Sacred bodies, profaned bodies : psychology, politics, and sex in the literatures of Sri Lankan ethnic conflict / Psychology, politics, and sex in the literatures of Sri Lankan ethnic conflict

Han, Hyojin 18 December 2012 (has links)
This project examines the literal and literary bodies associated with the Sinhalese-Tamil conflict in Sri Lanka as they are represented in literary, journalistic, and anthropological accounts. These texts are populated by historical personages and fictional characters spun from imagination or based on actual people who serve as representatives of those who live in the day to day reality of violence. The goal of this project is to offer a re-visioning of the power relations between the aggressor and victim, the victor and vanquished, in violent conflicts. Island of Blood: Frontier Reports from Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Other South Asian Flashpoints, a memoir by Anita Pratap, and The Terrorist, a feature film by Santosh Sivan, illustrate how Velupillai Prabhakaran, the leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, fashioned his own absent or invisible body and the bodies of the suicide bombers as the focal point of Tamil nationalism. Prabhakaran developed the cult of personality around himself by fostering an aura of mystery and employing religious symbolism. In particular, feeding emerges as the quintessentially nurturing function misappropriated by this malignant maternal figure Prabhakaran. The other category of bodies is comprised of the victims: the dead, the raped, and the other defiled bodies that are anomalous in military conflicts. These are the profaned and violated bodies. In Michael Ondaatje’s Anil’s Ghost, the unidentified bodies of human rights violations provide forensic evidence for legal proceedings and in turn attain sanctified status as the survivors use their remains to build legal cases against the atrocity. Their mute presence serves as a powerful amplifier for the survivors. A. Sivanandan’s When Memory Dies has as its focal point an ethnically incited rape and murder. During intergroup conflicts rape is often used to weaken the enemy group’s integrity. However, I argue that When Memory Dies challenges this norm and suggests that those who are considered threats to group integrity, whether they be minorities, outcasts, unwed mothers or raped women, could paradoxically be the agents of social integration, especially in the time of unrest. / text

A Comparative Philosophical-Psychoanalytic Study of Buddhism in China and Japan

Tung, Anthony 01 January 2018 (has links)
It becomes evident that psychoanalysis of a large group is meaningful and necessary when persistent conflicts cannot be resolved, and the Volkan Tree Model opens the door for meaningful dialogue if both parties are engaged. This report studies two major religions and their varieties as these are manifested in two Asian countries helps us to understand the specific cultures of China and Japan, and also shows the limits of their compatibilities with Western Philosophy. In this examination, the philosophical-psychological analysis of two major groups is central to the argument and its conclusions.

Living Life on Planet Jedward: The Genius of John and Edward Grimes : On Jedward. And Fandom.

Tipping-Ball, Bethany-Alicia January 2014 (has links)
John and Edward Grimes (artist name "Jedward") have been active for four and a half years and have a heterogeneous following of fans. This thesis aims to investigate how and why people become Jedward fans, how they view the fandom and what experiences they have of being round the twins. After respondents, independently of one another, began disclosing how the twins and fandom had fundamentally changed their lives, this area of investigation was also pursued. The conclusion is that while there are some negative aspects of fandom, for those taking part in the study, being a fan of Jedward has led to what I've chosen to term "Fandom-Induced Self-Efficacy".

No. of bitstreams: 1 Rodrigo Alencar.pdf: 621157 bytes, checksum: 04e117e9039b4d779c9bccb26f634402 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-03-28 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / Drugs, albeit under other symbolic coordinates, have always been in the most varied places, societies and human groups. However, since the turn of the 19th century, drug use and trade has been object of international treaties. These agreements urge the signatory countries to take measures to control and combat drugs, through the mobilization of the military in their drug policies. As a result of this strategy, the fields of health and public safety intertwine, causing some blurring between who should be treated and who should be fought. Therefore, this work is dedicated to the task of identifying the unconscious operations at stake in the game of prohibition. We establish as object delimitation the highlight given to crack in the drug policies, since it is the most recent episode about the topic in Brazil. Based on this understanding of the theme, we draw on both the contribution of the psychoanalytical theory and its interpretations of group interaction, as well as the political resources that act to camouflage the subject s division. Thus our analysis concludes that the policies to combat crack deny the discontent in the cultural life, insofar as they present this substance as a threat to the social bond / As drogas, ainda que sob outras coordenadas simbólicas, ocuparam diversos lugares nas mais variadas sociedades e agrupamentos humanos.

Här knackar vi inte längre : En kvalitativ studie om skolpersonalens upplevelse av sin arbetsmiljö på Kronan skola / We don’t knock here anymore : A qualitative study of the school personel’s experiences of their work environment at Kronan school

Algsten, Linda, Agardius, Isabella January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine how school personnel have reacted in regard to their mental, physical, and social working environments one year after the Kronan School attack in Trollhättan. The study's results are based on semi-structured interviews with five staff members. The qualitative method of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (I.P.A) has been used to analyse the material. The results show which factors the staff members have considered to be the reasons for their recovery and setbacks when returning to work after the event. Five comprehensive themes presented themselves as being the most prominent after analysis. The comprehensive themes are based on the interviewees' experiences of social support, security, the lost meeting place, social strains, and mental processing. The results present how important the component's safety, security, and social support has been for the interviewees' processing of the traumatic event, as well as their return to work. The conclusion emphasises the interviewees' experience in a workgroup, where solidarity has developed and strengthened after experiencing crisis.

