Previous issue date: 2009-02-05 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This dissertation has the purpose of analysing the mythical-symbolic meaning of the Grail in its correlation with the myth of the hero, here represented by the ideal of medieval cavalry. Work with the hyphotesis that between the lines of Grail myth lies virtue as the path which leads to acquaintance of self and transcendence, being the Grail an immaterial good symbolised by many objects. Between two axes, history and myth, I bring some reflections to analyse the meaning of the Grail. Regarding methodological procedures, I made use of bibliographical research based on seminal romances from twelfth and thirteenth centuries, Perceval or the Story of the Grail by Chrétien de Troyes and Parzival by Wolfram Von Eschenbach. Such romances were examined from referential theory of the Antrophological Structures of Imaginary by Gilbert Durand and of comparative mythology by Joseph Campbell.

Previous issue date: 2010 / The present work has as main objective to point the passages of classic content presented in the medieval novel A Demanda do Santo Graal (portuguese edition of The Quest for the Holy Grail), a novel about chivalry of the first half of the thirteenth century, in order to explain the reason why exist these passages in the novel in question. Another objective is to show how the Middle Ages realize a retaking of values of classical Antiquity, especially with regard to the attitude of the medieval knight: this was the greek hero (or roman hero) as the ideal of bravery, virtue and loyalty; the imaginary of medieval cavalier (or "the imaginary created around of the medieval knight") was practically the same imaginary of greek hero (or roman hero), because of the similarity between the historical and literary contexts in which they both arose. The theory that underpins this work is the Teoria da Residualidade, created by Roberto Pontes, critic, essayist and professor of Literature of the Universidade Federal do Ceará – UFC. During the research, the concepts of imaginary and residual, proposed respectively by the École des Annales and Raymond Williams, a marxist literary critic, are also present. With regard to the methodology, it must be said that the research was conducted, at first, through readings of classics of the ancient Literature (Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, Vergil’s Aeneid and Ovid’s Metamorphoses) and portuguese novels about chivalry (Amadis de Gaula and, especially, A Demanda do Santo Graal) and through comparative literature, since there was a work of comparison between these texts. Finally, this research is relevant to the academic community because it mentions, in a medieval and christian novel (A Demanda do Santo Graal), an important aspect of the novels about chivalry: the classic, so much neglected by most scholars which deal with the novels of the breton cycle.

O bifrontismo do feminino em A Demanda do Santo Graal: Redescobrindo o substrato céltico das personagens femininas na busca do Santo Cálix / The dualism of the feminine in the Quest of the Holy GrailFrancisco de Souza Gonçalves 31 March 2011 (has links)
The figure of woman takes leading role in the novels of chivalry Cycle Breton. Emerging as an element that links the narratives of the legendary Arturo, it constitutes a vital and multifaceted adjuvant in the construction of the episodes in an ongoing interaction with the male represented mainly by knights. The Medieval brings up a nuanced picture of the female: the woman socially viewed under various divisions is reflected in the literature of chivalry, as it can be seen in The Quest for the Holy Grail. The female presence is important in the narrative, especially in its tense relationship with the chivalry, now linked to the religious element monasticated, ascetic and celibaterian.
The main objective of our study is to investigate how the sociocultural medieval mold, in which was shaped The Quest for the Holy Grail relates to its substrate, the narratives originated of the worldview inherent in the Celtic imagination, thus our analytical bias uprights in the female element in this work. More specifically, it becomes a scope which the image of characters reflects the ideology of clerical didactic and moralistic of the thirteenth century. However it redeens the image of characters imbued with singular duality; that ambiguity which is not only a mark of the medieval paradoxical concerning the female, but also of literary characters designed between two worlds, two distinct ideological poles. In other words, it is about personas who are "bifront fictional beings". Characters located between the inheritances and identities. The research bases were the episodes in which these polidimensionals ladies appear and become adjuvants in literary action, either to cooperate, confuse or impair the knights who undertake the sacred, ineffable and "fortunate" quest for the Holy Chalice which will end the adventures of the Kingdom of Logres

