Exponential asymptotics and free-surface flowsTrinh, Philippe H. January 2010 (has links)
When traditional linearised theory is used to study free-surface flows past a surface-piercing object or over an obstruction in a stream, the geometry of the object is usually lost, having been assumed small in one or several of its dimensions. In order to preserve the nonlinear nature of the geometry, asymptotic expansions in the low-Froude or low-Bond limits can be derived, but here, the solution invariably predicts a waveless free-surface at every order. This is because the waves are in fact, exponentially small, and thus beyond-all-orders of regular asymptotics; their formation is a consequence of the divergence of the asymptotic series and the associated Stokes Phenomenon. In this thesis, we will apply exponential asymptotics to the study of two new problems involving nonlinear geometries. In the first, we examine the case of free-surface flow over a step including the effects of both gravity and surface tension. Here, we shall see that the availability of multiple singularities in the geometry, coupled with the interplay of gravitational and cohesive effects, leads to the discovery of a remarkable new set of solutions. In the second problem, we study the waves produced by bluff-bodied ships in low-Froude flows. We will derive the analytical form of the exponentially small waves for a wide range of hull geometries, including single-cornered and multi-cornered ships, and then provide comparisons with numerical computations. A particularly significant result is our confirmation of the thirty-year old conjecture by Vanden-Broeck & Tuck (1977) regarding the impossibility of waveless single-cornered ships.

Experimental studies of a small scale horizontal axis tidal turbineFranchini, Italo 17 November 2016 (has links)
The research in this thesis focuses on the investigation of tidal turbines using a small scale horizontal axis tidal turbine and a 2D hydrofoil testing rig, combining experiments with simulations to provide comprehensive results and to better understand some of the variables that affect their performance. The experimental campaigns were carried out at the University of Victoria fluids research lab and the Sustainable Systems Design Lab (SSDL). The experimental testing rigs were re-designed by the author and are now fully automated, including a friendly graphical user interface for easy implementation. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was used as the quantitative flow visualization method to obtain the time-averaged flow fields.
This thesis presents three investigations. The first study aims to quantify the impacts of channel blockage, free surface effects and foundations on hydrokinetic turbine performance, using porous discs and an axial flow rotor. The results were used to cross-validate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. It was found that as wall blockage increases, thrust and power are incremented with and without the inclusion of free surface deformation. Discrepancies between simulations and experimental results on free surface effects compared to a slip wall were obtained and hence further research is recommended and the author gives some advice on how to proceed in this investigation.
The second study determines the performance of four hydrofoil candidates over a range of low Reynolds number (Re), delivering useful information that can be applied to low Re energy conversion systems and, specifically in this case, to improve the performance of the small scale tidal turbine at the SSDL lab. The study combines the 2D hydrofoil test rig along with PIV measurements in order to experimentally obtain lift and drag coefficients. The experiments were carried out in the recirculating flume tank over the range of low Re expected for the small scale rotor rig, in order to provide more accurate results to improve rotor blade design. In addition, numerical simulations using XFOIL, a viscid-inviscid coupled method, were introduced to the study. These results were analysed against experiments to find the most suitable parameters for reliable performance prediction. The final results suggested that adding a numerical trip at a certain chordwise distance produced more reliable results.
Finally, an experimental study on turbine rotor performance and tip vortex behavior was performed using again the rotor rig and PIV. Blade design and rotor performance were assessed, showing good agreement with Blade Element Momentum (BEM) simulations, particularly at predicting the tip speed ratio corresponding to the maximum power coefficient point. Regarding the wake structure, tip vortex locations (shed from the blade tips) were captured using PIV in the near wake region, showing evidence of wake expansion. The velocity and vorticity fields are also provided to contribute to the development and validation of CFD and potential flow codes. / Graduate / 0548 / 0547 / 0538 / iafranch@uvic.ca

