The elastic analysis associated with the yield line theory for rectangular slabs with a free edge

Amed, Paula Cacoza 15 December 1995 (has links)
This work presents an association of elastic and plastic analysis, for rectangular slabs with uniform load and a free edge. The elatic theory is used to estimate the negative moments and the relation between positive moments in the two directions. These bending moments are obtained from approached functions, based on tables. After compatibilization of elastic moments, the negative plastic moments are adopted and the positive moments are obtained from yield line theory, which will be used again in the calculation of the lenght of the bars over the supports. Once the reinforcements are known, the elastic moments are used again for checking the deflexions. In the examples, the results of elastic plate theory are compared with those obtained by plastic analysis, where it is possible to evidence the economy of the later over the former.

Estimation rapide en surface de la triaxialité des contraintes et de la plasticité : application aux disques et aux aubes de turbine de turboréacteurs / Fast estimation of plasticity and stress triaxiality at free edges : application to gas turbine disks and gas turbine blades

Darlet, Adrien 21 January 2014 (has links)
This work aims to propose a method to estimate plasticity from two structural analyses in elasticity in order to determine the lifetime of structures with stress concentration, such as turbine discs or turbine blades. Fatigue analyses computed by the finite element method in plasticity leads to costly computations not always suitable. Energetic methods such as Neuber’s and the scale transition approach are much less expensive alternatives. Indeed, these methods are able to estimate localized plasticity at free edges only from both computations in elasticity. However, when the stress state is multiaxial, the estimation of the plasticity is inaccurate. This inaccuracy comes from a wrong estimation of the stress triaxiality. Expressions for the stress triaxiality at free edges of elastoplastic structures are established. These expressions are derived thanks to a new heuristic that unify uniaxial tension (plane stress condition) and plane deformation in a single case. The proposed expressions for the stress triaxiality are then used to enhance energetic methods (as Neuber and Glinka rules). Notched specimens subjected to monotonic loadings are studied. However, this methodology is not able to handle alternating loadings. To deal with this problem, a new scale transition approach is developed. Localized plastic areas are considered as inclusions. This approach is enhanced by the new heuristic of multiaxiality. The elastoplastic notch tip strains and stresses of structure subjected to complex alternating loadings are accurately estimated from both elastic analyses. This method is finally applied to the case of a turbine disk and a turbine blade of a jet engine.

Utilisation de la technique de corrélation d’images pour l’étude des effets de bord dans les composites stratifiés / Free edge effects study in laminated composites by digital image correlation technique

Grosbras, Pauline 25 November 2009 (has links)
The use of composite materials has become more and more widespread in many industrial applications. Thanks to Classical Laminates Theory, design of composite structures is today globally well mastered. However, local effects, such as delamination near free edges or junctions, remain a problem. Indeed, mismatches between elastic properties of adjacent plies induce strong three-dimensional interlaminar stresses in the vicinity of free edges and interlaminar interfaces. The aim of this work is to experimentally study these edge effects and to highlight the parameters which could influence them. The approach has consisted in measuring the mechanical fields by Digital Image Correlation at ply scale (mesoscopic scale) on free edges of laminated samples under tensile loading.Three different materials, with different mechanical properties and microstructures have been studied as well as two sample geometries: plane samples and with ply drops. Finite element calculations allowed choosing the stacking sequence [(15/-15)2]s to be studied for experimental tests in which the edge effects are the most important and measurable. The results highlight the presence of displacements gradients and shear strain concentrations near free edges and interlaminar interfaces which depends on the inter-plies gradient of mechanical properties, width of interlaminar interfaces, and presence of a geometrical discontinuity. Moreover, observations at the microscopic scale show the presence of fissures at fiber / matrix interfaces which induce a non-linear shear behavior at mesoscopic scale

3D state space analysis and free-edge effect of piezoelectric laminated thick plates

