Transcriptional Regulatory Networks in the Mouse Hippocampus.

<p> <p>&nbsp / </p> </p> <p align="left">This study utilized large-scale gene expression data to define the regulatory networks of genes expressing in the hippocampus to which multiple disease pathologies may be associated. Specific aims were: ident i fy key regulatory transcription factors (TFs) responsible for observed gene expression patterns, reconstruct transcription regulatory networks, and prioritize likely TFs responsible for anatomically restricted gene expression. Most of the analysis was restricted to the CA3 sub-region of Ammon&rsquo / s horn within the hippocampus. We identified 155 core genes expressing throughout the CA3 sub-region and predicted corresponding TF binding site (TFBS) distributions. Our analysis shows plausible transcription regulatory networks for twelve clusters of co-expressed genes. We demonstrate the validity of the predictions by re-clustering genes based on TFBS distributions and found that genes tend to be correctly assigned to groups of previously identified co-expressing genes with sensitivity of 67.74% and positive predictive value of 100%. Taken together, this study represents one of the first to merge anatomical architecture, expression profiles and transcription regulatory potential on such a large scale in hippocampal sub-anatomy.</p>

Rural development in Southeast Sweden - three different views and their consequences for the agrarian landscape This paper deals with the future for the rural areas of the southeast province of Östergötland, Sweden. The aim is to unveil, analyse and compare different views on rural development and their consequences for the agrarian landscape. Three views are considered, namely that of the different levels of Governments and their departments, that of the farmers and landowners and, finaly, that of the inhabitants of the rural areas. Differences in the views upon rural development is reflected in differences in the ways of thinking of landscapes. Is the open, and actively cultivated, landscape the ideal for all? Who is to decide what needs or ought to be done to achieve certain desired values and/or goals – and who pays for it? The one thing that is, and should be, clear from the beginning is that all development, whether positive or negative in an area, bears consequences for the landscape. What shapes the development of the rural areas is to have – or should have – remains to be seen, but regardless form or shape it will effect the agrarian landscape.

Today Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB hasn’t got any method to determine how many warning alarms they need on their machines and how they should be mounted to use their full potential. At the moment a travel alarm is usually placed in the front of the machine and a reverse alarm in the back. Then a measurement of the sound pressure level around the machine is performed to see if it is enough to pass the limit according to different ISO-standards. Otherwise they have to mount some extra alarms and then do the measurements again until the standards are fulfilled. The aim of this thesis work is to develop a method for determine how many alarms Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB need on the machines, and also how they should be mounted to fulfil the different criteria according to ISO-standards in the early phase of construction. From the different divisions within Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB (LHD, SDE and TME) arrived four different alarms, which are used on their machines. Sound pressure level measurements were conducted on these, in the anechoic chamber at audiological research centre at the university hospital in Örebro. In the LMS Test.Lab software a measurement sphere was built around the horns and based on the data obtained at the anechoic chamber sound directivity plots were made. Together with earlier machine measurement data from Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB, an Excel program was made constituting an example of how the horns should be mounted. LHD = Loaders and trucks/underground rock excavation SDE = Surface drilling equipment TME = Tunnelling and mining equipment / Idag har Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB inte någon metod för att bestämma hur många varningsalarm som behövs på sina maskiner samt var de ska placeras så de utnyttjar sin fulla potential. I nuläget monteras ett signalhorn vid främre delen och ett backlarm i bakre delen av maskinen. Sedan utförs en ljudtrycksmätning runt maskinen för att kontrollera om man uppfyller kraven från olika ISO-standader. Annars monteras fler alarm och mätningen utförs på nytt tills standarderna uppfylls. Detta examensarbete har som mål att ta fram en metod som bestämmer hur många alarm Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB behöver på sina maskiner, samt hur de skall placeras för att uppfylla kriterierna från olika ISO-standarder redan i konstruktionsstadiet.  Från de olika avdelningarna inom Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB (LHD, SDE och TME) mottogs fyra olika alarm, som används på maskinerna. På dessa utfördes ljudtrycksmätningar i det ekofria rummet vid audiologiskt forskningscentrum på universitetssjukhuset i Örebro. I programmet LMS Test.Lab byggdes en sfär av mätpunkter runt alarmen och baserat på insamlade data från det ekofria rummet konstruerades direktivitetsdiagram. Tillsammans med data som Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB redan hade från tidigare mätningar på maskiner gjordes ett Excel-program, som ger ett exempel på hur alarmen bör monteras. Dereglement passager de corps heterogenes is a work for flute (doubling piccolo and alto flute), clarinet (doubling bass clarinet), horn, piano, violin, cello and contrabass which explores the concept of "virus" within a musical form similar to the theme and variations. During its elaboration, I imagined what could metaphorically be the effects of different virus on what I define as "musical organisms". This idea suggested a number of variations that could serve as laboratories to experiment different levels of interaction between the virus and the musical organisms. This thesis consists of the musical score and a detailed analysis.

An investigation of design and execution alternatives for the committed choice non-deterministic logic languages

The general area of developing, applying and studying new and parallel models of computation is motivated by a need to overcome the limits of current Von Neumann based architectures. A key area of research in understanding how new technology can be applied to Al problem solving is through using logic languages. Logic programming languages provide a procedural interpretation for sentences of first order logic, mainly using a class of sentence called Horn clauses. Horn clauses are open to a wide variety of parallel evaluation models, giving possible speed-ups and alternative parallel models of execution. The research in this thesis is concerned with investigating one class of parallel logic language known as Committed Choice Non-Deterministic languages. The investigation considers the inherent parallel behaviour of Al programs implemented in the CCND languages and the effect of various alternatives open to language implementors and designers. This is achieved by considering how various Al programming techniques map to alternative language designs and the behaviour of these Al programs on alternative implementations of these languages. The aim of this work is to investigate how Al programming techniques are affected (qualitatively and quantitatively) by particular language features. The qualitative evaluation is a consideration of how Al programs can be mapped to the various CCND languages. The applications considered are general search algorithms (which focuses on the committed choice nature of the languages); chart parsing (which focuses on the differences between safe and unsafe languages); and meta-level inference (which focuses on the difference between deep and flat languages). The quantitative evaluation considers the inherent parallel behaviour of the resulting programs and the effect of possible implementation alternatives on this inherent behaviour. To carry out this quantitative evaluation we have implemented a system which improves on the current interpreter based evaluation systems.