La Queste Del Saint Graal. Édition critique et commentée du manuscrit BNF, français 339 / La Queste del saint Graal : a critical and annotated edition of the French BnF 339Scubla, Catherine 30 October 2012 (has links)
This Ph.D. thesis aims to make available a previously unpublished version of La Queste del saint Graal, as found in the French BnF 339 manuscript in Paris. We will attempt to demonstrate that this manuscript is one of the best examples of the β family, one of the two families of manuscripts in which the well-known story has survived to this day. However, despite its high quality, this manuscript has so far never been seriously studied. In order for our transcript to be as correct and reliable as possible we selected five control manuscripts demonstrating the advantage of belonging to the other three groups forming the β family. The six collated texts therefore allow the production of a version of La Queste that is very representative of this family. We used the work of previous editors and scholars to correct our transcript and to highlight the common points between the manuscript being studied, the control manuscripts, and those of the α family. Our edition intends to be as thorough as possible. A literary and philological introduction analyses the interest of the established text, its manuscript tradition and dialectal features - mainly Anglo-Norman, northern and northeastern, and justifies the choice of the manuscript under study. The transcript is divided into numbered paragraphs corresponding to the divisions made by the copyist and the corrections and their sources are included in footnotes. The other versions of the control manuscripts, notes, a glossary and an index of the elements of the story can be found after the transcript.

Text and images : the manuscripts of the French prose Merlin and its Vulgate SequelFabry-Tehranchi, Irène 19 November 2011 (has links)
The Vulgate Sequel to the French prose Merlin was composed in the first half of the XIIIth century and is the last piece of the Grail cycle. It creates a wider story encompassing the life of Merlin and the beginnings of King Arthur’s reign and serves as a prequel to the prose Lancelot. The Vulgate Sequel is the most widespread, but the existence of different sequels demonstrates the poetic dynamism and the rivalry produced by the development of Arthurian prose romances and their cyclification. Our study of the manuscript collections including Merlin and its sequels, of their mise en page and illuminations sheds new lights on the production and reception of works which were copied throughout the Middle Ages. Merlin and its Sequel are mostly transmitted in compilations focusing on the history of the Grail: they have a particular relationship to the Joseph of Arimathia, the Estoire del saint Graal and the Prophecies of Merlin. In some manuscripts, Merlin and its Sequel are copied with texts which do not belong to the Arthurian tradition, such as hagiographies or pastoral works, demonstrating their religious and didactic interest. Other compilations stress their historical and chivalric aspect. The Vulgate Sequel and its illumination accentuate the historical aspect of Merlin while giving an epic flavour to the beginnings of King Arthur's reign. This spirit might contradict the perspective of its integration in the romance Vulgate cycle, but it echoes the missionary dimension of the Estoire del saint Graal and resonates with the military conflicts of Lancelot and of the Mort le roi Artu.

Identité, filiation et problèmes de parenté dans les romans du Graal en prose / Identity, filiation and relationships problems in the Grail romance in proseSerp, Claire 25 May 2012 (has links)
The cycle Lancelot-Graal, and the Perlesvaus, written in the first half of the thirteenth century, are built around a horizontal time, organized around the figure of King Arthur, which makes any idea of succession problematic. But at the same time, society has undergone profound changes. Whether it is about the institution of marriage, rules of transmission of the inheritance, or the anchoring of the lineage in very specific geographic locations, relationships between individuals have slowly changed. Authors should therefore ensure the coexistence of disparate elements, even contradictory. Genealogy get in Arthurian romance through the Vulgate Cycle. The vertical time affect the novel, and relationships are crucial in narrative constructions of characters.

This study examines the literary texts of the Ligurian writer Giuseppe Conte published between 1972 and 2005. In Part One, the reasons are considered which justify this research on Giuseppe Conte. This author is discussed in the context of the literary movements of the second half of the 20th century in Italy, with special reference to his approach to literature, which proposes a modern rewriting of myth. Conte is in fact a co-founder of "Mitomodernismo". "Mitomodernismo" is a literary movement, established in 1994 and currently still active, which aims to revive modern society through a spiritual rebirth promoted by a recovery of basic human values, as these appear within the boundaries already suggested by myth since antiquity.
The Mitomodernisti propose an alternative which could assist contemporaries to overcome the obstacles created by modern "maladies", particularly in the West, whether these be socio-cultural, ecological, or religious. Throughout Conte's entire æuvre one clearly perceives this strong desire for rebirth which for the author is concretised in "Fare Anima", that is, a way to reconnecting with the universe, of rising towards the "light".
This tension towards rebirth could be compared metaphorically to the quest for the Graal, which involves suffering as a way to redemption. The artist's visionary work is comparable to the extrasensory journey undertaken by the shaman during his trance. For this reason, in Part One of this study the figure of the shaman will also be examined in a socio-cultural context, in order to transfer it better to the literary context.
The whole of Part Two is dedicated to an analysis of Conte's æuvre - poetry, novels and also, but only indirectly, essays and articles - in the light of his fundamental themes, which metaphorically turn the writer into a "shaman".
The analysis is based on some concepts put forward by the Swiss psycho-analyst Carl Gustav Jung, such as the function and symbolism of myth in literature from a psychoanalytical perspective.
Classics & Mod Euro Lang / D. Lit. et Phil.

