Padrão geográfico de diversificação floral indica novos caminhos envolvidos na especiação do clado neotropical de Sinningia (Gesneriaceae) / Geographic pattern of floral diversification sheds new light on speciation of the neotropical Sinningia clade (Gesneriaceae)

Nogueira, Joice Iamara 31 July 2013 (has links)
Divergent natural selection is a leading force of species differentiation. In flowering plants, pollinator\'s preference is considered to work as selective agent and can contribute to the diversification of floral traits. Because of pollinator role preventing gene flow under sympatric condition, they can also work as a component of reproductive isolation. Here we establish a link between geographic pattern and ecological process of differentiation in floral morphology and pollinator fidelity in Sinningia allagophylla. We sampled floral traits and pollinator frequency across the species geographic ranges. Germination of pollen grains and seed development were also sampled to determine the occurrence of additional reproductive isolation mechanisms in action. We show that floral traits of S. allagophylla present a clear pattern of geographic differentiation. It is possible to sort individuals within three floral types related to the south, southeast and northwest species range. Intermediate floral types occur between south-southeast distribution ranges. Diverse group of pollinators are associated with geographic pattern of floral traits. Hummingbirds are present across the entire geographic range and visit floral types independent of its traits, but bees are more frequent in the boundaries of distribution and show fidelity to one or other phenotype. Under sympatric condition, gene flow occurs between individuals with different floral traits due to hummingbird visits. However, bee preference of phenotypes, reduced pollen germination and seed development of individuals in the contact zones contributed to the maintenance of distinct phenotypes. In conclusion, we considered that ecological mechanisms associated with the plant-pollinator interaction are contributing partially to the differentiation of lineages in Sinningia allagophylla. This information sheds new light to the actual comprehension of speciation within this clade.

The challenges of implementing and sustaining an adult and vocational education curriculum on an isolated island

Bermant, David 25 April 2012 (has links)
The island of Cascara is a dependent overseas territory of a European metropole. Access to the island is currently only by sea though there are plans to construct an airport. To prepare the island for the economic-related activities that will arise from air access, an Adult and Vocational Education Strategy was developed. This Strategy paved the way for the establishment of the island’s Adult and Vocational Education Service and informed the contents of the curriculum it provided. The purpose of this study was to investigate the challenges associated with implementing and sustaining the curriculum on this isolated island. In order to do this, the study examined the curriculum on offer; its current state of implementation and its associated challenges within the Adult and Vocational Education Service; it also investigated the extent to which the current curriculum met the needs of the island by aiding workforce development to support economic growth; and finally, it explored the challenges relating to the sustainability of the Adult and Vocational Education Service in providing a relevant vocational curriculum. A qualitative research approach was adopted using case study methodology. The purposive research sample comprised stakeholders across the public and private sectors at various levels. Qualitative research elicitation instruments were employed to gather data. These included questionnaires, unstructured, semi-structured and focus group interviews. In addition to these instruments, various official documents were analysed and the island’s local print and audio media were used to gather data. The research findings indicated that there needs to be more integration of resources (human, physical and financial) in the provision of adult and vocational learning. The data also showed that the integration of available resources has the potential to aid in more sustainable and meaningful learning that will benefit both the individuals and the economy. The data further suggested that a collaborative approach should aid in stabilising and expanding the provision of adult learning on the island. The need to improve the provision of distance learning opportunities with more internationally accredited courses being offered locally; the need for quality in the provision of learning to be formalised; and the need for the curriculum and staffing structures of the Adult and Vocational Education Service to be reconsidered were also highlighted. The research findings have already begun to serve as the basis for addressing the priorities of the Adult and Vocational Education Service on the island. By informing future learning policy and the contents of the curriculum on offer, the research findings could also potentially benefit the provision of adult and vocational education on other islands, small states and rural communities with limited human and financial resources. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Education Management and Policy Studies / Unrestricted

Influence des facteurs socio-économiques et géographiques sur l'incidence, l'accès aux soins et la survie des femmes atteintes d'un cancer du sein / Influence of socioeconomic factors on incidence, care access, and survival of women with breast cancer

Brevet Gentil, Julie 18 December 2012 (has links)
In developed countries, breast cancer is currently the leading cancer in women in terms of incidence and mortality (standardized rate of 101.5 and 17.7 per 100,000 person-years in 2005, respectively). Many risk factors and prognostic factors have been studied and are well known. Research is under way with regard to every step in the development of breast cancer, but the impact of socio-economic and geographic factors, at the individual and environmental level with regard to the disease have never been studied in France. The general aim of this work was to explore the impact of these factors in different ways to build on our knowledge and to develop practical applications in the primary, secondary or tertiary prevention of breast cancer. In our first study, we showed that women with a low socio-educational level were less likely to have benefited from at least one mammography within the 6 years or at least one gynaecological consultation within the 3 years before the diagnosis of breast cancer. These women also had a more advanced tumour at diagnosis than did women with a higher socio-educational level. These variables also came to light as predictors of a poor prognosis in terms of survival. In our second study, we showed that access to a surgeon specialised in breast cancer surgery, which is associated with better survival, was influenced by the socio-economic level of the patient’s place of residence, as well as the distance between the patient’s home and reference centres for cancer treatment, where the specialised surgeons work. In our third study, we showed that in contrast to many cancers, the incidence of breast cancer was highest in the most socio-economically privileged areas, and this whatever the age of the patient. We have no explanation for this phenomenon, particularly with regard to the youngest age group of women. Finally, the aim of our fourth study, which is currently on-going, is to study at the individual level, using the new European deprivation index adapted to France, to what extent economic wealth and social standing, as well as the proximity of medical services for patients with breast cancer have an impact on tumour stage, access to treatment, treatment techniques and survival.
