Manica, Tatiana Czornabay January 2012 (has links)
Write about the presence of women in history and facts that have marked the humanity is not a simple task, because the complexity begins in the Act of generating new life and that certainly will follow and will have strong influence in the construction of the identity of this generation. The construction of myths, heroes and heroines have always been present in the human imagination, and when they are found its characteristics in a woman as Anita Garibaldi, is of great interest to your study. So we opted for this theme in this Dissertation. In the novels, in the miniseries and movies that tell the life of this character, there are divergent factors and similarities to be analyzed. The behavior, space, time, are parts of the narrative structure that trigger doubts about the real and the fictional. The Bakhtin's dialogism contributes to clarify some attitudes of narrators to with the plot that reproduce, because the life of Anita Garibaldi, along with her husband Giuseppe Garibaldi is full of loopholes. The overall goal of this dissertation is to: analyze the representation of persona/character Anita Garibaldi in narratives of Wolfgang Ludwig Rau, Walter Zumblick, a. Garibaldi and Paulo Markun has. They are compared and analysed on two moments from two approaches: the macro analysis and microanálise of the work, noting its entirety, as are narrated the plot, time, space and the description of the character. The methodology consists of a case study with descriptive qualitative analysis, accomplished using content analysis technique. The facts are divided into four categories for the achievement of microanálise. Final considerations that, faced with the meanings set found in the character Anita Garibaldi, his personality presents facets unknown and doubt they deserve authentic representation and research. / Submitted by Rogele Pinheiro (rogele.pinheiro@unisul.br) on 2018-01-17T17:07:49Z No. of bitstreams: 1 104842_Tatiana.pdf: 4757420 bytes, checksum: 37dd71ca2301199882b3a9b46da5efb8 (MD5) / Approved for entry into archive by Gheovana Figueiredo (gheovana.figueiredo@unisul.br) on 2018-01-17T17:22:13Z (GMT) No. of bitstreams: 1 104842_Tatiana.pdf: 4757420 bytes, checksum: 37dd71ca2301199882b3a9b46da5efb8 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2018-01-17T17:22:13Z (GMT).

Recreational carrying capacity in park planning : the case of Garibaldi Provincial Park

Graves, Paul Edwin January 1991 (has links)
This thesis explores Recreational Carrying Capacity (RCC). The investigation looks at the theory of RCC, and trends in recreational use and management to make a first estimate of the RCC of Garibaldi Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada. An extensive literature review is used to synthesize the social, ecological and managerial factors called for in RCC theory; and to summarize relevant aspects of park policy and recreation trends. This review serves as a foundation for adapting a RCC model from the literature. The model is then used to estimate the RCC of the developed backcountry areas of Garibaldi Provincial Park. The emphasis of the thesis is on the ecological component of RCC: a bio-climatic zone inventory, a soil capability survey, and a visual impact assessment are all undertaken to build an estimate of the ecological sensitivity of the study area. The model also uses social influences and BC Parks policy to assist in the formulation of the RCC for the study area. The RCC estimates derived are not precise because of weaknesses in the data base. Nevertheless, the estimates do indicate that the most desirable areas for recreation within Garibaldi Park have reached or exceeded the capability of the biophysical resources of those areas to sustain the recreational activities undertaken. As important as the RCC estimation is the identification of biophysical limitations of the study area. These limitations call for careful site selection in the development and management of Garibaldi Park to protect the biophysical resources which attract recreational use. If the model is to be of greater assistance in park planning and management then more precision is required in the investigation. Increased precision requires dividing the broad bio-climatic zones into sub-zones or micro-zones to allow site and route selection for managing the study area. RCC theory and the RCC model used are useful as planning tools because of the comprehensiveness required by the theory and the explicitness of the values used within the model. However, this comprehensiveness demands a large data base which is not available in the case study of Garibaldi Park. This points to the need for further research if RCC theory and the model used are to be of utility to park planning in B.C. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), School of / Graduate

According to the writer, after having had access to Garibaldi's manuscript, his objective was to comment and publish such pages. Working with the hypothesis that Dumas was more present in the book than he actually said and Dumas saw in the character the romantic hero. So it was been decided to develop the problematic of production in two chapters. The first one presents the relation between the two personages and in him it is perceived that Dumas went in search of Garibaldi with the interest to publish his memories after a financial crisis passed by the literate and the repercussion of the done of the general. In spite of this, he saw in Garibaldi one man above the others, which led him to want to be with him for four years. Garibaldi was already a character known and exalted for his heroic deeds, but it was the writer who gave him more visibility. In the second chapter, it was been tried to think the problematic of the production between the textuality and the materiality of the work, presenting what is written and its scenery. Still, it came to be observed that the memories of 1860 approach the narrative techniques of Dumas. This was possible through the study of Garibaldi's memoirs published in 1859 in New York by Theodore Dwight and the 1888 edition published by Bàrbera. Despite the similarity between these editions and that of Dumas, with their differences, the one had more repercussion. We will notice that there have been many translations and re-editions.

