Alexandre Herculano é considerado um dos introdutores e um dos maiores expoentes do Romantismo em Portugal. Sua obra, fragmentada por produções jornalísticas, literárias e historiográficas, e demonstrando uma grande unidade, soube aliar uma ampla tradição de investigação sobre os problemas políticos, sociais e culturais de seu país. Fundação Carlos Chagas Filho de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro / Este trabalho se propõe analisar a construção da obra de Alexandre Herculano como historiador, que teve início com a publicação de inúmeros artigos no jornal O Panorama e na Revista Universal Lisbonense. Nesses textos, procuramos perceber as reflexões iniciais que levaram a um projeto de maior fôlego intelectual, a História de Portugal, publicada em um momento de emergência das nacionalidades e da formação das consciências nacionais. Nesse sentido, procuramos perceber como Herculano concebeu a sua história analisando sua trajetória como historiador/político em meio às graduais transformações sociais que ocorriam em Portugal à sua época. Assim, propusemo-nos pensar o Alexandre Herculano político em constante diálogo com a conjuntura daquele período, tendo como referência a sua atuação social e a sua intervenção textual no processo então em curso. / This research proposes to analyze the construction of the work of Alexandre Herculano as a historian, which began with the publication of several articles in the journal O Panorama and in the Revista Universal Lisbonense. In these texts, we sought to detect the initial thoughts that led to a project with greater intellectual , the História de Portugal, published in a moment of emergence of the nationalities and formation of the national consciousness. In this sense, we aimed to understand how Herculano conceived his history by analyzing his trajectory as a historian/politician in the midst of the gradual social transformations taking place in Portugal at the time. This way, we proposed to think the politician Alexandre Herculano in constant dialog with the conjuncture of the period, having as references his social action and textual intervention in the process then under way.

Em razão da ainda pouca visibilidade do autor objeto deste trabalho, o primeiro capítulo apresenta informações pautadas, sobretudo, em fortuna crítica extraída de textos jornalísticos, bem como a contextualização do escritor na História e na literatura brasileira. Em seguida, realiza-se a apresentação das obras do corpus, além de uma síntese das principais linhas teóricas utilizadas. O segundo capítulo dedica-se à análise das vozes em perspectiva dialógica e, também, a um universo ficcional essencialmente masculino, conjugando a violência de classe, aquela que derrama sangue pela posse da terra, e a violência de gênero, a posse do corpo feminino. O terceiro capítulo analisa um universo essencialmente feminino: a violência contra a violência: ação e reação – a vingança e a submissão; o direito à voz e à escrita, bem como o direito à memória, e o ato dessacralizador das tradições ficcionalmente construídas, além da representação como confirmação e denúncia de uma violência instituída, aqui tornada matéria ficcional. Na fundamentação teórica básica, utilizaram-se os conceitos de dialogismo e polifonia desenvolvidos por Bakhtin, essencialmente em Problemas da poética de Dostoievski (2005). A voz do narrador e a percepção do focalizador são analisadas com base no Discurso da narrativa, de Genette (1995). Devido ao corpus, que recorta três obras cujas narradoras são mulheres, e a própria escolha temática, utilizaram-se algumas teorias dos estudos de gênero aplicados ao discurso literário, tais como a noção de gênero e de patriarcado, a partir do pensamento de Kate Millet (2010), Elaine Showalter (1994), Sandra M. Gilbert & Susan Gubar (1998) e Joan Scott (1990). No levantamento diacrônico da história de luta das mulheres, paralelamente ao desenvolvimento da crítica feminista, utilizaram-se obras pautadas pelas reflexões teóricas de Amelia Valcárcel (2005) e de Constância Lima Duarte (2003), que apresenta uma proposta de compreensão do movimento feminista no Brasil. Das análises formais, às interpretações baseadas nos estudos de gênero, confirma-se a hipótese de que a multiplicidade de vozes presentes nas narrativas estudadas concretiza-se no que Bakhtin (2005) batizou de romance polifônico. Lopes posiciona-se, implicitamente, diante desse sonoro coro e denuncia o universo trágico do patriarcado mineiro, cuja engrenagem frequentemente subjugou a mulher. / This research investigates how it is materialized in the text the dialogical-polyphonic relation between the female voices of the novels A dança dos cabelos (2001), Sombras de julho (1994) and O vestido (2006) by Carlos Herculano Lopes – a writer from Minas Gerais –, in addition to meaningful interpretations collected through the gender studies approach of the three works. Because of a yet small visibility of the author subject of this research, the first chapter presents information extracted mainly from journalistic texts as well as an overview of the writer in history and Brazilian literature. Thereafter, a presentation of the corpus takes place, plus a summary of the main theoretical lines used in this dissertation. The second chapter is dedicated to the analysis of voices in dialogical perspective, and to an investigation of an essentially male fictional universe, which combines class violence, the one that spills blood because of land possession, and gender violence, through the possession of female body. The third chapter analyzes an essentially feminine universe: violence against violence: action and reaction – revenge and submission; the right to voice and writing, as well as the right to memory and the desecrating act of traditions fictionally built, besides the study of representation as confirmation and denunciation of an established violence, transformed here in fictional matter. For the basic theoretical foundation, it was used Bakhtin’s concept of dialogism and polyphony developed mainly in Problemas da poética de Dostoievski (2005). The narrative voice and the perception of the focalizor are analyzed based on Genette’s (1995) Discurso da narrativa. Due to the corpus, which comprises three works whose narrators are women, and even to the theme choice, it was used some theories from gender studies applied to literary discourse, such as the notion of gender and patriarchy, based on the thoughts of Kate Millet (2010), Elaine Showalter (1994), Sandra M. Gilbert & Susan Gubar (1998) and Joan Scott (1990). In the diachronic survey of women's struggle history, concurrently with the development of the feminist criticism, it was utilized works founded on the theoretical reflections of Amelia Valcárcel (2005) and Constância Lima Duarte (2003), which presents a proposal of understanding of the feminist movement in Brazil. From the formal analysis to the interpretations according to gender studies, it is possible to confirm the hypothesis that the plurality of voices displayed in the studied narratives materializes what Bakhtin (2005) named as polyphonic novel. Lopes implicitly takes position before the sonorous chorus and denounces the tragic universe of the patriarchy in Minas Gerais, whose gear has often subjugated women.

