The invention of moffie life in Cape Town, South Africa

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD (Anthropology) / This dissertation is an ethnography of the figure of the moffie as a performance of same sex desire amongst gender non-conforming men, as it is celebrated in the 'coloured' ('coloured' is a constructed racial category, similar to 'white' and 'black' designated onto South Africans during the system of legislated racial segregation) townships of Cape Town. In this dissertation I demonstrate that the moffie is central to the lives of gender non-conforming men living in the 'coloured' townships of Cape Town. Through historical and contemporary ethnography, I show how moffie life is a representation of same sex desire amongst men that is highly visible. I reveal how moffie life is socially sanctioned through feminine self-styling, embodied through that of the gay hairdresser, annual gay beauty pageant competitions and Gay Pride events.

Então voltei e fiz um projeto para estudar a Parada de São Paulo; b) participação - com o projeto em mãos e já matriculado no curso de doutorado, fui à Parada com a intenção de pesquisar, coletar dados, tirar fotos, conversar com as pessoas, perguntar e ... terminei dentro da festa, dançando, beijando, enfim, participando do acontecimento; c) envolvimento a partir desse momento me envolvi, fui como fotógrafo à Parada, participei, conversei com as pessoas, escutei histórias, mas como um paradista, ou seja, já estava dentro dela para viver, sentir e contar as minhas experiências e trans-formações. Para escrever a narrativa de minhas caminhadas, considerei a Parada como um misto de três pilares discursivos distintos que se mesclam e estão em constante movimento. O primeiro deles é o discurso da rememoração que tem uma data, 28 de junho, para rememorar um fato a agressão a gays no Bar novaiorquino Stonewall Inn em 1969. Assim, a partir desse fato histórico, podemos reivindicar nossos direitos. Esse discurso tem um caráter sério, político e consiste em olhar um fato passado e mostrar que o preconceito continua de outros modos na sociedade atual. O segundo pilar discursivo é o da comemoração que, além de lembrar o passado, a agressão aos gays e a rebelião que houve no bar, volta ao presente para não esquecer os gestos heróicos do orgulho de ser gay. A festa, que é coletiva, junta os dois outros discursos, isto é, ela rememora e comemora ao mesmo tempo com o grotesco, a música alta, a dança, o riso, as extravagâncias, as cores e a carnavalização que exagera tudo, excede e trans-borda a cidade / Abstract: This narrative research might be divided into three levels, namely: a) observation I went to the Gay Parade as an external observer, curious, to see and check what I had heard, that is that the event be nothing more than a fags carnival party. Then I returned and developed a project to study the São Paulo Gay Pride Parade; b) participation having written the project and enrolled in the doctorate course, I went to the Parade in order to research, collect data, take pictures, talk with people, ask for information and I ended up inside the party, dancing, kissing, participating in the event; c) involvement from this moment on, I immersed myself. I went as a photographer to the Parade, I participated, I chatted with people, I listened to their stories, but as a parader. That is, I had already entered the Parade to live, feel and share my experiences and trans-formations. To write down the narrative of my paths, I considered the Parade as a mix of three distinct discursive pillars, which are interwoven and in continuous movement. The first one is the remembrance discourse, which remembers the date of June 28 and the aggression committed against gays in the New York bar, Stonewall Inn, in 1969. Thus, from such an historical fact, we can claim our rights. This discourse has a serious, political feature, and consists in looking at a past fact and showing that the prejudice is still ongoing, merely assuming other faces in contemporary society. The second discursive pillar is that of commemoration, which, besides remembering the fact the aggression to gays and the insurrection in the bar comes back to the present, intending not to forget the heroic gestures of being gay. The party, collective in nature, is connected to the other discourses, that is, it both remembers and by means of the grotesque, the loud music, the dance, the laugh, the extravagances, the colors and the carnavalization that exaggerates and exceeds overflows the city / Doutorado / Linguistica / Doutor em Linguística

Substance Use Patterns and Consequences Among Lesbians, Gays, and Bisexuals

Substance abuse among gays and lesbians may be considered a "neglected area" of drug use research in criminology and criminal justice. In the current study, we seek to address the lack of scientific inquiry on substance use among lesbians, gays, and bisexuals by drawing from an availability sample of 179 lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults to examine substance use patterns as well as the relationship of self-esteem with problems associated with using alcohol and drugs. Results showed consistency in the frequency of tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine use in the past year; however, more gay and bisexual men than gay and bisexual women reported problems stemming from substance use.

