This thesis examines the interwoven relations of the media portrayal, cultural identity and social polarization in the multicultural city Rotterdam, Netherlands, particularly in response to the Israel-Gaza conflict. By comparing global and local media sources like CNN, Al Jazeera and the television-station TV Rijnmond and the radio-station FunX, this paper gives a detailed insight in how the different cultural groups in Rotterdam interpret and react to media narratives about the conflict. Drawing on a mix of visual content analysis, observational data, and qualitative interviews, the research captures an array of community responses – ranging from passive consumption to active protest.The results indicate that global media portrayals offer different narratives that is interpreted differently by Rotterdam’s ethnic minorities and native Dutch population, which affects community cohesion and social polarization. Local media provides more relatable content, and is playing a crucial role in shaping community responses and fostering group identity. Moreover, this study points out how media rituals and group norms are crucial in interpreting media messages and in shaping cultural identities that connect or divide different community groups.This thesis helps in recognizing the nuanced role that media perform in multicultural urban settings and provides insights into the role of cultural identities amidst geopolitical conflicts. In the paper, recommendations are shared with the aim to enhance social cohesion through more inclusive and balanced media representations.

Denna masteruppsats undersöker människans och världens existentiella förhållande i Harry Martinsons Aniara (1956) och Øyvind Rimbereids ”Solaris korrigert” (2004). Syftet är att analysera hur dessa verk tematiserar människosläktens jordbundenhet och den existentiella krisen som uppstår när människan lämnar sin jordiska tillvaro. Genom en komparativ läsning utifrån Martin Heideggers existentiella begrepp och ekokritiska teorielement belyser uppsatsen de tematiska och formmässiga likheterna mellan verken med fokus på den existentiella ”världen”, historia, teknologi och Jorden. / In this master's thesis, the existential relationship between man and the world is analysed in Harry Martinson's Aniara (1956) and Øyvind Rimbereid's "Solaris korrigert" (2004). The aim is to analyse how these works thematise the earthboundness of the humankind and the existential crisis that arises when humans leave their earthly existence. Through a comparative reading based on Martin Heidegger's existential concepts and ecocritical theory, the paper highlights the thematic and formal similarities between the works, focusing on the existential "world", history, technology and the Earth.

Den här texten är en del av en äventyrsroman för läsare i åldrarna 9-12 år. Den kretsar kring Vega som är i elvaårsåldern. Hon lever i en värld som inte är helt olik vår egen, men där varje individ har en särskild förmåga som bara de har. Hennes vänner har fått sina förmågor redan men Vega väntar fortfarande, hon funderar en del på hur det kommer att bil. Av en händelse hittar hon ett drakägg som måste återföras till en värld bortom hennes egen. Uppsatsens syfte är att närmare undersöka några av narratologins termer. Den litteraturteoretiska inriktningen narratologi beskrivs övergripande, några av dess termer beskrivs mer ingående samt att användningen av dem prövas rent praktiskt i en novellanalys. Novellananlysen sker i ett storyavsnitt och ett diskursavsnittt. För novellananlysen används en novell av Anna-Karin Palm som heter "Öppna ögon". I storyavsnittet undersöks hur begreppen karaktär och händelse beskrivs teoretiskt och hur de kan användas. I avsnittet om diskurs undersöks termerna kronologi, berättare och fokalisation.
