Composer avec le passé : Historiographie monastique, conscience identitaire et réseaux en Aquitaine, des temps carolingiens au XIIe siècle / Dealing With The Past : Monastic Historiography, Identity Consciousness and Networks in Aquitaine, from The Carolingian Times to the Twelfth Century

Bellarbre, Julien 04 June 2015 (has links)
The Aquitaine of the Early Middle Ages has long suffered from a bad historiographical reputation. However, numerous recent works have pointed out the existence of a strong sense of identity in the territories situated south of the Loire, without trying to explore the paradox implied by those conflicting viewpoints. Analyzing this paradox and trying to solve it is one of the main goals of this research. Taking as our initial geographical reference the ancient Carolingian kingdom of Aquitaine, this work will occasionally narrow this area of study according to criteria related to the history of mentalities. We assume that Aquitaine is where one felt one was an Aquitanian during the Early Middle Ages. The period studied (eighth – twelfth centuries) spans the field from the beginning of Carolingian times to the end of the relative autonomy of Aquitaine from the Capetian then the Plantagenet rulers. In those times, monks were the main writers of history, and our investigation will be restricted to their historical works. Our dissertation mainly deals with monastic Chronicles, Annals and Histories written within the Carolingian kingdom of Aquitaine and the duchy that succeeded it. The purpose of this research is to determine how the information travelled between the monasteries, and to find out the sources and methods used by monastic historians in order to report ancient facts as well as more recent ones. “Dealing with the past” is nonetheless proper to the historian ; this is why a more accurate attention will be paid to works that fall outside the scope of “immediate history” and are mainly concerned with the “quest for origins”. This study is divided into three chronological parts : the times of the Carolingian kingdom of Aquitaine, during which historiographical activity was very much focused around the monastery of Aniane, centre of the reform ; the times of the rise and then of the development of a new “independent” Aquitaine, until the death of Duke William V, called “the Great” († 1030), when the reviving historiographical centres were located further north (Angoulême, Limoges) ; and finally the zenith of the principality (up to Eleanor of Aquitaine’s first wedding in 1137) whose greatest historiographical achievement, the Chronicle of Saint-Maixent, was born in a monastery situated only thirty miles away from the ducal capital of Poitiers.

Lino, Raphael Cesar. January 2017 (has links)
In this movement, one of the appropriations that caught the attention of the academic community was the microhistory. This historiographical practice descends from the paths involved between the Italian historians, participating in the journal Quaderni Storici who established dialogues between social history and anthropology in the 1970s and 1980s. In parallel, it can also be noticed in the development of Brazilian social history itself, especially in the studies on the Colonial Period that opened for new theoretical contributions. With these questions in mind, this dissertation seeks to investigate the appropriations of microhistory in Brazilian historiography in the 1980s and 1990s, through three distinct moments, to construct a theoretical framework of it, to traverse the trajectory of Brazilian historiography in the 1980s, and finally, to analyze two works that can be classified in this theoretical perspective, Um herege vai ao paraíso - cosmologia de um ex-colono condenado pela Inquisição (1680-1744) and Dom Obá II d'África, o príncipe do povo - vida, tempo e pensamento de um homem livre de cor, defended in the early ... Svenska läroböckers skildringav Sverige i samtidshistorien : Med andra världskriget och kalla kriget som utgångs-punkt / Swedish textbooks’ depiction of Sweden in the present history : With the second World War and the Cold War as outset

Olsson, Simon January 2018 (has links)
This bachelor thesis researches the differences and similarities of how Sweden is depicted in World War Two and the Cold War in Swedish history textbooks with students between age 15 and 19 as intended readers. The thesis uses a historiographical toolset described by Michael Stanford. Three textbooks from the 1960’s, one from the 2000’s, and two from the 2010’s have been analysed. My conclusions are: The textbooks have one voice and one perspective through the whole narrative thus the history in the textbooks is unchallenged, albeit the newer textbooks include discussion and text analysis for the students. The early textbooks do not criticise Swe-den during World War Two whereas the newer ones tend to have a critical outlook with one exception. The focus on Sweden in internationally affairs during the Cold War has decreased in the newer textbooks. Sweden is generally described as a peaceful neutral country with little to no international influence during both wars. The perspective on Sweden’s neutral policies are generally depicted as something positive. Two of the newer ones apply more criticism against Sweden’s politics, however. Because of the textbooks monotone retelling, teachers need to not treat the textbooks as an authority in the classroom, but as one way to tell history.