I huvudet på Garibaldi : En studie kring skildringen av Garibaldi i biografier / In the head of Garibaldi : A study about the portrayal of Garibaldi in biographies

Jonsson, Cristoffer January 2010 (has links)

This essay is called In the head of Garibaldi – a study about the portrayal of Garibaldi in biographies and focuses on the literary portrayal of Garibaldi in biographies published in the early 20th century and the early 21st century. The purpose of the essay is to describe the possible changes in the way of portraying Garibaldi in biographies and compare the portraying to the portrayal of Garibaldi that Garibaldi himself gives in the American translation of his memoirs, which were published in New York 1859.I have in this study used a constructivist approach with focus on the attributes, ideals and roles of Garibaldi. Research and thoughts from a wide field of science has been used, for example the works on nationalism by Elie Kedourie and Ernest Gellner. The thoughts on biographies as a scientific genre as described in the anthologies Att skriva människan (Ambjörnsson, Ringby & Åkerman red.) and Med livet som insats (Rosengren & Östling red.) has also been of the utmost importance of the study. The results of the study shows that there has been changes in the way of portraying Garibaldi in biographies, as showed in the more unbiased portrayals in the newer biographies. A larger focus on criticism of the sources is also apparent in the newer biographies. In a comparison between the biographies and Garibaldi‟s memoirs it stands clear that the memoirs and the biographies portrays and depicts the myth of Garibaldi, with more or less focus on fiction.

Conflict management in BC provincial parks: a case study of mountain biking in Garibaldi Park

Thompson, Paul David 05 1900 (has links)
At the same time resources are becoming more scarce there is an increase in the use of parks, wilderness and other natural environments for recreational purposes. This is evident in British Columbia where much of provincial parks planning is concerned with the accommodation of an ever increasing diversity of outdoor recreation activities. For a variety of reasons the people engaged in those activities do not always get along therefore resolving these social conflicts is becoming an ever larger part of recreation resource planners’ and managers’ jobs. The problem with conflict management in outdoor recreation is that the methods which are commonly used do not address the sources of conflict. Even though it is the recreationists who are experiencing conflict the focus remains on managing the resource. The traditional conflict management prescription is to separate activities that are considered to be incompatible. This action is necessary in some cases but it can often exacerbate the conflict. Since the reasons for conflict are largely sociological and psychological it is necessary that the groups in conflict get together to find a solution. Conflict management methods based on the spatial separation of activities that do not include this step will not be as effective as those that do. This thesis establishes a number of weaknesses in activity based conflict prevention by examining both the sources of conflict in outdoor recreation and the methods of conflict management which are traditionally used. These weaknesses are then considered in a two part examination. First, the conflict management policies of BC Parks are examined. Second, a closer look is taken at a specific conflict issue: the Garibaldi Master Plan and its treatment of the issue of mountain biking in the park. In general, without a formal conflict management policy in place users of BC’S provincial parks who find themselves in conflict with other users can not be assured that the sources of conflict will be addressed. In the Garibaldi Park case study, BC Parks focused on managing the resource rather than managing the social conflict that was occurring. They took steps in the right direction but failed to take the most crucial step which is getting the parties in conflict talking to each other. Even though the sources of conflict are recognized they are not the prime consideration in resolving the conflict.

Holocene glacier activity in the central British Columbia Coast Mountains

Harvey, Jillian Elizabeth 18 August 2011 (has links)
The intent of the research described in this thesis was to reconstruct and document Holocene glacier activity in the central British Columbia Coast Mountains. Despite ongoing efforts to describe glacier fluctuations in the southern and northern Coast Mountains, only limited attention has been directed to revealing the Holocene histories of glaciers in the central Coast Mountain region. The goals of this research were twofold: firstly, to describe mid-Holocene glacier advances at five remote glacier sites in the central Coast Mountains, and secondly, to detail Little Ice Age (LIA) glacier fluctuations at four glacier sites in the central Coast Mountains. The mid-Holocene behaviour of Canoe, Fyles, Jacobsen, Tchaikazan and Icemaker glaciers was investigated using dendroglaciological techniques and stratigraphic analysis. Subfossil wood evidence suggests these glaciers were expanding into standing forests prior to 6.63, 4.90 and 4.20 ka. Stratigraphically constrained woody detritus at Fyles Glacier records the progradational history of a Gilbert-type delta forming in response to glacial expansion between 7.02-5.47 ka. Glacial expansion occurring between 7.50-4.00 ka has regional correlatives, suggesting coherent broad-scale climate forcing mechanisms influenced glacial mass balance at this time. Insight into the LIA behaviour of central Coast Mountain glaciers was provided by conducting lichenometric surveys of Rhizocarpon spp. across LIA moraines at Pattullo, Fyles, Deer Lake and Jacobsen glaciers. The presence of a second, lesser known, lichen species at some sites necessitated the construction of a Xanthoria elegans growth curve. An assessment of lichenometric measurements from the southern and central Coast Mountains provided the opportunity to build a X. elegans growth curve constrained by 18 control points. Lichenometric surveys revealed dominant moraine building episodes at 890-1020, 1280-1320, 1490-1530, 1680-1720, 1780 and 1820-1870 AD, highlighting the complex nature of glacier fluctuations during the LIA. A regional subalpine fir tree-ring chronology (1610-2010 AD) was developed from four stands located in the central Coast Mountains for dendroclimatological investigations. Correlation analyses show that the radial growth of trees corresponded to variations in the mean June/July air temperature and May 1st snowpack. This relationship was used to reconstruct these climate parameters for the duration of the tree-ring record. Intervals of cooler summer air temperatures and above average snowpack were found to broadly correspond with dominant periods of LIA moraine building from 1610-1930 AD. This reconstruction of mid-Holocene and LIA glacial history offered insights consistent with the emerging record of glacial activity described for the southern Coast Mountain glaciers. It also provides the first evidence for mid-Holocene glacial expansion in the central and northern Coast Mountains. The application of lichenometry in the central Coast Mountains documents the regional LIA behaviour of glaciers and the construction of a Xanthoria elegans growth curve for the Coast Mountains provides a framework for future geobotanical dating using this species. / Graduate

Reus, Carla Letícia January 2009 (has links)
