American consumerism and God's Kingdom economy in a Massachusetts congregation

Lawrence, Priscilla A. 02 May 2022 (has links)
The Community Church of Pepperell in Pepperell, MA has a well-established pattern of fundraising events to support itself and its mission. Replicating the ubiquity of consumerism in American culture, buying and selling is the foundation of church activities, events, celebrations, and even worship itself. This project develops the concept of God’s Kingdom economy as it works to move this congregation, and perhaps others like it, from being controlled by the impulses of American consumerism. This transformation involves laying aside consumption for its own sake, rather using it to caring for our neighbors, serve, and share God’s love. Specialized worship services are created that incorporate the transformative power of testimonies and preaching as a way to reframe excessive church fundraising.

In pursuit of an alternative to the public diffusion of the Reformed Christian faith, limited by the officialdom of the Catholic Church, the Presbyterian missionaries founded the Evangelical Press Newspaper (1864-1892), the first Protestant newspaper in circulation in Brazil. With the first essay located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, under the leadership of Presbyterian pioneer Ashbel Green Simonton, the newspaper extended its reach to the places where Presbyterianism founded its missions. It had as main axis of distribution the province of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Minas Gerais. The writing ranged between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. In order to understand the historical aspects of religious hope in the formation of the Presbyterian Church in Brazil, we will investigate how the Evangelical Press Journal presented the metaphorical concept of the "Kingdom of God" to its readers. For this, we will consider the roles attributed to God and man, the State and the Church, the individual and the family in the process of expansion of the “Kingdom of God” and the progress in the Brazilian Empire and in the following wars: Secession, Paraguay and the Italian Risorgimento.

In this research a totally new Radical and Differentiated Universal-directed approach to theology, pneumatologyand particularly the old classical pentecostalism's narrow particularistically and so called unique elitistic model of Spiritbatism is critically investigated on theological-philosophical levels. Though the moderner neo-pentecostalistic or rather charismatic rendering of classical pentecostalism receives attention to serve as criterion for comparison, the main focus is on classical pentecostalism. Naturally the different models of Spiritbaptism comes pertinently on the table. And in the light of this, our study propose a brand new globalistic model for Spiritbaptism, namely the RDU-Spiritbaptism-mode lwhich signifies a Radical and Differentiated Universal-directed model of Spiritbaptism. This new RDU-Spiritbaptism-model also logically implies a radical revolutionary paradigmshift and tum-about in the old classical Spiritbaptism perspectives. This inevitably also implies a widening of the theological-scientific field and the interrelatedness thereof with all theological and non-theological sciences and professions, with all ecclesiological and non-ecclesiological scopes, with all religious and non-religious circles, as well as all theoretical and praxiological inclinations. Confinement of territory is thus also imperatively essential and indispensable. The centrifical narrowing of the studyscope handles naturally only the essential theological-philosophical and praxiological impacts, not only on the old classical pentecostalism, but also on all theologies and all philosophies and all sciences which are all transformed in a coherent holistically interconnected fashion to one great universal whole / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / D. Th. (Systematic Theology)
