Mitigating the impact of gifts-in-kind: an approach to strategic humanitarian response planning using robust facility location

Ingram, Elijah E. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering / Jessica L. Heier Stamm / Gifts-in-kind (GIK) donations negatively affect the humanitarian supply chain at the point of receipt near the disaster site. In any disaster, as much as 50 percent of GIK donations are irrelevant to the relief efforts. This proves to be a significant issue to humanitarian organizations because the quantity and type of future GIK are uncertain, making it difficult to account for GIK donations at the strategic planning level. The result is GIK consuming critical warehouse space and manpower. Additionally, improper treatment of GIK can result in ill-favor of donors and loss of donations (both cash and GIK) and support for the humanitarian organization. This thesis proposes a robust facility location approach that mitigates the impact of GIK by providing storage space for GIK and pre-positions supplies to meet initial demand. The setting of the problem is strategic planning for hurricane relief along the Gulf and Atlantic Coasts of the United States. The approach uses a robust scenario-based method to account for uncertainty in both demand and GIK donations. The model determines the location and number of warehouses in the network, the amount of pre-positioned supplies to meet demand, and the amount of space in each warehouse to alleviate the impact of GIK. The basis of the model is a variant of the covering facility location model that must satisfy all demand and GIK space requirements. A computational study with multiple cost minimizing objective functions illustrates how the model performs with realistic data. The results show that strategic planning in the preparedness phases of the disaster management cycle will significantly mitigate the impact of GIK.

Skeppet - På färd mot evigheten / The ship - On a journey to eternity

Rossin, Alexander January 2019 (has links)
The boat-burials in Scandinavia presents several rich findings in the form of boats, possession and their owners. These boat-burials are reviewed in this work through a lens of maritime archaeology, to connect the possible roles held by the boat itself in context with the placement and nature of the burial gifts deposited around and inside the vessel. The burial grounds in Vendel, Valsgärde, Tuna I Badelunda, Ultuna and Old Uppsala are presented to compare and create context between findings to define a common tradition and cosmology involving the boat-burials in question.

Through the God’s experience that humanity has developed its theological reflection and sensed the nuances of self-revelation of God to all his work created and could discern what paths to be followed in relation to God, the cosmos and the human being. It was by the God’s experience that humanity approached the sacred and had communion with him. It could recognize God in its divine persons and worship him through Church sprouted of the decisive event of the Incarnation of the Word and his resurrection, from which it was given to mankind the grace of the Holy Spirit. But it was already present with mankind since the creation of the lines of the story. The Holy Spirit is the love of God manifested as mother love, protects, nurtures, corrects, unites and strengthens with his gifts and charisms. He is one for which, in the exercise of his mission, Christ and the kingdom of God come into the world. Mission is fulfilled in and through the Church, the Mystical Body of Christ, being the Holy Spirit its foundation of communion, catholicity and holiness. The Holy Spirit was present in history, of humanity and of the Church in its great moments of transformation, conduting and inspiring his footsteps. However, the experience lacks interpretation, and in the historical process the communion was, sometimes, undone, and the Holy Spirit was also praised by some and forgotten by others, in this case the Church of Christ, was closed to the Holy Spirit. In the second Vatican Council happened the latest historical re-opening of the Church to the Holy Spirit.

