[en] THE ORIGINS OF PHOTOJOURNALISM IN BRAZIL: PHOTOGRAPHY IN THE RIO DE JANEIRO PRESS, 1839-1900 / [pt] PRIMÓRDIOS DA FOTORREPORTAGEM NO BRASIL: A FOTOGRAFIA NA IMPRENSA DO RIO DE JANEIRO, 1839-1900

JOAQUIM MARCAL FERREIRA DE ANDRADE 06 October 2003 (has links)
[en] The dissertation is based on exploratory research, covering the period during which the photographic image starts to be incorporated by the illustrated periodical press in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Thus the universe of the present research includes all periodical publications locally printed between 1839 (the year of the announcement of the invention of the daguerreotype - the first photographic process to be patented and commercially explored in the world) and 1900, which marks the end of an outstanding century under several aspects, when the country starts its second decade under the new republican regime, going through severe political, economical, social and cultural changes which, naturally, were reflected in the press.By the turn of the century, the fact that photomechanical processes were both technically and commercially well developed and also the fact that photographic technology had been quite perfected, would give raise to a change in attitude on what concerns the uses of photography in early XXth century s Rio de Janeiro illustrated periodical press. Photography finally moved away from caricature and reached a gradual autonomy as a means of communication and expression. One thousand, one hundred and twenty six collections of periodicals published in the city of Rio de Janeiro (which belong to the microfilm collections of the National Library) were examined. The work aimed at detecting the first uses of photography, putting them into minimum context - including the technologies employed. It also distinguishes two relevant marks in the process of photography s incorporation by the local illustrated press - the first in A Semana Ilustrada (1860-1876) and the second in O Besouro (1877-1878).

O design de Fred Jordan / The design of Fred Jordan

Helena Rugai Bastos 08 May 2012 (has links)
No standard academic program or established approach for learning and practicing graphic design existed in Brazil during the first two decades of his career, and this analysis points out the distinct stages of Jordan\'s work between1940 and 1990. In the process, this research endeavors to describe the different phases of the designer\'s creative output against the historical background. lt demonstrates the significance of Jordan\'s work and how his projects allow us to understand the transformation of the graphic design discipline and industry, from his use of technology, techniques and themes, meeting the needs of the industrial revolution and the diversified consuming public. Focusing upon the Sao Paulo environment where he worked, the paper examines his influence on the field of visual arts, taking into account the profile of the professional design groups in Brazil at that time. Within this broader picture, it is possible to confirm the factors that influenced him, his circle of friends, his dialogue with intellectuals, artists and professionals in the visual arts and design community, as well as his areas of interest and study. To achieve this goal, the approach taken here was a recreation of the artist\'s life journey through extensive bibliographic research and a survey and organization of the Jordan family\'s collection of his work. Some of the sources, primarily the texts that discuss his work, bring to light Jordan\'s participation and influence on the Brazilian and international cultural scene. The study helps the reader understand several aspects of Jordan\'s work: his view of the meaning of art and the artist; the connection he made between contemporary design and themes employed by German authors and artists in the first half of the 19th Century;and his experiments based upon Goethe\'s Theory of Colours and the naturalistic thought of that German writer. Finally, it also presents a catalogue of Fred Jordan\'s designs and ofthe documentation related to his work.

Carlos Oswald: a gravura como obra de arte na primeira metade do século XX no Rio de Janeiro / Carlos Oswald: ecting as art in the first half of the XX century in Rio de Janeiro

Paulino, Helenira 14 December 2017 (has links)
This dissertation studies the etchings of Carlos Oswald (1882-1971) in light of his own concepts disclosed in many of his texts, in particular in the autobiography entitled Como me tornei pintor, published in 1957, and in articles published in the magazine Vozes de Petrópolis. The innovativeness of the artist, who established the teaching of metal etching as art in Rio de Janeiro, is evident. With the goal of demonstrating how Oswald\'s concept of metal etching as art distanced it self from Brazil\'s first decades of the XX century firmly established conception of engraving as an art applied to the industry, an analysis of documents and texts about the Academia Imperial de Belas Artes and the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios was performed. Oswald establishes in the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios the teaching of etching as Art, being responsible for the formation of many Brazilian etchers. Here it is also demonstrated that the etchings of Carlos Oswald, during the first two decades of the 1900s, were not evaluated by most art critics for not being considered art. The analysis of the artist etching presented here is based on this above-mentioned conception, as well as in Oswald\'s own propositions expressed in his texts. The research is centered in etchings belonging to the collections of the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes/Ibram/MinC and the Fundação Biblioteca Nacional - Brasil.

