance parallel between the two vehicles studied in this research. The sample was three texts from Brasil de Fato and 13 articles from Folha de S. Paulo. Folha de S. Paulo framed the strikers’ claim in a criminalized way, although it was more plural in the use of sources. Brasil de Fato coverage wasn’t so critical, however, it has contextualized the reasons for the strike and presented data about police repression. This study uses qualitative approach through Framing Theory as proposed by Entman (1993). The theoretical foundation is based on the works of Maria da Glória Gohn (2008, 2012, 2014), Ilse Scherer-Warren (2004, 2011), Pedro Demo (2009), Máximo Simpson Grinberg (1987), Bernardo Kucinski (1991), Cicilia Peruzzo (2008), John Downing (2002), Chris Atton (2001), Entman (1993) and Mauro Porto (2001).

Berglund, Elin, Johansson, Elinor January 2018 (has links)
This study aims to investigate how the swedish newspaper Aftonbladet frame terrorist attacks, depending on if the attack took place in the West or the East. Aftonbladet is one of the largest digital news media in Sweden with a large reader base, and was used to gain an understanding of how framing could affect the Swedish reader’s perception of the West and the East in conjunction with terrorism. The study used a critical discourse analysis to investigate four different terrorist attacks, namely four different news articles. Two of these attacks took place in the West; Manchester and Brussels, and two in the East; Kabul and Baghdad. The analysis showed that the different attacks were framed in different ways, were the articles for the attacks in the East showed signs of orientalism and “othering”, which according to previous studies could lead to “islamophobia” and a division between cultures. This study showed that a stereotypic way of thinking still exist in a post-colonial society and is deeply rooted, even in one of Sweden's largest digital news media, Aftonbladet.