Reframing the Problem of Difference: Lillian Smith and Hierarchical Politics of Difference

January 2012 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT For many years, difference scholars, such as Cornel West, Iris Marion Young, and Janet Atwill have been reminding humanities scholars that if social equity is ever to be realized, difference needs to be reconfigured and reframed. As Janet Atwill puts it, "difference can no longer be the anomaly, the enemy, or the problem to be solved. Difference is the condition" (212). While these scholars insightfully recognize that difference needs to be accepted, welcomed and loved rather than merely tolerated, they have not sufficiently addressed the perceptual change that must occur worldwide if difference as an intrinsic underlying condition of human existence is to be embraced. This project provides a point of departure for carrying out such a dramatic epistemic change by arguing that hierarchical thinking, not difference, is the real agent underwriting societal violence and discord. Hierarchical thinking delineates a more appropriate critical space than does difference for social justice inquiry, invention, and intervention. This project also rhetorically theorizes the realm of intersubjectivity and provides two novel contributions to contemporary rhetorical theory: 1) privilege as a rhetorical construct and 2) the untapped inventional potential of the postmodern understanding of intersubjectivity. To illustrate the embodied and performative aspects of hierarchical thinking, this work draws upon the writings of Lillian Smith, a white southerner (1897-1966) whose descriptive analyses of the Jim Crow South allude to large systems of privilege of which Jim Crow is merely representational. Illustrating the invidious nexus of privilege, Smith's writings describe the ways in which individuals embody and perform practices of exclusion and hate to perpetuate larger systems of privilege. Smith shows how privilege operates much as gender and power--fluidly and variously and dependent upon context. Viewing privilege as a rhetorical construct, operating dynamically, always in flux and at play, provides rhetoricians with a theoretically important move that un-yokes privilege from specific identities (e.g., white privilege). When viewed through this more dynamic and precise lens, we can readily perceive how privilege functions as a colonizing, ubiquitously learned, and variegated rhetorical practice of subordination and domination that, as a frame of analysis, offers a more fluid and accurate perspective than identity categories provide for discussions of oppression, social justice, and democratic engagement. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. English 2012

História local, memória e ofício do historiador entre Raízes e marcas do tempo (1990-2012)

Donner, Sandra Cristina January 2015 (has links)
This thesis’ goal is study the production of local History by amateur historians and professional historians. A face historiadora de J. de Figueiredo Filho e a construção do Cariri cearense

Alves, Hildebrando Maciel January 2017 (has links)
The research subject of this thesis is the construction of the past of the Cariri region of Ceará from J. Figueiredo Filho’s historiographical production (1904-1973). Born in Crato, in the state of Ceará, son of a pharmacist well known in the city, Figueiredo Filho followed his father’s career, fostering the desire of seeing improvements in his land. Imbued by the desire of giving his fatherland its righteous place before the narratives produced about the national past, he joined other intellectuals from the region and founded the Instituto Cultural do Cariri (ICC). Aiming to achieve the uncompromising defence of the southern region of Ceará, these subjects performed several actions to honour the regional past: solemnities, the elaboration of civic calendars, a Heroes Pantheon, and the foundation of a museum. Partnering with several intellectual bodies, like the Academia Cearense de Letras (ACL), the Instituto do Ceará (IC), and the Associação Nacional dos Professores Universitários de História (Anpuh), Figueiredo Filho has built up his image as an intellectual committed with the regional cause and legitimising his own works on the Cariri region. From novel to folklore, to autobiography, to economic studies and his own writing of history, his project revolved around the space in which he was born and lived for the most part of his life. In this sense, this work aims to comprehend how Figueiredo Filho’s historiography built a past for Cariri. The historical sources used were the periodical Itaytera and the publications of the following institutions: ACL, IC and Anpuh, and the main focus of analysis was the history writings produced by Figueiredo Filho, that is to say, História do Cariri (4 volumes) and Cidade do Crato.
