Arqueologia e Turismo: sustentabilidade e inclusão social / Archaeology and Tourism: Sustainability and Social Inclusion

Louise Prado Alfonso 28 September 2012 (has links)
Essas discussões permeiam três estudos de caso em que o Turismo inserido em projetos de Arqueologia foi propulsor de reflexões sobre os bens patrimoniais, dando ensejo a possibilidades de sustentabilidade e inclusão social para as comunidades envolvidas / The present work aims to ponder on the importance of an interdisciplinary approach in Archaeology, in particular on the role of Tourism as an useful e interesting discipline to stimulate reflections about projects with the aim of a decolonizing Archaeology which is aware of its social role. From international examples that provide elements to instigate a debate over how Archaeological Tourism has been understood in other realities, here is presented a brief analysis of archaeological attractions developed for the national archaeological Conventional Tourism in Brazil. These discussions permeate three case studies in which Tourism, inserted in archaeological projects spurred reflections about patrimonial property, creating opportunities of sustainability e social inclusion for the communities involved

The Southward spread of Johannesburg and its impact on precolonial stone walled structures

Naidu, Saireeni Latisha January 2018 (has links)
Thesis (M.Sc.)--University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Science, School of Geography, Archaeology and Environmental Studies, 2018. / There are thousands of Stone Walled Structures (SWS) located in the southern half of the Gauteng Province. In the absence of relevant historical documents, these SWS are all the information we have about how pre-colonial societies were organized in this area. Unfortunately, they are threatened by rapid urbanization and development. This research attempts to estimate how many Iron Age SWS have been lost to urban development in Johannesburg South during the last 80 years. I mapped and quantified the SWS and urbanization in four chronological snapshots using remote sensing techniques. Aerial photographs from 1937 and 1961 were used as well as Google Earth satellite images from 2005 and 2015. The data was analyzed on the ESRI software ArcGIS 10.3. The four snapshots show the trend in urban sprawl and destruction of SWS and this information is valuable for mitigation strategies. Fortunately, there are legislations and procedures in place to ensure that not all these sites are lost forever. / EM2018

This railway was created by farmers from the state of S?o Paulo, between the 19th and the 20th centuries, and intertwined Funil region (Cosm?polis) to Campinas? urban center, prolonged up to Conchal afterwards. The railway catalyzed the territorial formation at a sector of the Metropolitan Region of Campinas. However, terminated in the 1960?s, became almost invisible inside the landscape. The research retraced the Funilense?s route, analyzed how the material remains from its past activities are articulated on the present territory, and how that could affect their preservation as a historical landmark. The analysis of the railroad was based on the assumptions of Present Time History, which assumes that memory, identity, and history are collective constructions built on everyday praxis. An analysis with the territorial approach enabled the comprehension of the railway as a historical vector of urbanization processes, landscape production, and possibly as a process for heritage appraisal.

En undersökning av Uppsala studentnationers kulturarvshantering / “We’re not a Museum!” A Research of the Cultural Heritage Management at the Student Nations of Uppsala University

Bergkvist, Moa, Lönner, Pernilla January 2011 (has links)
The thesis investigates how Uppsala University student nations steward their cultural heritage. The survey targets how student nations manage their cultural heritage, what financial priority they give it, their attitude towards it, and their awareness of it.A qualitative study of semi-structured interviews with representatives from 11 out of 13 student nations in Uppsala was implemented. The theoretical framework is based on the theory of David Lowenthal on the importance of cultural heritage, Susan Pearce’s theory on collecting, and Pierre Bourdieu’s theory on cultural capital. To investigate the importance of cultural objects theories by Ivo Maroević, Annette Weiner, and Igor Kopytoff was applied. The survey shows that stewardship of cultural heritage at Uppsala student nations is poor and in need of reform. The survey also shows that the status of the nations’ antiquarians and other responsible officers is low and that antiquarians feel neglected in the priorities of the nation's financial plans. The thesis suggests collaboration between the student nations and Uppsala University as a solution to these problems. This two years master’s thesis could serve as a point of departure for such an initiative.

The Politics of Development toward the preservation of the heritage in Brazil is a recent fact, especially the ones that deal with urban historical place, where beyond the management of the cities, it has the challenge to adapt these forms to the new functions, without compromising the place's memory. Recently, the cities have been granted with a new sense of space, where the "use value" was replaced by the "exchange value". The purpose of this research is to analyze the practical use of the urban heritage preservation in Ouro Preto focusing on the heritage management, in other words, the actions of the State that reflect direct or indirect over the protection and the rules of the heritage and its possible uses while basic structure of the cities territories. Thus, analyzing the production process of the urban space in Ouro Preto, we attempt to emphasize how its heritage emerge into the development context of the patrimomial Brazilian politics, the "form-content" of the city, today recognized as UNESCO's World Heritage. Aksoum (Ethiopia) : an inquiry into the state of documentation and preservation of the archaeological and heritage sites and monuments / Aksoum (Éthiopie) : enquête documentaire et de préservation des sites et monuments archéologiques et patrimoniaux

Woldeyohannes, Hiluf Berhe 07 December 2015 (has links)
Aksum is the capital of ancient Aksumite Kingdom and one of the most important archaeological site in Ethiopia. It has been registered on World Heritage List in 1980. Its archaeological and cultural heritage continues to be a victim of urbanization, development, erosion and deposition. Despite increased awareness and issues within the field of archaeology, the destruction of archaeological and cultural heritage sites of Aksum has been staggering. Although considered as an outstanding universal heritage site, very little focused cultural heritage management has been undertaken in Aksum. All archaeological excavations conducted thus far in Aksum focused on unearthing elite tombs and palaces. Both acts of destruction are relevant to current research on the cultural heritage management aspect in Aksum in general. This research provides an analysis of the destruction of the archaeological and heritage sites and monuments in Aksum based on ancient documents, archaeological excavations and field observation. It examines the extent the sites have been excavated, documented and preserved. Three sites have been selected for case study for the present research. The research revealed that the archaeological and heritage sites in Aksum have been deeply affected by urbanization in general. Evidently, the absence of integrated development planning by the municipality, lack of professionals in the field of archaeology and lack of public education have contributed significantly to the loss of the archaeological record. This thesis attempts to evaluate the current state of documentation and preservation of the cultural heritage resource in Aksum.
