Orientação ao jardim: andanças por caminhos impermanentes / Orientation to the garden: journeys on impermanent paths

Alexandrino, Helena 27 April 2017 (has links)
In this project, I intend to perform series of drawings, prints and paintings with the garden as the central theme. To accomplish it, I will look for references in my personal memories, particularly those related to the small garden of the suburban house of my childhood, and in the gardens designed by poets and artists, in what they may have of small, modest, delicate and unstable. This impermanence or ephemerality inherent at this theme will be reflected during the invention and production of the works, through the exploration of the instability and of the possible limits and borders, passages and paths, separations and approximations between painting, drawing and printmaking.

Botanic Garden User Outcomes: A Means-End Investigation

Wassenberg, Christopher Lee 01 June 2012 (has links)
ABSTRACT Botanic Garden User Outcomes: A Means-End Investigation Christopher Lee Wassenberg This study explored the outcomes that Leaning Pine Arboretum users experience from visiting the botanic garden. Understanding visitor motivations and benefits has been a focus in the field of outdoor recreation, and the subject of a number of botanic garden and green space visitor studies. Previous studies have found that visiting a botanic garden can serve as a coping strategy for dealing with and reducing life stress (Holbrook, 2010; Kohlleppel, Bradley, & Jacob, 2002; Maller, Townsend, Pryor, Brown, & St Leger, 2005) and that visiting public outdoor green spaces led visitors to experience greater exposure to natural spaces and to have meaningful experiences with others (Burgess, Harrison, & Limb, 1988). This study employed means-end theory (Gutman, 1982) to investigate the link between garden attributes and user outcomes. In-person interviews were conducted with 83 garden visitors during the summer of 2011. Researchers coded the interview data to identify participants’ reported attributes, consequences, and values. Intercoder reliability was conducted to ensure validity of the results. Coded data were entered into the Laddermap (Gengler & Reynolds, 1995) computer software program to be analyzed. Implication matrixes were created to determine the number of times concepts were linked. From the implication matrixes, hierarchical value maps (HVMs) were developed to display the results graphically. HVMs show the strength of links between attributes, consequences, and values, and were used to compare results from different visitor groups within the study. These groups included males and females, students and non-students, and first time and return visitors. The findings revealed that participants felt that the botanic garden and plants were the most meaningful garden attributes. These garden attributes led participants to experience the consequences new experiences and learning stress and relief and relaxation. Having experienced these meaningful consequences allowed participants to reach the most frequently mentioned values: transference and improved quality of life. The study found important links between attributes, consequences, and values, including the consequences escape and stress relief and relaxation, and the consequence new experiences and learning, and the value transference. Important differences were also found between the attribute, consequence, and value chains of multiple visitor groups. Botanical garden and arboretum mangers may use this study to improve visitor experiences and outcomes. A better understanding of visitor benefits and outcomes can help managers understand the needs of current visitors, potential visitors, and potential garden supporters. In turn, garden visitors who have better experiences may be more inclined to provide funding or other support to conserve and preserve their local gardens. Based on the results garden managers should maintain a broad range of healthy, well-displayed plants; exert high-levels of detail to all aspects of garden operations; continue to provide opportunities for full visitor immersion; and offer unified, accessible interpretation of garden spaces and plants. Additionally, these results may be used to validate funding requests and guide allocation of funding. Keywords: Botanic garden users, outcomes, means-end theory, Leaning Pine Arboretum

Pompeian peristyles: form, function, and meaning

Trentin, Summer Rae 01 May 2014 (has links)
This dissertation expands upon previous analyses of the social functions of Pompeian domestic architecture by articulating the essential role of the peristyle garden in communicating the status of the homeowner while structuring the interactions of residents and visitors with the art and architecture both of the peristyle itself and with the house as a whole. Peristyles provided light, air, and circulation space for the home, but their aesthetic function was just as significant; embellished with painting, sculpture, fountains, and plants, peristyles were important centers of display. Although typically the largest and most lavishly decorated architectural space in a Pompeian house, the peristyle is often treated summarily in studies of Pompeian domestic architecture. This study fills a lacuna in scholarship, examining the architecture of peristyles in conjunction with the paintings, sculptural ensembles, and other features that adorned them. This synthetic approach to the material remains allows for an examination of peristyles as lived spaces rather than as collections of disparate decorative elements. The dissertation is divided into four chapters, each focusing on a specific problem related to the design and function of peristyles. The first chapter presents the characteristic architectural and decorative features of true, or fully colonnaded, peristyles in Pompeian houses. The second chapter consists of two case studies of true peristyles that demonstrate the role and function of the true peristyle within the Pompeian house. These case studies articulate the function of the peristyle relating to issues of status, access, and display in the House of the Vettii (VI.15.I) and the House of the Lovers (I.10.11). The third chapter addresses the architectural and decorative features of truncated peristyles, or those that are not fully colonnaded. This chapter also addresses differences in size, architecture, and decoration between true and truncated peristyles. The fourth chapter uses the truncated peristyles of the House of Marcus Lucretius (IX.3.5) and House of the Vettii (VI.15.1) as case studies to assess the various roles of truncated peristyles within the domestic setting. Together, these chapters bring about a more complete understanding of the social and aesthetic function of Pompeian residences and how domestic art and architecture shaped the experience of the viewer, enhanced the prestige of the owner, and affirmed social hierarchy.