Han, Chao January 2014 (has links)
The accurate evaluation of interlaminar stresses is of great significance in the analysis and design of laminated and piezoelectric laminated structures because complex behaviours of these stresses near free edges initiate edge delamination that raises concerns about the structural integrity and reliability. This thesis presented 3D hybrid analyses on the interlaminar stresses to investigate the electromechanical coupling and free edge effects of piezoelectric laminated plates with an emphasis on the realistic distributions of the 3D stress and electric fields near free edges. In this research, the state space equations for simply-supported and free-edge piezoelectric laminates under transverse loads and infinite long free-edge piezoelectric laminates under uniaxial extension were obtained in the framework of 3D piezoelasticity by considering all the independent elastic and piezoelectric constants. The equations satisfy the traction-free and open-circuit boundary conditions at free edges and the continuity conditions across all interfaces. On the basis of the transfer matrix and recursive solution approaches, 3D exact solutions were sought by a novel non-uniform layer refinement technique to evaluate the accuracy of the finite element method (FEM), and realistic gradients of interlaminar stresses and electric fields were captured. The FEM results were in good agreement with those from the present solutions except for the regions near free edges. For simply-supported and free-edge laminates, stress variations with material properties, geometries and stacking sequences were obtained. The interlaminar stress τxz was dominant at corners and τyz also tended to contribute to delamination. In the infinite long free-edge laminates, σz, τyz, Ey and Ez exhibited significant gradients near free edges. Furthermore, the considerable influence of the electromechanical coupling effect on interlaminar stresses revealed that piezoelectric laminates were more susceptible to edge delamination and the application of closed-circuited surface conditions might prevent such edge delamination. The present analytical solution demonstrated an improvement in precision over other 2D analytical and numerical solutions and could serve as a benchmark for the determination of interlaminar stresses and electric fields near the free edges of the piezoelectric laminates.

Une approche très efficace pour l'analyse du délaminage des plaques stratifiées infiniment longues / A very efficient approach for the analysis of delamination in infinitely long multilayered plates

Saeedi, Navid 18 December 2012 (has links)
The analysis of local phenomena such as free-edge effects and delamination in multilayered structures requires the accurate theories which can provide a good description of the local response. Since the three-dimensional approaches are generally very expensive in computational time and memory, the layerwise two-dimensional approaches are widely used. In this Ph.D. thesis, a stress layerwise model, called LS1, is applied to the multi-delamination problem in longitudinally invariant multilayered plates. The invariance in the longitudinal direction allows us to solve the problem analytically. At first, we propose an analytical method for the analysis of multi-delaminated multilayered plates subjected to the uniaxial traction. The free-edge interlaminaire stress singularities and the mode III delamination onset are investigated. A refined model, called Refined LS1, is proposed in order to improve the approximations in singularity zones such as free edges and crack tips. The results of the refined model are validated by comparing them with those obtained by a three-dimensional finite element model. Afterwards, the proposed analytical approach is extended to the cylindrical bending of the multilayered plates. The propagation of delamination in modes I and II is studied and the approximations of the LS1 model are validated. At last, we generalize the proposed analytical method to take into account all invariant loads in the longitudinal direction. The final approach allows us to analyze the rectangular multilayered plates subjected to invariant loads on the top and bottom surfaces, imposed displacements or forces at the lateral edges, and also four types of loading at the longitudinal ends: uniaxial traction, out-of-plane bending, torsion and in-plane bending. The analytical solution of the LS1 model is obtained for a laminated plate subjected to all the loads mentioned above. The approach is validated by comparison with the three-dimensional finite element method for various types of loading

Modeling Boundary Effect Problems of Heterogeneous Structures by Extending Mechanics of Structure Genome

Bo Peng (5930135) 10 June 2019 (has links)
First, the theory of MSG is extended to aperiodic heterogeneous solid structures. Integral constraints are introduced to decompose the displacements and strains of the heterogeneous material into a fluctuating part and a macroscopic part, of which the macroscopic part represents the responses of the homogenized material. One advantage of this theory is that boundary conditions are not required. Consequently, it is capable of handling micro-structures of arbitrary shapes. In addition, periodic constraints can be incorporated into this theory as needed to model periodic or partially periodic materials such as textile composites. In this study, the newly developed method is employed to investigate the finite thickness effect of textile composites.<div><br></div><div>Second, MSG is enabled to deal with Timoshenko beam-like structures with spanwise heterogeneity, which provide higher accuracy than the previous available Euler–Bernoulli beam model. Its reduced form, the MSG beam cross sectional analysis, is found to be able to analyze generalized free-edge problems with arbitrary layups and subjected to general loads. In this method, the only assumption applied is that the laminate is long enough so that the Saint-Venant principle can be adopted. There is no limitation on the cross section of the laminate since no ad hoc assumption is involved with the microstructure geometry. This method solve the free-edge problem from a multiscale simulation point of view.<br></div><div><br></div>

Design and analysis of integrated waveguide structures and their coupling to silicon-based light emitters / Design und Analyse von integrierten Wellenleiterstrukturen sowie deren Kopplung zu Silizium-basierten Lichtemittern

