Počátky portugalského písemnictví / The Beginnings of Portuguese Literature

Váchová, Petra January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to map out the beginning of literature written in the domestic language, i.e. Galician-Portuguese and later Portuguese, as it started to separate from works written in Latin. The first part of the thesis describes how the Portuguese language evolved from Latin, which in turn evolved from the Indo-European language. A colloquial form of Latin began to emerge, splitting later into several dialects. The Galician- Portuguese language appears and individual Romance languages start to form. The new Portuguese language undergoes a period of formation, with the first phase being the Old Portuguese, followed by the classical period, until Portuguese became the language we know now. The second part of the thesis describes the formation and early phases of Portuguese writing, both literary and non-literary, including a list of genres that prevailed during the beginnings of Portuguese literature, and a selection of excerpts of the oldest texts and their translations. Key words: Old Portuguese, old texts, evolution of language, Portuguese philology, translation

Tat’ána Vykypělová: Wege zum Neutschechischen. Studien zur Geschichte der tschechischen Schriftsprache: Buchbesprechung

Kuße, Holger 16 July 2020 (has links)

Holy scripture and the meanings of the Eucharist in late medieval England, C. 1370-1430

Pink, Stephen Arthur January 2011 (has links)
This thesis examines how, in late-medieval England, uses of Scripture and associated written discourses expanded to encompass the sacramental functions hitherto privileged to the bread and wine of the Mass. This process, reflecting the longstanding if implicit importance of scriptural symbolism to the medieval Eucharist, also bears witness to a major cultural shift in this period: the assignment to words of the same powers that had underpinned the function of visual, non-verbal symbols in medieval religion and society. As Chapter Two demonstrates, this process was starkly exposed in John Wyclif’s vision of an English religion centred upon the sacrament of the preached word of Scripture, rather than on the Mass. As Chapter Three shows, this was the vision that Wyclif’s followers sought to realize, even if they may have achieved their aims only within a limited band of followers. However, Wyclif’s vision was powerful precisely because its relevance was not confined to Wycliffites. Chapter Four charts how the same substitution was taking place through the dissemination in English of ‘Scripture’, which, in its broadest sense, encompassed meditations upon depictions of Christ crucified as well as preaching. The greatest danger of Wycliffite thought to the late-medieval Church rested in its potential to increase lay awareness of this process. This threat was reflected in the restrictions placed by the English Church upon lay use of religious writings in the early fifteenth century. Nonetheless, as Chapter Five shows through a reading of one of Wyclif’s sternest critics, Thomas Netter, the eucharistic function of ‘Scripture’ had not disappeared but had to be occluded. This occlusion represents the most significant shift in the eucharistic function of ‘Scripture’ in the fifteenth century, allowing its use to develop further without threatening the Mass. This thesis concludes that the unacknowledged yet increasingly central role of ‘Scripture’ helps to explain why, at the Reformation, a scripturally-based religion seemed so quickly to supplant one to which images had been fundamental.

Língua e sociedade: a ordem na escola republicana paulista / Language and Society: the order in São Paulo Republican school

Ribeiro, Priscilla Barbosa 21 October 2015 (has links)
O recorte linguístico considera as posições do sujeito e do clítico. / This work deals with an interdisciplinary object, in which we refer language issues and socio-historical linked to Portuguese Paulista in Sao Paulo early twentieth century. We perform the description and analysis of sentential constituent order in two schools of the capital, in addition to the analysis of institutions and their subjects, as well as its place in the history of the city, seeking to understand them in the dynamics of São Paulo of the early century. The linguistic focus considers the positions of subject and clitic. The corpus is composed of texts written by teachers, principals and secretaries of the Normal School (mostly female) and the Capital Gymnasium (exclusively male), important institutions for their role in the dynamics of social reorganization and politics in a highly heterogeneous society in which tensions had repercussions in various forms of discrimination in all aspects of local culture, including the language. In order to understand our object, we work with linguistic data and materials that could bring to present some of the reality of the time and to recover their views. For this, we analyze educational magazines, books, grammars, speeches and other sources. The perspective adopted is interdisciplinary, and aimed to enable an analysis of the inserted language use in social relations, taking on assumptions of sociolinguistics, sociology, anthropology and history, aiming at the integrated understanding of the phenomenon.

Construções -se em anúncios publicitários de revistas paulistanas / Constructions with pronpronoum Se in advertisements of magazines from São Paulo

Coan, Giovanna Ike 29 September 2011 (has links)
This research investigates constructions with the pronoun se in advertisements published in magazines from 1890 to 1920. At the turn of the 20th century, many changes took place in the city of São Paulo, in advertising and in Brazilian Portuguese (BP). Studies have shown that, from that moment on, instead of producing the socalled passive-se, BP has been using the active construction with se, in which the verb does not agree with the internal argument. In the present analysis, the linguistic phenomenon is not taken as an isolated part of the advertisements, but is observed in relation to the other verbal and non-verbal elements of the text and also the social, historical and cultural context. Reading the advertisements as a whole showed that the verb agreed with a topic, co-indexed with a null subject, which referred to a typographically salient element in the page. Through this type of examination, we could identify both active and passive structures; at the same time, the pronoun se denoted that the semantic agent was human and indefinite. The different kinds of constructions with se also revealed that a social structural feature of São Paulo, viz. the alternation between hierarchical and impersonal relationships, could reach the linguistic domain.