Conservation Design Guidelines for Botanic Gardens

Houston, C. Craig 01 December 2009 (has links)
Botanic gardens worldwide are asked to be centers of conservation. However, little is written about conservation-specific planning and design forms botanic gardens should use to fulfill this assignment. After looking at the history of botanic gardens, with a focus on the purpose/design relationship, examining design guidelines suggested in and inferred from the literature, and presenting habitat conservation principles and sustainable construction guidelines from other areas of practice, the author developed conservation design guidelines for botanic gardens focused on conservation. The guidelines address the following five categories: (1) Mission Statement and Site Character, (2) Presentation of Native Habitats, (3) Presentation of Native Plants in Man-made Landscapes, (4) Sustainable Practices in Daily Operations, and (5) Educational Components. To illustrate the guidelines, they were applied in a hypothetical, conceptual redesign of the Belize Botanic Gardens, located near San Ignacio, Belize.

Rol van skoolbestuur in die implementering van 'n effektiewe dissiplinebeleid op laerskoolvlak in die Suid-Kaap / The role of school management in the implementation of an effective discipline policy at primary schools in the Southern Cape

Groenewald, Sharlton Delmaine 11 September 2019 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans, with abstracts in Afrikaans, English and Xhosa / Dissipline in skole en leerders se uitslae het sedert 1994 baie verswak. / The systemic test results shows that since 1994, discipline in schools and amongst learners has drastically deteriorated. Assaults on educators on a daily basis reach the news, which leaves a bad image to the world on the state of education in South Africa. This study investigates the role that school management teams can play to put an effective discipline policy in place to improve the behaviour of learners. The study found that schools have acquired policies on school discipline that were developed by an external company. Educators, learners and parents were not involved in the development thereof and for this reason they do not take ownership of it. It has come to light that educators use different methods, sometimes even unethical and illegal, to discipline learners. They focus on discipline (punitive) instead of trying to correct the behaviour of the learner (remedial). The study gives recommendations on what school management teams can do with guidelines on how to develop an effective discipline policy. / Iziphumo zibonisa ukuba ukususela ngo-1994 ukuqeqeshwa ezikolweni kwaye abafundi baye bahlaselwa kakhulu. 安德魯˙馬維爾的《花園》、《鋤草者對上花園》和《論艾波頓莊園》詩中園藝對自然的影響 / The influence of art on nature in the garden in Andrew Marvell’s “The Garden,” “The Mower Against Gardens,” and “Upon Appleton House”

楊馥后, Yang, Fu Hou Unknown Date (has links)
The garden, as a distinctive type of architectural art based upon nature, recurs in Andrew Marvell’s poetry and Marvell’s attitude toward the influence of art on nature in the garden has been considered quite ambivalent. To clarify how Marvell decides whether the gardener is impairing or repairing nature, this thesis proposes to study the influences of gardening on nature in “The Garden,” “The Mower Against Gardens,” and “Upon Appleton House” by examining how the gardener’s tasks in the poems are interpreted in the seventeenth-century treatises on horticulture. This thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter One reviews critical opinions and introduces the seventeenth-century treatises on horticulture that we will consult. Chapter Two concentrates on the Mower’s criticism of gardening in “The Mower Against Gardens.” In this chapter, we will examine the gardener’s tasks and explore whether artists should change nature and imitate God in the Mower’s view. Chapter Three concentrates on Marvell’s admiration for gardening in “The Garden” and “Upon Appleton House.” In this chapter, we will examine the gardener’s tasks and explore whether artists should organize nature and recreate paradise in Marvell’s view. Finally, the last chapter will conclude by showing how the Mower’s opinions and Marvell’s opinions about gardening complement each other, and commenting on Marvell’s attitude toward the influence of art on nature in general. It is hoped that an exploration of the influences of gardening on nature in “The Garden,” “The Mower Against Gardens,” and “Upon Appleton House” will clarify Marvell’s attitude toward gardening as well as his attitude toward art and nature and show that Marvell’s attitude is not as ambivalent as it appears.
