Hermeneutic of the existence's middle-age man - Paternity, sexuality and projects of life: a view of Heidegger's light.

Trindade, Ellika 03 February 2003 (has links)
Starting from a social context marked by social transformations such as the improving use of technology and the influx of working women in the job market and the necessity of a greater flexibility and education of the citizens to make part of it, as well as the transformations occurring in the interpersonal relations, specially those happening within the family, this thesis aims at understanding how the middle-aged men act and experience this development phase of life. The middle age is a period that is marked by changes, specially those psychological ones to men. This happens due the perception of getting old, the proximity of the adult phases of the children and the competition with younger people in the job market, which can blow up the “middle age crisis". This moment can lead to a deeper thinking and to a re-direction of his existence as well as it can lead to stagnation marked by apathy and fear of making changes once the perception of the proximity to death makes part of his life. The glancing to the men at this phase of development was given emphasizing aspects as paternity, sexuality and projects of life. The method employed was based on the Martin Heidegger’s ontological-hermeneutical phenomenology, which focuses the human existence as main point. Seven men with age ranging from 41 to 52 years old were interviewed, having a socio-economical level A or B, married, and having adolescent children. The results show that inauthentic existence - a way of being where the reference is based on the “others" - revealed that main guiding line to those men in this period of their life, although the authentic existence – the assumption of existence’s responsibilities – has been shown up. The affection mixed up the deep worries towards the children was the main sense in the discourses. The inauthentic existence appeared when the future of the children was mixed up with their future, not existing a perception of the individual but the social role that guided his existence. The authentic existence was glimpsed when his worries and preoccupations with affective relations and projects of life were put in evidence. The aging process showed as being an obstacle to changes due to the self-indulgence as well as it raised some questions about of his individual and affection way of living. Those aspects put in evidence the middle age happening in a post-modern world may cause by means of questioning the human existence, in a series of transformation opportunities in a context of interpersonal relations, including the family and the society. This phase of development may proportionate to the coming generations values and beliefs that may give them opportunity to reason over the models and behavior patterns that are alternative ones to those present in the social relationships. The coming up of generations and the transmission of questionings doubts and hopes may be important tracks to be followed by those who really worry about the human existence. We can perceive as horizons that the meanings of the human existence are multiple and the phenomenology ontological-hermeneutical may contribute to wide the comprehension of the existence and may unveil by means of the language our way of living.

Reflexões hermenêutico-fenomenológicas sobre a condição paterna

This paper consists of an introduction and three chapters. The first chapter is concerned about mapping the academic articles on contemporary fatherhood. The literature review tells us that fathers live in a transition moment where in the same time they search for another way of relationships with their children, there is a lack of solid models and social conditions for the transitions of these experiences, pointing to the necessity of interventions on the sphere of public policies, supportive spaces to a conscious fatherhood and fortification of the bound between father and baby, as well of the deepening of researches about the theme of fatherhood. In general, the researches about the topic investigate the phenomenom of fatherhood from a position that still possesses normative and natural roots, without giving the necessary attention for a radical reconstruction of the ontological conditions that possibilitates those interpretations. This way, the second chapter introduces the thought of Martin Heidegger as an unity that must be considered from the history of the forgetting of being. Being the phenomenology a philosophical stream that emerges on the moment of the end of traditional philosofy and the crisis of modern science, it s a thought that brings the possibility of clarification of the ontological bases that possibilitates the unveiling of the phenomena. Important notions both from Being and Time (1927), and the later papers post the 1930 years, are presented as a form of contextualizing the heideggerian thought. Finally, the third chapter occupies of an effective reconstruction of the interpretative basis of fatherhood, showing that the difficulties experienced from the contemporary father are not, in a more originary scope, results of their lack of models, but before, from the unbrilded spirit of his epoch, which provides a deep existencial rootlessness / O presente trabalho buscou a reconstrução das bases ontológicas para a compreensão da paternidade a partir do método fenomenológico-hermenêutico, tal como proposto por Martin Heidegger.