Tesis

Parental Gift Giving Behaviour at Christmas: An Exploratory Study

Clarke, Peter, n/a January 2004 (has links)
Christmas is generally described as cultural, ritual and sociological phenomena of devotion, community and consumption. The topic of this dissertation concerns a specific stream of research within the general domain of consumer behaviour. The focal objective of this study is to develop a model and generate theory about parental gift giving behaviour at Christmas. My study is unique because it attempts to model parental gift giving at Christmas in a consumer behaviour context. Consumer behaviour theory suggests that parents seek information about possible gifts, set selection criteria for gift purchase, evaluate alternatives and buy the gifts for their children. Following this broad view of theory, parents respond to children's request behaviour, evaluate the suitability of any requests and purchase the approved or appropriate items as Christmas gifts. Children are encouraged to request any gifts that they desire, and these gift requests are often for specific brands. In general Christmas gifts are selected from children's products and brands and there is extensive debate and research relating to television advertising and children's request behaviour at Christmas. However, parents are not exposed to the same sources of advertising as their children and there is little evidence of research into the very important topics concerning motives, strategies, evaluations and the giving of brands that characterize parents' Christmas gift giving to their children. The significance of this dissertation resides in the development and presentation of a comprehensive model for the conceptualisation of parental gift giving at Christmas, based on antecedents to parents' social roles of gift giving and direct and indirect behavioural outcomes of those gift giving roles. Measures for each of these outcomes are developed and gender effects are also explored. The sample frame was described as a parent with at least one child between the ages of 3-8 years and a survey package was delivered to parents of children from participating schools and kindergartens. There were 2560 surveys distributed, with 450 individual responses representing a return rate of 17.6%. The 450 cases available for analysis were factor analysed and formed into composite and latent variables to facilitate statistical analysis via Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression, which is an appropriate procedure when the relationships are unknown or theoretical. The results of the research have two distinct streams. The first stream relates to the creation and validation of measurement constructs for the concept of Christmas spirit, parental gift giving, request communication, brand benefits and use of information sources, as well as involvement in giving gifts and involvement in giving brands as gifts. The second stream relates to the relationships between variables; the results support the relationships antecedent to the parents' social roles of gift giving. There is a significant relationship of Christmas spirit with involvement in giving gifts and with parental gift giving roles. A significant relationship also exists between involvement in giving gifts and parental gift giving roles. However, there is limited support for propositions related to outcomes of parental gift giving roles where there are significant relations between these roles and Christmas request communication, brand benefits and information sources. There is also a significant, indirect relationship between brand benefits and involvement in giving brands as gifts. As part of the second stream, gender differences were examined; the results show that mothers' Christmas spirit has no effect on their gift giving roles and gift giving roles have no significant effect on request communication and information source usage. On the other hand, the results show that the fathers' gift giving activities reflect the relationships outlined in the parental model. The study has academic implications for sociology and consumer behaviour disciplines and commercial implications for manufacturers, advertisers, brand owners and retailers. Further investigations will be necessary to incorporate other elements into the parental gift-giving model and to extend the theory toward a fuller understanding of the parental Christmas gift giving phenomena.

Friedrich Froebel

Chuang, Ming Ling Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis is to study the theory of play by the 19th century famous German educator Friedrich Wilhelm August Froebel (1782-1852) and its influence in the modern education and art. In his theory, play is the engine that drives child’s learning and is the cornerstone of development. Froebel considered play not only the physiological nature, but also the natural law of gathering experiences and the opportunity of developing brain power. Play is even the core essence of man as a created being and nurturing creativities. He established Kindergarten to encourage children’s self-activity, designed a series of Play Gifts to provide educators means of educating as play. In his pedagogy, family and female, especially mother, caring and nurturing human offspring, are very important in education of man. Overall, he considered children’s life and appearance are signs of unity and existence. To understand self and things and the relationships between them, and to recreate continuously man’s inner self are the goals of man’s life. He considered man’s arts and God’s creations are equally representing each spirit, and believed arts are from man’s inner self just as nature is created by God. His view of connecting arts and inner self affected not only the early childhood education all over the world in late 19th century, but also the design education and the art of architecture from the 20th century onward.

Transformation Of The Morphology Of The Old City Of Sulaimaniyah (northern Iraq) From The Perspective Of Ownership Patterns

Amin, Hanaw Mohammed Taqi Mohammed 01 April 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The main objective of the thesis is to study the forces that built up the morphology of the old city of Sulaimaniyah and the reasons of its existence. It focuses on the morphological elements of property (ownership elements of streets, blocks and parcels) and their existence in spite of the impacts of modernism in the transformation of these elements. Modernity in Sulaimaniyah city affected the city in terms of the transformation of traditional life pattern and traditional structure into modern function. Modern function covers a new administrative system and new commercial functions. The city adapted itself to these new institutions. As a consequence, the power of state displayed itself in the form of building roads, and then the new larger and regular parcels were created to adapt new functions. Furthermore, the study aims to establish the historical evolution of the city starting from its foundation and the periods, which are signified by the introduction of modernism concepts. This study is analyzed through a morphological research depending on the physical elements as quantitative characteristics. It starts with an evolutionary plan analysis, which is a tool of morphological study and covers the old part of the city in macro scale, mezzo scale, and consequently, micro scale. The old fabric of Sulaimaniyah city as organic fabric faced the modernism&#039 / s impact gradually due to the construction of streets. In spite of this fact, preserving old fabric&#039 / s morphology behind the power of ownership pattern is still surviving. In this thesis, typology is another research method, which is used to analyze the evolution of the building fabric of the city in both functional and formal configuration. In addition, a comparison of traditional and modern building types in the old city shows that there are similarities between these types, which suggest that these types are part of the old fabric of the city and they define the morphology of the old city. The study concluded that the morphology of the old city is the product of property in two dimensions (ownership parcels), and the building types on them.