Modélisation multiphysique du convertisseur d'aciérie / Multiphysics modelling of the steelmaking converterDoh, Yannick Nikienta 26 January 2012 (has links)
The present thesis treats different phenomena taking place in a steelmaking converter through the development of two separate models. The first model describes the cavity produced at the free surface of the metal bath by the high speed impinging oxygen jet. It is based on a zonal approach, where gas compressibility effects are taken into account only in the high velocity jet region while elsewhere the gas is treated as incompressible. The Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method is employed to follow the deformation of the bath free surface. Calculations are presented for two- and three-phase systems and compared against experimental data obtained in various cold model experiments. The influence on the size and shape of the cavity of various parameters (including the jet inlet boundary conditions, the VOF advection scheme and the turbulence modelling) is studied. Next, the model is used to simulate the interaction of a supersonic oxygen jet with the surface of a liquid steel bath in a pilot-scale converter. The second model concentrates on fluid flow, heat transfer and the post-combustion reaction in the gas phase above the metal bath. It uses the Simple Chemical Reaction Scheme approach to describe the transport of the chemical species and takes into account the consumption of oxygen by the bath and thermal radiative transfer. The numerical predictions are in reasonable agreement with measurements collected in a laboratory experiment and in a pilot-scale furnace

Numerical simulation of depth-averaged flows models : a class of Finite Volume and discontinuous Galerkin approaches / Simulation numérique de modèles d'écoulement type "depth averaged" : une classe de schémas Volumes Finis et Galerkin discontinuDuran, Arnaud 17 October 2014 (has links)
This work is devoted to the development of numerical schemes to approximatesolutions of depth averaged flow models. We first detail the construction of Finite Volume approaches for the Shallow Water system with source terms on unstructured meshes. Based on a suitable reformulation of the equations, we implement a well-balanced and positive preserving approach, and suggest adapted MUSCL extensions. The method is shown to handle irregular topography variations and demonstrates strong stabilities properties. The inclusion of friction terms is subject to a thorough analysis, leading to the establishment of some Asymptotic Preserving property through the enhancement of another recent Finite Volume scheme. The second aspect of this study concerns discontinuous Galerkin Finite Elementmethods. Some of the ideas advanced in the Finite Volume context areemployed to broach the Shallow Water system on triangular meshes. Numericalresults are exposed and the method turns out to be well suited to describe a large variety of flows. On these observations we finally propose to exploit its features to extend the approach to a new family of Green-Nadghi equations. Numerical experiments are also proposed to validate this numerical model.

Etude expérimentale du tourbillon en fer à cheval au pied d'un obstacle émergent dans un roulement laminaire à surface libre / Experimental study of the horseshoe vortex at the foot of a emergent obstacle in a laminar free-surface flowLaunay, Gaby 17 November 2016 (has links)
A laminar boundary layer developing under a free-surface and interacting with an emerging obstacle lead to the creation of a complex recirculation zone called horseshoe vortex upstream from the obstacle. This recirculation zone is composed of a given number of vortices wrapping around the obstacle with various kind of dynamics. The aim of this work is to perform an experimental parametric study of the laminar, and slightly turbulent horseshoe vortex. Measurements are obtained by PIV and trajectographies and detection method based on modal decomposition (POD) and critical points are used to ease the study of the vortex dynamics. This manuscript intends to : (i) Explain the horseshoe vortex main characteristics evolution with the non-dimensional parameters of the flow. (ii) Define a typology of the different observed vortex dynamics. (iii) Identify the physical mechanisms at the origin of those dynamics through the use of a conceptual model. (iv) And finally, show the influence of the obstacle length on the horseshoe vortex.