Através da metalinguagem, Herculano se auto-representa enquanto escritor histórico-ficcional, ora de modo sério, ora de modo irônico. o autor português, em seus contos, novelas e romances, estabelece um diálogo constante com o leitor, chamando-lhe a atenção para o estatuto ficcional dessas narrativas ainda que elas se apóiem em suporte histórico. As. referências metalingüísticas mostram que Herculano concebe a história como um discurso verdadeiro e a literatura, como um discurso verossímil, mas mostram também que ele relativiza o verdadeiro: para o escritor luso, a ficção contém uma "verdade" mais profunda - a "verdade" . subjetiva de um povo, a sua índole, que a história não consegue captar. Outrossim, a prática da metalinguagem revela que Herculano, na qualidade de intelectual romântico, trata a literatura como uma linguagem polimórfica, liberta de regras previamente fixadas. Por fim, o discurso auto-reflexivo do criador do Eurico acusa uma incoerência filosófica na sua concepção estética: em tese, o autor lusitano vê a arte como um fenômeno gratuito, descompromissado, configurando o esteticismo da arte pela arte. The decision to resize the national history made Herculano a systematic scholar of the historical sources with a notorious creative skill and fictional talent to recreate the medieval period. In the present thesis the theoretical and aesthetic paths made by Herculano were analyzed in order to elucidate the thematic bases of his construction about the Middle Ages. To achieve this goal, the references of some fictional narratives of the author and some thoughts about the medieval Portuguese period were evaluated. In order to clarify the range of construction and medievalist reconfiguration of the Portuguese middle ages history inside the context made by Herculano, it was also discussed the historical view of Garrett captured in the analysis of some subjects of his prose and some themes present at the fictional narratives of Camilo Castelo Branco.

No que concerne ao discurso historiográfico, é analisada a obra História da Origem e do Estabelecimento da Inquisição em Portugal, de Alexandre Herculano, publicada em três volumes, entre os anos de 1854-1859, e que focaliza a primeira metade do século XVI, período do surgimento e consolidação do Santo Ofício no reino português – atendendo aos interesses da Coroa e, sobretudo, do clero luso de então. Em relação ao discurso literário, estuda-se a obra Memorial do Convento, de José Saramago, publicada em 1982 e que enfoca o governo de Dom João V, no século XVIII, com todo o fausto do seu megalômano reinado, em tempos de Inquisição. Ao realizar tal investigação, objetiva-se investir na discussão de gêneros discursivos diversos e dialogantes, no que concerne à escrita da História e da Literatura, vislumbrando a questão da tarefa crítica do intelectual em geral, seja no âmbito da historiografia, seja no da produção literária. / This doctorate thesis investigates the representations of the Inquisition and the implications of this institution for Portuguese society, based on two types of discourse: the historiographical and the literary. With regard to the historiographical discourse, an analysis was performed on the literary work History of the Origin and Establishment of the Inquisition in Portugal, by Alexandre Herculano, published in three volumes between the years of 1854 and 1859, which focuses on the first half of the Sixteenth century, the period of the emergence and consolidation of the Holy Office in the Portuguese kingdom – serving the interests of the Crown and, above all else, the Portuguese clergy of the time. Regarding the literary discourse, a study was carried out on the literary work Baltasar and Blimunda, by José Saramago, published in 1982, which focuses on the government of Dom João V, in the Eighteenth century, with all the pomp of his megalomaniacal reign, during the Inquisition. Through conducting this investigation, the objective is to invest in the discussion of various genres of dialogue and discourse, regarding the writing of History and Literature, discerning the critical task of the intellectual in general, either in the historiographical scope, or in that of literary production.
