A triangulation of relationships: Godfrey Wilson, Zacharia Mawere and their Bemba informants in Broken Hill, Northern Rhodesia, 1938–1941

Mbewe, Mary January 2015 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / The rich corpus of postcolonial scholarly engagement on indigenous intermediaries, interpreters, clerks and assistants has a made a strong argument for the active participation of African agents in social scientific knowledge production on Africa. This literature has highlighted the complex and negotiated nature of fieldwork in African anthropology. While this literature has begun to deepen our understanding of the knowledge work of anthropologists and their research assistants, it has not adequately explored the relationship between anthropologists and informants in what one scholar has recently called ‘a triangulation of relationships’ between the anthropologist, the assistant and the informant. This research project proposes to explore these relationships in a detailed case study: that of the British anthropologist Godfrey Wilson (1908–1944), his interpreter Zachariah Mawere, and three primary informants, during three years of pioneering research into the effects of migrant labour at Broken Hill, Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) between 1938 and 1941. Using a close textual reading and detailed analysis of Wilsons Bemba and English fieldnotes held in the Godfrey and Monica Wilson collection at the University of Cape Town’s African Studies Library, the study will apply a micro-historical and biographical approach. It will seek to reconstruct the biographies and anthropological contributions of one interpreter and three central Bemba informants in order to explore the micro-politics of knowledge production in African anthropology.

Numerical Modelling of Extreme Hydrodynamic Loading on Coastal Structures

Sarjamee, Samieh January 2016 (has links)
Natural disasters usually occur without any warning. They can leave trail of destruction and cause much tragedy. We are at a time when we witness fast technological advances; hence, we need to apply the force of scientific advancements to decrease economic losses and the number of human deaths. Tsunami is one of the extreme environmental events that leaves nothing but a path of death and destruction, and as a result, it is essential to understand this phenomenon and identify the mitigation strategies. Several mitigation strategies have been proposed so far; however, more investigations are still required to achieve an acceptable solution. Researchers around the world are studying different aspects of this phenomenon. One of the proposed solutions that has received much attention is designing tsunami-resistant structures which can withstand the force of a tsunami bore. Various studies have been done so far to understand the base shear force of tsunami bore on structures. The focus of this thesis is to improve and better understand the characteristics of the tsunami base shear forces on structures. Hence, in this thesis, two numerical studies were proposed and performed with the main goal of estimating the total tsunami forces on structure under two different conditions. Those include structures with various cross sections, as well as positioning a mitigation wall at an appropriate location relative to the structure. The first study focused on developing a numerical model to study the relationship between tsunami forces and the geometry of the structure. The main goal of this study was to define a numerical model capable of simulating this case precisely. To ensure the accuracy of the model, a comparison was carried out between the results of the numerical model and experimental test performed at the NRC-CHC (National Research Council- Canadian Hydraulics Center) laboratory in Ottawa, Canada and Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL), Belgium, which revealed a very good agreement between the results of the experimental test and numerical model. Further, the validated model was applied to investigate the tsunami force on structures with various cross sections. The second study focus was on developing a numerical model for understanding the role of mitigation wall (a novel idea proposed as a mitigation strategy by the second author of technical paper 2) on reducing the exerted force of tsunami on structures. After developing various models and applying several turbulence models, a valuable result was obtained which demonstrated that a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model seems to be an excellent approach for predicting the tsunami forces on the structure with a mitigation wall in the direction of the flow. The results of this study will be used to better estimate the tsunami forces exerted on coastal structures which will light the path to the main goal of designing tsunami resistant-structures.

The popularity and influence of Shakespeare's English and Roman historical plays in America from the beginnings to 1950

Warren, Ruth 01 January 1955 (has links)
Poetry and romance in Shakespeare's non-historical plays have come into their own again with revivals of The Tempest directed by Margaret Webster and with the production of As You Like It, which features Katherine Hepburn. Unfortunately, the time limit of this paper has been set for the end of 1950, so it is only possible to mentin in passing Laurence Oliver's and Vivian Leigh's exciting and unique idea of presenting Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra and Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra on alternate nights. In spite of early curtains, which make it necessary for the theatre-goer to eat his dinner in a hurry, the two Cleopatras have been playing to packed houses, first in London, then in New York in 1951 and 1952. From 1750 to 1950, I should like to consider each of the history plays separtely and in detain, to show how and why their stars rose and fell upon the American horison.

