Community College Student Retention and Completion based on Financial Expenditures and Hispanic-Serving Status

Da Silva, Jose E. 05 1900 (has links)
Despite declining community college funding being allocated increasingly on the basis of student success, U.S. community college student retention and completion rates over the past decade have either remained steady or decreased, especially for Latino students. Using descriptive statistics and multiple regression models with secondary data procured from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), I analyzed student success rates—full time student retention and completion rates—based on community college financial allocations and Hispanic-serving institution (HSI) status. To equitably analyze community colleges in the sample (n = 909), I separated them into four groups based on institutional size as defined by the Carnegie Classification. Descriptive results indicated that instructional divisions spent an average of 43% of the college's total allocated budget—often more than three times the allocated budget of any other division. Regression results indicated that instructional expenditures had the most consistent impact on student success regardless of college size and that scholarship expenditures and academic support expenditures generally had a negative impact on student retention and completion rates. Regarding Latino student success in particular, findings indicated that the manner in which colleges allocated their funds impacted only small and medium-sized community colleges. Of the nine different types of institutional expenditures, only student services expenditures and public services expenditures had a statistically significant impact on Latino student success. Additionally regression analysis indicated that community college HSI status did not have a large impact on overall full-time student retention and completion rates but did have a significant impact on full-time Hispanic student retention and completion rates for all institution sizes. Findings of this study confirmed that HSI status does impact Latino student success in public community colleges. This finding is consistent with prior studies on the positive impact of instructional expenditures on student success rates. Further research on the specific elements within these expenditure areas is needed to capture how or why they are having this impact on student success. Current and prospective Latino students and their parents seeking to identify higher education institutions conducive to students' academic success should be aware of such findings as they conduct the college search process.

Zakládání rodiny u vysokoškolaček v souvislostech české rodinné politiky / Starting a family of czech university-educated women in the context of czech family policy

Knotová, Rudolfína January 2014 (has links)
This master thesis "Undergraduates establishing their families in the context of the family policy in the Czech Republic" offers a new view upon a dilemma of college-educated women within the Czech society in establishing their families - it is focused on the parenthood strategy during the university studies. The thesis provides analysis of both positive and negative aspects of the parenthood decision and it investigates what sort of support is given to the undergraduate mothers in the Czech Republic. Measures that could be introduced to the framework of family policy in order to create suitable conditions for the undergraduates establishing their families during the studies are proposed. Subjective views of seven respondents, describing their life as an undergraduate mothers, are included in the analytical part to help approach the undergraduate parenthood strategy development. The key underlaying basis for this thesis is the assumption that undergraduate parenthood could be a suitable life strategy for a number of women undergraduates, should the government support improve.

Omcirk, Vilém January 2018 (has links)
This dissertation thesis deals with the use of full-time Masters' graduates of the Physical Education and Sport study program at Faculty of Physical Education and Sport at Charles University on the labor market. In the theoretical part a review of the current state of knowledge about the use of graduates on the labor market was completed, especially university graduates. On the basis of this review the construct of the use of Charles University Faculty of Physical Education and Sport graduate was operationalized and the main tool of the survey, the electronic questionnaire, was compiled. The basic set of the survey was formed by the graduates of the full-time Masters' studies program between the years 2010 and 2015 in the fields of Secondary School Teaching (double-subject), Physical Education and Sport (single-subject), Military Physical Education and Sports Management. 346 responses from 671 questionnaires were obtained (52% return rate). In the result part collected data was first analyzed by the chi-square test on the basis of 3 identification variables (gender of the respondents, field of study and year of graduation) and subsequently individual results of the survey were presented. These results were mainly related to respondents' transition to the labor market after having finished Masters'...