Alltid redo : En fenomenologisk studie om undersköterskors arbetsliv / On duty : Assistant nurses’ working life: a phenomenological study

Antonsson, Maria, Häggblad, Gisela January 2018 (has links)
Healthcare organizations face great demands as the proportion of the elderly is increasing. Assistant nurses account for the majority of practical patient care and as a result, they are experiencing negative working conditions. As a consequence, the Western region in Sweden especially, is dealing with high levels of sick-leaves. The aim of the present study was therefore to gain a deeper understanding of assistant nurses’ experiences of working conditions. Qualitative phenomenological method together with semi-structured interviews was adopted. Ten assistant nurses in one municipality participated. The interviews were transcribed and coded based on qualitative thematic analysis. Three themes and eight thematic categories emerged: Working tasks (practical working tasks, social working tasks, invisible tasks), Organization (formal organization, informal organization, re-organisation), and Well-being (increasing well-being, decreasing wellbeing). The social psychological theories underlying the theoretical part of the analysis were Social Exchange Theory and Group Psychology. The result showed that experiences of working conditions to a large extent were connected to social relations, both within the working group and between healthcare providers and care-recipients. Working tasks were less prominent as far as the creation of meaning about what affects well-being within the profession.

Storytelling effects : on individual´s perceived sense of belonging and affinity sense of belonging

Ahlander, Emma, Olsson, Magnus, Davidsson, Matilda January 2020 (has links)
Using the communication tool storytelling, in group processes is very popular. Storytelling can be used to motivate group members to collaborate and pursue common goals. Humans have many different needs, but one of the biggest and most important, besides food and water, is the need to belong. The need to belong can be met by being involved in different group constellations. A well-tested model in group psychology is the FIRO model, which suggests that all groups go through different stages in their work towards pursuing their common goal. How well the group manages to create the unity that the individuals in the group strive for depends on how well the group works in the respective stages. The purpose of this essay is to investigate whether individuals feel that they have a stronger sense of belonging and faster achieve an affinity sense of belonging to their assigned group, if storytelling is used as a communication tool. A quantitative research method has been implemented by collecting databased on an experimental study. Ninety questionnaires were collected and analyzed, where the participants were divided into two different experimental groups. Based on a scenario they were then asked to answer the questionnaire where half of the surveys contained a scenario with storytelling, and the other half contained a scenario without storytelling. From the essays result, it was found that storytelling contributes to individuals feeling a stronger sense of belonging to their assigned group. Storytelling does however not contribute to individuals faster achieving an affinity sense of belonging to their fellow group members. The essays results aim to be applied to different types of working groups. By a working group, we refer to different types of groups within different subjects such as professional groups, study groups and training groups etcetera. In this essay, these groups will be referred to as assigned groups. This is done to minimize the risk that the reader will confine themselves to focusing solely on working groups within organizations. The following essay is written in Swedish.

Alla ensembler är en grupp människor : Musiklärares syn på arbetet med gruppdynamik i elevensembler / All Music Ensembles Consists of Groups of People : Music teachers’ view of working with group dynamics in student ensembles

Casimir Lindholm, Agnes January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to explore, describe and analyze the views of music teachers and their work with group dynamics in student ensembles in various musical genres. The applied method in this study is qualitative interviews according to phenomenological methodology and analysis. The theoretical perspectives are taken from Lewin, Forsyth and Blumer, and are used to define the perspectives of the informants regarding ensembles and how they affect each other regarding group dynamics. The result appertains to how the informants define the groups they are leading, and thus what they consider creates a group. It is also about the energy contained in a group, how the informants are capturing the group at a particular moment and why they believe this is important and how the make-up of a group affects the group dynamics and the learning situation. The summary of the analysis by Lewin's formula states that the energy of the groups have a prominent role for the informants, such as how some/someone’s energy affects another/another’s energy. The emotional state of teachers and students make an impact in different ways and are also affected in various ways, and that it is impossible to predict how a group lesson will be. The analysis by Lewin's formula related to the result also indicates that the ensemble depends on the composition of students. Which students who came that day, and in which mental state they are. The teacher's duty is to handle the situation at hand, and be prepared for the unexpected.

United in defeat : the causes and consequences of identity fusion in football fans

Newson, Martha January 2017 (has links)
What motivates extreme pro-group action, such as heroism and self-sacrifice on the battlefield? Despite much scholarly attention in recent years, the question is yet to be fully explained. Recent research suggests that shared dysphoric experiences are one way of generating identity fusion, a visceral sense of 'oneness' between individual and group that has been shown to motivate willingness to fight and die for the group. Using two special populations - British and Brazilian football fans - this thesis investigates the causes and consequences of fusion. Football fan cultures are diverse, globally popular, and ripe for examining intergroup conflict. This thesis focuses on two related components of the 'shared dysphoria pathway' to fusion: emotional arousal (e.g. watching one's team suffer a particularly bitter defeat) and the sense of 'self-transformativeness' that ensues from intense, shared experiences. Across four studies, it is shown that for some individuals, sharing the agony of defeat can be emotionally and physiologically arousing to such a degree so as to transform their sense of personal identity. In turn, this leads to a more porous boundary between group and individual identities, i.e. individuals become 'fused' with their groups. Fused people are documented as engaging in some of the most extreme and potentially dangerous social behaviours we know. Two related consequences of fusion are examined: extreme pro-group action and outgroup hostility. Football hooliganism is a persistent, global problem, which is addressed in a fifth study. This thesis refutes past work suggesting that hooligans are social misfits, instead contending that hooligans are especially fused to their group and motivated to defend their 'brothers-in-arms', which results in outgroup violence. These findings suggest that a more thorough understanding of the causes and consequences of fusion could conceivably impact a great many areas, perhaps most importantly conflict resolution and policies relating to intergroup conflict.
