"Tools to Live": Using Community-Engaged Scholarship to Assess the Role of a Canadian Non-Profit Organization in Serving Persons with Mental Health Issues and Concurrent Disorders

MacInnis, Ashley 05 September 2012 (has links)
Ample empirical evidence highlights the significant prevalence of persons with mental health issues and concurrent disorders involved in the criminal justice system. This population frequently uses services provided by community based non-profit organizations for aid and support. Yet, there is a dearth of research that addresses the prevalence of mental health issues and concurrent disorders amongst those served by such organizations, and the barriers to community reintegration that they face. Focusing on the prevalence of mental health issues and concurrent disorders among individuals involved or at risk of involvement in the criminal justice system, the John Howard Society of Waterloo-Wellington and the University of Guelph embarked upon a mixed-methods community-engaged research partnership. Information for the clients in the ‘Community Aftercare’ program was collected in relation to mental health issues and concurrent disorders. Our data reveal the ‘typical’ profile of the clients accessing the Aftercare program, which includes a high prevalence of mental health issues and concurrent disorders. Further, interviews identified stigma, history of victimization, complex needs, criminal history, diminished welfare state, and a lack of social support/social capital as barriers faced by the Aftercare clients. The Aftercare program, however, acts as a form of social support and builds social capital for the clients. A lack of adequate funding to address the complex needs of the Aftercare clients was identified as a program limitation, and the findings revealed a need for additional funding.

Dilemata sociálních pracovníků pracujících v zařízení pro seniory / Social workers and their dilemmas in the organizations for seniors

JELÍNKOVÁ, Veronika January 2011 (has links)
The thesis deals with the dilemmas of social workers who are working with seniors. In the theoretical part there are defined terms such as ?a senior? and ?senior age?, ?the basic physical and psychological changes that accompany this period?. There is also characterized the challenge of working with this group. Due to issues connected with work with elderly, the emergence of dilemmas can be assumed. These are characterized by Mr. L. Musil. In defining the underlying criteria for decisions, there are furthemore described ethical guidelines and their use in determining social workers? decision making. The practical part includes a research probe, which is conceived as a pilot research. Probe research examines whether social workers are faced with dilemmas and what particular dilemmas they are faced with. This part summarizes the results and presents possibilities of changes and adjustments of the research.

The proliferation of mosquitoes vectors of (re)emerging pathologies on the Mediterranean coastline and in the French Departments of America : environmental and health issues

Mieulet, Elise 03 December 2015 (has links)
In France, the human-mosquito relationship and the mosquito control policies show differentiated stories and features from one territory to another. Thus,if in FDA mosquitoes never ceased being epidemic factors, however,on the Mediterranean coast until recently they no longer represented a Health risk.Indeed,in the FDA,since their implementation, mosquito control campaigns have always been conducted for a sanitary purpose through vector control campaigns.Meanwhile,in metropolitan France, aiming to reduce the nuisance, these policies were initially implemented to ensure the inhabitants comfort. But,starting from 2004,following the durable installation of the Asian tiger mosquito on the French Mediterranean coastline and the progressive widening of its distribution area, the context evolves and, from now on,the metropolitan France is potentially exposed to health risks hitherto circumscribed to tropical areas.Mobilising the theoretical frameworks of environmental, health and risks sociologies, and based on a corpus gathering qualitative (311 interviews and direct observations) and quantitative data (1415 questionnaires),this PhD analyses the recombining of the relationship between environmental and health challenges in light of the vector mosquitoes proliferation. It initially focuses on the place and status of the insect within the different populations. Then, the socio-economic factors influencing the individual vulnerability of exposure to the insect are studied. The third part is devoted to the expectations and requests of the inhabitants regarding the public management of the mosquitoes’ proliferation. Finally, a diachronic analysis centered on the Alps-Maritimes region is developed.

Den ensamma staden : En studie på hur Covid – 19 har påverkat urban ensamhet / The Lonely City : A Study on how Covid – 19 has affected Urban Loneliness

Wright, Camilla January 2022 (has links)
Loneliness has been an increasing issue during later years in Stockholm. Whether it is because of technology, solo living or career priorities is hard to know, probably all of them. Loneliness can lead to serious health issues, both mental and physical such as depression and increased risk of heart diseases and strokes. Loneliness is therefore a public health problem that needs to be dealt with. The built environment is also something that affects people's feeling of loneliness, this is the kind of loneliness which is felt in public spaces. This is called urban loneliness and is the kind of loneliness which is examined in this project. During the Covid-19 pandemic the Public Health Agency recommended social distancing which created more people feeling lonely. While meeting others one was preferably supposed to be outside in public spaces. This is why the project examines how Covid-19 has affected the importance of public spaces. The research question used is the following.  What characteristics (design and structure) should a public space have to be attractive and counteract Urban loneliness? To answer the question three areas in Stockholm have been used as case studies; Vällingby Centrum, Liljeholmstorget and Sickla Stråket. To gather information relevant literature and documents has been read as well as surveys and direct observations in the three areas. The project showed that elements in public spaces do affect the feeling of loneliness. It is however difficult to know exactly which ones are the most important since it is individual. Public spaces have somehow been important for people during the pandemic. However due to the timing and the short time period of this project it is difficult to understand how much and for whom, in order to find this out, further investigations would be needed.

The circularity of trauma-addiction-trauma

Smith, Soraya 02 1900 (has links)
Text in English / The rationale for the study was to investigate the symbiotic connection of trauma and addiction. The focus is on childhood trauma and the turn to addictive practices to quell the memories and experiences endured as children. Chapter One discusses the methodology regarding the approach of the study and includes an introductory literature review of the phenomena. Additional literature is included in the ensuing chapters. A personal account of the motivation behind the research is chronicled in Chapter Two. In this chapter, I share with the readers my personal experiences around trauma and addiction in my family of origin. The notion of the blending of trauma and addiction is the focus of Chapter Three. It includes the approach to treatment of trauma and addiction as well as addiction counsellor training in the South African context. The storied lives of the participants and their experiences of trauma and addiction are encapsulated in Chapter Four. Finally, Chapter Five rounds off the study with the analyses of the narratives of the unique individuals who contributed to this research undertaking. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Factors contributing to high adolescent pregnancy rate in Kinondoni municipality, Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania

Philemon, Margareth Nkuba 30 November 2007 (has links)
This study seeks to describe the factors contributing to high adolescent pregnancy rate in Kinondoni Municipality, Dar-es-Salaam. Through the study we get to know the social economic characteristics of adolescents, the adolescents' general knowledge of reproductive health issues and the source of this knowledge. The major discoveries made from this study are that the educational status and knowledge of reproductive health of these adolescents is low, some are already dropouts from school, and others were deprived of the chance to continue with secondary education. They have nothing tangible to do because of their low education and coupled with their low economic status, they are at risk of being involved in sexual activities at an early age, ending in pregnancies. In addition, their parents' educational and economic status was also found to be low. It is important then, parents, teachers and the community in general to arrest the rate of adolescent pregnancies. / HEALTH STUDIES / MA (HEALTH STUDIES)
