Modelling and optimal control of the market of a telecommunications operator

A South African GSM telecommunications market consisting of two incumbents and an entering third player, is modelled utilising a non-linear, system dynamics approach. The model calculates subscriber choice based on a calculated utility. The utility is used to obtain a probability which is fed into a Bass type differential equation relating the different states in the model to their time derivatives. The model encapsulates all the prominent postpaid price plans in the market, as well as five different demographic market segments. Model Predictive Control is used to synthesise a linear feedback controller which uses the observed market state to optimally determine a price time series for one of the operators’ products. The series will maximise Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) for the operator over the simulation time interval. Taste and Odor Event Dynamics of a Midwestern Freshwater Reservoir

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Eagle Creek Reservoir (ECR), located in the Midwestern U.S., is a freshwater limnic system plagued by seasonal Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) which generate water-fouling Geosmin (GSM) and 2-Methylisoborneol (MIB) Taste and Odor (T&O) compounds. Past investigations of T&O event dynamics have identified Actinomycetes as responsible for MIB production and several genera of cyanobacteria for GSM production. During 2018, a temporally and spatially expansive sampling regimen of the reservoir was carried out and a battery of biological, chemical, physical, and hyperspectral experiments performed. The resulting data was analyzed using time series, cross-correlation, lag time, and multivariate analyses as well as machine learning algorithms to pick apart and interrogate any relationships between HABs, T&O events, and environmental parameters. The results show that local weather and watershed conditions exert significant control over the state of the reservoir and the behavior of the algal community. GSM and MIB peaked during early May under well-mixed, cold, and nutrient-rich water column conditions, then declined under summer thermal stratification before making a small resurgence during late season mixing. Bloom die-off and decay was effectively ruled out as a mechanism controlling T&O concentrations, and no links were found between T&O concentrations and algal biomass. Strong evidence was found that GSM/MIB concentrations were a response by bloom microbes to changing nutrient conditions within the reservoir, and it was determined that nutrient fluxes from the watershed 30-40 days prior to peak T&O concentrations are likely instrumental in the development of the slow- ix growing microbes characteristic of the reservoir. Attempts were made to assess spatial and temporal variability but no significant spatial differences were identified; differences between sampling sites were far smaller than differences between different sampling dates. The findings here add to the growing body of literature showing T&O and HAB dynamics are more closely linked to the relative abundance and speciation of nutrients than other parameters. Additionally, these findings carry important implications for the management of ECR and other similar freshwater reservoirs while highlighting the importance of reducing watershed eutrophication.

All over the world, societies are facing rapidly aging populations combined with a growing number of patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease (AD). One focus in pharmaceutical research to address this issue is on the reduction of the longer amyloid-β (Aβ) fragments in the brain by modulation of γ-secretase, a membrane-bound protease. R-Flurbiprofen (tarenflurbil) was studied in this regard but failed to show significant improvement in AD patients in a phase 3 clinical trial. This was mainly attributed to its low ability to cross the blood–brain barrier (BBB). Here, we present the synthesis and in vitro evaluation of a racemic meta-carborane analogue of flurbiprofen. By introducing the carborane moiety, the hydrophobicity could be shifted into a more favourable range for the penetration of the blood–brain barrier, evident by a logD7.4 value of 2.0. Furthermore, our analogue retained γ-secretase modulator activity in comparison to racemic flurbiprofen in a cell-based assay. These findings demonstrate the potential of carboranes as phenyl mimetics also in AD research.

El presente proyecto de tesis propone la implementación de un sistema de rastreo alternativo a los existentes en el mercado. Esta propuesta se da debido a que los sistemas de rastreo de vehículos actuales basados en transmisión satelital tiene un costo operativo alto, mientras que los basados en transmisión por la red celular tienen un costo operativo bajo, pero se encuentran limitados a la disponibilidad del servicio celular. Por ello se plantea la alternativa de integrar estas dos tecnologías de transmisión formando un sistema de bajo costo, pero a la vez confiable. Para la implementación de este proyecto se ha hecho uso de las tecnologías de comunicación celular GSM y satelital, adicionalmente al Sistema de Posicionamiento Global (GPS). Además para la programación del equipo se realizó mediante lenguaje de programación Java junto con comandos de comunicación ATcommands.