Taking It to the Streets: the History of Gay Pride Parades in Dallas, Texas: 1972-1986

This thesis describes the organization of two waves of pride parades in the city of Dallas, Texas. Using more than 40 sources, this work details how LGBT organizers have used pride parades to create a more established place for the LGBT community in greater Dallas culture. This works adds to the study of LGBT history by focusing on an understudied region, the South; as well as focusing on an important symbolic event in LGBT communities, pride parades.

[pt] A dissertação dedica-se a investigar e compreender as opiniões e interpretações elaboradas por diversos segmentos sociais a respeito dos temas suscitados pela Parada do Orgulho LGBT, considerando que o evento propõe um agendamento de questões caras às minorias sexuais na sociedade. O ambiente de investigação foi a Internet e o foco recaiu sobre os discursos a respeito da Parada do Orgulho LGBT da cidade de São Paulo de 2011, presentes em blogs pessoais e sites de notícias. À luz de teorias oriundas da Análise do Discurso, identificaram-se padrões, referentes aos temas mais recorrentes suscitados pela manifestação e às estratégias discursivas relativas a cada tema. Neste processo, o estudo estipulou três categorias de análise, relativas às discussões sobre a pertinência do evento, aos direitos civis de minorias sexuais e ao juízo moral – biológico e religioso – sobre sexualidades não heteronormativas. / [en] The study aims to investigate the opinions and interpretations of readers s comments about the Parada do Orgulho LGBT (LGBT Pride Parade), considering that the event proposes an agenda for sexual minorities demands. The data were collected on the Internet and focused on São Paulo LGBT Pride Parade in 2011, in personal blogs and news websites. From a Discourse Analysis perspective, the study identified patterns, regarding the most recurring discursive strategies adopted in these statements. Three analytic categories have been found, regarding the pertinence of the event, civil rights for sexual minorities and the moral evaluation - both ideological and religious - about non-heteronormative sexualities.

Les fêtes nouvelles. Enquête sur les idéaux de la société ouverte et leur mise en scène : Paris 1981-2014 / The new public celebrations. Inquiry into the ideals of the open society and their staging : Paris 1981-2014

La présente thèse porte sur la mise en place des nouvelles manifestations festives en France, et plus particulièrement à Paris, depuis les années 80. Ces fêtes marquent un déplacement par rapport aux fêtes « traditionnelles » qui étaient en grande partie organisées autour des concepts de sacré et de nation. Nourri par une observation ethnographique de plusieurs années, ce travail met en évidence une multiplicité de facettes des fêtes nouvelles: les processus de conceptualisation et de création par les autorités publiques ; leur gestion et mise en œuvre par des managers culturels ou par des associations et des collectifs ; l’invention de nouvelles formes rituelles ou l’adaptation de plus anciennes ; les mises en scène urbaines et l’emploi des codes distinctifs ; l’appropriation de ces fêtes par la société et les différents débats qu’elles ont soulevés. Chacune des trois parties de la thèse est consacrée à une fête. Une place majeure est réservée à la Fête de la musique, la Marche des fiertés et la Nuit blanche, sans pour autant passer sous silence d’autres fêtes résolument nouvelles et d’envergure, telles que la Capitale européenne de la culture et les Allumées de Nantes, permettant de mieux saisir les mutations qui s’opèrent au niveau européen. Enfin, s’appuyant sur la thèse classique de Durkheim, ce travail propose d’envisager ces fêtes comme points d’entrée pour appréhender les idéaux de la société ouverte. L’intention affirmée des organisateurs de mettre en place une nouvelle conception du vivre ensemble et du lien social, est à bien des égards l’occasion de célébrer une société française et européenne, pacifique, réconciliée et tolérante. / The present thesis examines the installation of new festive events in France, and more particularly in Paris, since the 80s. These celebrations mark a shift in regard to "traditional" celebrations which mostly revolve around the concepts of the sacred and the nation. Nourished by an ethnographic observation of several years, this work highlights a variety of aspects: the process of their invention and their creation and by the public authorities; the supervision of the events by cultural managers or associations and collectives; the invention of new ritual forms and the adaptation of older ones; the design of the urban scenery and the use of distinctive codes; the appropriation of these events fro, the society and the various debates to which they gave rise. Each part of the thesis deals with a celebration in an independent way. The Fête de la musique, the Gay Pride and the Nuit blanche are analyzed here in priority. However, next to them parade also other events, entirely new and ambitious, such as the European Capital of Culture and the Allumées of Nantes which offer a better insight into changes that took place on a European level. Finally, based on Durkheim's classic thesis, this work proposes to consider these festive events as an entry point into a greater inquiry about the ideals of the open society. The asserted intention of the organizers to put in place a new conception of living together and the social bond is in many ways the occasion to celebrate a French and European society, that is peaceful, reconciled and tolerant.