Germer, Susette 28 July 2015 (has links) (PDF)
A major focus is on integrated Silicon-based optoelectronics for the creation of low-cost photonics for mass-market applications. Especially, the growing demand for sensitive and portable optical sensors in the environmental control and medicine follows in the development of integrated high resolution sensors [1]. In particular, since 2013 the quick onsite verification of pathogens, like legionella in drinking water pipes, is becoming increasingly important [2, 3]. The essential questions regarding the establishment of portable biochemical sensors are the incorporation of electronic and optical devices as well as the implementations of fundamental cross-innovations between biotechnology and microelectronics. This thesis describes the design, fabrication and analysis of high-refractive-index-contrast photonic structures. Besides silicon nitride (Si3N4) strip waveguides, lateral tapers, bended waveguides, two-dimensional photonic crystals (PhCs) the focus lies on monolithically integrated waveguide butt-coupled Silicon-based light emitting devices (Sibased LEDs) [4, 5] for use as bioanalytical sensor components. Firstly, the design and performance characteristics as single mode regime, confinement factor and propagation losses due to the geometry and operation wavelength (1550 nm, 541 nm) of single mode (SM), multi mode (MM) waveguides and bends are studied and simulated. As a result, SM operation is obtained for 1550 nm by limiting the waveguide cross-section to 0.5 μm x 1 μm resulting in modal confinement factors of 87 %. In contrast, for shorter wavelengths as 541 nm SM propagation is excluded if the core height is not further decreased. Moreover, the obtained theoretical propagation losses for the lowestorder TE/TM mode are in the range of 0.3 - 1.3 dB/cm for an interface roughness of 1 nm. The lower silicon dioxide (SiO2) waveguide cladding should be at least 1 μm to avoid substrate radiations. These results are in a good correlation to the known values for common dielectric structures. In the case of bended waveguides, an idealized device with a radius of 10 μm was developed which shows a reflection minimum (S11 = - 22 dB) at 1550 nm resulting in almost perfect transmission of the signal. Additionally, tapered waveguides were investigated for an optimized light coupling between high-aspect-ratio devices. Here, adiabatic down-tapered waveguides were designed for the elimination of higher-order modes and perfect signal transmission. Secondly, fabrication lines including Electron-beam (E-beam) lithography and reactive ion etching (RIE) with an Aluminum (Al) mask were developed and lead to well fabricated optical devices in the (sub)micrometer range. The usage of focused ion beam (FIB) milling is invented for smoother front faces which were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). As a result, the anisotropy of the RIE process was increased, but the obtained surface roughness parameters are still too high (10 – 20 nm) demonstrating a more advanced lithography technique is needed for higher quality structures. Moreover, this study presents an alternative fabrication pathway for novel designed waveguides with free-edge overlapping endfaces for improving fiber-chipcoupling. Thirdly, the main focus lies on the development of a monolithic integration circuit consisting of the Si-based LED coupled to an integrated waveguide. The light propagation between high-aspect-ratio devices is enabled through low-loss adiabatic tapers. This study shows, that the usage of CMOS-related fabrication technologies result in a monolithic manufacturing pathway for the successful implementation of fully integrated Si-based photonic circuits. Fourth, transmission loss measurements of the fabricated photonic structures as well as the waveguide butt-coupled Si-based LEDs were performed with a generated setup. As a result, free-edge overlapping MM waveguides show propagation loss coefficients of ~ 65 dB/cm in the range of the telecommunication wavelength. The high surface roughness parameters (~ 150 nm) and the modal dispersion in the core are one of the key driving factors. These facts clearly underline the improvement potential of the used fabrication processes. However, electroluminescence (EL) measurements of waveguide butt-coupled Si-based LEDs due to the implanted rare earth (RE) ion (Tb3+, Er3+) and the host material (SiO2/SiNx) were carried out. The detected transmission spectra of the coupled Tb:SiO2 systems show a weak EL signal at the main transition line of the Tb3+-ion (538 nm). A second emission line was detected in the red region of the spectrum either corresponding to a further optical transition of Tb3+ or a Non Bridging Oxygen Hole Center (NBOHC) in SiO2. Unfortunately, no light emission in the infrared range was established for the Er3+-doped photonic circuits caused by the low external quantum efficiencies (EQE) of the Er3+ implanted Si-based LEDs. Nevertheless, transmission measurements between 450 nm – 800 nm lead again to the result that an emission at 650 nm is either caused by an optical transition of the Er3+-ion or initialized by the NBOHC in the host. Overall, it is difficult to assess whether or not these EL signals are generated from the implanted ions, thus detailed statements about the coupling efficiency between the LED and the integrated waveguide are quite inadequate. Nevertheless, the principle of a fully monolithically integrated photonic circuit consisting of a Si-based LED and a waveguide has been successfully proven in this study.
