Quintet for Woodwinds

The purpose of writing the quintet for Woodwinds is to produce composition for woodwind ensemble containing elements of significant musical form. Much of the quintet music. by composers such as, Reicha and Taffanel is characterized by pure virtuosity of style and lack of significant musical form. The Quintet for Woodwinds utilizes the conventional instrumentation for a woodwind quintet, that is, flute, oboe, clarinet (Bb), Horn in F,, and bassoon. In the Third Movement (Playfully) the piccolo is to be used as an alternate instrument with the flute.

Somaliland: post-war nation-building and international relations, 1991-2006.

Abstract This thesis is intended to explore the international relations of emerging nation-building in the Somali coast, with particular reference to the un-recognised Republic of Somaliland in the north-western Horn of Africa region. This study focuses on the international relations of Somaliland’s international quest for recognition, linked to its own culturally-rooted internal reconciliatory post-war nation-building efforts. Informed by written as well as first-hand research interviews, particular focus is placed in this study on the interplay of internal and external forces in shaping a strategy by Somaliland’s elites for acquiring international recognition and national selfdetermination. These are placed within the broader regional and international context of attempts to resuscitate the Somali state, an endeavour offering a fitting assessment of different modalities of African nation-building within the greater Somali environment. In relative analytic terms, the competitive international relations of nation-building in Somaliland and state reconstitution in southern Somalia informs the underlying hypothesis of this thesis: Somaliland’s example as a study in the efficacy of the internally-driven, culturally-rooted ‘bottom-up’ approach to post-war nation-building and regional stability, and the implications this holds for prioritising reconciliation between indigenous traditions and modernity in achieving stability in nation-building. By contrast, the internationally-backed ‘top-down’ approach to reconstituting a Mogadishu-based Somali state remains elusive. Yet, the international status quo regarding the affording of diplomatic recognition to what are normally considered secessionist ‘break-away’ regions of internationally recognised states, complicates Somaliland’s culturally rooted ‘bottom-up’ modalities. It also challenges the African Union (AU) during the ‘good governance’ era of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), a context within which Somaliland fits comfortably as a good citizen of the international community. The international relations of the Somaliland nation-building enterprise is approached from a ‘quadrilateral framework’ of interactive elements to the Somaliland experience: Reconciliation, Reconstruction, Religion and Recognition. This framework informs the four core chapters of the thesis.

Papel do complexo receptor glutamato/NMDA e óxido nítrico no corno dorsal da medula espinal da antinocicepção induzida pelo medo / Role of the glutamate/NMDA and NO receptor complex in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord in the fear-induced antinociception in mice