INFLOW : Structured Print Job Delivery / INFLOW : strukturerade jobbleverans

Buckwalter, Claes January 2003 (has links)
<p>More and more print jobs are delivered from customer to printer digitally over the Internet. Although Internet-based job delivery can be highly efficient, companies in the graphic arts and printing industry often suffer unnecessary costs related to this type of inflow of print jobs to their production workflows. One of the reasons for this is the lack of a well-defined infrastructure for delivering print jobs digitally over the Internet. </p><p>This thesis presents INFLOW - a prototype for a print job delivery system for the graphic arts and printing industry. INFLOW is a web-based job delivery system that is hosted on an Internet-connected server by the organization receiving the print jobs. Focus has been on creating a system that is easy to use, highly customizable, secure, and easy to integrate with existing and future systems from third-party vendors. INFLOW has been implemented using open standards, such as XML and JDF (Job Definition Format). </p><p>The requirements for ease-of-use, high customizability and security are met by choosing a web-based architecture. The client side is implemented using standard web technologies such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript while the serverside is based on J2EE, Java Servlets and Java Server Pages (JSP). Using a web browser as a job delivery client provides a highly customizable user interface and built in support for encrypted file transfers using HTTPS (HTTP over SSL). </p><p>Process automation and easy integration with other print production systems is facilitated with CIP4’s JDF (Job Definition Format). INFLOW also supports"hot folder workflows"for integration with older preflight software and other hot folder-based software common in prepress workflows.</p>

Shared sensory experience : a design strategy for dissemination : a thesis presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Design at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand

Bourke, Kate January 2010 (has links)
This study explores the theory of emotional contagion and then offers insights as to how communication designers could practically apply aspects of this theory to a communication campaign. Schoenewolf (1990) describes emotional contagion as “a process in which a person or group influences the emotions or behavior of another person or group through the conscious or unconscious induction of emotion states and behavioral attitudes” (p. 50). A significant aspect of this theory involves joint consumption. This suggests that an experience of an event differs when more than one person is involved. Ramanathan and McGill’s (2007) recent study suggests that a stronger positive or negative evaluation of a shared experience is achieved through the creation of emotional contagion. When considering this, an opportunity exists to establish recommendations for the design industry to employ in order to enhance an audience’s response. In order to be successful in constructing a pertinent strategy it is critical to consider the way in which people perceive experiences; central to this theme are the five senses. Research into the five senses which include sight, sound, smell, touch and taste, indicates the significant impact over an individuals’ emotions and decision making process. To date the human senses have been largely neglected within the design industry due to conventional use of mainstream media. Through using non-traditional media, participants could be connected on a more sensory level through means of interactive involvement. From a holistic perspective the overarching methodology will be that of research for design (Frayling, 1993, as cited in Downtown, 2003). The emphasis will therefore be on providing insights and ideas as to how the design industry could, through non-traditional media, embrace emotional contagion. Supporting methods will be a combination of the following: 1. Case studies. These will include an analysis of precedents 2. A self generated design campaign. The focus will be tourism. This has been chosen because of its experiential and shared nature.

Oliveira, Cauhana Tafarelo de 18 February 2014 (has links)
The research sought to investigate the Tropicalismo (1967-1968) and analyse how its graphic language reflected in the album covers from 1969 to 1978, in other words, in the ten years following the official end of the movement. The dissertation attempted to think about the esthetic and cultural characteristics present in graphic projects, considering the historical context of those years, the proposals of the Tropicália’s songs and the influences between sounds and visualities of period. Thus, the research was studied the album covers of Brazil in the second half of the 1960s, with an emphasis on Tropicália. Ten album covers of the period subsequent were selected, to compare and discuss the main references. It was developed a visual analysis based on Peircean semiotic - from the proposed of Martine Joly (2006) - of album covers of different phonograph axes from 1969 to 1978, pointing how was constructed a dialogue between Tropicalismo’s design and the selected pieces. From this, it was possible to verify that the Tropicalismo had significant importance for the creation and implementation of a new visual language in Brazilian design and influenced, in different aspects, the development of album covers in the next decade.

Využití propagační grafiky v praxi / THE USE OF PROMOTIONAL GRAPHICS IN PRACTICE

CHARVÁTOVÁ, Jana January 2010 (has links)
The master thesis consists of two parts. In the theoretical part, applied and computer graphics, fonts, and promotion are discussed. The practical part is aimed at applied graphics based on the graphic art extended by mixed media. Matrices made of zinc-galvanized sheets were etched in nitric acid. A set of graphic works was printed on watercolour papers. Individual graphics were placed at a promotional brochure of the company Printing House David. The brochure promotes the printing house equipment. When prepared the brochure, the software CorelDraw was used. Photos taken on the Printing House David and edited with the use of Adobe Photoshop software package are thematically focused on "printing machines" of the company. The photos are attached to the thesis in a form of sketches.
