Uma penca de canalhas: Figueiredo Pimentel e o naturalismo no Brasil / A bunch of scoundrels: Figueiredo Pimentel and naturalism in Brasil

Renata Ferreira Vieira 26 March 2015 (has links)
Noting that the theme of naturalism in Brazil is still mis understood by historiography, this research aims to write the history of Figueiredo Pimentel as writer and author of naturalistic novels, focusing on the study of his novels O aborto, published by the Livraria do Povo in 1893, and Um canalha, published by Laemmert & Comp. in 1895, both in Rio de Janeiro. To fulfill the objective of the work, the research has raised new data about Figueiredo Pimentel and his relationship with the naturalistic esthetic, especially in the 1890s, in the collection of the Brazilian Digital Newspaper Library. Through consultations of primary sources it was possible to know the history of a forgotten Brazilian naturalist writer and the first receptions of O aborto and Um canalha by writers, critics, booksellers, publishers and the general reader.

Nelson Werneck Sodré e a crise da Revolução Brasileira / Nelson Werneck Sodré and the crisis of Brazilian Revolution

Alex Conceição Vasconcelos da Silva 05 April 2013 (has links)
This dissertation in Political History of the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), inserted in the line of research Politics and Culture is a study on the Brazilian history taking as a central theoretical contribution to the Brazilian Army and military historian Nelson Werneck Sodré, regarding modernity (or rather, development) in Brazil. His work is noted for the need to change the political, social and economic conditions of the country, built along its historical formation, marked by the alignment of the ruling classes with the hegemonic center, his intense relationship with foreign markets and their mutualistic with international capital. Wrote extensive works theoretically grounded in Marxism-Leninism, the desire to overcome the traditional forces, which in their view impeded the advancement of the country in the constitution of a nation, making a policy of industrialization independent, as opposed to progressive sectors of Brazilian society. Through the dialectic, the clash between opposites, in this case, the "new" and "old", in which the first was the "Brazilian Revolution" and its antithesis, the second, the forces of tradition: landlordism and imperialism. In our research we also focus the Brazilian crisis of the Revolution, with the establishment of the dictatorship after the 1964 coup, which culminated in the defeat of a national project of an entire generation. Finally observe the intense political debate that the historiographical work of Werneck Sodré was submitted, in addition to its positioning.

A historiografia literária brasileira: uma análise comparativa das obras de Ferdinand Wolf, Silvio Romero e José Veríssimo / The brazilian literary historiography: a comparative analysis of the works of Ferdinand Wolf, Silvio Romero e José Verissimo

This study makes a comparative analysis of some of the major works of literary history of Brazil, published in the nineteenth and early twentieth century, written by Ferdinand Wolf, Silvio Romero and Jose Verissimo. It analyzes the concepts of nationalism, history and literature, relating them to ideas that circulated at the time they were written Le Brésil Littéraire, by Ferdinand Wolf, the History of Brazilian Literature, by Romero, and work namesake, by José Verissimo. Thus, besides analyzing the works together, it recovers the historical significance of these works, since the inserts in the frame of reference current at the time of appearance of the books that comprise the corpus. Assuming that the main characteristic of these texts is the idea of nationalism, it studies the meaning ascribed to this term since the mid-nineteenth through the early twentieth century, when these books were writte. Moreover, the narratives are related to different ways of thinking history, as a discipline, in that period, trying to identify them by how they build the historical explanation. Finally, the ideas we have about the literature are not only articulated the concepts of nationalism and history of those texts convey, but also the thought that it was undertaken

Canopy of everlasting joy : an early source in Tibetan historiography and the history of West Tibet

Pritzker, David Thomas January 2017 (has links)
A more descriptive title for the dissertation might be "Early historiography in Purang-Guge and its relationship between orality, kingship, and Tibetan identity: a close study of a recently uncovered 12th century historical manuscript from Tholing monastery in West Tibet." The present study is therefore a close textual analysis of all the outer and inner features of the Tholing Manuscript. When reading the text, there is the gradual realization that the archaic peculiarities in script, binding, spelling, vocabulary, prose, and narrative twists, all highlight the work as a wholly rare and different version from those early histories typically found in Central Tibet. The key difference lies primarily in the focal point of the narrative. Whereas most similar narratives from the time of the phyi dar (11th-13th centuries) onwards place at the core of their structure the history of Buddhism in Tibet, the Tholing text puts as its central focus kingship and the history of kings in Tibet. For this reason, while Buddhism plays an essential and integral part of the story as a whole, the text can be viewed as a more secular work then any comparable monastic history of the period. The narrative structure of the manuscript, with its heavy use of rhythmical prose, similes, archaic topoi and motifs, is hauntingly familiar to those parallel passages found among Old Tibetan Documents and is emblematic of the liminal period in which the text was written. At this time, histories were transitioning from disperse and possibly oral transmissions to predominantly formal organized written traditions. The poetic nature of the text, together with its unusual physical features, raises questions relating to its purpose and function, with the possibility of its use as a ritual manuscript for royal legitimization. Through a close study of the text, I offer some insights on the formative nature of early Tibetan historiography in establishing the sacred and political power of the kings of West Tibet.