Cognitive difference in a postmodern world : Asperger's, autism, stigma, and diagnosis

Gates, Gordon 02 September 2014 (has links)
Asperger’s was eliminated as a distinct diagnosis in the DSM-5. While controversy lingers over the assimilation of Asperger’s into autism spectrum disorder, my study explores the experience of stigma through interviews with four adults with Asperger’s and two with high functioning autism. I examine the phenomenology of autistic stigma, stigma management, and how stigma is impacted by diagnosis. The results provide an understanding of stigma as it is experienced by individuals who, in the words of one participant, suffer from a “relationship disability.” The term ASHFA evolves during the write-up to become more than an acronym for Asperger’s/high functioning autism; it comes to represent a way of being present in the world that transcends diagnosis. A relational methodology derived from Gadamer’s hermeneutics and Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology provides a philosophical framework for the project and also guides ethical engagement during the study. Methods used in the data analysis are drawn from constructivist grounded theory. The report itself may contain clues into ASHFA because I, the organizing participant, am also diagnosed with Asperger’s. I attempt to make sense of the paradoxical conclusion that diagnosis can provide a therapeutic explanation for autistic difference even as medicalization disempowers us as a validating narrative / Graduate / 0452 / 0422 / canadagates@gmail.com

Öberg Tuleus, Marianne January 2008 (has links)
Teacher education between familiarity and strangeness. An inquiry into the descriptions of lived experience told by teachers and student teachers in school and at the university. The aim of this dissertation is to study teacher education as lived experience with an overall ambition to contribute to a deeper understanding of teacher education as a complex phenomenon. A basic interest is to approach teacher education from a point of view where the lived experience of teachers and student teachers in school and on campus is brought into focus. The main question of the study is: what meanings of the phenomenon teacher education emerge, when teacher education is studied as lived experience? To empirically inquire into lived experience a hermeneutical phenomenological perspective is developed. This means a phenomenological understanding of the life-world as an intentional, lived and social world, and a hermeneutical openness to put repeated and confirmed experience into play to open for new experience. The choice of participant observation and conversational interviewing as research methods made it necessary to develop a methodological strategy involving a flexible position as well as a wakeful position. The results of the empirical study are presented in three in-betweens. Each of them focuses on a certain aspect of the life-world, as it emerges from the research question posed. The themes of unifying, modelling and of being market-oriented explore the meaning of teacher education as it comes forth between actor and institutional setting. Between actor and task, the meaning of teacher education takes shape in the lived situations of teachers and teacher students in school and on campus. When the meaning of the phenomenon teacher education unfolds between actor and actor, it is formed in the encounter with the “other”. So far, the results are consistent with earlier research on teacher education. To challenge familiar descriptions and to approach complexity, the results are put into play by the use of corporality, temporality and spatiality as existential themes. This leads to the conclusions that the meaning of the phenomenon teacher education transpires from male and female perspectives. This conclusion puts at risk the gender neutral description of women and men within teacher education as “teachers” and “students”. Secondly, the meaning of the phenomenon teacher education is intertwined with situations where personal and collective experience of teachers and student teachers is expressed in feelings of familiarity and strangeness. This means that the past in the sense of what “traditional” teacher education used to mean is challenged by transformation in terms of what teacher education could mean. Thirdly, the meaning of the phenomenon teacher education always includes different meanings as well as a prevailing meaning that is interacting with the institutional setting. This puts into play the assumption that traditions always stay the same, and that reproduction dominates transformation.

Oliveira, Rafael Tomaz de 18 December 2007 (has links)

Isso nos pe / The reflections expressed in this work had as their objective to phrase philosophically the question for the concept of principle, using the procedures of hermeneutical phenomenology to give rise to the deconstruction of sedimentations produced by legal language, catching them in their way of happening. We proceed this way because in jurist’s everyday life the word principle is employed in different ways, leading to opposite meanings. To understand such meanings we had to dive into a deep dimension into which the basis behind each one would appear. Such a fundamental dimension, which in a way supports the discourse about Law, was placed having Kant’s legal philosophy as it’s central point. Placing Kant as an element to spray philosophical thought on Law it was possible to realize how was edified the tradition over which are settled the main legal theories built in the Continent during the first half of the 20th century. This allowed us to show how Robert Alexy inherits an irreconcilable aporia: the phenomenon

Here but no further : An interview study of closeness and distance inside swedish treatment centres

Bring, Malin January 2024 (has links)
The relationship between counsellor and client has been extensively researched ever since the founding of psychotherapeutic treatment. Subsequently, it has been established as an integral and essential part of successful therapy. Yet, in regards to substance use treatment aforementioned research is still lacking. Few studies shed light on such relationships – even fewer on relationships formed within the unique settings of live-in treatment centres. Furthermore, the emotional handling of inter-relational work from the perspective of the professional is still remarkably absent from the scholarly world. Notably, professional perspectives are mainly presented in situations of boundary breaking behaviour and ethical misconduct. The aim of the present study was, consequently, to research how professionals conduct, care, and convey the phenomena of counsellor-client connections that are constituted within the above stated context. In order to fully capture the lived experiences of addiction counsellors, a hermeneutic-phenomenological approach was applied throughout – acting as both theoretical and methodological ground. Accordingly, a total of five semi-structured qualitative interviews were carried out and analysed through a hermeneutic-phenomenological lens. The result presents several significant findings in regards to how the professionals view boundaries, closeness and control in substance use treatment settings, which primarily include a certain all-encompassing duality: role changing is perceived as beneficial, albeit debilitating; closeness is seen as imperative, yet distance as integral; working with the self equates to working on the self. Overall, professional progression appears to echo that of the client’s – a supporting network, along with being earnest and daring, presents itself as keys for facilitating conducive change. Implications of above-mentioned co-occurrences are discussed, including suggestions for future research.

