Geronthology presents itself as an instigative area for these thematics to be more explored. However, the presence of grandfathers in the educational and formative process of the grandchildren is a fact and refers us to a reorganization of the family nucleus. This research is intended to apprehend how the elderly interprets the grandfather-grandchild relationship, the exchange of experiences between generations, and the feelings which become evident on the daily routine. Considering that grandparenthood is a singular and personal phenomenon, by means of interviews this research was intended to gain some comprehension of meanings, values, and expressions. The research revealed that grandparenthood is associated to a strong feeling of parenthood. Grandfathers demonstrate great satisfaction in the relationship with their grandchildren / O envelhecimento masculino e a avosidade são temas pouco estudados.

Prožívání proměny role pečovatele v pěstounské péči / Experiencing the Transformation of the Caregivers' Role in Foster Care

KÁROVÁ, Ilona January 2018 (has links)
The subject of the presented thesis focuses on foster care exercised by children´s relatives. The target is to ascertain possible different roles in kinship foster care and different attitudes to the aforementioned, record the experience of kinship care givers, their viewing and experiencing of childcare. I wanted to know if fostering had brought any positives into their lives and on the other hand if there are any negatives related to such care. The theoretic part of my thesis describes the history of foster care in different periods, explains the terms like family, social role and attachment. Furthermore, particular forms of foster care are explained and foster care exercised by children´s relatives is described in more details. Attention is also paid to the relationship and contact between a child and his/her parents. The Authority for social and legal protection of children (OSPOD in Czech) has an essential role in foster care together with assisting organizations, which are described in the last chapter of the theoretic part. I used qualitative methodology for research purposes and semi-structured interviews for collection of data. The research file contained eight respondents which were selected based on simple purpuseful sampling. The research file consisted of foster parents caring for children of their relatives. I determined reasons why the children had been placed into foster care, how the foster parents experience such care and how they view it themselves. The results of the interview analysis helped me to uncover and understand the basis of kinship foster care. According to similar signs, they were divided into several areas. The first area focused on the reasons why the child had been placed into kinship foster care. The main reasons included various types of addictions, child neglect, failure to provide suitable housing or lack of interest in the child. The second area related to the feelings of foster mothers when accepting the child. Their decision-making process is described here, including their motivation and fears related to fostering. In most cases, foster mothers had enough time for making their decisions on fostering. Half of the foster mothers found it natural; the other half had ambivalent feelings for it. The third area is dedicated to changes in wider personal relationships and relationships in the family, in particular, to the impact of foster care on relations between partners and the potential influence on the relationship of foster parents with their own children. Relations with biologic children of the foster parents had an important role as well. The fourth area includes basic characteristics of childcare. Most foster mothers noticed significant changes in their lives. Foster care had a negative impact on the quality of their lives but it principally became a source of vitality and optimism for them. Foster mothers faced problem situations related to intergenerational differences, behaviour of children and problems at school. They also worried often about the future of their foster children. Some foster mothers accepted the role of a mother that predominated over their other life roles. Others had no problems in separating their roles and shifting from one role to another. Most conflicts in the role appeared when the child was fostered by his/her grandmother. The last area contains conditions that have helped foster mothers to reduce the burden of foster care. Foster mothers appreciated help of their families, which they preferred, and sufficient financial security. They gladly accepted the help of assisting organizations and the services offered by them. Mandatory education and the possibility to share their experience with other foster parents were of great importance too.

Tatiana Lima Brasil 10 April 2015 (has links)
The grandparents who take the creation of grandchildren are an increasingly common phenomenon in today's families. Antecedents of the Psychological Adjustment of Children and Grandparent Caregivers in Grandparent-Headed Families

Jooste, Jane Louise 12 1900 (has links)
Grandparent-headed families are diverse in nature and represent a rapidly growing family type. While challenges facing grandparent caregivers are well documented, less is known about the well-being of their grandchildren, with many early studies relying on small samples of convenience. This study used an existing large national database, the National Survey of America's Families (NSAF), to compare differences in well-being of both children and grandparent caregivers across the independent variables of family type, ethnicity, gender, and age. Findings suggested better mental health and less parental aggravation for caregivers in traditional two parent intact families as compared to grandparents co-parenting in a multi-generation home, skipped generation grandparents (raising their grandchild with no parent present) or single parents. Skipped generation grandparents in particular reported most caregiver aggravation. Child physical health was reported to be worse by skipped generation grandparent caregivers. Behavior problems were reported to be worse for children in grandparent headed households than those in traditional families, particularly for teenagers raised in skipped generation households by their grandmothers. Specific results, limitations and future directions for research on grandparent-headed households were discussed.

