The aim of this work is to investigate Freud's conception of science between 1873 and 1900. For this purpose, we assume an epistemological oriented approach in an attempt to reconstruct this conception by setting it against to the context and the articulation of the author's propositions, by focusing on the content of his argumentation. We started by outlining a panorama in which we try to recover the historical influences that Freud suffered to establish his conception of science. In this panorama, we detect a strong presence of the model of the Naturwissenschaften, once his values could have been derived both from his contact with members of the school of Helmholtz, significant representatives of this model, as well as Brentano and Mill, philosophers who advocated psychology as an autonomous and scientific discipline. Afterwards, we begin to follow Freud's path internally in order to understand how this conception of science would manifest itself in the course of his research. We realized that initially he adjusted himself to a neurophysiologist program, in which the technical research in the laboratory offered the scientific tone. However, he soon began to show a willingness to defend the scientific study of new objects, such as hysteria and hypnosis. Thereafter, his conception of science seemed to be constantly challenged. Psychology was gradually brought back from the reserve of his influences to explain what he observed through the speech of his patients at the clinic. After trying to unite this discipline to neurology in order to propose a scientific explanation for psychic processes, Freud found a new conceptual basis, which in turn implied the birth of a new theory, metapsychology. We suggest, at the end, that Freud's conception of science still can reveal unexplored aspects, which are most likely to contribute to the debate on the scientific status of psychoanalysis and the historical foundation of this discipline / Mestrado / Filosofia / Mestre em Filosofia

Montenegro, Maria Aparecida de Paiva 18 December 1998 (has links)
Orientador: Osmyr Faria Gabbi Jr / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Filosofia e Ciencias Humanas / Made available in DSpace on 2018-07-25T16:54:58Z (GMT). The present study consists of a survey of the implications of the introduction of the concept of death drive to Freudian theory, conceived of as a theory of irrational acts. It is based on the work of Kimmerle (1988) on ¿Beyond the Pleasure Principle¿, whereby death drive would solely be a convergence point of contradictions which would accumulate since the origins of metapsychology. From that perspective, this study undertakes an investigation of Freudian writings of metapsychologic character, selected from the period that comprehends the pre-psycoanalitic formulations up to the presentation of the second topic of the psychic apparatus. Along that course, it traces the possible intrinsic contradictions to the Freudian theoretical project and identifies the core of apories in the empiricist tradition inherited by the founder of psychoanalysis. More precisely, in the assumption that the description of psychic processes should go back to the origin from which those processes would have originated. In the light of that conception, the empirical order of the events that originated the psyche gains a fundamental importance, give that the first event would determine the goal to be pursued by the functioning of the mind. Thus, contrary to the lack of distinction proposed by Freud, to escepe from displeasure and to search for pleasure would constitute differentiated goals, in such a way that the precedence of the former in relation to the latter would imply in the precedence of reality over pleasure. In order to maintain the central thesis of psychoanalysis - the precedence of the unconscious over the conscious - Freud would try to demonstrate that the displeasure associated with psychopathologic disturbances would go back to an earlier pleasure intedicted by repression. However, instead of pleasure, the genesis of the psychic processes would involve an even more remote displeasure which would make him move that origin even further back, until reaching the formulation of the death drive. Under that drive, the origin of the psyche would be moved beyon the limits of experience, from where it would not be possible to move any further back. As the contradictions emerge in all metapsychologic models formulated by Freud, it would seem erroneous to consider that the notion of rationality underlying that theory would be compromised bu the formulation of that new drive. In fact, that notion would be compromised from its very beginning, since it would not seem consistent to propose that rationality (conscience) would be founded on a non-rational psychic basis (the unconscious) / Doutorado / Doutor em Filosofia

Cabrera Pérez, Pablo January 2015 (has links)

A phenomenological hermeneutic investigation into the psychoanalytic psychotherapist's experience of using the psychoanalytic couch

Milton, Christopher January 2004 (has links)
The aim of this study was to describe and critically explore the psychoanalytic, psychotherapist's lived experience of the technique of using the couch. Through examination of the literature a question was formulated that would disclose the analyst's experience of the technique of using the couch. Four experienced psychoanalytic practitioners who could be operationally defined as 'analysts' were interviewed. Using a phenomenological method the protocols were comprehensively analyzed to produce descriptions of the general structure of the experience. These were then texturally enhanced using interleaved direct citations from the interviews. The structural and textural 'findings ' so produced were then hermeneutically dialogued with contemporary psychoanalytic notions of critical discourse and intersubjectivity. The phenomenological ' findings ' of the study disclosed the meaning of the couch as context-based, paradoxical and ambiguous. The couch was found to be a symbol of the analyst as analyst and the process as authentic analysis. Furthermore, at its best, the couch was found to mediate a mode of being that is containing and intimate and in which psychological life may be evoked, tracked and interpreted. The most significant contributor to this mode of being was found to be privacy, which, in particular, helps the analyst maintain an analytic attitude. The couch was also found to be significantly implicated in the generation of an intersubjective analytic third and to support reverie. These 'findings' were hermeneutically dialogued with literature on the couch as well as contemporary psychoanalytic theoretical notions. The dialogue fell into three foci. The first focus entailed deconstructing the meaning of the couch as context-based and ambiguous and not essential. The second pursued critiques of the role that the couch plays in domination, of its function as a symbol/evocative object and of the way in which it shapes being-together, bodily attunement, privacy, the intersubjective analytic third and reverie. Finally the 'findings' were critically examined in terms of both Lacan's notion 'analytic discourse ' and its role in revealing/concealing the analysand as subject. The study concludes with an examination of its own limitations and suggestions for further research.

Freud. This text investigates the possibilities of a final articulation of the conceptions of anxiety elaborated in the work of S. Freud. For that, it rests on a reading of Abriss der Psychanalyse, a text that, approaching at a single moment the broader range of aspects of the freudian theory, allows a concomitant discussion over three concurrent elements in the building up of its knowledge of that affect: body, consciousness and danger / Doutorado / Filosofia / Doutor em Filosofia