A study of Y Seint Greal in relation to La Queste del Saint Graal and PerlesvausLloyd-Morgan, Ceridwen January 1978 (has links)
[Short abstract]. The Middle Welsh prose romance, Y Seint Greal has long been recognised as a translation of two early thirteenth century French Grail romances, La Queste del Saint Graal and Perlesvaus, but so far no comprehensive study has been made of the relationship between them, nor of the Welsh text as a work of literature in its own right. This study first puts Y Seint Greal into its proper context, as a product of the close links between France and Wales in the later Middle Ages, and as part of a surge of translation of foreign material into Welsh that began in the mid thirteenth century. Manuscript and other evidence indicates that Y Seint Greal was commissioned by the uchelwr (nobleman) Hopcyn ap Thomas of Glamorgan, at the end of the fourteenth century, both translator and scribe probably working in Neath or Margam Cistercian Abbey. The translator presents the Queste and Perlesvaus as two parts of a whole, creating a number of problems of consistency within Y Seint Greal. Moreover, comparison of the Welsh text with its French sources shows that the translator was insensitive to some of their qualities, and that his tendency to abridge has sometimes undermined the structure and coherence of the romances. However, many of the translation's apparent weaknesses can be ascribed to the redactor's concern to adapt his French material for the new audience. Overtly foreign elements are removed and efforts made to harmonise events and characters of the French romances with those of native Welsh tradition. The translator was familiar with earlier Welsh prose narrative, which has influenced his style, and he has drawn on the earlier romance of Peredur. Y Seint Greal was not intended to be a faithful translation but a bridge between Welsh and continental Arthurian traditions.

This MA thesis introduces results of a research which is analysing links between the medieval Bible and the Grail novels written during the 13th century. For that purpose, we had recourse to biblical paraphrases and translations in prose written in old French as a secondary corpus.
This dissertation is divided in three chapters. The first chapter introduces the main and secondary corpuses by putting them into context. This chapter also deals with the Bible in the Middle Ages, that is to say with its status and with its diffusion in the society. The following chapter analyses the biblical rewritings found in the corpus by dealing with the questions of allegory and exegesis, mainly in the Legend of the Tree of Life. Finally, the third chapter studies the writing of the dream as a common process of writing found in the Bible and taken back by the Grail novels.
In the end, medieval authors took back not only the tales of the Bible, but also its writing processes. The study of this dynamic of resumption also allows demonstrating how texts incorporate biblical material in the specific development of romance, a literary genre in emergence at that time.

Previous issue date: 2018-03-19 / Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Goiás - FAPEG / I perceive the Judaeo-Christian tradition as more comprehensive than it is treated in the biblical
canon. This work aims to unfold paths undertaken by some Judaeo-Christian myths, that is,
mythical structures, which corroborated the construction of new myths, such as those of Percival’s
sister and Solomon’s wife – characters of A demanda do Santo Graal (1995), Portuguese translation
from the 15th century, copy of a French sample from the 18th century. In this trajectory, it is
essential to consider, besides the biblical scripture, some apocryphal manuscripts which lend
literary elements of feminine prominence and humility to the matter of Britain. This character, for
example, was scarcely referred in the Portuguese Demand; therefore it is essential that La queste
del Saint Graal (1923), present in Vulgata, be consulted for the purpose of studying the narrative
of Solomon’s wife. Thus, according to the Judaeo-Christian tradition one can attest that the
elements borrowed from it, still echo in discourses, which sometimes vilify and sometimes defend
women, making them exemplary and heroic feminine figures, despite carrying the heavy burden of
anti feminine tradition. Such misogynous burden is noticed in the narratives that aim at legitimating
the Grail’s hero lineage, taking the Hebrew kings from the biblical tradition as ancestors. It is from
this androcentric nucleus that heroic feminine narratives will emerge, softening the bitterness
against women, in the moment heroes find themselves in abulia in face of the unknown. For this
purpose, the dissertation carries out an analytical study of the referred literary pieces, following the
methodological procedures of bibliographic, qualitative research, identifying the literary,
sociological, historical and cultural perspectives. It tried to unveil the paths taken by the characters
Percival’s sister and Solomon’s wife, along their mythical trajectory, compatible to the Judaeo-
Christian tradition.