It is known that grandparents have already raised their grandchildren, without proven legal dependence, for many years, however, recently, there has been an increase in demand for grandparents in accessing Judiciary to regularize this situation, in reason of the need of a legal guardian, for various purposes. Therefore, the present work was carried out to investigate, from the perspective of the grandmothers, the place occupied by them, within the family context, after deferring judicial custody of their grandchildren. Specifically, it was intended to analyze the factors that propelled grandmothers to take care of their grandchildren, as well as to characterize their feelings and needs, from the transfer of the duties of the biological countries to the grandparents, in addition to a framework as a family structure after obtaining custody, identifying the gains and difficulties arising from this situation, and also describe the changes that a legal custody had in the lives of the grandparents, with this new legal situation. It is a research of qualitative nature in which 5 grandmothers take full-time care of grandchildren, aged between 42-64 years, of low socio-economic levels, residing in the metropolitan area of Recife and who have the legal document of guard of their grandchildren. The research was approved by the Judge of the First Court of Childhood and Youth of Recife. Initially, an analysis was made of the documents referring to the records of the selected families' cases, from the years 2013 to 2015, in order to analyze the initial petitions and technical opinions built by the professionals who work in the First Ward of Children and Youth of the region of Recife, in the Nucleus NIAP (Integrated Nucleus of Psychosocial Counseling). In a second moment, a Field Survey was carried out, where a socio-demographic questionnaire was used and an interview conducted semi-directed from a previously defined script, being analyzed according to the Thematic Content Analysis Technique. The data obtained in the present study show that as grandparents they came to replace deceased, chemical dependent or negligent parents. The grandchildren were raised mainly by the grandparents because, in most cases, they were already responsible for the children from birth. The reason that made the grandparents look for the Judiciary was the absence of the parents, however, what prompted the grandparents to activate the Justice System was the fear that their grandchildren were withdrawn from their lives, since there was no legal evidence of their care. It was also evident, in spite of the satisfaction in the coexistence with the grandchildren, there is an affective ambivalence when they are occupying the parental place, ceasing to be "simply grandmothers". They assume a very high responsibility burden, mainly because this charge is legitimized by a Power that goes beyond the family sphere. It is hoped to be able to contribute to broaden the understanding and visibility of this familiar configuration, as well as to provide subsidies for the work of professionals who deal with family members.

The thesis is structured in three interdependent studies. The first study, already published, corresponds to a systematic review of literature on grandparents raising grandchildren within a period of ten years (2004/2014). The results showed that, although the number of studies on the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren has increased in recent decades, researches regarding guardian grandparents are recent and still scarce, especially when investigating the relationship of grandparents with other development contexts, such as the school of their grandchildren. In order to accomplish the ensuing empirical studies, Ecological Insertion was used as the methodological strategy. Participants were selected intentionally, over an approach to a primary school of the state public school network in the city of Recife/Pernambuco. Diversified instruments were used over a period of eight months, total time of insertion of the researcher in the field. The first five months corresponded to the period of attachment of the researcher to the context, in which naturalistic observations were initiated. In the last three months sociodemographic questionnaires were applied and semi-structured interviews were conducted with the participants. The second study analyzes the relationship between guardian grandparents and their grandchildren from a bioecological perspective. Six guardian grandparents and eight grandchildren who answered sociodemographic questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were included in the study. From the Thematic Content Analysis, the following themes were discussed: grandparents’ parenting; joint activities that involve grandparents and grandchildren. The results showed that grandparents’ parenting is a relational process that is developed over time and involves individual and contextual dimensions. On the other hand, the analysis of joint activities revealed that guardian grandparents and grandchildren are primary dyads that influence and learn from each other in sports, leisure and cultural activities, corroborating with studies that affirm that such activities favor the creation and maintenance of the bond between grandparents and grandchildren. The importance of the intergenerational approach was discussed through intergenerational programs aimed at favoring coeducational processes that benefit grandparents and grandchildren. The third study analyzes the family and school mesosystem from the perspective of guardian grandparents, grandchildren and teachers. Six grandparents, eight grandchildren and eight teachers participated in this study. Semi-guided interviews (with a script for each group), field diary and sociodemographic questionnaire were used as instruments. In the analysis of the results, the sociodemographic data and the records of the observations were articulated to the contents brought by the participants in the interviews. All interviews were transcribed in full and analyzed according to the steps in Thematic Content Analysis. The following themes were discussed: the relationship between guardian grandparents and school; the ease and difficulties in that relationship; the information and communication between the family and the school contexts; and the joint activities involving family and school. In all these dimensions the obstacles and the possibilities for the expansion of the potential for development of the family and school mesosystem were analyzed. It was evidenced that important aspects to expand the potential for development of the family and school contexts were put into action with the presence of guardian grandparents in the school context by establishing a direct communication with the teachers, expecting the collaboration of the school in the development of their grandchildren, and suggesting actions and interventions. These results confirmed the growing importance of grandparents for family, school, and society as they play the role of guardians of their grandchildren.

The psychosocial impact on rural grandmothers caring for their grandchildren orphaned by HIV/AIDS

Mudavanhu, Doreen 31 October 2008 (has links)
This exploratory study investigated the psychosocial impact on rural grandmothers of Gutu, Zimbabwe, caring for their grandchildren orphaned by HIV/AIDS. The participants included 12 paternal and maternal grandmother-caregivers from four districts of Gutu, whose ages ranged from 56 to 76 years with orphans in their care ranging from infants to 18 years. The present study made use of Erikson's psychosocial theory of development on late adulthood. Data were gathered using semi-structured open-ended interviews in the participants' homes. Interpretive analysis was used to analyse the audio-taped data. Findings reveal that most grandmothers are experiencing a personal toll in dealing with the late adult crisis of integrity versus despair, including finding it difficult to resolve the grief of losing children while engaging in full time grandparenting in a stigmatising society. Participants reported a need for support and interventions tailored to their unique needs. Counselling, social support, financial assistance, and skills and knowledge about HIV/AIDS are therefore recommended. / Psychology / M.Sc. (Psychology)
