GIS and archaeology : investigating source data and site patterning

Kritzer, Matthew Carroll January 1995 (has links)
Using a Geographic Information System (GIS), locational analysis was performed for prehistoric sites recorded during a 1985 surface survey conducted in Henry County, Indiana. Two sensitivity models were developed to identify areas more likely to contain substantial archaeological resources. Both models were based on environmental data derived largely from soil survey information. An intuitive model was created and "blindly" applied to the study area. This model did not interpret the distribution of sites very well. During development of an alternative model, the 1985 survey data was more thoroughly investigated. Site locations were found to be correlated with Soil Conservation Service drainage categories. In upland areas, sites with ten or more artifacts clustered around pockets of very poorly drained Millgrove loam soils. In lowland areas, sites with ten or more artifacts exhibited a preference for well drained soils. Before and during analysis, the integrity of source data was investigated. A United States Geological Survey 7.5-minute digital elevation model was found to be unsuitable for analysis within the study area. Mapping errors were discovered within the 1985 survey data. Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, which can increase the spatial integrity of survey data, was demonstrated and used to register and adjust source data. A mapping-grade GPS base station was established at Ball State University. / Department of Anthropology

DNA fingerprinting of Native American skeletal remains

Kennedy, Bobbie-Jo January 1995 (has links)
The purpose of this project was to determine if the human skeletal remains of two distinct Native American cemeteries, found in close geographic proximity, represent the same population. These archaeological sites are similar in location and artifacts. Burial practices, however, vary between the sites. These differences may represent class distinction or a difference in the times the cemeteries were used. Radiocarbon techniques have given dates of AD 230±300 and AD 635±105 for these two sites. Several methods of DNA isolation were compared for their ability to yield PCR amplifiable DNA. DNA isolation using a combination of CTAB and phenol/chloroform/isoamyl alcohol (24:24:1) provided the best results and yielded amplifiable DNA form two individuals, Hn I (8F-410) and Hn 10 ( 27F-8-14 b). Purification of the DNA by extraction from low melting agarose gel was required prior to PCR, and PCR conditions were optimized to maximize the DNA yields. Regions of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genome of isolated DNA were amplified by PCR using primers which are specific for the HincII region of the mtDNA genome. Inability of restriction enzyme HincII to digest the amplified DNA of these two individuals suggested that they belong to the Native American mtDNA lineage C characterized by the loss of this restriction site. / Department of Anthropology

« Esprit de Maupassant » : Henry James and the French realist movement, a re-evaluation / .

Boyington, Mary 18 December 2017 (has links)
In 1888, Henry James wrote in his notebooks, "Oh spirit of Maupassant, come to my aid!" This invocation of the French writer whom he met in Paris in 1875-76 marked a major change in James' work and introduced an evolution in his production of short fiction during the 1890s. The purpose of this study is to present the connections between these two authors by analyzing James's critical essays on French realism as well as his short fiction inspired by Maupassant's work. This critical study consists of five chapters as well as an introduction which points to a "blind spot" in the critical field of Henry James studies in relation to Maupassant. The first chapter analyzes Henry James as a literary critic in his essays on French realism published from 1865 to 1878. Chapter two relates the year spent in Paris during James's youth among the literary giants of Flaubert's circle. The third chapter demonstrates the evolution of James' critical thinking by analyzing his essays on Guy de Maupassant (1888, 1899) and a presentation of his philosophy on his own literary production of short fiction. Chapter four explores the critical reception and translation these authors' works of fiction in country the language of the other. The fifth and final chapter presents a textual analysis of works by Henry James influenced by Maupassant's contes and nouvelles.Following his encounter and his reading of Maupassant, James will pursue the spirit of this writer during the decade of the 1890s. However, James does not fully succeed in his attempts to imitate Maupassant. This quest will nevertheless lead to a significant redefinition of his own style.

Nivaldo Didini Coelho 07 January 2013 (has links)
In recent days, Protestant Christian churches have been marked by a desire for numerical growth as well as for subjective growth in importance, imbued with a great emphasis on personal success of the individual. The Mission of the Church as an evangelical commission has been transformed into projects which relegate the (basic) practices of caring for ones neighbor to the category of mere administrative practices which can contribute to the growth of the institution, in this way adapting to the logic of the world. When care and therapy do not have the level of objectivity required and amply witnessed to in the Gospels, both through what Jesus did and what in his divine pedagogy he taught about emptying oneself in benefit of many, it is important that we reflect on the present state of the faith communities which join in confessing Jesus as the Christ. To help in this reflection, the present dissertation seeks to analyze the possibility of developing a Therapeutic Church, through considering what the Word of God has to teach about care and therapy, as exemplified in the actions of God throughout the history of his people and continuing through the Gospels. On this basis, the dissertation seeks to contribute to the practice of care and therapy, in dialogue with Michel Henrys concept of Phenomenology of Life.

Le phénomène du fondement : essai sur la philosophie de Michel Henry / The phenomenon of foundation : essay on the philosophy of Michel Henry

De Sanctis, Francesco Paolo 19 September 2012 (has links)
In contemporary thinking (all fields included), the traditional problem of the foundation has disappeared. Rightfully: the most important results today have been obtained, in fact, without going through a methodological hypo-stasis that the concept of “foundation” imposes to the thought. Phenomenology, more than any other approach, seems to have been through this process ; for doing so, however, it kept a vocabulary often ambiguous ; it even claimed it specifically as the foundation of science. Our work finds its starting point, in the phenomenological philosophy of Michel Henry. It suggests a basis without going through the violence of a master word, and simultaneously bypassing the dogma of a theory in which the foundation would be a reaffirmation of dualism, itself an hypo-stasis (as the "being", for example). For Henry, the foundation, understood as what is unconditional, is the appearing of something. Thus he says as an absolute condition that manifests itself as a force of manifestation of being. But the path to one foundation is difficult, since there is no theming of this concept in Henry, and no possibility of “concept” basis in the “to say the The phenomenon of foundation. Anyway, the foundation itself must build its own problems. The phenomenon is the basis, through a journey to the limits of philosophy, theoretical, empirico-transcendental and experimental, trying to understand of the foundation as what is manifest and without mediation, manifest otherness finally understood from an irreducible immanence.

Mentira sexual em M. Butterfly de David Henry Hwang / Sexual mendacity in David Henry Hwangs M. Butterfly

Tatiana de Castro Lopes 23 March 2007 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to question the legitimacy of deeply rooted sexual and gender beliefs through the analysis of both David Hwangs M. Butterfly and Tennessee Williamss Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Being inquisitive regarding the imposed biological determinism and the restrictive binary system, I try to test the value and the meaning of ancient constructed dualisms such as mendacity and truth, masculine and feminine. In this ask, I am supported by the existence of enriching characters like Brick Pollitt, Maggie, Rene Gallimard and Song Liling, whose subjectivities are the core of my thesis. While the two first are crucial for the discussion on mendacity, the others are fundamental to exemplify possibilities of transgressive sexualities and gender expressions.