Poverty Levels and Dual Enrollment Demographics and their Effect on Mississippi High School Graduation Rates

Powell, Amanda Leigh McCarter 02 May 2009 (has links)
Despite the fact that education plays a vital role in the success of an individual and society as a whole, it is estimated that 1 of every 4 students will not receive a high school diploma four years after starting ninth grade. In an effort to decrease dropout rates and increase graduation rates of high school students, educators are searching for nontraditional methods to increase student achievement. One such method, dual enrollment, involves community colleges in the role as facilitators. While preliminary research indicates a relationship between dually enrolled students and high school graduation, additional data is needed on student demographics and achievement. To build and improve upon the dual enrollment programs of Mississippi’s community colleges, it will be important to know the participation levels and their effect on graduation rates. The purpose of this study was twoold: 1)To examine the proportions of students participating in Mississippi Community College Dual Enrollment Programs based on various demographics. 2)To determine the degree to which Mississippi Community College Dual Enrollment demographics and poverty levels of Mississippi public schools affect high school graduation rates of Mississippi’s Community College Districts. Data were obtained from the State Board of Community and Junior Colleges and the Mississippi Department of Education. Demographic variables chosen for the study included gender, race, curriculum and poverty level. Data from each public school was grouped according to the corresponding community college district, allowing the researcher to better establish the proportions of students participating in dual enrollment and the poverty level of public school students within the district. These proportions were then analyzed to find correlation between demographics and graduation rates of the community college district. Results indicate a low overall percentage of students participating in dual enrollment and disproportioned percentages between community college districts. Regression analyses indicate that race, gender and curriculum did not contribute significantly to the prediction of graduation rate. However, high poverty levels did show a significant relationship to lower graduation rates. Additionally, in every district females were dually enrolled at rates higher than males, and students were enrolled in academic courses notably more than technical/vocational courses.

Visionary leadership strategies implemented by principals at good performing schools to improve the pass rate in grade 12

Sobunkola, Emmanuel Adesola 02 1900 (has links)
Abstracts in English, Zulu and Swazi / This study aimed to investigate and find strategies that might improve School A's Grade 12 results through the principal's visionary leadership. The theoretical framework that informed this study was the school principal as a visionary leader, which plays a critical role in ensuring the quality of teaching and learning is improved by providing necessary resources for teachers and learners and creating a sound culture of teaching-learning. Upper Echelon Theory's effectiveness is based on strategic choices by visionary leadership and school performance principles that served as the theoretical framework. A qualitative research approach was used for this study, as it allowed the researcher to conduct in-depth interviews with ten school principals in Ehlanzeni District, Mpumalanga, and examined relevant documents to collect data. The research indicates that most schools acknowledge the importance of visionary leadership and proved that there were many execution gaps in implementing the intervention strategies that needed to be addressed, such as lack of effective visionary leadership, lack of unity, support to teachers, monitoring of teaching and learning and recruiting quality teachers in Grade 12. The study recommends that school principals need to implement more effective leadership, strategic planning and implementation of policy, communication, parental involvement accountability, effective monitoring and placement of quality teachers to teach Grade 12 learners. / Izindlela ezsetshenziswa ngothisha-nhloko abanobuholi obubhekela phambili ekwenzeni ncono izinga lokuphumelela ebangeni leshumi nambili kuzikole ezinemiphumela emihle. Strategy practices and praxis: a case of selected South African Business School alumni

Ngwenya, Amkela 01 1900 (has links)
Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and Zulu / This integrated study examined the nexus between the theory and the practice of strategy. Given the nature of modern-day public and private business enterprises in South Africa and the rest of the world, management education should equip practitioners with knowledge and skills suitable for complex, dynamic, eclectic, and uncertain practice contexts. That is, management education should be playing a critical role in shaping and guiding the business community in the ‘management’ and ‘administration’ of business in the country. However, criticisms in management literature suggest that management education is not relevant to practice. Despite such criticisms, there is relatively little empirical evidence in the country on practitioners’ experiences with the relevance to practice of their management education in general and strategy education in particular. To this end, this study set out to develop a better understanding of the dynamic and nuanced interplay between strategy theory and strategy practice through a survey and interviews with selected business school alumni in professional practice. Statistical analyses were performed on quantitative data, while thematic analysis was performed on qualitative data. The survey findings of the study reveal a positive and significant relationship between academic rigour and practical relevance of strategy theory, while phenomenological findings reveal that practical relevance of strategy theory is largely constructed by practitioners according to their contextual demands. Strategic management appears to rest on the dynamic interplay between strategy theory and strategy practice within a complex and eclectic management environment. Towards vocational translation in German studies in Nigeria and beyond

Oyetoyan, Oludamilola Iyadunni 30 August 2016 (has links) (PDF)