Quando confrontado com situações de medo os roedores apresentam respostas comportamentais (ex., luta, fuga, imobilidade e vocalização) e neurovegetativas (taquicardia, hipertensão e defecação) que caracterizam a reação de defesa. Em geral essas respostas são acompanhadas de antinocicepção. Estudos demonstram um papel do óxido nítrico (NO) e de receptores NMDA (N-metil-D-aspartato) na mediação de respostas nociceptivas no corno dorsal da medula espinal. Resultados do nosso laboratório demonstraram que a exposição a uma situação ameaçadora, como o labirinto em cruz elevado aberto ou sem paredes (LCEa), provoca antinocicepção de alta magnitude em ratos e camundongos. Assim, o presente estudo teve por objetivo investigar o papel do complexo receptor glutamato/NMDA e NO no corno dorsal da medula espinal na resposta antinociceptiva induzida pela exposição ao LCEa. Camundongos receberam injeção por via intratecal (i.t.) de NMDA (0; 0,4 ou 0,8 nmol/5,0 l) para avaliar seus efeitos intrínsecos sobre a nocicepção. Enquanto a dose de 0,8 nmol de NMDA provocou efeitos nociceptivos, a dose de 0,4 nmol se mostrou desprovida de efeitos. Em seguida, nosso estudo avaliou os efeitos do NMDA (0; 0,1; 0,2 ou 0,4 nmol, i.t.) na nocicepção induzida pela injeção de formalina 2,5% na pata traseira direita do camundongo. Nenhuma dose de NMDA aumentou o tempo de lambidas na pata durante os 10 minutos do teste. Assim, investigamos os efeitos da injeção i.t. de NMDA (0; 0,1; 0,2 ou 0,4 nmol) na antinocicepção induzida pela exposição ao ambiente aversivo (LCEa) ou não aversivo (LCE fechado: quatro braços com paredes; LCEf) em camundongos pré-tratados com formalina a 2,5% na pata traseira direita, durante 10 minutos. O tratamento com NMDA (0,4 nmol) reverteu parcialmente a antinocicepção induzida pela exposição ao LCEa, sem afetar a resposta dos animais expostos ao LCEf. Para avaliar se os efeitos anti-antinociceptivos do NMDA (0,4 nmol) dependem da síntese de NO, camundongos receberam injeção i.t. combinada de L-NAME (N-nitro-L-arginina-metil-éster), um inibidor da NOS, e NMDA. O pré-tratamento com L-NAME (40 nmoles/5,0 l i.t.) bloqueou seletivamente os efeitos anti-antinociceptivos do NMDA. Tomados em conjunto, nossos resultados sugerem que a antinocicepção induzida pela exposição ao LCEa pode ser parcialmente revertida pela ativação de receptores NMDA e indicam que esse efeito depende da síntese de NO no corno dorsal da medula espinal de camundongos. / Rodents exposed to threatening situations (e.g., prey-predator interactions) usually display defensive behaviors (e.g., fight, flight, freezing, vocalization), and neurovegetative (e.g., tachycardia, hypertension, defecation) responses characterized as a fear reaction. Commonly, these responses are accompanied by antinociception. Evidence showing that the glutamate NMDA (N-methyl-d-aspartate) receptor and nitric oxide (NO) complex located within the dorsal horn of the spinal cord in the mediation of the nociceptive response have instigated researchers to investigate the role of the NMDA/NO on some types of fear-induced antinociception. This study investigated the role of the glutamate-NMDA receptor complex and NO in the dorsal horn of the spinal cord of mice in the antinociception induced by a potentially aversive situation, i.e., an exposure to an open elevated plus maze (oEPM: four open arms). Mice were intrathecally (i.t.) injected with N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA: 0, 0.4 or 0.8 nmol/5.0 l) to assess its intrinsic effects upon nociception. Results showed that NMDA at 0.8 nmol, but not at 0.4 nmol, was able to induce intrinsic nociceptive effect. When injected in animals pre-treated with formalin 2.5% into the right hind paw (nociceptive test), NMDA (0, 0.1, 0.2 or 0.4 nmol, i.t.) did not change time spent licking the formalin injected paw. Then, we investigated the effects of NMDA injection (0, 0.1, 0.2 or 0.4 nmol, i.t.) on nociceptive response induced by formalin test in mice exposed to the oEPM (aversive situation) or enclosed EPM (eEPM: four enclosed arms; control situation) for 10 minutes. NMDA treatment (0.4 nmol) partially reversed the antinociception induced by oEPM exposure without affect nociception in mice exposed to the eEPM. Finally, we investigated whether the anti-antinociceptive effect of NMDA would be dependent on NO synthesis by injecting L-NAME (N-nitro-L-arginine-methyl-ester) i.t., a inhibitor of NOS (nitric oxide synthase), 10 minutes before NMDA injection. L-NAME pretreatment (40 nmol/5.0 l; i.t.) selectivelly blocked anti-antinociceptive effect of NMDA 0.4 nmol. Taken together, our results suggest that antinociception induced by oEPM exposure (i) is, at least in part, reversed by NMDA receptors activation and (ii) this NMDA effect seems to be dependent on NO synthesis within the dorsal horn of the spinal cord in mice.