Analysis of a wireless cell with multiple service classes under an aggregate sharing scheme

An analytic framework is devised for the performance modelling and evaluation of a wireless Global System for Mobile Telecommunication (GSM) cell with General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) supporting both multiple class voice and data services, respectively, under an aggregate sharing scheme (ASS). The investigation focuses on the study of a proposed GE/GE/c/N/PR/CBS queueing system with c (¿1) servers, finite capacity, N (¿c), generalised exponential (GE) GSM/GPRS interarrival and service times under pre-emptive resume (PR) priority rule and complete buffer sharing (CBS) scheme. The principle of maximum entropy (ME) is used t ocharacterise new closed form expressions for the state and blocking probabilities, subject to appropriate GE-type queueing theoretic constraints per class. Typical numerical examples are included to validate the ME solution against simulation at 95% confidence intervals and study the effect of external GMS/GPRS bursty traffic upon the performance of the cell.

Design and Characterization of RFIC Voltage Controlled Oscillators in Silicon Germanium HBT and Submicron MOS Technologies

Advances in wireless technology have recently led to the potential for higher data rates and greater functionality. Wireless home and business networks and 3G and 4G cellular phone systems are promising technologies striving for market acceptance, requiring low-cost, low-power, and compact solutions. One approach to meet these demands is system-on-a-chip (SoC) integration, where RF/analog and digital circuitry reside on the same chip, creating a mixed-signal environment. Concurrently, there is tremendous incentive to utilize Si-based technologies to leverage existing fabrication and design infrastructure and the corresponding economies of scale. While the SoC approach is attractive, it presents major challenges for circuit designers, particularly in the design of monolithic voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs). VCOs are important components in the up or downconversion of RF signals in wireless transceivers. VCOs must have very low phase noise and spurious emissions, and be extremely power efficient to meet system requirements. To meet these specifications, VCOs require high-quality factor (Q) tank circuits and reduction of noise from active devices; however, the lack of high-quality monolithic inductors, along with low noise transistors in traditional Si technologies, has been a limiting factor. This thesis presents the design, characterization, and comparison of three monolithic 3-4 GHz VCOs and an integrated 5-6 GHz VCO with tunable polyphase outputs. Each VCO is designed around a differential -G_{M} core with an LC tank circuit. The circuits exploit two Si-based device technologies: Silicon Germanium (SiGe) Heterojunction Bipolar Transistors (HBTs) for a cross-coupled collectors circuit and Graded-Channel MOS (GC-MOS) transistors for a complementary (CMOS) implementation. The circuits were fabricated using the Motorola 0.4 μm CDR1 SiGe BiCMOS process, which consists of four interconnected metal layers and a thick copper (10 μm) metal bump layer for improved inductive components. The VCO implementations are targeted to meet the stringent phase noise specifications for the GSM/EGSM 3G cellular standard. The specifications state that the VCO output cannot exceed -162 dBc/Hz sideband noise at 20 MHz offset from the carrier. Simultaneously, oscillators must be designed to address other system level effects, such as feed-through of the local oscillator (LO). LO feed-through directly results in self-mixing in direct conversion receivers, which gives rise to unwanted corrupting DC offsets. Therefore, a system-level strategy is employed to avoid such issues. For example, multiplying the oscillator frequency by two or four times can help avoid self-mixing during downconversion by moving the LO out of the bandwidth of the RF front-end. Meanwhile, direct conversion or low-IF (intermediate frequency) receiver architectures utilize in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) downconversion signal recovery and image rejection. Any imbalance between the I and Q channels can result in an increase in bit-error-rate (BER) and/or decrease in the image rejection ratio (IRR). To compensate for such an imbalance, an integrated tunable polyphase filter is implemented with a VCO. Control voltages between the differential I and Q channels can be individually controlled to help compensate for I/Q mismatches. This thesis includes an introduction to design flow and layout strategies for oscillator implementations. A detailed comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of the SiGe HBTs and GC-MOS device in 3-4 GHz VCOs is presented. In addition, an overview of full-wave electromagnetic characterization of differential dual inductors is given. The oscillators are characterized for tuning range, output power, and phase noise. Finally, new measurement techniques for the 5-6 GHz VCO with a tunable polyphase filter are explored. A comparison between the time and frequency approaches is also offered. / Master of Science