Fernand Braudel argues about the historical research which gives priority to long term. Even the founders of the Journal of Annales already thought history from long periods of time, contrasting to the political history of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, while Fernand Braudel has said that the political history is not only factual, or ordered to do so. To understand how Fernand Braudel reaches this position, we must reflect on the influences that led him to this, among them, and mainly from the tradition of the Annales. Therefore, we’ll examine the comments about the historical time in Marc Bloch and Lucien Febvre and how these considerations relate to the new grade of time proposed by Fernand Braudel. We’ll review the historical time in its dimensions of temporality and duration, the dialectic of duration and how Fernand Braudel works with the concept of structure. The study of the methodological perspectives from Annales group, which is our project, is a prerequisite to understanding the methods of contemporary historiography, in particular those linked to the New History. Due to the systematization of the new proposal about time for historical research conducted by the Fernand Braudel and, especially, the merit of articulating the environment, culture and society on works marked by the dialectics of the time, we have to take his work as a basis for the current research.

No plano analítico, empregou a “fórmula” from the origins to the present, denotando certo sentido “pragmático” e “presentista”. / Environmental history is new in Brazil and diversifies. In this field, it is still missing detailed research that brings particular attention to the specific, to the contributions of each author to the establishment of the field. In this work, we emphasized Warren Dean’s life journey (1932- 1994) and mainly his work on environmental history, performing a critical examination of bibliographic material and diverse oral sources. By incorporating environmental variables in his studies, seeking to understand the historical relations between Brazilian society and the environment, this American Brazilianist produced innovative work on rubber production in the Amazon and on deforestation of the Atlantic Forest, both subjects much mentioned but little studied. Offered an interpretation of the past, reflecting problems brought by it, based on themes as economic development and environmental degradation. At the analytical level, he used the formula from the origins to the present, showing a pragmatic and present sense. The objective rigor opens to an intention, a desire of changing reality. Environmental history assumes a utility trace, serving to mitigate the impact on society in the future. In terms of scale, international character provided by ecological issues forced a modification on the focal analysis of Warren Dean, from the regional / national to the international / global field. The defense of a global ecological ethic is implicit in this alteration, indicating to an international cooperation in the context of the Cold War and to nationalist tendencies. In the methodological framework, Warren Dean’s environmental history was characterized primarily by the broad dialogue with the natural sciences, agricultural and geography, and by the field work, based on observations and interviews. The author left an innovative work, lesson of research and engagement... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Markets, institutions and the Polanyian challenge : a theoretical study of the new institutionalist economic history of Douglass C. North

Krul, Matthijs January 2016 (has links)
In this study, I examine the New Institutionalist Economic History (NIEH) of Douglass C. North from a historiographical and philosophical perspective. As a point of departure for this purpose I take North’s critical engagement with the primitivism-modernism debate in premodern economic history, as represented in his early work by the ‘challenge of Karl Polanyi’. This challenge, I argue, has given shape to the development of the NIEH in its various stages of theoretical elaboration. Therefore, understanding its contextual significance is indispensable for making sense of North’s oeuvre as a whole. On my reading, North interpreted the challenge of Polanyi to mean combining two methodological conceptions previously not united in one work. On the one hand, North’s NIEH extends the scope of economic theory to the study of the longue durée of economic history; while on the other hand North seeks to theorize the importance of historical variation in sociocultural institutions for understanding why there are rarely complete or well-functioning markets in most of economic history. North considers neoclassical economics suitable for neither of these purposes. Yet his critique of Polanyi’s substantivist-primitivist approach is primarily based on the absence of an integration of his project with the tools of economic theory. For this purpose, North therefore adopted the theory of transaction cost economics, also called New Institutional Economics (NIE), to this new ambitious end. More than perhaps any other author North has been responsible for extending the scope and sophistication of this economics based approach in the study of economic history. In the present work, I discuss to what extent this approach has been successful in its own aims, internally consistent, and to what extent it is plausible as a historiographical approach from an ‘external’ point of view. I do this by combining a close reading and interpretation of a variety of North’s writings, focusing in particular on the most contemporary version of his work - which has not been much studied - with a methodological and theoretical discussion of various major themes in or aspects of his work from the viewpoints of historiography, anthropology, and philosophy of social science. These themes include (among others) North’s understanding of the functioning of markets in politics and economics, his approach to choice theory, rationality, and game theory, his use or neglect of evolutionary concepts, the meaning of embeddedness in his work, and North’s contractarian anthropology. As this work shows, North’s NIEH is situated in a difficult intermediate position within larger debates in economic thought: between primitivism and modernism, between substantivism and formalism (in the anthropological sense), and most significantly, between the ‘new mainstream’ of economic theory and the quest for successive endogenisation of the institutional context of economic behavior. This certainly speaks for the ambition and sophistication of North’s historiographical approach, something which has only increased with the further development of his theory. But in his quest to unite the best insights of choice theory with New Institutionalist economics as well as incorporating the ‘anthropological’ level of fully socialized beliefs, preferences, and how they give rise to institutional variation in history, North frequently seeks to have his cake and eat it. The persistent methodological ambiguities in his work give rise to problems of internal consistency and external plausibility, which are present from the very inauguration of his NIEH research programme. The subsequent development of his work has not, I argue, been able to overcome this fundamental problem. For this reason, while much of North’s toolset and his overarching ambitions are valuable developments in economic historical theory, he does not achieve his aim of overcoming the challenge of Karl Polanyi. Without a more decisive break with his original economic microfoundations, North’s NIEH project cannot ultimately live up to its grand ambitions.

