Cape-Helena: An exploration of nostalgia and identity through the Cape Town - St. Helena migration nexus

Samuels, Damian January 2018 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA (History) / In the following two chapters I will attempt to offer a more systemic account of St. Helena immigration to South African between 1838 and 1948. To date, no such study has been undertaken, despite a vibrant oral tradition amongst the descendants of St. Helena immigrants celebrating their St. Helenian heritage and often, in peculiar fashion, romanticise their Island of provenance. The commencement date for my chosen timeframe emerges from a need to authenticate rather tenuous historical accounts of St. Helena’s first mass emigration for the Cape of Good Hope in 1838. Where cases of migration are discussed, these are either incidences of large-scale 41, often aided, migration and settlement, or of those St. Helena migrant workers initially employed under temporary contacts to work in South Africa, specifically within burgeoning industrial sectors of the late-nineteenth or early-twentieth century South Africa.

Cape-Helena: An exploration of nostalgia and identity through the Cape Town - St. Helena migration nexus

Samuels, Damian January 2018 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / For an Island measuring merely 128 square kilometers, and in spite of its remote location in the mid-South Atlantic, St. Helena “punches way above its weight in history”, earning and occupying a privileged place in British scholarship of its imperial thalassocratic age. However, prior to this period in which the Island was indispensible to British Empire formation, it had passed through the hands of at least two former European naval nations before it was eventually laid claim to and effectively colonised by the British. The Portuguese, who were the first to stumble upon the uninhabited Island in 1502 - naming it St. Helena in honour of Roman Emperor Constantine the Great’s mother - managed to keep its existence a closely guarded secret for over eight years. For nearly a century, the Island was reserved for exclusive use by the Portuguese as a port for recuperation, replenishing and re-provisioning, which they usually visited on their homebound journey from trading (and conquering) in the East Indies. This Portuguese monopoly of use of the Island, however, ended during the last decade of the sixteenth century when other maritime nations, particularly Dutch and later English traders, became aware of and started frequenting the Island. The initial overlap period, constituting the first three decades of the seventeenth century when mostly the Dutch and Portuguese shared use of the Island, was cause for occasional hostile encounters between the two nations. Apparently, continued Dutch and English harassment of Portuguese (and Spanish) ships made visiting the Island untenable for the Portuguese who opted to avoid St. Helena and instead make use of a number of their other port ‘possessions’ along the West African coastline to replenish and repair their ships.

An Overview of Almeida Prado's "Transtonal" System in his Cartas Celestes, First Six Volumes, for Piano Solo

Peixoto Ferraz, Maria Helena January 2009 (has links)
This study attempts to demonstrate the singular synthesis of influences and compositional techniques represented by the work Cartas Celestes (Celestial Maps) for piano by José Antonio Rezende de Almeida Prado (born in Santos, São Paulo, Brazil, on February 8, 1943). Although Almeida Prado, clearly one of the more influential Brazilian composers, wrote a vast repertoire for all genres, his piano works are fundamental throughout his compositional career. This significant body of work allows one to track his evolution as a composer and to define the changing characteristics of his style within the different phases of his trajectory. This study will examine Cartas Celestes Volumes IVI, Almeida Prado's most important work for piano solo, with particular attention to Volume I. This document will also discuss "Transtonalism," the "System of Organized Resonances," and the Twenty-Four chords, all created by him. The examination of Cartas Celestes Volume I will focus on Almeida Prado's innovative compositional devices and techniques. In addition, this study will investigate the most important aspects of Almeida Prado's music, including timbre exploration and the use of the piano with emphasis on touch, attacks, pedaling, pianistic gestures, and technique.

