Brechas na eternidade: tempo e repetição no teatro de Jean-Luc Lagarce / Gaps in eternity: time and repetition in the theather of Jean-Luc LagarceOliveira, Cícero Alberto de Andrade 07 October 2011 (has links)
Repetition, according to David Hume, changes nothing in the object that is repeated, but modifies something in the spirit which beholds it: it unleashes a difference in perception in the observer. The texts of the French playwright Jean-Luc Lagarce (1957-1995) are marked by the systematic return of words, phrases, expressions, characters and themes, to the point that the recent criticism that revolves around him sees in this characteristic a kind of Lagarcian ethos. The detailed analysis of two texts of the author - Carthage, encore (written in the beginning of his career) and Jétais dans ma maison et jattendais que la pluie vienne (in the end of his life) reveals an interesting aspect: in them repetition works as a needle, weaving his work, unleashing another perception of the passing of time, in which past, present and future gradually thin out, becoming compact: the apprehension of the passing of time is suspended and, simultaneously, a gap to eternity is open. The present paper proposes to understand the use of repetition in these two texts as a performative element, that is, whose use in a sentence creates an illocutionary strength able to produce an effect of time suspension, modifying the perception of the public (reader or spectator).

Rachel, the circulation of the image, and the death of tragedyBethel, Marnie Elizabeth 25 February 2013 (has links)
Although it is frequently suggested that the idea of celebrity, as opposed to fame, is a construct of twentieth-century popular culture, many of the originating mechanisms and characteristics of modern celebrity have their roots in the more distant past. In France, the Industrial Revolution and the resulting mechanization of the media in the early to mid-nineteenth century fostered the processes of publicity. The invention of photography, the explosion in circulation of newspapers, and the emergence of cultural criticism gave rise to a new sense of both the importance and the relatability of people in the public eye.
Elisa Rachel Félix (1821-1858), known professionally as “Rachel,” was the undisputed star of the French state theater, the Comédie-Française, from 1838 until shortly before her death. She was in many ways the first exemplar of the tropes of celebrity in French popular culture. Not only was she greatly admired for her talent in performance, especially in the classical tragic repertoire of the Golden Age of French playwriting, but she was also a pioneer in what Tom Mole has called “the hermeneutic of intimacy,” the perception on the part of the public that the accessibility of images of the performer creates a sense of connection and sympathy between artist and audience.
This dissertation will explore the varieties of media through which Rachel’s career and life were publicized and the competing currents of her celebrity identity: the extent to which the star was understood as an exceptional woman versus her identification with her public. Depictions of Rachel in traditional arts, such as sculpture and painting, competed with her portrayal in such modern media as photographs, newspaper columns and caricatures, either enhancing her closeness to her fans or emphasizing her fundamental difference.
The image of celebrity which Rachel helped to create endured after her premature death and contributed mightily to a foundational shift in the emphasis of media culture in France. Coinciding as it did with the heyday of Romanticism and the rise of realism in the arts, the cult of celebrity contributed strongly to the death of the tragic genre. / text

Por ora, esta pesquisa denomina "Caligrafia Apagada" o Silêncio aqui investigado / Abstract: Considering the Silence as an inherent element to creation processes of Modern Theater, this research is devoted to research the Silence on the Play "Waiting for Godot" by Samuel Beckett, building careful reflection on its presence in specific categories in the Beckettiana dramaturgy. The concerns that arose during the research have converged to make this analysis shaped by the following proposition: The Silence that remains in "Waiting for Godot" is not restricted to the punctuation of the rubrics and dialogism based on the word, but in the dialectic constructed from the language of their scenic elements inserted in the writing and the visual aesthetic. For now, this research is called "Off Calligraphy" Silence here investigated / Mestrado / Artes Cenicas / Mestre em Artes

Yasmina Reza, le miroir et le masque / Yasmina Reza, the Mirror and the maskBouchetard, Alice 13 April 2010 (has links)
The Famous French playwright Yasmina Reza received some of the most prestigious prices in the world : three Molières (FR), a Laurence Olivier Award (UK), two Tony Award (USA), a Die Welt (DE). Nevertheless, in France she is still considered as merely a successful author, with some kind of new farce to offer. A specific study of Yasmina Reza’s drama, including her language, her characters and the architecture of her plays, brings out other meaningful and complex colors from under the mask of comedy. She stages middle-class characters whose life is quite easy; in the meantime she reveals universal metaphysical issues. It is always about a clash between a person and the world or a person and his kind. This reflection about the anxious being goes on stage with a reconsideration of the power of theater. The middle-class characterization is a mirror for the audience as well as it is a mask that covers a constant questioning about the meaning of life and art, continuing the work of the avant-garde of the middle of the 20th century, of which she appears to be an unexpected new recruit.

The Empire of Words: a study of theatrical word of Valère Novarina.Oliveira, Lígia Souza de 25 June 2018 (has links)
The present thesis intends to argue the construction of the word in the dramaturgical work of the Franco-Swiss Valère Novarina. Recognized as one of the greatest playwrights in activity in France, he is also director, painter and drawer. His work - divided into theoretical propositions, purely theatrical and utopian theater - is built from the precept that the word must break with daily communication and link its embodiment in actor. To account these angles, two aspects are analyzed in this survey: the idea of language games minted by Ludwig Wittgenstein, used here to develop the Novarina\'s emphasis on the disjointed word; and the vocality idea developed by Paul Zumthor, which alludes to corporeal and physiological concepts constructed in Valère Novarina work\'s. We conclude this theoretical study with an analysis of John Austin\'s theory of speech acts and his intersection with the playwright\'s work. For this, was reviwed the recent Novarina\'s textual production. With the practice of republishing texts after performance season, Novarina exalts the transformations made by the scene. Thus, this thesis engaged to analysis three playwright\'s texts, two of which are already published. Firstily we compare the texts Le Vivier des Noms and Entrée Perpértuelle, - the latter, the book\'s scenic version that was published in 2015. This chapter was the basis for the analysis of the transformations found in the written text, which reverberate the scenic achievements. In a second moment, was analyze the text L\'homme hors de lui, not yet published. The text analyzed is kind of archive of the textual transformations resulting from the scenic creative process, which can be followed in 2017, and which gave support to indicate how the textual modifications come from the performance. Finally, the study ends with the presentation of the excerpt Les Quatre États du Texte, present in the book Lumières du Corps to draw parallels between the creative process of Novarina and the text that is based on the construction of language in space. These are followed by some thesis that deepen and reinforce the sundry creative processes to which Novarina\'s text is linked, giving a dimension of playwright work\'s tichness and mainly of the performative condition of his texts, even if on paper.

This dissertation addresses the representation of fury in Jean-Baptiste Lully and Philippe Quinault’s 1685 opera, Roland. It seeks to define the rhetorical means through which fury is conveyed on the classical stage of the second half of the XVIIth century, whether they be found in the music, text or staging. The first chapter considers the mythological figures of fury in a historical perspective, from ancient origins to the famous Orlando furioso and its numerous reinterpretations in the French dramatic repertoire, therefore gathering the basis of the topic of fury. This section also addresses the development of the aesthetics of fury, and its relation to the sublime ideal of classical expression.
Guided by the idea of performance and of its effects on the audience, the second chapter studies Roland’s wrath in a rhetorical perspective. Following the traditional rhetorical divisions – inventio, dispositio, elocutio and actio –, the study of this scene shows that dynamics of contrast and balance between strength and softness lie at the core of the rhetoric of disturbance which conducts the representation of fury.