Essas obras reúnem a descrição dialetal minuciosa do português do eixo Lisboa-Coimbra do século XIX. / This thesis is a historiographical study about Aniceto dos Reis Gonçalves Viana (1840- 1914). The main objective of this study is to analyze the phonetician’s linguistic ideas through biographical and bibliographical (biobibliographical) research with the author’s phonetic and phonological works, in particular with reference to: Essai de phonétique et de phonologie de la langue portugaise d'après le dialecte actuel de Lisbonne (1883) and Exposição da Pronúncia Normal Portuguesa para uso de Nacionais e Estrangeiros (1892). These works bring together the detailed description of the Portuguese dialect of the Lisbon-Coimbra axis at the end of the nineteenth century. These dialectal studies of A. R. Gonçalves Viana were based on using the methods of the incipient European nineteenth century Phonetics. In this thesis, historical aspects about the social situation of that century and the author’s life were well investigated in Portugal. These historical and geographical considerations aimed to contribute to the understanding of the linguistic thinking of A. R. Gonçalves Viana. I have translated Essai de phonétique et de phonologie... (1883) into Portuguese and I have inserted unpublished letters of the author in the biographical part of the text. The thesis is a descriptive-interpretative research, circumscribed in the area of the Historiography of Linguistics (Koerner 2014, 1995; Swiggers, 1997). It aimed to contribute to the history of Phonetics, Phonology and Historiography of the Portuguese language studies. The motivation of this study was due to the observation of a small amount of academic studies on A. R. Negro e amargo : vestígios da história no "romance do café" /

Ivano, Rogério, 1971- January 2005 (has links)
Abstract: The research aims to develope an historiographical read of the "coffee romance", literary pieces signaled with the social process ruled by the coffee. From different ways, authors described habits, values, conflicts, experiencies that hold not only local society, but the great and medium urban centers too. Following this trajectory, the romance not just take the coffee culture as motif or historical and social scenary of its plot, forming representations of the country and the city, of an economic circle or just insisting in the narrative tradition of brasilian literature; the very romance, as an aesthetic and critical experience, allowed the creation of visions, hipothesis and historical concepts that had as main intrerpretative tool the idea of ruin, it means, the sense of opulence and decadence. Due this dramatic perspective of the romance that history escapes from its ruined fate to confront the readers of another time; its historicity do not wear off when the literary piece or the coffee circle ends. It is done of interpretative reports that admits the lecture of the "coffee romance" as a modern allegory. / Doutor

Rudi, Thiago Augusto Modesto. January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation starts from the following question: what was writing History like in midnineteenth century? In order to add some meaning to it, the writings of the French historian Joseph-Ernest Renan (1823-1892), between the years 1848 and 1863 were considered as its specific object. Through the reading of Renan's books and articles and the records of the institutions of which the author had been a member, the study aimed to understand the procedures and conceptions that guided his writing of history. This study provided the understanding that, at first, Renan characterized the history as the great mission and work of his century. This mission that defined history as a religion and as a science, simultaneously endeavored to situate the history in a prime location for the significance of science and religions. In dialogue with historians such as Augustin Thierry and Wilhelm von Humboldt and authorized by places such as the Société Asiatique and the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, Renan became one of the missionaries who, for love of truth, interwove the thorough critique of the documents to the intents of Philosophy of History in a self-reflective, verisimilar writing, endower of senses and movements to the past / Mestre