The value and benefits of learning a foreign language in community settings in the UK : older adults' perceptions of what this does and means for them

Hooker, Rebecca January 2011 (has links)
This is a qualitative and context-specific study into the meaning and value attributed by older people to learning a foreign language in their own time and for reasons mainly unconnected to attainment and qualifications. There appear to be two common misconceptions of the British as language learners. The first is that they are ‘language barbarians’ (Tomlinson, 2004), ever ready to rely on the global dominance of English as a lingua franca and unwilling to learn other languages. The second is that learning a language voluntarily and for leisure purposes (‘leisure language learning’) is regarded as essentially frivolous and of little value. Equally much scholarly research, especially concerning second language acquisition (SLA), implies that language learning is a relatively unsuccessful and difficult endeavour for adults. This study challenges these views. Far from being reluctant ‘language barbarians’, who find learning another language onerous and unrewarding, the findings suggest otherwise. The older (aged 45+) adult learners in this enquiry are not only resoundingly positive about ‘leisure language learning’ but they derive significant benefits in many areas of their lives from learning, of their own volition, and seemingly against the odds. These benefits include but extend beyond functional transactions, such as ordering food when abroad. Participants’ perceptions of the personal value of ‘leisure language learning’ include its role in providing and facilitating: mental stimulus and wellbeing; improved communication; fewer risks when travelling; a repositioning of the self; a purposeful pastime; cultural enrichment; awareness of the ‘other’, as well as the various benefits of social interaction. Wider advantages for society in general are also implied. Empirical data were collected by means of in-depth, conversational interviews, exploring participants’ personal histories of encounters with and learning foreign languages. A hermeneutic ‘fusion of horizons’ (Gadamer, 2001) has then allowed for a more comprehensive and multi-faceted interpretation and understanding of the experience of adult ‘leisure language learning’ in community settings. The resulting text describes the nature and essence of the phenomenon of ‘leisure language learning’ embracing its meaning for, and impact upon, older adults. This incorporates a way of thinking regarding language pedagogy which goes beyond the usual ‘commonplaces’ and ‘discourses of performance, competency and skills’ (Phipps, 2007:2), common to much SLA and linguistic research. At the same time a deeper appreciation of the adult language learning experience is more likely to engender a ‘tactful’ and ‘action-sensitive pedagogy’ (van Manen, 1997:168-169): responsive to learners’ expectations and motivation, and taking their backgrounds and routes to learning into account.

Anthropological Expressive Modalities of Disorientation: A Biblical and Pastoral Theology

Harrichand, James 11 1900 (has links)
Recent years have seen a plethora of research accomplished with respect to OT poetic prayers, predominantly in relation to the Psalter, with a least one ramification being a lack of engagement with the full spectrum of expressions especially within OT prosaic prayers. In addition to this, contemporary pastoral literature continues to exhibit an underdevelopment with respect to the full anthropological spectrum of expressions amidst grief especially within intercultural contexts. Observing both lacunas in scholarship, this dissertation operationalizes a Revisionist Method of Mutual Critical Correlation as its metamethod while incorporating Renewed Form Criticism, Hermeneutical Phenomenology, annd a Liberative Intercultural Praxis as it pursues a twofold objective: 1) an examination of the multivalent expressions (i.e., verbal, physical, and emotional) that leading Israelites pray-ers within the ancient context of OT prosaic prayers communicated to/before God while in the crux of disorientation, and 2) an investigation into the multivalent expressions (i.e., verbal, physical, and emotional) that leading Christian pray-ers wtihin an intercultural context (i.e., among Canadian immigrants from Guyana and Vietnam) communicated to/before God amidst the phenomenon of grief. At the heart of attending to this twofold mission is the configuration of an expressive domain of anthropological expressive modalities of disorientation communicated to/before God, along with their essence or meaning. Sensitized to such an expressive domain with its multivalent significance, contemporary pastoral caregivers would thus be better equipped to foster compassionate, liberative intercultural pastoral care for intercultural Christian communities coping with grief.