Värdet av sentimentalitet: Att reda ut kopplingen mellan människa och objekt

Friberg, Beatrice, Wahlstein, Elsa January 2023 (has links)
In this paper, the topic of sentimentality and ensoulment will be explored. Sentimentality is something very personal and difficult to define and linking it to a design process is challenging. The English term ensoulment, which will also be discussed in the work, refers to the value that a design takes in and how the design can convey a certain feeling. These two concepts related to design can describe how a user values an artefact. There are several articles discussing sentimentality in design and how important it is to incorporate it into a design process, but very few have applied it and produced prototypes or products. Working with a concept linked to emotions and personal memories makes it difficult to get a general approach in a design process. The outline of this work questions in what way it is possible to achieve sentimentality in design by working with four terms: engagement, history, augmentation, and perceived durability. The methods chosen to be applied in this work are research by design, focus group, thematic analysis, and a look & feel prototype. These methods were chosen because they were considered suitable for answering the research question. Two focus groups were conducted based on this, where participants were encouraged to discuss their own views on sentimentality and how and what they value in objects they value. The results of the study show that it is not possible to actively create a product that conveys sentimentality, but it is possible to trigger a sentimental feeling in users by using links to emotions and memories. However, the results show that ensoulment is something that can be better incorporated into a design process to create value for the user. The conclusion drawn is that it is not possible to create a sentimental value in a new product, but it is possible to trigger sentimentality using different senses. Using the four terms will mean that a design has a greater chance of being ensouled from the start.

Community-Based Randomized Controlled Trial of Mom Power Parenting Intervention for Mothers with Interpersonal Trauma Histories and their Young Children

Rosenblum, Katherine L., Musik, Maria, Morelen, Diana M., Alfalfa, Emily A., Miller, Nicole, Waddell, Rachel, Schuster, Melisa M., Ribaudo, Julie 25 June 2017 (has links)
We conducted a study to evaluate the effectiveness of Mom Power, a multifamily parenting intervention to improve mental health and parenting among high-risk mothers with young children in a community-based randomized controlled trial (CB-RCT) design. Participants (N = 122) were high-risk mothers (e.g., interpersonal trauma histories, mental health problems, poverty) and their young children (age <6 years), randomized either to Mom Power, a parenting intervention (treatment condition), or weekly mailings of parenting information (control condition). In this study, the 13-session intervention was delivered by community clinicians trained to fidelity. Pre- and post-trial assessments included mothers’ mental health symptoms, parenting stress and helplessness, and connection to care. Mom Power was delivered in the community with fidelity and had good uptake (>65%) despite the risk nature of the sample. Overall, we found improvements in mental health and parenting stress for Mom Power participants but not for controls; in contrast, control mothers increased in parent-child role reversal across the trial period. The benefits of Mom Power treatment (vs. control) were accentuated for mothers with interpersonal trauma histories. Results of this CB-RCT confirm the effectiveness of Mom Power for improving mental health and parenting outcomes for high-risk, trauma-exposed women with young children.

SELECTIVE PREDATION DIFFERENTIALLY MODULATES ECOLOGICAL AND EVOLUTIONARY DISEASE DYNAMICS

Stephanie O Gutierrez (14216189) 06 December 2022 (has links)

Predators and parasites are critical, interconnected members of the community and have the potential to influence host populations. Predators, in particular, can have direct and indirect impacts on disease dynamics. By removing hosts and their parasites, predators alter both host and parasite populations and ultimately shape disease transmission. Our ability to accurately predict disease dynamics requires understanding the ecological effects of predation on prey and host densities and its role in the coevolution of host resistance and parasite virulence. While the impact of predators on disease dynamics has received considerable attention, research has focused on selective predation on infected prey. There is, however, substantial evidence that some predators avoid infected prey, preferentially attacking uninfected individuals. Such different strategies of prey selectivity by predators modulate host-parasite interactions, changing the fitness payoffs both for hosts and their parasites. I use empirical results and theoretical predictions as a framework to discuss the mechanisms by which predation for infected versus uninfected individuals can affect disease dynamics. First, by integrating hypotheses from behavioral ecology and disease ecology, I outlined novel perspectives that complement the prevailing view of selective predation of infected individuals (Chapter 1). Then, exploring short-term ecological outcomes and long-term host-parasite coevolution, I investigated patterns of Daphnia dentifera host population densities and host susceptibility over several generations under different types of predation pressure, including selective predation on infected and uninfected individuals (Chapter 2). Finally, building on the results of this research, I developed a high school project-based lesson plan that facilitates the instruction of the nature of science, implementing on-going ecological research in activities to improve student learning based on a constructivist approach to learning (Chapter 3). Together this research highlights the differential ecological and evolutionary outcomes of host-parasite interactions under varying community contexts.