Afin de répondre à la demande croissante de nouveaux services, les objets que nous utilisons au quotidien (les smartphones, les voitures, les avions, etc.) tendent à intégrer de plus en plus de systèmes radio tandis que l’espace disponible pour l’intégration de ces éléments est de plus en plus réduit. Ces systèmes radio nécessitent l’utilisation de plusieurs antennes devant répondre à des critères de compacité, d’isolation, de coût, etc. À titre d’illustration, un smartphone contient plusieurs antennes pour assurer des fonctions telles que la téléphonie, la navigation, la connexion à internet par WiFi, les liaisons Bluetooth, la technologie NFC (Near-Field Communications) et ce nombre tend à s’accroitre considérablement avec l’émergence de nouveaux services. Le même phénomène se retrouve également au niveau des plateformes aéroportées où des fonctions telles que la communication, la navigation, le radar, etc. sont utilisées. Cela conduit donc à la nécessité de réduire le nombre d’antennes en regroupant par exemple plusieurs fonctions au sein d’une même et unique antenne. Dans de précédents travaux de recherches, J. Euzière a démontré la possibilité de combiner une fonction radar et une seconde fonction (ici de communication) en utilisant un réseau de 16 monopoles initialement dédié au seul radar, grâce au Time Modulated Array (TMA). De cette façon, les deux fonctions utilisaient la même fréquence et étaient alimentées par une seule source. L’objectif principal de cette thèse est de proposer une solution d’antenne multifonction pour radar et communication encore plus compacte (constituée d’une seule antenne). L’idée est de partir d’une solution antennaire déjà existante et d’y apporter les modifications nécessaires à l’ajout d’une seconde fonction, sans pour autant augmenter la surface de l’antenne ni la complexité du système. / In order to respond to the increasingly demand of new services, the objects we use on a daily basis (such as mobile phones, cars, airplanes etc.), tend to integrate more and more radio systems while the space available is limited. These radio systems require the use of many antennas that must meet multiple requirements such as compactness, isolation, costs, etc. A smart-phone, for example, contains several antennas for global navigation satellite system (GNSS), WiFi, TV, FM radio, Bluetooth, near-field communications (NFC) and the number is expected to increase as new systems are added. Another example is in airborne platforms where multiple functions such as communication, navigation, radar, electronic warfare are used. This leads to the need of reducing the number of associated antennas by regrouping several radio functions into a single antenna. However, combining the functionality of several antennas into one shared radiating element while maintaining the functionality of the various radio systems presents a great challenge. During its Ph.D, J. Euzière demonstrated the possibility to combine a radar function and a secondary function from a 16-monopole array originally dedicated to radar operation by using Time Modulated Array (TMA) technique. By this way, the two functions were operating at the same frequency and the system was powered by a single source.The main objective of this thesis is to propose a more compact antenna (a single antenna) dedicated to radar and communication operations instead of using antenna array as J. Euzière did it. The idea is to start from an existing antenna solution and make the necessary modifications to add a second function without adding additional surface and complexity. As we are interested in radar applications, we will choose a directive antenna: a horn antenna. The goal is then to study the possibility to modify the radiation pattern of the horn antenna through controllable elements (slots) and to transmit a direct modulated signal at the antenna level for the communication function. Furthermore, polarization diversity is an attractive way to increase the isolation between two applications. Thus, this aspect will be taken into account in the design of the antenna solution.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart skrev sammanlagt fyra konserter för valthorn och orkester. Samtliga konserter är vanligt förekommande provspelningsstycken för valthorn. I följande uppsats har jag skrivit om Mozarts fjärde hornkonsert och hur jag framför den på bästa sätt för att vinna en provspelning. Mitt största fokus har legat på hur jag på bästa sätt gestaltar utvalda passager i stycket. Jag har även skrivit en bakgrund om Mozarts liv och hans hornkonserter samt om hans relation till hornisten Joseph Leutgeb. Mina arbetsmetoder under studien har till största del varit egen övning och handledning från lärare. Olika inspelningar av hornkonserten har inspirerat mig och påverkat min egen tolkning av stycket. Jag har även gjort en kort analys av stycket vilket har gjort att jag fått en bättre kunskap om styckets form och uppbyggnad. Resultatet av mitt arbete har gjort att jag fått en bättre uppfattning om stycket och vilka detaljer som är viktigast att tänka på. Dans cette thèse, nous avons décrit une machine a inférence parallèle pour les clauses de Horn qui exploite le parallélisme ou et qui utilise comme mécanisme d'inférence la resolution. Le modèle décrit pour les clauses de Horn part d'un réseau de processus qui représente la structure syntaxique du programme logique. Le fait d'avoir fp2 comme langage pour la spécification des machines nous a permis d'utiliser le mécanisme de communication du langage pour réaliser l'opération de base dans l'inférence: l'unification. L'espace de recherche de la preuve d'une formule des clauses de Horn contient uniquement les axiomes de la preuve plus la résolvante courante. Pour prouver une formule du premier ordre, cet espace est insuffisant. Nous avons présente également une methode correcte, fondée sur la methode de connexion pour calculer les ensembles des pairs de litteraux a résoudre dans une formule de premier ordre. Cela représente le pas le plus difficile a franchir pour la spécification d'une machine a inférence parallèle pour la logique du premier ordre

<p>Rural development in Southeast Sweden</p><p>- three different views and their consequences for the agrarian landscape</p><p>This paper deals with the future for the rural areas of the southeast province of Östergötland, Sweden. The aim is to unveil, analyse and compare different views on rural development and their consequences for the agrarian landscape. Three views are considered, namely that of the different levels of Governments and their departments, that of the farmers and landowners and, finaly, that of the inhabitants of the rural areas.</p><p>Differences in the views upon rural development is reflected in differences in the ways of thinking of landscapes. Is the open, and actively cultivated, landscape the ideal for all? Who is to decide what needs or ought to be done to achieve certain desired values and/or goals – and who pays for it? The one thing that is, and should be, clear from the beginning is that all development, whether positive or negative in an area, bears consequences for the landscape. What shapes the development of the rural areas is to have – or should have – remains to be seen, but regardless form or shape it will effect the agrarian landscape.</p>

Experience with Acore: Implementing GHC with Actors

This paper presents a concurrent interpreter for a general-purpose concurrent logic programming language, Guarded Horn Clauses (GHC). Unlike typical implementations of GHC in logic programming languages, the interpreter is implemented in the Actor language Acore. The primary motivation for this work was to probe the strengths and weaknesses of Acore as a platform for developing sophisticated programs. The GHC interpreter provided a rich testbed for exploring Actor programming methodology. The interpreter is a pedagogical investigation of the mapping of GHC constructs onto the Actor model. Since we opted for simplicity over optimization, the interpreter is somewhat inefficient.