Lazzaretti, Fátima Toniolo January 2004 (has links)
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro Tecnológico. Programa de Pós-Graduação em Engenharia de Produção. / Made available in DSpace on 2012-10-21T16:42:14Z (GMT). The fishing in the region of Lake Itaipu has been one of the greatest worries of the bi-national Itaipu and other organizations involved in due the fish shortage in the lake, caused by the increasing of professional fishermen and by the increasing of predatory fishing promoting the fish shortage lately, complicating the professional fishermen's life who depends on fishing to survive. In spite of being conscious, some fishermen, even knowing the implications and prohibition that the law imposes during the fish reproductive period, practice clandestine fishing. Thus, the incentive to maintainable development per the utilization of tourism in partnership with professional fishing in the fish reproduction period is suggested, making the fishing activity auto sufficient, incorporating new possibilities to fish species maintenance and promoting the betterment of fisherman's life quality. In order to reach this goal, it is necessary to redeem the importance of nature preservation in order to get the ecological balance between human beings, animals, plants and the environment where they live, in order to ensure the future generations survival, that is, to promote maintainable development. This model of maintainable management proposal for fishing arose from observation and accompaniment the fishing situation and verification the need of action by the professional fishermen on the local tourism.

The Bambuí Group comprises a sequence of neoproterozoic carbonatic and terrigenous rocks outcropping in a vast area of central Brazil, constituting part of the Brasilia Fold Belt and extending over the São Francisco Craton. Numerous researchers have studied various aspects of this unit, however, without delving into the composition of siliciclastic rocks, relevant to the paleoenvironmental and post-depositional interpretation. Aiming to contribute to the construction of knowledge about depositional and diagenetic history and subsequent tectonic influences over the sedimentary sequences of Bambuí Group, this work aims to present the mineral, crystallographic, chemical and petrographic characteristics to infer the depositional context and diagenetic conditions of siliciclastic rocks of Serra de Santa Helena Formation (Bambuí Group) along a W-E transect. This section extends from Padre Bernardo (Goiás state, meridian 48 ° 30), near the inner zone of the Brasilia Fold Belt (Faixa de Dobramentos Brasília - FDB) to the Serra de São Domingos (meridian 46 ° 50) in the state of Minas Gerais, limit between the outer zone of the FDB and the cratonic domain. Using data from geochemistry and petrography analysis was possible to infer the tectonic-depositional setting and the litotypes present in the source area as, respectively, recycled orogen and sequences formed by mafic-intermediate rocks with contribution of sedimentary-metasedimentary origin. The decomposition of the X-ray diffraction patterns, associated with the analysis of the width at half maximum, indicated diagenetic conditions for rocks of the Bambuí Group. The diagenetic stage reached by the Serra de Santa Helena Formation is higher the closer to the center of the orogen, showing the influence of tectonic stress on illite crystallinity. It is also possible that there is contribution from nappes of the Canastra Group. Exceptions are fault zones, where the heat generated by the movement can increase the clay mineral crystallinity.

This research, linked to on line literature and history, aims to highlight the presence of Christian moral values present in the work Helena by Machado de Assis. Through the Theory of Residuality, we intend to demonstrate the cultural, ideological and hysterical received by our people, especially when it concerns me to Roman Catholic beliefs. However, we intend to prove these manifestations are remnants of the medieval mindset of the thirteenth century. Submitted by waste, that mentality led to a hybrid imagery that colonized the moral thinking of our country. It is also our intention to prove that the novel Helena highlights the virtues of the characters of the plot, as a way of perpetuating these moral values. Finally, emphasizing the behavior of the protagonist Helen, as an example of dignity unblemished.

I, Blavatsky: A One-Act Opera

Cooper, Steve, 1951 Dec. 4- 05 1900 (has links)
I, Blavatsky is a one-act opera based on the life of Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, a nineteenth-century Russian princess and co-founder of a religious organization called the Theosophical Society. The libretto, by the composer, involves a cast of three principal soloists and minor roles for six more singers who are also participants in a small chorus. The text format features free verse alternating with regular, rhymed strophes. Accompaniment is provided by a piano. Melodic structure combines some nineteenth-century Romantic idioms with twentieth-century style. Most of the melodic and harmonic material was intuitively composed to express the text. Rhythmic and stylistic contrasts are accomplished in the representation of the extensive travels of the main character. Stage directions involve a stylized set, several scenes requiring minimal set changes, magical effects to represent that facet of Blavatsky's life, and onstage costume changes for several characters. Approximate duration is one hour.