Development of particle method representing floating bodies with highly non-linearwaves.Tsukamoto, Marcio Michiharu 22 June 2006 (has links)
A numerical method called Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method was developed in this study to analyze incompressible fluids. It is a particle method using a lagrangean representation without any grid. The governing equations are the Navier-Stokes equation and continuity equation for incompressible and non-viscous flow. Most of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods are based on eulerian representation and use grids to describe the geometry of the simulated domain. These differences make the MPS method easier to analyze highly nonlinear phenomena as free surface with wave breaking, sloshing, slamming, etc. In previously published articles, results of physical experiments had shown good agreement with the numerical results obtained with MPS method. In the present work, results of exciting forces were compared with the results obtained with a validated program called Wave Analysis MIT (WAMIT). It had a good agreement of results between these two programs. The optimization of the neighborhood calculation function got a good economy of computational time. The greatest contribution of this study was the optimization of the linear system solver. It was made implementing in the developed code a parallelized public code called Portable, Extensible Toolkit for Scientific Computation (PETSc) that provided a good performance profit.

Analysis and implementation of implicit and projection methods for free surface flowsOishi, Cássio Machiaveli 05 August 2008 (has links)
In the context of the MAC method and based on finite difference schemes, this work presents three studies: i) a stability analysis, ii) the development of implicit techniques, and iii) the construction of projection methods for free surface flows. In the stability analysis, the main result shows a precise stability restriction on the Crank-Nicolson method when one uses a staggered grid with Dirichlet explicit boundary conditions. However, the same method with implicit boundary conditions becomes unconditionally stable. In order to obtain more stable methods, implicit formulations are applied for the pressure equation at the free surface, which is derived from the normal stress condition. This approach results in a coupling of the velocity and pressure fields; hence new projection methods for free surface flows need to be developed. The developed projection methods result in new methodologies for low Reynolds number free surface flows. It is also shown that the proposed methods can be applied for viscoelastic fluids. New strategies are derived for obtaining second-order accurate projection methods for free surface flows. In addition to the theoretical results on the stability of numerical schemes, implicit techniques and projection methods, computational tests are carried out and the results compared to consolidate the theory. The numerical results are obtained by the FREEFLOW system. The eficiency and robustness of the techniques in this work are demonstrated by solving complex tridimensional problems involving free surface and low Reynolds numbers, including the jet buckling and the extrudate swell problems

Numerical simulation of a marine current turbine in turbulent flowXin, Bai January 2014 (has links)
The marine current turbine (MCT) is an exciting proposition for the extraction of renewable tidal and marine current power. However, the numerical prediction of the performance of the MCT is difficult due to its complex geometry, the surrounding turbulent flow and the free surface. The main purpose of this research is to develop a computational tool for the simulation of a MCT in turbulent flow and in this thesis, the author has modified a 3D Large Eddy Simulation (LES) numerical code to simulate a three blade MCT under a variety of operating conditions based on the Immersed Boundary Method (IBM) and the Conservative Level Set Method (CLS). The interaction between the solid structure and surrounding fluid is modelled by the immersed boundary method, which the author modified to handle the complex geometrical conditions. The conservative free surface (CLS) scheme was implemented in the original Cgles code to capture the free surface effect. A series of simulations of turbulent flow in an open channel with different slope conditions were conducted using the modified free surface code. Supercritical flow with Froude number up to 1.94 was simulated and a decrease of the integral constant in the law of the wall has been noticed which matches well with the experimental data. Further simulations of the marine current turbine in turbulent flow have been carried out for different operating conditions and good match with experimental data was observed for all flow conditions. The effect of waves on the performance of the turbine was also investigated and it has been noticed that this existence will increase the power performance of the turbine due to the increase of free stream velocity.

Simulation of Thermo-mechanical Deformation in High Speed Rolling of Long Steel ProductsBiswas, Souvik 27 October 2003 (has links)
"A Java pre- and post-processing graphical user-oriented interface has been developed by the authors to aid a mill engineer with little or no finite element experience throughout the analysis process of the finishing rolling stands. A case study is presented that uses the commercial finite element code ABAQUS/Explicit to predict roundness and tolerance customer requirements. Other parameters that are determined include spread, crosssectional area, percentage reduction in area, incremental plastic strain, total plastic strain and roll force. All parameters are compared to theoretical models and some are compared to full-scale mill testing."
